Hey all! Which guitar would you pick?
Thanks for watching! Sub and comment to enter the Browne Protein 7,500 Sub giveaway! 🤟🏼
depends,
texas blues style-a strat
english 60s/70s blues-Les Paul or humbuckers
LoFi early blues-P90s
no pedals, just an attenuator with overdriven amp
sold the Vibroverb and Super now running 1 super bass & 1 super bass modded w/ a SL stack......68 plexis
The 355 cause i already have some strats and a great Les Paul.
What is your amp ?
I would pick the Tele (if it was a lefty 🤔)
@JamesOnGuitar Loved the video and the pick of guitar, my favorite combo is either my Collings vintage style City Limits or my John Cruz MB Strat with the Beetronics Overhive pedal 😈
Tele all day
The SG is the best one! Followed by Broadcaster and LP JR for me
Ah the snarl of your gold SG when you switched to the bridge pickup, just awesome
Wow thar Gibson SG sounds (and looks) incredible !!!
your 1960 LP reissue has the best tone for blues rock IMHO. Nice playing throughout though, the audio and video is high quality.
The best guitar.......is the guitar in your hands 🎸
I liked the 355 best. They all sounded great, but that 355 had a richness, depth, and woodiness that just wasn’t present in the other guitars. Not sure if that’s what it felt like in person, but that’s what I heard. That being said, it also depends on the band…the 355 could easily occupy too much bandwidth and overlap with other instruments if it’s not dialed in correctly, and create a muddy soup. So for a small band, 355. Otherwise, I really liked the tele! I liked the LP and SG too, but the sound was a bit more modern than I would have gone for in this particular application. I might have chosen the LP or SG if I was playing slide or for more of a “country rock” sound.
Oh yeah, objectively the 355 has gorgeous tone i think. It was just a bit full on and it more of a handful to play! The Tele would be great in a band - totally rip through!
The 335 is the guitar i play less but the last one id ever sell, everytime i put it in my hands i write a song, i cant explain it, out of 15 songs i wrote for my album atleast, 12 were with the 335....and when i take a second to look at it cant help but think? what a goodlooking classic guitar, its really a peice of art...they all are i guess....
Glad you're back on UA-cam. All the best to your wife and to you too. Hang in there.
Fantastic video! Thanks for taking the time to make and share despite the trials of life. You and your family remain in my thoughts/prayers
Incredible video!! You are easily my favorite YT channel at the moment. Our interests and appreciations in the guitar/amp genre are almost exactly the same.
Great comparisons. Very informative, and entertaining. Thank you!
Great video! That SG is just so cool. You’ve done a great job curating a collection of gear to realize a tone in your head. I think the sounds you have achieved are fantastic. Thanks for sharing!
Nice collection! All have their own personalities. blending them together in recordings or on stage is magic!
Great collection of guitars! I love the sound of the Strat.
love the video bro! Great topic and must have been fun and a bit tough to narrow down to your #1.
Really enjoyed the run through. Very nice playing. Can’t argue with the order. As mentioned a PRS or even a Flying V could make the list also. Hope everything’s going well at home and so good to hear some tasty blues licks back again. Take care.
Deciding what guitar to get for this genre; so this vid was a great help.
Great to see your videos pop on my YT Again
Blues / Rock is the best music to play for sure!!
Hope the situation is getting better for the both of you!
Always loved listening to blues working on learning it now
Very Cool video, Thankyou. Interesting seeing the Comparison of Guitars. That Pedal Rocks. Cheers
Sick collection man. Spezial really spezial.
I loved this video, thanks James 👍. Tough to pick a favourite out of that, but equal top was the 335, SG, and Les Paul
Mew subscriber, I really enjoyed the video content... keep up the good work!
Wonderful work! I agree with you on your number 1 for Blues Rock. I have found that I am more comfortable playing a Les Paul compared to the others on this list but that's my preference.
love your guitars collection!
Great playing and beautiful guitars!
