I was interested to see how you joined the 2nd board and supported it as the CAD model has one less support. I've been wrestling with that problem myself. It would be great if the corner section was uninterrupted to slide your chair/ legs in :/ but would probably require a pretty serious structure underneath and the maximum length of the 2nd board would be much less. Would love to hear your thoughts on this? Cheers
Hi!! First, thank you! I’m glad you liked how the desk turned out! The birch and the red tinted woods were relatively cheap, but with the Purple Heart and Zebra Wood I wasn’t so lucky 😅. I connected the two boards underneath the desk using a few metal face plates and some screws. I thought this would be strong enough to hold up the tops and allow me to have an open bottom for my chair and legs. But that wasn’t strong enough so I added the 4th leg I had made. I have thought about adding some structure that would run the length of the desk underneath (made of more wood, or potentially metal) to allow me to have the uninterrupted style, but for now it’s honestly not much of an inconvenience. Maybe in a later video!
@@NatetheMaker Yes, I agree, a central support would be the way forward. I'll let you know if I go down this route but I might just build 2 desks for additional functionality. I'm going for iron pipe supports this time and a ready made butcher block from a kitchen supplier.

Thank you so much! The larger section is 6ft x 2 ft, and the shorter section is 4ft x 2ft. And just used wood glue for the entire build, nothing special for the end grain.
I used two Simpson Strong-Tie galvanized Tie Plates. They are flat and I just used small wood screws to attach the plates to both sides, and it works great!
So the entire desk probably cost around $400. The Zebra Wood and Purple Heart were huge portions of that. I think you could make this desk for around $150-$200 using less expensive woods. Even then, its a gigantic desk with 10 feet of room, so when I look at it like that it makes me feel better about my price point 😅
Why did you choose to use a roller for the polyurethane? The finish is the part I'm most nervous about so trying to figure out the pros and cons of different finishing techniques.
I thought it would be easier to spread with the roller, but it was a slight mistake. It left several bubbles on the surface after rolling. I had to sand down the polyurethane more between each layer. Probably should have used a brush to apply it, might have made things easier. I hope your project comes out looking great!

I don't remember the exact angle I set, but with some trig and measurements I found the legs (the ones perpendicular to the desk) have an internal angle of about 85 degrees. For your own calculations: The legs are an isosceles trapezoid, with a large base of 21.825 inches, a small base of 15 inches, and legs that are 29.25 inches each.

late comment but im doing something similar, what brackets did you use to join the two countertops together?

Is it easy to clean the surface? I want to make a table for my kids for drawing? Is it easy to clean the surface of this kind of wood?
It’s easy to clean dust and simple food/drink spills. Haven’t tried markers or crayons yet unfortunately. Water based markers should be okay though!

Hi! I didn't glue the end grain or the outside edge of the desk, just glued the inside where the pieces touch.
