I got to see AIC in Shreveport, Louisiana in Dec of "91 0pen for Van Halen. AIC was just getting radio play in that area at that time. I remember AIC coming out and they just amazed everyone. So freaking loud, and crystal clear. Layne sang his ass off! Even after the concert people were walking to their cars just blown away by AIC. And especially how Layne just killed it up there. The guy was so freaking powerful with his voice.
My God, what a band. Talk about a super group. Could Layne sing a wrong note?! The older I get, the more I realize how important he is. In my opinion, the most original of all the Seattle singers. And that rhythm section is as good as you get, and THEN Mike Mccready's guitar?!?!! Super group indeed. I only wish I had more than one album to wear out.
There was a second with 16-17 tracks but they could never get Layne or Mark to come to the studio to lay down vocals. I think they were trying to make that work pretty much up until Baker died.
@@erinnothingtoseehere4992 I can only imagine what it would have sounded like. For them to come up with these tunes in such a short period of time is a testament to their uncanny chemistry. Very true what you said with your good choice of words. So many singers left us much too soon....Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Kurt Cobain, Keith Flint, etc.
@@ProMrLecoq01 I recommend ANYTHING from their early years! The Essential Alice in Chains is great because it has songs from most all of the albums they made with Layne. Chris Cornell's range is C#2-G6, Layne Staley's range is G1-D7, he did those notes live too, he hit D7 when he killed himself, Chris Cornell's range is literally contained in Layne's range. However, Cornell only reaches 4 octaves in one song: Singing professionals have said that Cornell never used his full chest and head singing strength, because if he did, he could perhaps hit more notes, being a baritone he had a lot of technique to go up and down the pitch, without sounding like a little girl. Besides, on Soundgarden's B-side records, Cornell had VOLUME, EXTENSION, DEPTH AND REACH so much after so many years he admits he couldn't reach all the octaves, due to aging and lifestyle, but he was the GREATEST singer of the 90s. Layne might be close, Cornell was IMBATIBLE.

“For ten long years. Your love affair has got to go.” I used to think of heroin as my first love. I remember even telling my then-girlfriend (now-wife) that she would always be my second love. That heroin would always be first in my heart. What a thing to say to someone. I imagine those words were hurtful. It just goes to show you that type of mind state. Thankfully, she stuck with me and saw me through. She is and will always be the love of my life. Wish Layne could have found something to replace his “love affair” with heroin.

Eddie Vedder once was Quoted ( in the Pearl Jam video “ 20” ) that Mike can reach down inside himself & just play something totally outrageous, and his solo here is proof of that. I respectfully disagree my friend one can use that excuse but Layne had been a junkie for many many years and was dying a slow horrible death... the death of his ex-girlfriend had little to do with him dying as a junkie... I'm a 52 year old recovering junkie myself and I was listening to Alice in Chains when they hit the scene... Layne chose to die alone and that's the way that he died
I actually agree with you. So many people keep saying that Layne died because of Demri's death, but I totally disagree. She was his ex-girlfriend, and they were not even together when Demri died, and they broke up because Layne was cheating on her (I read that somewhere). So like you said, poor, beautiful Layne died because of drugs and because he could not overcome his drug addiction and depression. Demri had nothing to do with his death. I am sure Layne got upset when she died, but that did not kill Layne. Be safe and healthy, my friend. I am happy you are doing better now.
@@wesleybullock814 sad but true. I think many would like to romanticize such things but it's just not that. As you said it's a slow and horrible way to go. That being said, he must have thought leaving would be better than staying. That's what bums ME out the most personally.
You were blessed to have seen him. I agree that the death of Demri really took away his will to live for a time. I do think he wanted to move on but as any addict knows any person will always take the 2nd position behind the drug or addiction itself. Not only that but not too many women were beating down his door after he let himself go and lost all his teeth and everything. I think he couldn't really move on because of the shame and self loathing that come along when the drugs take over