I gotta say, the Roseland and the R0 come alive together.
I'm just a weekend warrior and all I really play is blues and classic rock and I totally agree with you about the les paul. My favorite guitar out of my collection is a strat that I found with the same birthday as my daughter but my favorite guitar I play the most is my R9 followed by my PRS CE 24 semi hollow. You should try one of those if you get the chance I think you would like how snappy and resonant they are. Best wishes from my family to yours brother, We went through a similar situation a few year's ago and keeping her as busy as possible is what helped us tremendously. Sending all the good vibes from Arkansas, USA
Don’t mean to be intrusive, but what happened ?…
Great video! Was surprised how much I liked the Broadcaster… might have to check one out
Great guitars. Great video.
Great vid and great guitars! I'm an SG man myself and loved your gold one, but i have to agree that Les Paul is heavenly sounding with this style of music!!
My two favorite blues rock guitars are the les Paul and broadcaster. I have the same ones you do.
Great video James! I played acoustic cowboy chords for many years, but just before the pandemic invested in a nice 95 American Strat. I'm still a pentatonic hack, but I eventually felt too hemmed in by the Strat as I'll never be able to play like SRV and Jimi. I went out and found a lightweight Standard 60's Gibson LP and it's been quite a revelation, for me it's more of an open book and definitely more the sound I'm going for at the moment. Even though there's been a truckload of great LP players down the years I feel less trapped in a bubble than with my Strat. Keep up the good work and Rock on!
Blues is in the soul and the fingers first what you play it on is up to you place most any guitar in a great players hands and their gonna make magic ....on any guitar man I have heard magic on an Epiphone dot which was astounding to listen to....
Amazing James as always. So glad the les Paul was first!💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Great run-through on your various guitars. Your rationales were easy to follow. I tend to strats and teles over LPs, or more accurately, single coils over HBs, although I'm currently suffering through a P90 phase.
Brilliant Video!!
You always put out great material, that's why I follow you and have been subscribed for shine time now. This comment is to make sure I'm entered in the running for the Brown Protein pedal. Thanks.
That Junior is just splendid.
Hey, I'm loving the channel! Great job! Curious about the first builds.
Also, I could use a Protein pedal...
I would have picked the SG as #1, the Paul Weller Strat as #2 and the LP in 3rd position. I have the same SG as you and it's an absolute keeper. Very versatile and the best neck I've ever played ! Cheers
Fantastic video! I really don't think you can go wrong with any of these choices, but I'd probably go for that R0 or the Junior if I had to choose.
Great video! Can’t go past the look and sound of the black 355, but overall that SG is just amazing!
Really enjoy your content. I can really relate to many of your videos. As to my take on this video…. My top 3, in no particular order…
ES-355
SG
‘89 strat
Fascinating video, James. Firstly, it demonstrates how encompassing the blues-rock genre is. All of the guitars you demonstrated sounded excellent played in this style. The Les Paul was definitely up there as was the hardtail Strat. Your SG is very special, but not quite as impactful when compared with the Les Paul to my ears. Maybe it's the human ear being influenced by the greater bass of its older sibling. For me, third place should go to the ES though (on sound alone). I confess to being biased though as I love ES guitars for blues-rock. It just shows how much of this is personal preference and that's great. A Tele can do anything from rock to blues and country to jazz. For such a simple design, it's amazingly versatile. Probably my favourite guitar, but perhaps a bit of a jack-of-all-trades in this company. As an owner of the Nordland ODR-C, I absolutely concur about its versatility with a broad range of different guitars. Excellent pedal.
Just found your channel and subscribed!!!
my personal favourite is the 59 les paul especially Greeny. personally am a massive fan of gary moore and what he did with that guitar is just magical to listen to.
Jamsieboyyyyyy! i noticed immediatly, how much more comfortable you look playing guitar, not that you ever looked unconfortable,, i just realized just now, it was obvious from 5 seconds into the video! its a beautiful thing! much more fluent!
