Here's a UA-cam video where I show off some tones with both a Strat and a Les Paul and talk about the virtues of each.
This is my sonic answer to the question, "Strat or Les Paul."

I personally prefer strats. I do think your amp setting is too trebley for the strat in this video though. You can get a beautiful smooth sound from them.

Blackmore used the bridge pickup for most riffs, he never used the middle as far as I know. What made it sound thicker is the preamp from the tape recorder that he used to push the amps (probably Marshal Major) hard and to shape the tone. And he played that particular riff with all upstrokes. That gives it the right attitude.
Great video, btw. Always a pleasure to watch and learn.

Man it's impossible to class ANY guitar as "better" than another. It's which ever guitar fits the needs of the player and the needs of the sounds in the song! This video was awesome in showing the strengths that each model has to offer! That's what I love about playing guitar, each model and style evokes a different emotion and feeling. Even plugging into different amps cam make you PLAY and FEEL differently. People ask me why I'm always buying and selling guitars, and why I don't stick with one or another for the last 15 years. I ask them why they don't wear the exact same jeans every day? Or why they don't eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches everyday! Variety is LIFE!! 🤘😃

I usually take a Les Paul standard, and a strat when I play a gig, and although I usually plan on playing both guitars during the gig, but a lot of times, what ever guitar starts the night, is the only one I might use for the whole show, that’s how great and versatile these guitars are, but they are 2 different animals, and it’s fun to change up, your sound, and dynamics of playing each one! Gotta have both, plus a casino, and tele! By the way, your videos are great, and informative, and your playing is something else! Great job!

Thank you for mentioning Earth, Wind and Fire and their jazzy clean tones. These tones grabbed and started influencing my guitarist's tastes before I was a guitarist! I'd have to say that Johnnie Graham and Al McKay tended to use Alnico humbuckers rather a lot, because that tone stayed in my head for years without my knowing it. It became the gold standard that I chased for years and missed, because I didn't know what I was chasing. The day I DID learn about that standard was the day I started buying guitars with Alnico humbuckers, then later the humbuckers themselves for swapping into existing guitars. I now have four sets of good Alnico humbuckers in four two-pickup guitars. Two of these were found that first day and bought later -- first a Hamer Sunburst Archtop (very Les Paul in feel and vibe), next a beautiful amber quilt-topped Schecter C-1 Élite which enhances Gibson-like wood choices, pickups and bridge/tail solutions with Fender-esque neck characteristics, scale length, and metal-ready EXTRA-jumbo frets! The other two were inexpensive guitars I modified with aftermarket pickups. I found this particular Ibanez RG22B in a pawn shop, rescued it, glued its cracked neck and replaced nearly everything but the tuners. It got a set of Epiphone Alnico Classics, which it uses to great advantage. I bought the Jackson JS22 Dinky DKA in Natural Oil about 19 months ago and caved in to the temptation to replace the (admittedly great-sounding) stock, ceramic, high-output humbuckers with equally high-output Alnico 2(!) bucks with double cream coils. It didn't change that guitar's bridge pickup sound very much, but the neck and middle switch positions sound noticeably better. To me. Who else matters?

I used to live a couple blocks from Guitar Center so when I decided to buy I went in and tried them ALL. Since I was a beginner and never owned an electric guitar it came down to the feel. How it felt in my hands, and how it felt when I played, even how I could position my right hand while playing.
For me NOTHING is sweeter than the Fender Stratocaster. Now I would take a Strat over any other guitar just because it feels so right in my hands.

I have both. My Strat has the HSS configuration and has a Suhr Thornbucker Plus in the bridge (Suhr V60LP single coils). I didn't stop there I went with Suhr Electronics, added a Treble Bleed Kit and Blend Knob. It's so versatile that it can give my expensive Les Paul Traditional Honey Burst a run. BUT.....the Les Paul thickness with 57 pickups and the Mahogany body with Maple cap is just a perfect mix of components. Love them both, get both and you'll have everything.