We had Layne for such a short time. There will never be a voice like that again. Forever missing this enormous talent.
Everyday miss him
We all miss him, his voice was otherworldly.
For real
That solo.
It's summer 2024, it's hot and I'm once again in awe of this song, the musicians and most of all Layne and his talent.
Such a great fucking song.
I don’t think the xylophone guy gets enough credit for the amazing performance shown in this song. You can truly feel the emotion he plays with.
True 🖤
Give it up to the Xylophone guy. His instrument is the only one that starts with a Z but is spelled with an X
He's like the Layne Staley of xylophone players.
Nalgas Sin Carne
That’s Skerik. He’s a badass.
I’d rather listen to Layne live over any of his studio recordings. Dudes voice was unreal. Rip Layne.
Yup and hits his marks. Even in recording they said he almost always nailed everything in one or two takes.
* an unbelievable voice 🌼
Great singer. No one sounded like Layne. Great hair too. 😢
Me too. Their albums are a little too smooth with overlay.
It is like AIC, after listening to how much they grew, I often wonder where they would have gone after the AIC AIC record. Both of Layne's bands were seriously peaking. One of the great tragedies in Rock music that Layne couldn't beat it. His talent and potential were truly awesome. Cheers!!!
Eric O'Brien totally agree!
Yeah, this and Temple Of The Dog are stone cold classics.
One of the top 3 supergroups ever for me, other two being Infectious Grooves and Team Sleep.
I've fought addiction my entire life, I'm 47. Recently quit taking Suboxone and man it was rough but now I'm finally free 🆓 from everything...I miss the 80's & 90's Layne always takes me back..God Bless Everyone ✌️

Can we just take a moment to appreciate Barrett Martin. Truly great drumming.
I concur smithy
This whole band was so talented, I wish we had gotten more, but I am grateful for this masterpiece of an album.
as i had just tuned in from another thread..i advise listeners to checkout the daisy album by brand new....
without the xylophone dude, this band ain't shit 🤣🤣
Amazing group. Super group
As one who survived that slow suicide, I want to thank Layne and Chris Cornell for keeping me alive during that epic struggle. I've been clean for years now but would not have made it if not for the music. You are truly missed and hopefully you know the people you touched and the lives you saved.
Hey butch cool shit also a recovering junkie been clean the better part of 12 yrs. couple f-ups but man remember setting a bath n chilling to AIC dirt cassette getting high asfuck can't believe I didn't drown I was a sick fuck for a long time

Heartbreaking to hear a young man singing to his own soul like that, but I love hearing him do it. God Speed Brother

I've always been a fan, but this solo is simply a concentrated version of everything cool about him :)
My God! That guitar got the shit played out of it! Amazing!
Melodic chaos!
@NY DEVIL they are all cool
God, I can’t even express how much I love this song and Layne. He is my absolute favorite singer of all time. His voice was such a power house. Soothing and powerful at the same time. The amount of talent this man had was amazing. It breaks my heart we lost him way too soon. Layne you are missed dearly by so many.
Yeah…. Absolutely true I can’t stop listening Layne’s voice….I hope he knows how loved he was …
I can't get enough.
We need to hook up
YES!! I love ring them bells he sang with Heart 😢
Very true what you said with your good choice of words. So many singers left us much too soon....Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Kurt Cobain, Keith Flint, etc.
It was one of the deepest concerts in human history to date.
Maybe the only time you have seen them do "wake up"...One of the deepest fckn song of a life time..Thank y'all....
Tragic loss saw this show live rest in peace layne will never be another voice like his 😢
Damn. His voice always gives me chills. We miss you Layne
This is the first I heard of him and I heard it in the first note, lori meyers.
@@coreycox2345 OMG! The first you've heard??? Are you in for some good listening!
Rhonda Haines what do you recommend of him and aic
@@ProMrLecoq01 I recommend ANYTHING from their early years! The Essential Alice in Chains is great because it has songs from most all of the albums they made with Layne. With that said though, anything with Layne on vocals kicks ass! I love their newer music as well. William is great! Ranieri Fog is great! I cannot lie... Layne was and will always be my favorite!
ProMrLecoq01 I recommend alice in chains unplugged session

some people will never understand how beautiful this song is.
Was his way out song he knew it and we lost such a talented human to heroin such a great singer he already knew it though beautiful song and river of deceit
The only man I know of that sounds better live than in a studio. Artists these days need to take a lesson from the greatest vocalist ever!
Wake up, Long Gone Day are much better live
Brian molko too
Chris Cornell's range is C#2-G6, Layne Staley's range is G1-D7, he did those notes live too, he hit D7 when he killed himself, Chris Cornell's range is literally contained in Layne's range.
However, Cornell only reaches 4 octaves in one song:
Singing professionals have said that Cornell never used his full chest and head singing strength, because if he did, he could perhaps hit more notes, being a baritone he had a lot of technique to go up and down the pitch, without sounding like a little girl.
@@drvitorhugoc Between Jeff Buckley, Chris Cornell, and Layne Staley for the best of the 90s. It is subjective between these for most people. I personally prefer Layne but they are interchangeable.
@@drvitorhugocsou um profundo admirador do cornell, porém, ele não atingia notas altas com a potência vocal que layne atingia. Mas como vocalista ele era mais completo realmente. Layne era um cantor único.
what a treasure
So good
Just wish Layne left more music, because every damn song is so beautiful
Ikr so tragic. He tried. Rehab 13x. I went once, best decision. I wish our government actually gave a fuck re addiction to study it. The world lost one hell of a vocalist, talent, seemed a good guy - Layne.
E Fox well he never released them they weren’t done
Peter Herakov me too but we have to cherish what he did give us💯🍻
200th like for this awesome comment
@Matthew Anthony why wouldnt he want it released? Kurt's post humous 3cd box set was amazig for fans. The lack of production made it more beautiful.
“For ten long years. Your love affair has got to go.”
I used to think of heroin as my first love.
Ten long years man.
I guess he couldn't once he lost Demri :(
Layne: *breaths*

