Flash's failure can't be attributed to simply one thing. It really is a confluence of so many different things; a perfect storm really. They all play a factor on different levels, depending on who you are (ie. if you're plugged in to the nerd culture, or if you're just a casual filmgoer):
    - Ezra Miller's legal and personal troubles
    - DCEU movies (excluding Joker and The Batman) generally not having a good reputation for being entertaining movies
    - Piggybacking on the previous note, DC and WB in general making more news for their BEHIND-THE-SCENES drama, than the movies themselves (which collectively aren't good).
    - General Audiences having fatigue for RUN-OF-THE-MILL Superhero Stories. Can't say that for all superhero movies when Guardians 3 and Spider-Verse have made bank, and have gotten positive reviews.
    - James Gunn's intentions to reboot these movies anyway, so that makes audiences question why some of these are worth watching anyway, if it's not gonna matter. That's an unfortunate by-product of the "Shared Universe" storytelling model that Marvel (and DC to a lesser extent) has popularized.
    - Poor Marketing, although not for a lack of trying (and it's hard to promote a movie when your lead star is in legal trouble)
    - The Nostalgia Bait is blatant; putting Michael Keaton front-and-centre. And maybe it's up for debate, but Keaton's Batman was a good 30 years ago. Younger people may not be as inclined to see him as Batman, as they were either too young, or not even around for his 3-year stint in the role. Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield benefit from being more recent icons. Yeah, Tobey was 20 years ago, but 10 years could make a difference.
    - Too many other (better) movies coming out around the same time.
    - Multiverse stories being played out. Considering the most recent Best Picture Oscar Winner was about the multiverse, Spider-Verse being a few mere weeks ago, and to a lesser degree Marvel building something with their multiversal stories, audiences just might already be over the multiverse. Flash didn't indicate that it was going to do something incredible or different with its story. Despite it clearly being a loose adaptation of "Flashpoint", the movie to general audiences could've been seen as blatantly ripping off No Way Home's use of former superhero actors. Just unfortunate timing.
    - General word-of-mouth becoming more mixed closer to the release date. People like Tom Cruise and Stephen King singing the movies praises probably elicited more eyebrows than actual desire to see the movie. Nothing in the trailers indicated that THIS was THE movie Hollywood needed right now... And while you had your fair share of UA-camrs reviewers sing the movie's praises, none of them called it an absolute banger, or called it must-see. Add to that the reviews that skewed more negative, which lessened any positive outlooks.
There's probably a bunch of stuff I'm missing, but these are what's coming to my mind right now. And fanboys/fangirls don't get pissed about the DCEU comments. I like some of the DCEU, but I'm not delusional enough to think that they're beloved by general public. Fact of the matter is, they're simply not. No one was flocking to the theatres to see "Justice League", the way they flocked to see "Infinity War" and "Endgame".

Dan Murell has a WB/DC Flashpoint what if scenario vid I found interesting.
The casting to me was always great for the Justice League. I'm okay with Snyder's direction to start off the slate, but the main issue was always the WB/DC suits trying to keep up with the Jones's.
Marvel was already 5 years into their verse build by 2013's MoS release, Nolan's DK Trilogy just finished in 2012. So instead of just being patient with MoS, into Batman, WW, MoS 2 etc, the WB/DC execs at that time (Kevin Tsjihara into Geoff Johns I think) were CONSTANTLY side eyeing Feige's MCU box office openings and never had the patience to take it's time to build each Justice League character slate. And it kept happening when Geoff Johns stepped down and Walter Hamada changes took place.
*And I'm one of those that really dig BvS Ultimate Edition, but it's easy to see that film was WB/DC execs trying to fast track the Justice League for a quick buck, rolling out Batman tactic etc.
*My only change would be not even doing Suicide Squad anything, focus on the main JL crew first then JL films, then expand from there into SS (or The SS), Shazam, Harley Quinn, Peacemaker etc.
Then more changes to The Flash (which I really dug too) due to the new Gunn DCU plan, ugh. Whatever it is just stick to it WB/DC.
But I doubt that happens, Zaslav sucks, can't stand what he did to HBO Max changes and other WB quadrants, I don't care about real estate greed shows or ghost hunting or Trump Crime Family docs pushed in my face 24/7 in the new Max...ugh Zaslav SUCKS!

I think that what Roxy might be getting at is that there’s a MAJOR overlap between Barbie and Oppenheimer and cinefiles. And I think that actually hurts Nolan because yes, he’s got the mature audience, and Barbie has the younger audience. BUT the people who go to movies based off directors are gonna have a tough time deciding between Greta Gerwig And Nolan opening night, and that’s an audience I feel like Nolan would like to have to himself.