Here is my take on it. I think if your looking for two different sounds you need two different guitars. You can play with pedals, play with software but in the end, get the guitars and skip the effects. True tone comes from a well engineered instrument, the extra add ons are jut to enhance the real guitar. That’s all I have to say about that. Great job Tim, you gave us a real good breakdown of what they sound like by someone who knows how to play an instrument. Thanks for the vid.oh, and don’t discount the telecaster, it can be your secret weapon in your arsenal of sounds.

Those looking for a LP style in a good price range Id encourage Heritage, killer machines. Great vid as always!

I have a 1979 Anniversary Strat'. Early on I moved the middle pick up forward and shoved a Di-Marzio Humbucker, with a coil tap, between the bridge and middle pick ups. I also added a three way switch to have strat'/humbucker/both options. Some people call it sacrilege, but I don't care.

Strat, LP and also a 335 is a good choice of tonal options: I've got 3 guitars and I really don't need anything else now - a 1987 Bill Lawrence Japanese Strat, 1990 LP Studio, and a 1977 Yamaha SA1000 (Japanese 335 copy). The LP Studios can be found for really good prices sometimes, I got mine about 6 months ago for $750 with no case - it's a LP Standard without the binding basically and no chambers in the body like today's Studios.

Other considerations: strat has body cutout much more comfortable for some players to hold and play. also fretboard on strat has rosewood and maple options and i believe makes a big tonal and playing feel difference. I do not like rosewood on strat, love the maple. But i love the the rosewood on the LP (of course maple not an option, some have ebony which is another story). Picking style big difference because the strings are very close to the body on strat whereas the LP you can really hook your little finger under the strings between the two buckers and that is how I learned to double pick and palm mute so I was really lost and had to adapt first time I played a strat. Still do play differently on it. Harmonics and palm muting seem hard on strat since you dont have the tuneamatic bridge to rest hand on. LP is harder to get up high on the neck than the strat but if that’s your concern get an SG or V. Natural string sustain is greater on a LP as well, but the strat has a lot of life that resonates in your grip.. I never really was a huge whammy bar fan so if thats your real concern in there are better choices for dive bombing styles. If you like the Fender sound I would implore you to look at the Tele, this is to me the best Fender tone. Much more but just a few thoughts.

  • @ParaBellum2024

As a telecaster player (I sold my strats after buying a tele), I'm not surprised to see so many comments below about them being better than Les Pauls and strats.
Strats are more comfortable though, so I modded my standard tele by belt-sanding strat-style contours, and bought a Squier Jim Root, which not only has a belly contour, but two humbuckers - swapped out for Toneriders, and still not a Les Paul sound, but ok for me. I've also fitted neck bolt inserts to both, so I can bend the necks without fear of the screws coming loose. So there you go: Les Paul vs Stratocaster - Which Guitar Do You lIke More? Both, with their best features transferred to a telecaster.

For me: tripple Single-coil Strat + Tele Deluxe/WRHB (original vintage guitar and PU's) is a better combo of guitars then Gibson anything. I like playing Gibsons but I hate living with them and their finicky, fragile selves plus I just feel more comfortable on the longer scale Fenders. I enjoy having all kinds of guitars but those two Fenders are what I grab to go anywhere or gig.

    • @genol9679
      @genol9679 6 років тому

The Creamery makes a replica of the original WRHB and I agree, they sound better than humbuckers found in Gibson’s. I AB’d my Jazzmaster with the WRHB’s to a Les Paul Traditional and the WRHB’s have the deep tone but with more articulation!

I have a Epiphone LP Standard with Tonerider Rocksong Open Coil PUs and now a MIM Fender HSS Strat, which is all in all a bit better then my earlier Squier CV 60s. I prefer the Strat over the Epi LP because of its brighter and clearer sound, its more comfortable because of the ergonomic shape and lighter weight. And i like the thinner neck of the Strat. I like my Les Paul too, but the Strat feels more right to me. The HSS configuration gives a great versatility.