Eddie Vedder once was Quoted ( in the Pearl Jam video “ 20” ) that Mike can reach down inside himself & just play something totally outrageous, and his solo here is proof of that. Layne’s vocals and Mike’s playing , along with all the other members this performance was the stuff of legends . How lucky were those who witnessed this live ……. God Bless those who are no longer with us for one reason or another …. Life is short , and moments like these are fleeting , so enjoy everything and everyone whenever you can …. 🤞
Chris Cornell had a great comment on Mike too where he was talking about making the guitar solo for Reach Down. It was something like "he was insane, he's a rockstar, like he's infected. that's going to come out"

Deepest song I’ve ever heard. Has got me through some dark dark times. So grateful for this footage.
One of the great losses of rock
His charisma is up there w morrison.
Grateful to have this.
There has never been anyone like Layne. His voice, stage presents, raw emotion, and the uncanny ability to make the most unpleasant, dark, and most disturbing things, beautiful, in a way you just can't help but to feel his pain and understand it. Perfect way to describe Layne's art. He was able to destroy any mask you might be wearing and let you there naked to just FEEL

Glad you are here
Good work.
Layne was a tortured soul ..but he was a kind soul ..In all the pain of his addiction..the grips of his addiction ..he still reached out with a cautionary tale for those of us that chose to live ...what a fucking legacy he left behind ..I think of Layne Staley ..Mike Starr ..and Chris Cornell every day ..all 3 were good hearted humans along with others but these 3 stand out ..when their pathes were dark they shared light so that others would not lose their way ..their footing if you will ...what a brave act of kindness they bestowed on their fellow man ..I pray for the souls of these 3 selfless men ..☮🎶🤘✌😎🖤☠❤❤❤💋..

His voice still gives me chills
Fuk, to be able to go back and behold in all its glory …. If only eh fellas? Landmark era, time , persons, mindset, chain wallets, vans , hemp necklaces, car stereos…. Didn’t know how good we had it……. Rip Layne
I was blessed to have been at this show. Some shows are powerful..this one changed my life. It has taken years to try to watch this set as it just tears me up to see. The world is darker without his talents. He just couldn't live without his woman by his side after her death. Tragic...just tragic
@@Ичкерия90х I concur
@@wesleybullock814 sad but true. I think many would like to romanticize such things but it's just not that. As you said it's a slow and horrible way to go. That being said, he must have thought leaving would be better than staying. That's what bums ME out the most personally.
You were blessed to have seen him. I agree that the death of Demri really took away his will to live for a time. I do think he wanted to move on but as any addict knows any person will always take the 2nd position behind the drug or addiction itself. Not only that but not too many women were beating down his door after he let himself go and lost all his teeth and everything. I think he couldn't really move on because of the shame and self loathing that come along when the drugs take over
Mike mccready got to be the most underrated guitar player imho

Bullshit; he was very talented. Much more than a Cobain for instance. A mediocre singer and guitarplayer.
Listening to Mad Season just tears my fucking chest open man, the pain Layne must have been going through is absolutely fucking insane, I've never felt the pain of another through their music in such a way. Some of Cornell's music does it but not to the same level of heartache as Laynes
AIC MTV unplugged, nutshell always gets me, Layne is singing his own eulogy
So painful. It's like you really can hear Layne's agony. Wonderful performance.
Yes :( especially in those last few wake ups
You can also hear it in their live version of junkhead on UA-cam. The quality isn't the best but Layne patches that up with his angelic vocals
His voice here is just unreal. So clear and powerful. I miss his sound so much.
I agree. And his emotion is palpable
i love the crowd's reaction when Layne starts to sing... it's as if everyone is wondering if this frail leaf will be able to deliver, then he opens his mouth and a tidal-wave of awesomeness washes over everyone...