Checked out of The Idol, it's two shows and only one works- the interesting look into struggling pop star daily life I dig...
Then the other show is Sam Levinson letting The Weeknd run roughshod and do his dream job realization of being the lead in a Cinemax After Dark 30min episodes that are laugh out loud bad. Yeah that part of the show doesn't work (and Weeknd can't act either) while Lily Rose Depp does great in a bad show that wants to be Nick Wynding Refn's "Neon Demon" meets Daisy Jones and the Six. Also, I like to consider myself a die hard, and I was let down at shang chi which was like my most anticipated, I fell asleep 3 times during eternals and almost bailed and went home, morbius was whack, I enjoyed Black Adam, no way home was awesome, but then Dr strange was another let down, and so I skipped wakanda forever, ant-Man and guardians til they were on D+, same with Shazam 2, waited for max.. also skipped spider verse, and only went to flash for Keaton and I have no plans on going to blue beetle or Aquaman either... They also forgot how to make good movies. They only get lucky every now and then. The bar for a “good movie” has dropped SO low. These studios seem to think they can just make anything. They are all going purely off of data instead of creativity. Not working out for them.
Those few movies you mentioned can’t protect a studio from all the losses. I for one hope and pray people continue to speak with their wallets in the way that they currently are. Lotta bombs.

It really is a bummer The Flash isn't doing well. It's one of the better DCEU movies they've made so far. It's not perfect, but it's a very solid superhero film. Obviously, there a number of factors why it and some other movies are underperforming, but I think one of the biggest reasons is the late night shows being shut down due to the writers strike. It's a big platform for celebrities to promote their stuff and generate buzz, but with the shows on hold, some of that buzz isn't there. As for DC as a whole, I'm also confused about what the plan is. It would've made more sense to simply start over from scratch after the final DCEU movie comes out (which I believe is Aquaman 2) or they keep the DCEU going and simply make better movies and start a coherent through line. This idea of rebooting the franchise but still keeping some elements of the DCEU isn't making a whole lot of sense. I'm sure Gunn and Safron know what they're doing and have a good plan that'll become clearer in time, but right now, I'm not seeing it. As far as Roxy's TV picks, I'm glad she's liking Secret Invasion. She was asked her opinion on it last night on TWG and refused to talk about it, so I assumed she didn't like it. Bupkis sounds like something I'd probably like. I saw the trailer a while back and it looked good. That incestuous scene you two were talking about makes me even more interested in seeing now. With this movie however I realized I don't really care for the flash character, Micheal Keaton is 70 and hasn't played batman for 30 years, and I think supergirl has a bit of an uphill battle being a brand new character. After seeing the trailer I think they should have just did Ben and Henry as alternate versions.

Edit: There is no "Superhero Fatigue", there is bad movie fatigue. It just happens to be most of the stuff studios are churning out are Superheroes, but there are plenty of movies that aren't, Star Wars for example, people also fatigued with those recent releases. They aren't superhero movies. When movies are good, they're good. When they're bad, they're bad. Genre has fuck all to do with it.

I'm using a day of my PTO for July 21 and will be seeing both Oppenheimer and Barbie on opening day on the biggest screens possible (IMAX 70 mm for Oppenheimer and Dolby for Barbie). I think that an important word to be used when discussing the audiences for both movies, especially concerning crossover appeal is "curiosity."
I'm excited for both movies, but I'm more curious about Barbie because I have absolutely no idea what to expect from it. I love Greta Gerwig as a filmmaker. Little Women was one of my favorite and one of the best, in my opinion, movies of 2019. But I have no real sense of what kind of movie she made. The trailers and advertising has been great at not giving much of anything away and I appreciate that, so I'll be going into Barbie cold and on a kind of blank slate. None of the marketing has turned me off of this film, so my curiosity is at a high for Barbie. With Oppenheimer, I know, beyond almost any doubt, that I'll be witnessing a unique, gripping, and immersive cinematic experience with sophisticated storytelling that'll keep you on your toes mentally as well as emotionally, something that only Christopher Nolan can deliver. My curiosity stems from what that cinematic experience will look like as a 3 hour, rated R film based on real people that actually lived and real events that actually took place, something new for Nolan. I know what I'll be walking into with Oppenheimer more than Barbie and admittedly I have more expectations for Oppenheimer, but with Barbie, I'm just excited to see what this ride will be.
I'm a guy who loves movies and both cherishes and respects the movie theater-going experiences more than anyone I know and possibly more than some my age (31 going on 32). Any movie from Netflix, Amazon, Apple, whatever streaming site that I'm interesting in seeing that is given a theatrical release, I see in the theaters. Point. Blank. Period. To me, you see new movies in theaters. That's not even a question for me. So, probably the biggest crossover appeal for both movies comes from...people that love movies...that or people who see, as I do, that Warner Bros. was being petty as fuck for releasing Barbie (the film with, on paper, the bigger audience with wider box-office appeal that seems tailor-made for 2023 movie audiences) the same day as the new film from a man who brought them big bucks and great prestige with franchise films and original films for nearly 20 years. Universal announced Oppenheimer's release date in October 2021. Warner Bros. announced Barbie's release date...six months later in April 2022. Just. Plain. Petty. While none of this is why I'm seeing both movies, it is a big reason why I'm seeing both on the same day on opening weekend.