Thanks man! That’s really nice of you 😃 i do feel a bit more comfortable and fluent 🤟🏼
@@JamesOnGuitar YW, IT WAS EVIDENT IMMEDIATLY......
Great vid James you've got some fantastic guitars and you certainly know how to play them, the only change I would make to your list is to swap the 335 with the jnr 😂👍🎸
For me it would be the 1959 Gibson ES 355, shocked it’s in last place for you. Love baseball bat necks, that full body round tone and snarl. Beautiful collection man!
I've just joined a blues rock band. I'm playing with a SSS Strat, but I'm thinking on buying a Les Paul or a SG. But didn't thought of a HSS Strat hard tail. Maybe a good one too. Nice videos. Wonderful work on your channel. Cheers!!!
Hi James, that was an extremely enjoyable episode. To my ears for this blues rock track first is the SG, simply astonishing guitar and sound, then the Les Paul and third the Tele. However, there's always some opinion "bias" in everyone's choice as each of us has his/her own visual preferences when it comes to guitars. Take care
You have a selection of wonderful guitars. They are all lovely, but I have a weakness for the SG. I own a ‘64 CS RI and I like everything about it: great feeling speedy neck, awesome sounding CustomBuckers, lightweight and beautiful VOS finish. I’d love to try the Protein with it 😉 Cheers mate, you have a great YT channel ! Good luck 🍀 to the potential giveaway winner 🤞🏻!
this is a useful video, i think i know what guitar to get now
They all sounded great and did their individual thang wonderfully. Agree with the top two for sure, but would have pushed the Tele to 3. Great playing and great tone.
that's good to hear with the addition of good protein
Hey James, that was great… I think I’m going to see when the next batch of nordlands is coming up… great tone, I’m torn… Tele, R0, Paul Waller Strat…you are right I think there needs to be more hard take strats in the world😆
Being a Junior guy, I liked it more than 6th, that being said, you got 1-3 totally right in my opinion. That Les Paul sounds so great in these clips.
The Gibsons sounded much better than the Fenders for this particular sound to my ears.
Hey James ..
Good to see you putting up some videos ..
Hope your wife is doing well ..
Have you tried the celestion G12H65 Heritage speaker .. for Blues .. also need it to handle pedals for floyd tones .. 😎
I'm looking at Atom amps supertone special .. only need something for home use ..
😎 🎸 🇮🇪
I dunno, they all sounded great, but I keep coming back to the Fender Masterbuilt Paul Waller 1950's Strat Hardtail HSS - there's something very special about that one.
Good to see you James .. I’m leaning towards the Strat . I’ve owned and sold about 4 in my lifetime, but the bug is back to grab another 🤦🏻♂️..
Hi James, Great video!!
I would like to ask if you're going to try another humbuckers for the 60 RI Les Paul?
HSS strat, done. 😉
Yeah my fav guitar up top :)
Shit , I love them all .
when I think of that sound straight away I think strat, so for me, it will always be number one. but each to their own that's what makes the world go around. nice selection either way James and some killer guitars.
@UCarX_lCZm_N1HvI5p2U4kYg in it to win
sorry, James but how do I do the text by the method you have given me? think I might have done it but not sure?
The Strat first cause I am a huge Hendrix and SRV Fan but I also liked the Gipson SG.
The hardtail strat sounded surprisingly good, maybe with rail pickups that make it darker, it would be even a better fit
Played fenders for the last 30 years but recently got my hands on a les paul so i would choose your 59
I wonder how much you spend on strings😂
Looking forward to seeing your workshop/ strat build
Hi really like this vid hearing your collection through a bartel roseland they all sound great, question try a rocknroll relics guitars absolutely up there with your vast collection you will want one thanks brian
You sound plenty good IMO, lots of people have lots of things, nice collection, enjoy
355 please
Nice video. IMO for chimey blues nothing beats a strat. Since that's my personal favorite style...that's what I would choose BUT for what I think of Blues Rock...for me it's a 335 hah. I started on a strat so that's cheating but a 335 felt like home to me when I held one for the first time. Les Paul was almost the complete opposite reaction for me. That being said you could make any of them work just fine.