I play LP - coz it looks so rock and roll - and I have always loved the neck pickup sound. I have a studio and a black custom which is super heavy, something I like too. Have a tele too - which I prefer to the strat, once again because that classic shape makes me feel like picking it up and jamming - and it gets (for me) all the sounds that a strat does.

One trick I've used many times, to score a great deal on a new Gibson guitar is to check out Guitar Center regularly (Each weekend) right as the new Gibson models hit the walls... Guitar Center is all about turns and moving the old inventory off the walls to free up space for the new guitars.
The last Les Paul I purchased was a new 2013 Standard premium plus top, absolutely perfect, not a pick mark on it for $1,800.00.. It was discounted from $3,600.00 so half off.. Great guitar..
Last weekend I was at the local GC in SO Cal and I noticed they had 4-5...... 2017 Standards and Traditionals marked down to $1,399.00-$1599.00.. It's that time of the year again..The rest of the year keep your eye out for guitars they mark down that haven't moved. As I said before they are all about turns on their inventory, they monitor it closely..
Also GC has some surprising great deals on used gear... I picked up a 2014 Custom Shop J45 with and adirondack top for $1,500.00 Great guitar and deal.. But do your research on used gear first "Vintage Guitar" puts out a great pricing guide.. Ultimately I guess it all comes down to does the price seem to be right to you and does the guitar speak to ya?...
    Thanks for the Vid..

I saw Roy Buchanan over 2 nights just before he passed and he pulled strat/Les paul/and all the tele sounds, of course, but even gretsch/guild jangle sounds out of his tele. A true master. I'm pretty sure it was all in his hands coz I peeked over the fold back (yes, I was right at the front) and there was just a wah and a single switch (reverb?) running to, I believe, a Musicman amp. It was hard to tell coz it was turned around backwards!
If anyone knows who the bass player was on his last tour I'd be very grateful to know because he was a total mofo too.

I coil split the Gibson plus raise the neck pickup screw studs into a Strat Stagger to get more Strat clean tones with the bridge screw studs raised but flat to each other to cover Tele tones and then put the Dan Armstrong Blender Mod on the SSS Strat to blend into HSH for Gibson tones. No need for HSS Strat (I started there but switched to SSS and DABM because eventually you'll get an HH guitar and the HSS is redundant and you'll pine for SSS). That way either guitar can cover the classic tones of the other.

I have both. For me, playing my Les Paul Custom is just playing, goes out of tune, very heavy and I don't like the thicker and higher fret wires which also contributes to being out of tune. . Playing my Stratocaster is more of feeling like I'm on an endless Journey of possibilities. My Stratocaster solidly stays in tune and the fret board is so smooth. Comfortable in so many ways. My stratocaster can sound heavy using my compression and equalizer pedals in combination with a good distortion.

Of course it’s all subjective, but I think strats have a slight edge for more genres... etc....The tuning dependability alone is a bigger relief.
The lighter weight for wearing for longer playing without discomfort.
*** Also not mentioned, there are more comfortable cut outs and contours on strats.
If you could have only one guitar 🎸 for multiple genres, I’d choose a Strat style especially with a humbucker in the bridge far and away. Sometimes you can even get a splitter to get humbucker or single coil on bridge position.
Then price..... My biased opinion loves Strat. I also prefer comfortable closeness of a strats bridge. The contours of this guitar 🎸 scream comfort. This comfort means longer play and intimacy for playing guitar with less awkwardness.
Although both certainly have their place, if I could only have one I’d choose a strat for its versatility.
    😊👍👍👍

I have a strat, an LP and an arch top. They are very different, but I love them all. They cover all tones I like. : )

Great compare and description! I purchased a bridge guitar and so far it’s a nice compromise although I am still working out some of those nuance details - JEM77 from Japan 👍🏽

Tim you are a super cool dude! Appreciate all your videos on helping us wanna B's. Finding out you played the lead on runaway, one of my favorite songs, when I was a junior in high school makes you the man. That lead was over the top. To me the strat is a smoother playing guitar but hate the volume knob placement and the thin sound and a LP is so cool looking but the G can be a pain. I like PRS better and I do own all 3 but my Carvin CT-6 is my favorite.

