why does darkness and depression always make the best damn music. guess it says alot about humanity and suffering. R.I.P. brother we all miss you

It's something we all easily identify with my friend. If it helps, I drew inspiration in observing my own suffering and created this philosophical musing. "Suffering is to life what the fire is to the forge". I truly hope those who read this draw strength from it knowing that what they are going through will make them stronger. If they let it.

    • @vegan.atheist.weirdo

I'm working on a project right now that addresses this, but the short explanation I've arrived at (diagnosed & hospitalized with MDD way back at age 18, now 52): Depression and darkness aren't muses, and they don't lead to great art. It's the intense empathy, the unguarded humanity these people shared that made them amazing poets and musicians, and that sensitivity also opens us up to the darkness in a way that most people never quite reach. Whatever causes this thing we've labeled as depression is really about being a living tuning fork, with every emotion setting off that resonance. When you feel all the suffering around you like a constant vibration, how else can you be expected to respond?

Then MM reciprocates the gesture... quick, quiet, quaint. Brothers, doing what they were born to do. Damn, Mike Mc~ what a trooper. He's survived, & thrived, thru the rehabs...the lowest low's; the countless comrades FALLEN by the ills of their craft. The ills, of being human. He's an icon.

It's amazing the way all the 90s alternative banks pay tribute to each other. No other genre of music does that with such sincerity. Truly a special time for music that doesn't get enough credit for the impact on history

They all blew up unexpectedly when they weren't even trying to become commercially successful, so I think that's a lot of it. They were all friends before the hype.

Yes it does, I'm 49 years old and any respectable 20 year old musician who plays an actual instrument gives 90s alternative all the credit it deserves as far as I'm concerned.....

    •  4 роки тому

Bands did that all through the 60's and 70's. Grunge was always a throwback.

    • @commenter6763
      @commenter6763 4 роки тому +2

@ Sub Pop wasn't a major at the time. Chris even said they waited a few years to sign to a label to begin with. Of course he wanted to sell records and make a living with music, but there is a side to him that it was also kind of a job that he fell into. There is a difference between making a living at it and having people put you on a grunge Mount Rushmore. That is my interpretation. For example, when they got big, he had to try to understand what it meant for him and his music. He says things like this in a number of interviews. None of them expected worldwide famous status even though every kid who is into music dreams about it.

@@commenter6763 They grew up in the clubs together, opening for one another. Many times the only people at the show were a few dedicated fans, friends/family, and the other bands that were on the card for the night. They really grew up together as artist and thought of themselves more of a family than competitors. They cheered each other on, helped each other out, and even mourned each other when they left us.

There's almost a feeling of denouement, as in all of our heroes from our youth are beginning to ride into the sunset. They were the voice of the young, the rebellious, with the world in front of them. Now they're getting older, and the river of deceit is taking all of us closer to our own Decembers.
Still makes me cry, but for totally different reasons the older I get. Grunge forever; Layne forever; Always with an eye toward Seattle.
    Rock on, Chris. Rock on.

Interesting; but I did not catch that vibe at all! These guys are only in their 50's, not their 80's. Not to mention that they are playing at MSG, not the state and county fair circuit. Plus if you are a musician over 30, which even beiber is only 7 years away from; who wants to be playing for teens anyways. You can only go so far with songs about anger with your parents, teachers, jocks and bullies, etc

The truth is never knowing just assumed it was what it was, along with the solitude came great gifts in others eyes ours only question each sun rise why, sun set convinced it was just part of life in the years understanding it was always something inside that another called "mental health" stigma for life while all along it was just what it was no shame to it, after hearing there was some destination to it we barreled forward the river of deceit to the ignorance of educated beliefs as it is today, praying in mind one distant understanding that I am what I was born to be nothing else nothing less. Rip bro

True which makes it so IRONIC that the song says the PAIN IS SELF CHOSEN. It isn't. Depression casts a gloom on all you see or hear. It hurts and people self-medicate. Layne's eyes showed the pain of an abusive childhood. Something happened that he could not run away from, and every safe space disappeared. The DEATH RATE from DEPRESSION is 20%. ONE IN FIVE, if untreated. DEPRESSION KILLS.

Chris's friends feel that he never really recovered from Andrew's death. Given what I've seen of McCready before and after, I don't think he really did either, or if he did, it took a long time do so.
I can't imagine being a surviving member of any of the Big Four Grunge bands, having seen so many friends from that scene die. Andrew from Mother Love Bone, Mike and Layne from AiC, Chris from Soundgarden, Kurt from Nirvana, Scott from STP, Mia Zapata of the Gits and Stefanie Sargent from 7 Year Bitch.

Why do I love Chris Cornell, because he was kind and the sweetest guy with so much compassion for others. Chris is the type of guy that he would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He didn't have a mean and hateful bone in his body. That is the reason why he will be my favorite singer off all time.

I am a 48 year old father of two and I am literally sitting here in tears listening to this with tears rolling down my face. Layne and Chris are two of my all time favorite artist and hearing one pay tribute to the other knowing they are both gone just really hit me. This was one of the first CDs I purchased when I got my portable cd player as a graduation gift. My grandpa took me to the store to pick out a few CDs when he realized he got me a gift that I could not use yet and we got Mad Season and another that I cannot quite remember (it was 30 years ago so I get a mulligan). My grandpa actually really liked the Mad Season cd, well some of it, since he did get me a car adapter two so we listened to a song or two on the way home. He is gone too. It seems like everything great about that time of my life has gone to the other side. I have a few good friends left, a few left us, but there is always the music we listened to.