When I think blues rock lately, I’m thinking of something along the lines of Joey Landreth. All of these tones sound much more raw and crispy to my ears. Great tones though-my favorite was the master built Strat.
Cheers man 🙌 but… huh? We are definitely on different pages, but that’s ok 😃
My fav sounding guitar of yours is - I know I said that earlier - still the PW masterbuilt Strat, that raw tone and energy coming from that guitar is absolutely crazy. I guess Joe Bonamassa knows what he is talking about and he's always saying hardtail strats are the best.
For me, it was the SG first, which Really surprised me (that particular one you have must have some Real magic), then the 335, then the Junior, then the Les Paul. I love Teles and Strats actually more than any of the other guitars here, but in the particular context of this video, they weren’t faves.
Subscribed! The thought of another pedal was too much to resist!
I can’t seem to respond to your message with a text. Hope this doesn’t disqualify me.
forgotttt youuu had the 56 JR.NICEEEEEEEEEEE.....ITS A PEACH! she he has that thing we love about 50s gibsons!
THE YELLOW SG HAS PROBABLY THE BEST RECREATION OF GIBSON PAFS I EVER HEARD! 100%
Saw Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown last night. HSS Strats and Les Pauls all night. Amazing show and for me the Strat takes the top spot.
Oh man that sounds like an epic night that i’d have loved to have seen!
@@JamesOnGuitar it was great. It was an outdoor show in Paris Texas, Tyler’s hometown. Super chill free sponsored summer event. We were about 35-40 feet back. Lots of fun.
Mate, Love your content you’re producing. Top notch! For me depends what I had for breakfast If I had lucky charms, the les Paul would be #1. If I had weetbix then it would be the 355.
Could use a protein 🤣 Great video as always.
Subbed !😃👍🏻
Thoughts on more modern alt blues rock bands eg. Reignwolf? Blue stones?
I love every guitar you use honestly. I own 2 Les Pauls, 3 SG’s, 2 Strats and 2 Tele’s…. No 335’s though…. The body just feels overly large for me not to say it’s not a fantastic guitar as well ( they are typically considerably more pricey typically as well ). My personal favorite though is the SG, it just checks every box for me and yours is exceptionally gorgeous 🤙
Gibson Les Paul reissue is the best sounding in my opinion
The Tele by miles. That thing rocked.
Interesting choices with the 2 strats. I associate this type of playing more with finger style and 3 pickup guitars (imo) are not that conducive to finger style - that bloody middle pup getting in the way! Where did you get the "Brown Sugar played on a hardtail Strat" from? I always thought it was Pearly...
I had always assumed Pearly until i read some article a coupla years back which seemed pretty convincing about the hardtail, but i was surprised at the time. However, if I’m wrong that’s no surprise because the internet is full of crap a lot of the time and then people (me in this case) just passing the falsehood on. Could be worth a video where I try it on both 🤔
WAIT you can entirely ignore me. It was the La Grange intro I was thinking of 🤦🏻♂️ oh dear… i’ll get my coat
@@JamesOnGuitar 😂😂 A Brown Sugar tone vid would still be good though 👍👍
SRV Strat.
I'm wondering what's gonna be the 100k giveaway? Maybe a Les Paul.. Just kidding. Cheers!
Hello from Wisconsin!
The land of Beer, Cheese, Brats an
Harley Davidson
It's definitely a crap shoot, and everybody has different favorites. A P90 semihollow is one of my preferred blues guitars, regardless of bodyshape.
