    I bought this for my friend for his birthday as we just moved into a new house and he finally has room for a workshop. The bench was very easy to set up ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh They center support is a little difficult to snap in and out of place at first but at least then we know the bench is secure. It was a pleasant surprise when we saw it came with clamps. I apparently missed that in the description. My friend loves the versatility of the bench. Great starter bench for his workshop and easily transportable all over our property. I wish the bench was a little taller but the other features of the bench more than make up for that.

    This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seems to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.

    Congrats on getting big enough that people will dislike your videos! I bet it was a purist who doesn't think maple should be stained. ;)

    Very nice. I opted to go with a butcher block style for my kitchen countertops. This video helps in what I can expect. Thanks man.

    I'm in the process of making a butcher block countertop for an island. I'm finding that my individual boards are not all the same thickness despite going through the thickness planer. I think the knots are not getting planed down thin enough and are causing issues. When putting all the boards together, there are gaps that, I think, are going to be too big to fill with glue/sawdust. Still working on this little experiment! Thanks for sharing your video.

    Not sure if you are still monitoring this vid, but how did you create tight joints on the end to end butt joints? Clamping across width seems all good, but clamping each row across length to tighten the butt joints does not seem too easy.

    Looks amazing!!! Great work man! I want to make have my island some type of wood surface, can be functional but doesn't have to be. I just love that look.

    The only thing I don't like about the finished product is the bright shine, of course this is a personal choice, I like General Finishes Flat on Flat.

    How would you install a kitchen island with an overhang? Thought about support brackets on corners but everywhere I look stares to make the holes large to allow for movement so how useful would they really be then. Want to avoid cracking/cupping of the large island. TIA!

    The other thing you can do when you make it like that is stain the various pieces different colours and then glue it up. Then it looks like different kinds of wood in the block.

    Is this stain ok and FDA approved food grade? Meaning is this ideal for food surfaces as a butcher block? I just got one from birch tree and I am trying to find products to darken it a bit to much my floor but nobody so far suggested me anything else except mineral oil.

    • @makeorbreakshop
      @makeorbreakshop  4 роки тому

      I would double check the label, most food grade stuff will list it out

    • @makeorbreakshop
      @makeorbreakshop  4 роки тому +1

      I wouldn’t sell them since the cost would be more than people would want to pay. Look at IKEA though, they have some great butcher block options

    Do you think this would hold up on a kitchen island if theres 12” overhang to sit at?

    • @makeorbreakshop
      @makeorbreakshop  4 роки тому +1

      It might but you would probably want to add some support brackets underneath just in case

    • @purchasingemail9119
      @purchasingemail9119 4 роки тому +1

      Add flat steel bar milled into underside [1/4" x 18" x 2"]

    I do this for a living and I cannot believe you purposely made your block structurally weak?! The reason Ikea blocks have multiple length segments is because the wood they use is scrap they purchase from real manufacturers. Making a Butcher Block Countertop that does not contain full length edge grain segments is extremely risky and counterintuitive to their nature by design.

    Sorry, but it's not a butcher block if its not end grain. Good looking counter top and still functional, but not at all a butcher block. And I would never, never, never stain a butcher block or any cutting board for that matter. Mineral oil and bees wax is the only thing it needs. If you want to match walnut, use walnut.

    • @makeorbreakshop
      @makeorbreakshop  5 років тому +11

      Yeh I didn't want to stain it but the client wanted it dark and not at 3 times the cost so soft maple was the best option. And for the record, the official definition of butcher block is "a block made with thick strips of usually laminated hardwood" curtesy of merriam webster...

      Wow. That is about as funny. Is this whole impeachment thing? I just love it. When people out there insist They know everything , when In reality, they have s*** for brains And really no clue at all. That is really a Kick-Ass butcher block And I always do what the customer wants. No matter if it's not my favorite or not. Keep up the good work.

      You are an idiot. Butcher Block does not have to be end grain.
      And of course you would never stain butcher block because you have probably never stained anything in your life other than your undies.
