I took my beloved 5 year old Weimaraner in for his teeth to be cleaned on August 28, 2017 at 7:30 am. The Vet called me at 10:30 am ,he had seizures. I hurried up to the office. She ( the Vet) said he should be waking up! At 1:15 pm my Dog was at an emergency Veterinary Hospital.... Brain damage they said...Euthanized at 4:30pm !!The vet did not have the oxygen on during the procedure, she said he had the seizures, when she turned him on the other side (she continued to clean his teeth after the seizures!!) All his teeth were cleaned and his nails clipped, but, his life was taken by human error !! I miss him so much!!
Mer Bear Oh my!!!! How terrible, what a horrible vet!!! So sorry for your loss.
Oh- sorry to hear of that - If this is accurate then you should be reporting this veterinarian to their veterinary college
Omg i am so sorry to hear that i dont know how i wouldve reacted if it was my poopie
Mer Bear
Oh nooooo I'm so sorry that happened. This is the reason I am NOT asking to have to put my dog under anesthesia for teeth cleaning.
I’m sorry to hear that, our prayers go to you! Stay strong
I am a mobile groomer in Florida. I have offered what I call oral preventative care. This is exactly what I do. It is non-invasive tartar scaling. It is an option for pets with minimal tartar. I have been a veterinary technician in a handful of offices locally. We as humans, who brush our teeth, are expected to get "teeth cleanings" every 6 months. The recommendations are quarterly scalings every 3 months, if prone to periodontal disease. I appreciate your video. I am concerned that pets are often expected to go under anesthesia to have a professional cleaning done. While the procedure is optimal to examine the mouth and clean sub-gingiival calculus, I feel pre-emptive scaling is of great benefit. The pet must be handled kindly and with minimal restraint. Polishing is also an prophylactic factor. I have formulated a polish consisting of only coconut oil and food-grade diatomaceous earth. I prophylactically polish the enamel with a battery operated device. I am looking forward to subsequent comments as this topic may be considered controversial.
Hi Sarah and Thanks- the fact you can also polish is impt. My 2 cents- as vets it is drilled into us either anesthesia and a 'correct' dental scale and polish or nothing.. I tend to agree with you
Sara Billings Where in Florida are you? Any social media to connect?
I love this approach. We lost our Great Dane, Annie due to the Anesthesia. Dropped her off for a cleaning and got a phone call about an hour later saying she passed away. We were heartbroken. Her heart went out of rhythm and they couldn’t correct it. Her teeth only had a light scale. Heartbroken 💔
Fantastic! Thank you for sharing the video.
another great vlog I learned another good tip Thank You for taking time out to do the vlogs for us
Thanks
Tula did great! My dad's beagle would never let me do that. She is going to have to go to the vet to have that done for sure! lol That scraping sound was giving me goosebumps, almost like how you would feel scraping your nails on a blackboard!! Whew!! Great video though for a how to at home! Thanks! :-)
You make it look so easy. My Annabelle is finally letting me brush her teeth so that's a plus.
Nice
Have a nice weekend Dr. Jones and Tula.
Thanks :-)
I'm so scared of the anesthesia on my old dog. Hopefully I can do this
Tulla is a sweetheart and great model/assistant for your videos. Lewis is watching over her making sure she does it right!
Thanks Denise
Is there any natural product or recipe that can be used for a few weeks to soften the tartar prior to a procedure like this? I’m looking for a safe product or recipe for a kitty 🐱. Awesome channel, just subscribed. ❤️
Hi Doctor in the past on my other dogs I’ve used all the techniques you’ve been so kind to show and kept dental cleaning down to 3 years. On my new dog it’s been every year plus I’ve brushed his teeth everyday. I’ve changed his food as a pup he didn’t react well to same foods as other same breed. He’s a coton de tulear. Should I feed him raw food cooked food and just avoid these expensive hard food? Please advise?! Thanks 🙏
I have a 9 year old female Havanese. I had her first dental cleaning when she was 4 and everything went well. 4 years ago a different vet at the same practice told me that she needed a cleaning badly and would probably need to have 3 teeth extracted! I was shocked to hear that as I did not think her teeth to be in bad shape. I declined to do it, and then practice was sold to a corporation within that year, and I stopped going there. Fast forward 4 years and I brought her to a new vet for her annual. He told me that she needed her teeth cleaned. I told him that I was very conservative regarding having teeth pulled unless absolutely necessary. He ended up doing a deep cleaning and didn't need to extract any teeth. When I picked her up he told me her gums were good and all she needed was a deep cleaning! Had I listened to the previous vet, my dog would not have 3 fewer teeth - for no good reason!! I do brush her teeth pretty regularly, and recommend everyone to do that. Thanks for your great videos!