Apples vs Oranges. Each has it's own sound. Are we doing a Fender vs Marshall amps too?

Tim, Ritchie Blackmore didn't record Smoke On The Water on a Strat actually, it was the neck pickup of an ES-335 and fingerpicking of course!

I've been playing a strat since 1975 obviously I love the strat. The les Paul is the best sounding and heavy on the shoulder when playing a two or three set gig.

The Fender American Elite HSS Shawbucker Stratocaster is the one to get and Les Paul Standard or Traditional the Gibson to get if money not a factor.

Interesting to see your pickup selector switch on your Les Paul to be facing 8-2 on a slant as opposed to the normal 12-6 (straight up and down)

I primarily played the Les Paul model for decades. Owned Strats here and there but they were never a primary guitar. Never liked the Telecaster. Played a Fender Charvel So Cal for a few years. Still really like that guitar. Then I bought a Paul Reed Smith S2 Custom 24 and then a S2 Custom 22 shortly thereafter. My PRS guitars have become my daily players. I never liked PRS guitars until they released the S2 models. Love them. These two will probably be the last guitars I ever buy.

Would have been good to hear a little more about the Tele, SG, and superstrats and how they all kind of cross over the camps of those two icons.
You mentioned the HSS Fenders, but you see a lot more HH and HSH dual cutaways (PRS, Suhr, Ibanez) today among musicians over a LP. Is that mostly a weight thing or for performance?

HSS strat for me. Best of both worlds, plus you get a trem. Don't want a trem, pop one more spring in the back. Can't go wrong.

Both, I want heavyness and versatility, i'd be ok with these two guitars but then i'd also crave for an hsh ibanez rg(rg550, rg655m, etc...).

I dropped a third pick-up in the LPJ, which is the value priced Gibby. with it's maple neck and third pup, it gets decent quack tones. at :26 the Strat gets a spankin' funk tone the Gibson can't touch. is it bridge/middle out of phase?

I own both, they sound good together, but my strat wins. My personal favorite combo is the Telecaster and SG. They sound great on stage with 2 people who know what they are doing. I love playing my Telecaster, but I have had 3 operations on my neck and 2 on my lower back, so my baby is a SG with dual P-90s. Blues to Black Sabbath, but you can do that with any guitar. It's the player not what the player's playin'.

Hey Tim, don't forget the Epiphone Les Paul for those on a budget! It's a real Les Paul, with Les Paul legally written on the headstock, because it's a Gibson owned company. And some of them are really good.

  • @DesignInNature

From an engineering design stand point; the Stratocaster is the more stable, ergonomic and efficient of the two. The body contours and light weight, the straight headstock angle, the position of the controls and even of the input jack seem all thought out to make it more human friendly. This is all objectively verifiable. However, the preference of SOUND of each guitar is very subjective, and bound to personal preference. They both sound glorious in their own way. For me personally, the guitar sound of Hendrix, SRV, Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Buddy Guy and Ritchie Blackmore, is more dear in my heart and head, than the tone of Jimmy Page, or Slash, or all the other iconic les paul players. Again, the guitar TONE, not the music. The music is equally beautiful to me. But the guitar sound of the Strat is what I love the most. If the les paul sound is what you hear in your head when you think of your prefered type of beautiful guitar music, then you will like the les paul better. It's as simple as that.

LP if you want a heavy flat slab of a guitar with fancy finishes.

Mod the strat for series parallel for the strat and get a thick sound with the stock single coils.
