I don't earn alot, I don't have friend or girlfriend. But I find the rise of mental health issue completely against my experience. Other may look down on me to be poor, no acheivement but those same people are stressed with work, stressed with debt or mortgage for their big house, car, branded goods, stressed with quarrel with significant others, some even feel life is miserable or even consider to unalive themself. Yet to me who have little, I love this life, I am in peace, I enjoyed the simple meal and occasional more expensive food. I manage to have gradually grow my saving, as I barely spend much. This life and world is beautiful for I had decided to free myself of societal expectation or other people opinion. I mainly try to practice the philosophy of Daoism, Buddhism and Stoicism.

I feel the same. I used to think there was something wrong with me, because I didnt have ambitions like other people. But I realized that in the same way that having ambitions and always want more is the mainstream thought of society, so is to have mental conflicts all the time, I see that on almost everyone I know. It was absurd to think I was living "the wrong way" if all I have in my life is peace.

I am 62 yo, physician, very successful in the eyes of society and was trying to find happiness in the world. True happiness is not in the material world. It’s within but of course you need the basic needs fulfilled. Look at the Mazlovs scale. I was a catholic before and all my friends and almost all I know are Catholic or Christian. I follow Buddhist teachings because they make me suffer less. Good luck on your path. You need a sangha or community so you’ll stay on your path

This is on point, but with a nuance. The idea is to not care and be happy with what you have. The nuance is that to be content, you need to be in a situation where you are not starving or freezing. There has to be some sense of stability to be able to be content. The stability meaning, that your basic needs are met and then you can be happy without running after anything in the luxury category.

    • @SIERRATREES

I have a friend of mine who is completely pleasure driven, a very conventional “sheep of the herd” and thinks of me as a loser just because I decided not to follow conventions and choose my own path. He pitied on me for “having bad luck” and hence choosing the path towards learning philosophy but then I tell him that I have pity towards him because he never experienced the true beauty of meaningful suffering and never ended up discovering his true self, only ending up being an addict to substances for most of his life and having a friend group who does the same.

Any extreme is bad. Not care about anything but myself is also really sad way of life. It seems to me that more and more people today follow this philosophy and I like less and less this kind of world.. I want to live in a community where everyone cares about others and I know living in community like that would make me truly happy. Making happy just yourself and do just what you want gets old pretty fast and next thing you know you feel empty inside.. If you don't have loving people or even animals around you.. All those old hermit stories are good for gaining another perspective, but I see all of them as people who developed very effective coping mechanisms that's all.. We are social animals and there is no way around that..

People, in my opinion, including myself, often tend to struggle identifying the fine line between when it's necessary to actually care and when to just let go. Stoicism definitely has useful insights in this regard. The recurring theme of non-attachment across Buddhist and Taoist scriptures seem so vital, it sometimes surprises me how these are not mandatory subjects in every school and other educational institutions.

@@chriswilliams8159 I hit the jackpot when I finally stumbled across some basic Stoicism. Practicing the simplest techniques saved my life more than once since then. The amount of control over life's toll on my emotions alone was/is like night and day. Still it's unfortunate it was well into my adult years, and out of desperation to survive overwhelming mental anguish. I'm more suspicious than surprised it's not a basic mandatory school subject. It's been my observation that narcissistic people still always try to frame it as some kind of callous form of malicious bigotry with their sick, endless fight for control to tell us what to think. I used to try to argue in good faith with them. Now I just agree with them as I back away 🪨👍

Less you care, happier you will be. Completely agree! However, I am not in control of how much I care!! I've spent years working on this, even managing 6 months or more not caring. Great. But deep down, in my subconscious and out of my control something still cares. So it is effectively suppressed... Then one day you suddenly explode, and it is so much worse than if you had actually cared all that time! The act of psudo-not-caring means that situations slowly get worse (I mean "worse" to the now festering subconscious). Now if I GENUINELY didn't care then the premise is true. But that is the trap, one isn't free to choose whether or not one truly deeply cares about something or not! To believe otherwise just stores up a world of pain, the longer you keep believing it, the worse it will be when it finally gives...

The message seems to be, to not care about things that need no caring.
Or more simply, to not create unnecessary dependencies that you could have avoided.
Like if you have friends, you would obviously care about them and how things in their life are, but don't go around buying a car just because all your friends have one and you don't need one but feel like getting one to match their standard.
Care only where it's needed, take only what you want and feel comfortable with, no more, no less.
That's my primary take, though will have to re watch it.