Fantastic video I do this to my own teeth in between visits to the Dentist... ☺ 💕
Nice
What a brave doggy. I really need to do the same for my dog. His breath is bad and the tarter won't come off with the brush
great video Dr Jones! if i try that on my little Tanner (mixed terrior), he prob rip my arm off!!!! lol....thank you tula for being a good sport!!!! 🐶🐶🐶
Thanks Lorraine
Thank you :)
I started with microfiber wrapped around my finger, wetting it with a little bit of water, and just making soothing sounds gently rubbing the outside of my dogs teeth. About 2 weeks later I introduced a brush, and when he was ok with that, I added enzymatic toothpaste. It took about a month to get there. Its actually faster than getting your dog to accept havin his ears cleaned in my experience. Every year he goes in to have his teeth deep cleaned by my vet, just to make sure everything is good and Im not missing something.
That is a good idea.
Ironically my dog tolerates ear cleaning better than teeth cleaning lol
Thank you for sharing your love for animals!!! 🐶
Thanks
Thanks for the video. I will try to help my 14yo doxie like this. I am afraid she wont make it at the vet. She is healthy but anesthesia etc. I'm not sure she can handle it. Reading at some comments get me more afraid. Plus estimates are coming up from $500-700 which right now I don't have.
Fantastic! Thank you Dr. Andrew. Blessing's💝
Thanks Janice
There is no worse sound then the sound of dentist tools on teeth
Yeah I was twitching with each scrape she held my phone away from me lol
Brilliant video. Very useful 🙂👏
Thanks!
my dog has that, Its kind of hard brushing his teeth because his tongue sticks out of his mouth, he has a condition, he has a hard time eating and hes getting old now. So im going to try and help him and make him have a awesome life before he goes.
My dog won't let me even touch its mouth 😂😂
You have to work your way up to brushing your dogs teeth. Take it slow at first then you can work your way up to fully brushing his/her teeth. At first my dog would whine and wouldn't let me touch his mouth. I had to have another person to help brush his teeth, but eventually he let me cause he knew there wasn't a way out of it. Luckily, he didn't have that much tarter on his teeth. He was a rescue so I couldn't control that until i had him. I would reccomend to brush daily until the tarter is under control. Now my dogs teeth they are sparkly clean and whiter then most peoples teeth. I brush every other day since i dont need to brush everyday anymore. Even after 3 days his teeth are clean and white. His breath smells like absolutely nothing even after eating so he can pant in my face all he wants. Brushing is very beneficial to your dogs mouth health and just overall health. For a cheeper but effective tooth paste, I would recommend nylabone tater control. I've used other toothpastes but always came back to this one. It works so well and is veterinary approved!
So sorry for your loss! I took my dog to the vet to have her teeth clean professionally and when I returned the doctor kimmel had pulled one of her canine tooth’ the long top tooth, I cannot call the proper name of the tooth, I am having a senior moment right now, and when he handed it to me he stated that something was wrong with it, again I cannot recall what it was, but the tooth looked perfectly fine to me. I think he pulled her tooth to pad the bill! I was very unhappy and upset and now that I think about it, I should not have paid for that unauthorized extraction! It was many, many years before that vet clinic saw us again and when I returned Dr Kimmel was no longer there. My dog was always drooling because of him pulling her tooth. I brushed my dog teeth twice a week and she had annually cleanings until I could not avoid it and I had her teeth cleaned every other year. Also, I used a water 💦 pik , which gave her beautifully fresh and white teeth.
Thanks
I took my 4 lb toy poodle in for neuter and teeth cleaning and they pulled 17! I was mad as h*ll that they didn't get my ok first. He always had issues after that! They charged me $540!
When you’re showing the instrument if you put your hand behind it it will focus on the instrument. They do it all the time and make up videos when they’re holding up a brush LOL
I have a fresh breath spray not same ingredients at all as my enzymatic neem oil based toothpaste I’m wondering if it’s safe to use the breath dental spray after each toothpaste and brush cleaning? Is it too much?
