garrison0532082 Ur funny. What's so difficult to understand? It actually depends on the standard. If it's a competition, what are the standards? You could probably Google vocalist of the year in his active years and see what rock magazines said at the time. But to cite one of many examples, SEBASTIAN BACH, was by far a way more powerful vocalist. Judging by range and power and how long he could carry a note. It's not even a question. Hence why I said, for HIS style Layne was great, but if you include all vocalists, no way the best.
That last “Man in the Box” chorus...Layne is channeling the power of the friggin Sun! These two recordings are absolutely perfect vocals and music. So amazing.

Still listening in 2025. I think that some, most of us who listen here have a special receptor for Layne's voice. It creates an ecstatic resonance, as he sings with body, mind--with all he's got, poor soul, with that wiry frame he gave it all until there was nothing left for him--nuance within intensity, breath control and soaring vibrato, brazen sexuality and little-kid goofiness, sinuous hoarseness and musicality flowing through him like an electrical current. Some people describe his voice as overrated. I understand: if you don't have the organic, chemical reaction that seems inbuilt, you may not resonate with it. This physical response to Staley's voice reminds me of Alex in A Clockwork Orange listening to Beethoven's 9th, transported, in all his perversity, among the angels, or of the image of Beethoven himself as played by Gary Oldman in Immortal Beloved, swimming in a sea of stars as his own mind produces The Ode to Joy. (Shout out to Gary Oldman, whose astonishing range has given us Sid Vicious, Winston Churchill, George Smiley, and Beethoven over his acting career.) Jerry, Mike and Sean rip it, as well--goes without saying. Each deserves his own paean.

i saw them in melbourne with Suicidal Tendencies in 1991. Robert Trujillo was with Tendencies then and of course Layne was still alive. It was one of the better concerts Ive been to. Tendencies for about 45mins then at least 90 mins of Chains. They were in top form, although Sean was a bit pissed off with something as he trashed his drumkit at then end of the show. What got me the most was Laynes singing and Jerrys guitar tone. These guys were the real deal, all the other bands were shit in comparison, just riding on their coat tails.
That voice!!! It's the voice of my youth. I wish I could look back on Layne and my youth in happiness. I wasted my youth. I wasted my youth just as Layne wasted his life. And I'm not being mean. I, somehow, turned my life around. Layne never could. And it's so fucking sad. I would love to be able to say we both made it out of our pit of drug addiction. Wish I could feel like I'm sharing my future with his. I hear his voice and I'm transported back in time. But sadly to a time he never escaped from. It's so bittersweet. I only know the man from his music but I wish he could know how much he helped me exercise my demons through his voice. His demons helped purge mine. And I hope that somehow he can know this. Thank you Layne.
Layne and Jerry, with their vocal harmonies, were the Don and Phil Everly of grunge metal...if, and only if, Phil Everly had shredded on a G & L Rampage axe with a curvaceous, topless pinup girl painted on it.

Saw Rush 2112 tour. AMAZING!!!
There's no place like home❤
i saw them in melbourne with Suicidal Tendencies in 1991.
Ford Driver Thats it, real deal...
I'd literally give my right arm today to go back in time and see this show. No band before or since will ever sound like AIC.
Can't imagine why Sean would be pissed. Just watching this video, today is the best day of my life.
Last sentence is facts
So jealous
That overhead shot is so aesthetically pleasing and is so iconically them.
this shit is just phenomenal!
one of the defining moments of the Grunge movement. Just epic.
This is underrated and I like it like that
Why
Cantrell's got a distinctive voice but Staley just nails the insane chorus in Man in the Box. I can't think of a current singer who has his style.
raboox9 there's plenty with his style but nobody that even comes close with his talent.
Ok I've watched this at least 25 times in the past 4 days. Simply does not get any better than early Alice
This Stage Performance is like a Source of Energy. Outstanding Showmanship. RIP LEGEND s 🌹 ❤ from India. Deadly fan🇮🇳
The elegance that the bandmates share during this performance is wondrous!!!!!
(I think it's because of the way it's filmed...)
Sir Layne Staley.
Who’s watching this in 2025?
Layne and Jerry, with their vocal harmonies, were the Don and Phil Everly of grunge metal...if, and only if, Phil Everly had shredded on a G & L Rampage axe with a curvaceous, topless pinup girl painted on it.
