Hi Kate. I love the way you teach. My question is this: you adjust your speed by doing something to your machine. Are you not speeding up with the foot pedel? I have a Bernina and am rather new to FMQ. When I'm not using the BSR I need my foot pedel to speed up/ down

Most sewing today have a drop in bobbin on top hope they design the mat gilder for that would be easy when the bobbin run out!!!!!!!!
They could but that would have to be different for every machine. Also it weakens the glider to have another cutout. It is a little inconvenient but so smooth over the bobbin case that I think that makes up for it.
I saw that someone used baby wipes to clean the back of their mat. I've not tested it, but I thought it a brilliant idea.

Baby wipes does work really well. I always have them in the studio or take them to a show.
Very helpful - thank you. I'm trying to get set up for ruler work, but each time I put my ruler foot on, my needle never wants to pick up my bobbin thread. Any ideas?
I am guessing that the foot may be a little too high so the needle cannot cycle all the way down. Try to set the foot just kissing the fabric and not too Hight to see if that makes a difference.
GREAT tutorial! I just quilted my first runner..not good. A few questions...I use a MC Janome 8200QC, I don't understand what you are doing to raise and lower the foot, mine has a wire like thing that you turn but it doesn't go low enough. Second question, where is the tension you are changing? Is it with the big screw that you turn with the screwdriver, the dial that is usually at 5 ? I am very new to quilting and a newish sewer. Thanks!!

I love this video. Thank you - great advice and so clearly presented. I am hoping that you can help me with a problem that I am having. I am trying to use rulers to complete a quilt for my grandson. I did an in-person workshop a couple of years ago and I have watched SO MANY videos, including yours. I did not have issues using rulers after the class. Now, however, I must be doing something wrong setting up my machine. With the ruler foot attached, It works going forward, but I can't get it to work going backwards. I am using a Janome QDC3600 and a low-shank ruler foot. Stitch length set to zero. Feed dogs down. Aurifil 40 wt thread. Quilting needle 90/14, Can you tell me which settings to use and/or what I might be doing wrong? Thank you in advance. I am running out of hair to pull. Lol.

I loved this lesson but what would you do if your machine dont have a speed regulator .
We have a new product called the precise pedal power than is designed for non stitch regulated machines. Also, I regulated with my speed control but I was using the sound of machine. I don’t have a stitch regulator. I will try to add a link for this later but I have class this morning.
What is the polish you used on the grid mat. I just ordered the mat but did not see the polish advertised.

I recognize your Janome machine. At what pressure level have you set your pressure foot?
I don’t usually change the pressure. I change the foot height to match the sandwich so it may change from quilt to quilt.

You should show what your doing on the settings so we know where those setting are
I spoke through the setting because my machine is very specific and it will not help the general public if they try to do it the same. Each quilt sandwiches and batting and machine will have its own quilts or requirements. The basic direction is that the foot needs to be as low as possible to stitch well while not preventing you from moving. If this was a Janome channel I would do that and have a video regarding that if you need it, but my channel is brand non specific so I did not do that here.

What buttons are you pressing to make your changes???
My machine has the a button to raise and lower the foot for more effective control when using rulers. A simple push can lift and lower the presser foot just slightly.
Could you show us actually washing your glider mat?
why would you ever take the glider off the sewing machine?
I need to remove my gilder to change the bobbin on my machine and also to clean my machine. I also have to switch machines for my job so I frequently have to remove and re-adhere it. Also I like to clean if periodically so it sticks better. It gets linty over time.
Lowering your foot is great, but I have trouble at the seams. Sometimes my foot is too low to pass over bulky seam but then too high for the flatter parts. Do you find that you are adjusting your foot height as you quilt from block to block? How can I fix this issue? Also where can I find the grid glider? I have a supreme slider, but I think the markings would be very helpful.

I do sometimes have to adjust the rulerfoot to get over bumpy seams. I do also adjust it back after if it is really high. I also try to manage seam very diligently as I am piecing a top to minimize any bulk. Or choice a design that does not end at or near a bulky seam knot. That can be challenging,

If the wait is too long, then I will go ahead with the mat alone. Are you able to give me any information about this?
Also thank you for your tip about bulky seams, I have been making an effort lately to keep them flat, but I also like your idea of planning designs away from these areas. I have just discovered you on you tube and am finding your information very helpful, I just need to make the time to watch. The videos are a bit long, but the information is always good. You have so much to share, skimping because of time would be a shame.

It's not about ruler work???
This is about ruler foot installation, thread tension issues, speed control and other important tips to be successful but not only for Rulerwork. These tips all apply to ruler quilt but many also apply to Freemotion quilting as well.