She's so beautiful and trusts you.nice
Yes and Thanks
Thanks Doc ;D

@@VeterinarySecrets oh I'm so sorry , only just saw your reply , missed it . Thank you
I was thinking of trying an ultrasonic device. My dog has at least one tooth that needs just a little effort to extract. It’s small and barely staying attached. Do I need to be concerned about not running a course of antibiotics? This seems to be protocol.
thanks
Welcome
Thank you sir 🌈 pride
Is it true it is not good to do this if not polishing after? What should we do at home to keep smooth?
Have u cosider using a bite block (children size) so at least she doesnt close to much that might help u a little.. thank u for the tip..
Thanks
Dear Dr Jones
I give a few drops of apple vinegar in water for the dog to drink every days.is it ok ? Please tell me .thanks
My chihuahua did Not like the first attempt at scaling today but has gotten to to letting my brush tartar is severe I don’t want him to be “put under” again
Unrefinded coconut oil is awesome
I use a 3" sterile.stainless steel screw that I can have better control so I do not hit the gum. The screw point helps break off the tarter like the dentist tool but more controlled and less likely to slip and stab a gum. I go up a centimeter or two and light press and it breaks off another chunk. Much less traumatic for both of us. Even works on big tarter.
Wil van der Meulen You Whallin😂
Thanks for the information. By the way my dog caught a cold. Any piece of advice. I don t like just giving regular medicine.
Hi- elderberry and honey
Veterinary Secrets thanks 😁
Thx for the video! How much would a vet charge to clean my dogs teeth, mainly the rear teeth, I can clean the front myself. Thx
Welcome
Since my 10 month old cocker spaniel came home from being spayed, her breath is horrible. Like dead animal smell horrible. Her teeth do not have tartar buildup yet. Could it be something serious?
CMKA91 yes it could go to a vet as soon as you can. It could be serious health problems.
I've heard of a product called Plaque Off. In your opinion, does it work? Does it have anything in it tht we wouldn't want our pets to have?
Yes- we used it in veterinary practice- good results
Dr. Jones, how do you feel about dental water additives?
As in flouride? Little experience with them, generally don't help much
DO NOT add toxic chemicals to do your dogs drinking water
@@VeterinarySecrets what about Chlorhexidine? I've been reading about it as a water additive.
Thank you doctor for the professionalism with which you do your job. You listen to your client and you always put their needs first, to ensure they live another day healthily and vibrant. Cheers to you my doctor, I celebrate the way you do your job. If it was up to me I would give you the award of being the best doctor. Thank you Dr Emovon on UA-cam for curing my bad breath naturally..😷😷🤗
I'm starting to take responsibility for my dog and I need advice
This channel is very good and he used to be a vet so he knows both sides and REALLY genuinly cares . Check out all his other videos . This is my regular go to place for my dog friends good health . This man is amasing in his knowledge
We’ll you can use raw egg yolk to improve dogs skin and it’s safe for them but of course check with the vet about an allergy test. Cause if there they get an allergic reaction they can develop itchy skin,to rash,to Hives,to hotspot ect.and if they scratch there skin too much it can lead to a risk of skin infections dogs overall health mainly depends on proper diet and exercise, and if your going to give wet food make sure to put some hard food with it or a bone, cause wet food Rott teeth faster and bones help with flossing the teeth.
This is really good information, as always, but boy I can see this going badly for the dog with your average person trying this at home😬
It needs to be started slowly, one tooth at a time
Veterinary Secrets
Absolutely! I appreciate all of your videos so much!!!!
Sunny Dae exactly id hurt my dog
Hi can you help me my dog has bad breath and I feel it starts in the gut I do feed him Stella & Chewy's meal he eats organic holistic food primarily Raw and he does need to have a couple of teeth extracted but he won't let me brush his teeth and I just feel like he's got need some help do you offer a product for that can you recommend anything do you feel it in the gut any guidance would be most helpful he's 10 lb 10 years old and he's a rat terrier thank you in advance!!!!!✨✨✨✨🙏✨ do you think your canine Health formula could be the missing link to clean up his gut and get his oral health under control if so I'm happy to buy it but please let me know thank you
what can we give our dogs to make them calm, so we can clean their teeth at home. I have one rescue, that there is no way she is going to let me anywhere near her mouth. I would be afraid I would poke her with the tool. She is all wiggles when you try to trim her nails or brush her, or trim her hair. It's just very hard to do. But I do not take them to a groomer, so I just keep trying at home. By the way , I have had her for 4 years. Thanks for any suggestions
Hi, the best one I find is valerian
I have some capsules, but do not know how much to give each dog. I suppose it is weight related. one is about 12lb. and the other 22lb.