As an albert king, i prefer the sound of a flying v
Love a bit of Albert King, i guess i just didn’t articulate well what I meant between blues rock and electric blues - i feel bb, albert king, srv etc fall into blues rather than blues rock if that makes sense 🤔 maybe a subtle difference i suppose
@@JamesOnGuitar yeah i see what you mean, i think the v works with that blues rock too, even tho my example was probably a bit off the genre with albert king
What about p90 les paul man :-?? Especially compared to humbuckers
Doesn’t the les paul junior sort of cover that?! 🤔
@@JamesOnGuitar well for sure, but havin only 1 pickup, it gives way less tonal options :-? But yeah bridge/rhythm wise u right ;-??
The best guitar for blues rock is the one you have in your hands. The geanre does not require any special things like a floyd or specific pickups, just pick up any axe and get to chopping 😁
Hey, i just don’t agree with that (and i’ve heard loads of people say it). It is like one of those over simplifications like: tone is in the fingers. It just isn’t 100% true. It is true that a guitar is better than no guitar. But one guitar can be better than another for a genre. Some guitars are lifeless and don’t inspire you 🤷🏽 i know why people say it, but i think it is just an easy way out rather than really thinking about the specifics. The absolute top level guitarists can get the best sound from anything… the rest of us can be helped by the best guitar we can afford and find for the genre 🙌
@@JamesOnGuitar I mean, I do agree to a point. A good guitar is a good guitar and it inspires you no matter the geanre you play but with blues rock its just all preference, a guitar that you hate for it, might be my favorite of the lot and vice versa, now if we talk about best guitars for VH stuff, for example, you want a floyd or at least a reasonable trem because with a hardtail that type of music just doesn't feel right. All in all, as long as a guitar is playable and stays in tune ok, you can blaze through the pentatonic and mixolydian on it just fine 😁
🤔 sorry man, you lost me really. I said in the video this is my list… every player decides on their own best - a lot of players are associated with one specific guitar… in many cases it wasn’t just the first guitar they found and that is why there are interesting stories that players have about not being happy with one guitar and then finding their perfect guitar. It isn’t that the best guitar is the one in your hands - go and ask top players why they chose a specific guitar - it is that each person’s ultimate choice of best guitar for them is their own choice.
And also, if you just want to reduce blues rock to just blasting through some scales, and ignore the complexity and art of it then we are not in the same page at all man
@@JamesOnGuitar well you said it yourself, it's a players choice. In the old days guitarists used to have way fewer guitars, let alone good guitars, we are spoiled these days with the amount of good instruments. There's art and complexity in most instrumental music and blues rock is high energy and fun to listen to for a bit but you can't deny that it is quite simple in terms of note choice, it's easy to knock it out of the geanre but the art is in how you deliver those notes 🤘✌️
What happened to your R9? Did you prefer the thinner neck on the R0?
I still have it! I use it more than the r0 generally but think the r0 has a slightly more modern tone for the sort of blues rock i was thinking of 🤟🏼
@@JamesOnGuitar love it!
I had a Shanks late last year, certainly wasn't my favourite drive pedal. Tone is very subjective and probably didn't suit my amp.
Imo there is no "best for" guitar. The guitar which appeals to your eye is the most likely to inspire you. Ergonomics is probaby the next most important factor. Well here's my list which I don't imagine will surprise you.
1 - Gibson Custom Shop 1964 RI SG
2 - Murphy Lab Gibson Les Paul 1960 RI
3 - 1956 Gibson Les Paul Junior
4 - Fender Custom Shop Broadcaster 70th Anniversary
5 - Gibson Custom Shop 1959 RI ES-355
6 - Fender USA Stratocaster 1989
7 - Fender Masterbuilt Paul Waller 1950's Strat Hardtail HSS
🤔 i mean, ‘best’ (and a bunch of other similar words) are really just a simple way to frame something on youtube, but you know what I mean. But choosing the guitar that appeals to you by eye would also be picking best, as would going by ergonomics… considering i mentioned this is just my list 🤷🏽 but no, not surprised by your list 😂
Hi James can I win..
clean the strat please!🤣