One can care very much and still be happy. Happiness has nothing to do with caring or not caring. It has to do with whether we are attached, possessive or not. We can experience anything; if we don't grasp, force, etc. we are happy. It is happiness without a reason. When happiness must depend on a reason for being, it is a recipe for unhappiness.

Dropping gold as usual. The more you have the more you have to worry about. What others say that is important might not be that important in reality. When you realize that nothing stops when you are gone and the world never really needed you a weight is lifted off of you. Realize that your value is within you not in what you can have. Live to treasure that with self care and positive connections. Many blessings 🙏🏾

I'll buy peace and trade my stress to others once I'm rich. I'll begin to enjoy and cherish life, I'll appreciate what I have in front of me once I'm famous and loved by all. Strangers and friends will want to be around me all the time, and I will be free to pick and choose who I call my friends. Oh, I can't wait to be someone special. I can't wait to be worshipped for all my talents and abilities. Once I'm rich and famous, then will people finally see how I see myself, special and deserving of the good life, but also better than the rest of you who aren't somebody special like me.

I'm listening to this sitting atop a hill overlooking a lake on vacant property. I took a fun trail through the woods on my cheap motorcycle to get here with a thermos of coffee and a fishing pole, I plan to sit here, breath fresh air in peace and watch these hawks soar above the field adjascent. It's a magnificent 72° afternoon after my 3-day 30 hour work week coming off a 5 day weekend. I work less than 200 days a year. I listen and think of how captured everyone else I know is. My brain needs to be fed. Being ambitious helps me focus my energy. Not for fame or glory, but to remain calm and happy. That organ needs to be used. Unlike Lie Tzu’s idea that ambition disrupts our natural state, I find it essential for keeping my mind sharp and at ease.

Life is a state of mind, like pain it’s just wat you think ..not wat you experience. In a sunlit backyard, a father and his young son engaged in a spirited game of tag. Laughter echoed through the air as they darted around the soft green grass, the father playfully pretending to chase the son, who was full of giggles and delight. They were enveloped in a world where the mundane fell away, replaced by the magic of pure, unfiltered joy.
Suddenly, in the midst of the playful chase, the father lightly swatted the child on the buttocks, a gentle tap meant to evoke laughter rather than harm. The boy squealed with laughter, unbothered by the playful thump. In that moment, the swat felt like a part of the game, a fun interaction that only added to the excitement of their play. The sensation was barely registered, overshadowed by the joy of the moment and the bond of love shared between them.
Later that day, however, the atmosphere shifted. The child, drawn by the bright wrappers of candy on the kitchen counter, felt a surge of excitement. In a moment of temptation, he reached out for a treat he had been told not to touch. Just as he grasped the candy, his father appeared, stern and authoritative.
“Not that one!” the father exclaimed, and in a swift response, he delivered a quick but firm smack to the child’s bottom. This time, the sensation was entirely different. The boy’s eyes widened, not with surprise, but with fear and guilt. The same force applied, yet this time it registered deeply; the joy of the earlier encounter had vanished, replaced by feelings of shame and disobedience.
As he sat on the floor, tears welled in his eyes. The pain felt sharper, more pronounced. The blow had not only physical weight but also carried emotional consequences that made it resonate more profoundly. The child’s mind raced, linking the sensation of pain with disappointment and fear of his father’s displeasure.
That evening, as the father held his son in his lap and comforted him, he gently explained the differences between their playful interactions and the disciplinary moments. “You see, my dear,” he said softly, “how you feel about something changes what it feels like. When we laugh and play, even if it’s a little hard, it doesn’t hurt as much because we are enjoying it together. But when we feel scared or guilty, even a gentle touch can feel much worse.”
In that exchange, the little boy began to grasp a profound truth. Pain, he realized, was not just about the physical sensation but stretched into the realm of context and feeling. It was an illusion, shaped by his emotions and the situations around him. With this newfound understanding, he snuggled deeper into his father’s embrace, feeling safe and loved, ready to embrace the lessons that life would inevitably present-knowing now that pain could change under the lens of perception.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the backyard, the child smiled through his tears, grateful not only for the playful moments but also for the challenging ones, realizing that both were essential parts of the dance of life.
