@@SALmetalseven before losing ur head think there are 2 ways to go about this. Logicly or emotionally. Stop and think what way it will pan out for both subjects and then you will realise that logic will win. It may hurt the other person but In the long run it benefits both parties. It took me yrs to master this and now I wounder why ppl around me can't do the same.

One thing that taught me about self-control is delayed gratification, especially with things like sex, entertainment, music, indulgence of a favorite snack, watching a favorite TV show or movie, etc. Moderation is key in enjoying anything in life, and when you practice self-control you will start enjoying things even more because you deny yourself from time to time of the things you really love, gaining a deeper appreciation of them. Plus, it will prevent you from becoming addicted to things that normally are enjoyable but could potentially become harmful if you over-indulge or abuse them. Really loved the positive & peaceful vibe at the end of the video, by the way!

I recovered from 11 years of eating disorders (anorexia and bulimia) with "accidental" intermittent fasting (meaning that I didn't consider this practice as a diet or a lifestyle shift) The result was a total recovery and my relationship with both food and my body has been perfect ever since. Lately I lost appetite and haven't been eating much and the former me would have fallen into anorexic behaviours, probably followed by bulimic crises after a time. But I've been just great. I have the biggest energy and mental clarity before I actually eat my first meal of the day (I usually eat only once). This practice taught me patience, self control and self consciousness. I hope my message helps anyone who struggles with eating disorders or have terrible eating habits.

Your part about "being content with what we have while being less dependent on what we think we need" is very true.
My road bicycles I ride with are not the latest top-of-the-line machines. They are 10 and 20 years old with 10 speed gearing. Yet I consistantly leave very good riders behind or at least keep up with them and they have the latest equipment.
Same as for my running gear and shoes. Yes, my shoes are last season's colors, but I can still train comfortably and with a smile on my face and a huge smile in my heart.
    Amazing feeling.....

These words of the Stoics are very wise but like any wisdom can be problematic to implement. Why am I complaining, when a very busy guy like Marcus Aurelius, who had much on his plate, lived the Stoic life? I never lived the meditative life until now at 73 yr old. As I look back at all the wisdoms, like Henry David Thoreau's, "most men lead lives of quiet desperation,"
it is hard not see my life as a workaholic was programed into me by nature and nurture. I can talk about the rationalization of responsibility for duty, honor, family, and country but in the end it comes down to how we judge ourselves. I have finally come to a realization that the only truth each of us can achieve is that of the self and even Buddhism tells us that is, "anatta."

I wish I was less idealistic and less naive. I would have married later but wouldn't have had my beautiful daughter who has taught me what a broken heart feels like. I am glad I have the life I do as I still have a chance to learn and find meaning in creative acts.

@The Fall of New Babylon Thank you for your insight. I have found my belief grounded in evolutionary psychology and related fields which finds meaning in procreation. Beyond that, the creative acts while alive is meaningful. As far as consciousness goes I might entertain pan-psychicism. The idea of soul and spirit would take definition.

I find stoicism really hard. I can do all the external stuff. I fast regularly, take cold showers in winter, I train physically hard and I'm not attached to material wealth. However, it's the devils in the mind that I struggle with. I've been through a series of abusive relationships that really tested me. It's a constant struggle to maintain a state of calm. Sometimes I win but sometimes I lose and when I lose I go off the rails. I drink smoke and am crippled with depression, anger and rage. The rational part of my brain sees it but I'm overwhelmed by my emotions. The words of great stoics don't cut the mustard when I'm in those states. Like a storm I have to ride it out. I fear it may destroy me in the end.

I've been struggling with overwhelming emotions too and I started reading dialectical behavioural therapy workbook for the past few weeks and it's helping me understand myself and my emotions better. Try reading books and implement the methods listed as much as you can. Once you start doing the inner work, you'll see the difference in the way you react to things. And don't worry, it might not seem like it but we can do anything we set our minds to. We are stronger than we give ourselves credit.

the base of this topic starts and ends with fasting and what it does not only to your body, but your mind as well. Fasting is medicine in it's own right and takes some discipline to complete, but well worth it once you get over the initial hurdle.

  • @JamesEscobar
    @JamesEscobar 5 років тому +3

I support your views on stoicism and practice these beliefs myself. As a US Marine I have had to regularly endure up to 3 days of fasting for training and combat situations. I can confirm by the second day it fells more manageable, but in no way feels easy or blissful. Your body is constantly reminding you of your need for fuel, it hangs in the background and speaks louder at times. I also practice intermittent fasting on a daily basis because of an assortment of beliefs. Neither of these situations are simple, there is a definite difference in the way you feel properly fueling your body throughout the day and when you don't. Don't believe me, eat a sugary snack halfway through your day of fasting and notice how you feel. I have experimented with this several times to truly understand what is what in reference to fuel consumption (that is what food is). Im explaining all this because people who lecture on this topic always down play the constant difficulty with adopting this discipline. Starving your body even a little releases a myriad of chemicals telling you to stop what you are doing. You can not stop that. You can however control the urge, you can manage the discomfort and in time feel more comfortable with these sort of situations but it is never easy. There is always some sort of difficulty in forcing your body to so what it doesn't want to. I want anyone new to this to understand this so they don't feel they are not doing it right or failing in some way.

There are needs of the body often expressed in emotions & feelings
There are needs of the mind often expressed in thoughts & will
You should not ignore either but ultimately the 'YOU' must be
the arbiter. You'll find especially if you have allowed either or both
to have control at different times in your life that it's the middle
ground that's best. Don't ignore the needs of either but, don't let
either control you. But together they make you what you are
a 'human'. This is of course is easier said than done. Sometimes
    it takes a lifetime!

A cat was sent to me since the last 3-4 days ... I have food pellets I haven't fed to the dogs for sometime. So I felt more than happy to feed the cat if its comfy with this food. It was.
However, to my dismay, I see how demanding the cat is incl. attempting to bite me when I failed to feed it (meaning caught up with other chores that demanded my attention). As I sat long enough, I knew I have a limited energy for now and that has to be channeled for activities that really needs me. I thanked the cat for reminding me to let go. She has folks to feed her or adapt to what's given than demand.
Sometimes we need to be self-preserving. Enjoying my hermitage for now.

It's very simple, actually. These are instant noodles from Indomie. The flavor is 'soto'. Boil them with some Chinese vegetables and a few eggs, and it's done. I like to mix it up with white rice as well.