My dog Ava goes nuts if I try to even open her mouth she does the crazy dog and flys around the house running lol
How do you scrape off tartar on the bottom molars?
Same way. Start at gum line and scrape up on bottom, down on top
My dog is 14 yrs old, and has aural cancer. He had surgery back in June, and his teeth were cleaned as well. I noticed an odor the other day. I feed him soft food. He misses bones, but with the swelling on left jaw, I haven’t given him any bones. His teeth look clean. Any suggestions? Thank you! xo
Yes- get dandelion root tincture, 95% curcumin, and CBD/THC
My puppy never stays still except if I cuddle it
Can you recommend a toothpaste?
I have started using a tiny bit of raw organic coconut oil on a small child's tooth brush for mine every night. Just doing a little section each night and making it gentle and playful to build their trust and always kiss and praise her after : ) i wash the tooth brush after with a little Eco natural washing up liquid and rinse it off properly
How often do they need a professional cleaning ? We have 6 dogs and a cleaning is $300. Do we need to pay $1800/year ? Thx !
It varies- some every year, others every 5-7 years
You can get the dental tools on Amazon too. Keep brown listerine on a pad to apply too. Good video doc. Sweet Tula.
Thanks Sue and good suggestion
My poodles won't even hold still to spray their teeth. I got some Tru Dog spray and don't use it. I don't think I could manage to use dental tools on them. Wish I could. My groomer claims she cleans their teeth but they have the bad breath so we got the spray.
OK
My husband is going to give the spray a try. Maybe he can do it. :)
I spray it on my fingers and rub on their teeth and gums
@@karenhoward303 Good idea. I need to do that.
People need to be really careful not to poke their gums or scratch their enamel to I don’t think this is such a good idea for most people to do at home unless they are very careful and know what they’re doing and what to beware of. Baby carrots and Raul sweet potato are good for cleaning my dogs teeth I also brush her teeth and take her in for a cleanings though
What about possible infection?
🙋 Hi there, just wondering what you do for the inside side of the tooth? 😘
Most of the time its fine
At this time I cannot afford a vet. Soooo what about using what I used to clean my own teeth? I used turmeric, sea salt and baking soda and my teeth became very clean and white.
Thats what i am scared of :( to give my chihuahua sadation.
Fragaria is a wonderful homeopathic remedy for softening tartar and preventing build up
Hi,

Thanks!
I’m a little sad that you don’t talk about how to prevent tarter from forming in the first place...
My 5 yo Frenchie has perfect teeth and breath and we have NEVER had to have her teeth cleaned....
And I do one thing and one thing only to keep her teeth...
I give her raw bones!! And I let her keep them until they are unsafe...
She gets a bone ever 1-2 weeks, typically a part of a hipbone or something, with a little meat on it and some exposed marrow... the meat counts in as her food, and the marrow gets her to really work on the bone and that way she naturally de scales her own teeth...
every time we go to our yearly vet check she is praised for her teeth by their dental specialist ;)
I have an 8 month old puppy and I will do the same for her...
Yes the raw bones can be very effective for minimizing tartar
Sabina Hertzum
Where can I get raw bone for my dog. I'm a new dog owner. When you say raw bone do you mean the raw bone hide that shaped like a bone. Or an actual bone? Where can I buy. Thanks
BlessedByHim Just your regular chew bone will do fine. They sell them at petstores. Dont give your dog cooked bones. You can give your dog raw bones but only recommended if you're going to be feeding them strictly on a raw food diet, if you're sticking to dog food then give them the chew bones.
Hermiie
Thank you so much for response. I will give him the chew bone instead. Appreciate the pointers😊🙏🏻
What is the difference between raw bones and chew bones ? Are they safe for dogs?
