  • Welcome back to Sew Steady live with Kate Quinn. Welcome to her new studio as she shares the fun power & potential of the classic clamshell design. She starts with the basics and moves on to some fun embellishments that include feathers, Spin E Fex 14, and the Curly Q. These designs are a leap off for many other options and should be viewed as only the tip of the iceberg. This week is part 1 - classic clamshells. She will continue her clamshell series next week with some other clamshell options available in the Westalee line.
    Check out today’s templates using the this link. (Tip: The Mini Multi Arc can also be used for many of these designs but does not feature a 1.5” clamshell and would need to be moved and repositioned for each clamshell. )

    Kate, first- you do not talk too much. Every thought you verbalize teaches me, because you are thinking some of what I do and it is so helpful to see how you problem solve “on the fly”. Second- I have killed yards of fabric and batting practicing feathers to no avail. I just keep practicing bad feathers. I found your point about using the templates to get the practice soooooo validating! Thanks for all your videos!

    This was my first time watching you. Thank you for sharing your sew room at the beginning. I found your demonstration to be the best I've seen. I wish everyone did videos as professionally as you do. Great camera work. You took the time to make sure we could see your work properly and even though you were working on a sample I like how you emphasized the tack downs and showed how to bury the thread with the needle. Most do not. I subscribed to your channel and unsubscribe to a couple other Wesley channels. 👍👍

    I have just been looking at the instruction manual for my sewing machine and I can't find out what size my shank is for the foot, eg high, med, low, I think it's a low for my machine, is a Memory Craft 6000...Can you give some idea of how this is measured, I would be most grateful, for this. As I would like to get one of the Ruler Feet for quilting. I do have a pressure foot for quilting, but would like to get into the rulers, as I've been watching your video's of quilting, and I must say they are fantastic to watch, thank you for doing all you do for them too as I know it takes a lot of time to produce them for us, just know you are very much appreciated for sure!

    I recently bought the short set of 6 templates and just today watched your video. How would you figure out how to have a balanced row of clam shells based upon the length of any edge of a quilt (if that makes sense)?

    • @katequinnoffabquilts
      @katequinnoffabquilts  2 роки тому

      The sampler set of clamshells is 3” base on 1 side and 1” on the other. Start the first row in the center and work to the outside edge. Then return to the center and stitch to the far side. Once the first row is done you can go in a single direction from end to end and the return the next row in the opposite direction.

    • @katequinnoffabquilts
      @katequinnoffabquilts  3 роки тому +1

      Echo guide have limited potential with clamshells since the cannot descent down in the middle. Depending on what you want the final appearance to be they can work. You would want to play with them in maybe on paper with the stitching line disks to see if they do what you want.

    Just finished a clamshell ruler on a 60x60 inch quilt. Oh how I wish I had seen your video first. My error was not holding the individual shell. I also had issues going over seam joints. Any tips?

    • @katequinnoffabquilts
      @katequinnoffabquilts  3 роки тому

      Thick seams can be a problem. I usually try to manage them ahead of time with pressing and nesting as much as possible. It may also require a little more push and pulling as the fabric binds up. Make sure you have a glider under the quilt. For really tough areas, you can adjust the foot to pass the seam and then adjust back but that is a pain.