How can I keep my dog still so I can do this
I refuse to pay prices to have dogs teeth cleaned at vet. Also my poor friend took her dog in for a teeth cleaning and the dog died. Had some kind of reaction. It was horrible. I cant imagine
I feel bad because my dog hates her mouth being touched. She’s 13 now and her teeth are going bad. I’m going to try my best to brush her teeth 😤😤😤 I feel really bad though for not taking care of it like I should of been
Hope this works
My dog will not let me get to the back of his mouth, it is truly frustrating. Can any enzymatic product dissolve tarter???? They claim to.
Hi, The one we used the most in vet practice was Plaque Off
my dog is a pinscher and she would take off my fingers if i tried this
no way my dogs would allow me to scale their teeth! Tulla is a sweetie!
Thanks
What do you do if your dog is a toy breed and has a severe underbite and they won't behave no matter what you do to their mouth even with calming medicine?
Andre I didn't breed her she came from the local animal shelter.
Then you'll need a veterinary scale/polish
The vet won't do it it now b/c she's an older dog and she had a hard time coming out of the anthesia the last time they cleaned and extracted some of her teeth.
Take a helper, wrap her into a towel, firm but not too tight. And keep trying. She will eventually give in if you persist and be gentle and calm so she will trust you. Get anti tartar gels and liquids that you put on the area, they supposed to make tartars softer to aid you. I’m getting ready to do this to my “tcup” Yorkie rescue, just need to get those tools still.
Yorkie I've tried stuff the vet recommended she wouldn't go along with it.
Im 14 years old
What about a waterpik?
That's actually a cool idea
P
my dog has very bad breath
I am from Ohio USA I am here to thank #drohanon for his good works I have been diagnosed with hepatitis and I have been taking all kind of treatment until I came across #drohanon on UA-cam who made me smile again thank you Dr for your greatness🤮🤮
We don't know where to begin, but you are the most caring doctors that we have ever known Dr Emovon on UA-cam. You are “heroes" in your family. Thanks so much for curing me from bad breath, the world will definitely hear about this sir.#dremovon...🙏🙏
My dog has bad teeth I can't afford the vet. I'm worried about her. Her teeth are bad and I can't clean them because they are so bad. What can I do?
Try the cleaning or see if someone in your area is performing anesthesia free dentals
Veterinary Secrets I'm scared to touch her teeth I've tried and I'm afraid I'll hurt her or cause and infection. I clean my other dog I started cleaning hers right off.
Thank you for responding.
Katy Pardee,
I got a credit with CareCredit to help my rescue with her horrible teeth situation. Had to make no payments for 6 first months. If it’s really bad, there’s probably some pulling will need to be done.
Yorkie Paradise I believe some teeth will have to be pulled. I couldn't get approved for care credit because I don't have any credit. I need a dentist who will do pym plan with me.
@@katypardee9667 I know this is 4 years later. But what did you do? Did you find a solution?
My dog will never let me near her mouth.
I use a finger and k-9 toothbrush on my puppies everyday
That's good
It's because you dont floss
I didn't get halfway through before I knew there's no way in hell my dog would tolerate... Female catahoula... Off to the vet I go..
I am watching carefully cause i want to clean my dogs teeth but he’s uncomfy even when we brush his teeth.
Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

If ur gums bleed daily floss more!
We don't have those injections for calming the dog at home. Can we use marijuana or alcohol?
CBD oil can help calm your dog.
this should not be done at home... what u could end up hurt your dog
Some dogs tolerate it well- others do not
Just no.
OK
Lol don’t forget to wear ur glasses, smh
Don’t have any scaling instruments? Try using a dime.
Hello, super, if You can do that. But it's really not easy doing this with a Chihuahua 's Mouth. Maybe with an electric Teethbrush!??? 😂👄😉 GREETINGS
Hello, why are you showing your audience how to clean our pets teeth using dental tools like we know what we are doing! They barely allowing us to brush their teeth let alone going towards them with a sharp instrument which we have no training, nor knowledge how to use it. When dogs have their teeth cleaned professionally by you the vet, they are sedated! I thought you were going to show us how to make a natural tooth paste and/or a natural mouthwash to put in their water bowl or something, not something as ludicrous as this!
Some dogs are OK with it, and in that case I feel pet parents can do the same.
Can you get the camera any further from the dog? Close up would be so much better.
Gay Redford.
