The writings of the ancient Taoists persuade us to go in a different direction: we ought to let go of existing concepts and worldviews, become aware of emptiness, let nature take its course, and move with nature rather than against it. The goal? An easier life, less worrying… following Tao, the universal principle. This video explores ancient Taoist ideas that may serve as antidotes for reducing worry in a world out of control.

I just think it's over generalized. Maybe the present is stressful and hence becomes a traumatic past, which leads to an anxious future. Unable to unwind and make the best of the present makes it worse. But life is more complicated than that, because being human, you only have some tools or none. Sometimes being human is being broken and still hopeful.

I have no idea how taoism did this, but it truly helped me with my anxiety. I've always been a control freak, always believed I could have all of my life in control. Obviously it never happened and I lived with insane anxiety. I could not accept the fact that there were things out of my control, I was too anxious and afraid to make peace with it. Then, I discovered taoism and somehow it just clicked. I understood it and made peace with the uncontrollable and unknown. Of course I am a work in progress, but anxiety doesn't have me in a chokehold anymore. I'm relieved I can't control everything.

@@parulsharma3396 Hi! I would not say I cured my anxiety, I still get anxious and overthink things, but I realized that I was obsessed over getting only one certain outcome. I thought that this specific outcome is the only future I want and the only future that will make me happy. Instead I let go of that outcome and learned - through taoism - that something else can happen to me in the future (through natural course of nature) and it might be COMPLETELY different from what I initially wanted, but just as good or even better. I also learned to live right now instead of in the future and enjoy the happiness now, instead of waiting for the ''perfect happiness'' somewhere in the unknown future. I remind myself these things when I get anxious and it works very well.

But then you have to wait till it grows apples on it's own. You need to take care of the tree at first, but you still have to wait till it starts growing apples naturally, you can't force it.

People think too much and often lack the ability to stay in the living moment because they tend to be obsessed with obtaining favourable outcomes and maintaining control. Swimming is a decent analogy to explain how to work with the conditions you're met with because water is very powerful and can be an ally if you literally 'go with the flow' and use your body correctly to glide smoothly through water as opposed to splashing around wrecklessly. Nobody fights water and wins. Also you need to let go and stopping flailing in order to float.

Antidote 1. I learned it when I was young. That's how I knew just let things be. 2. Learned it in my teen years, lol! I stopped chasing after happiness and fulfilment and began enjoying the present moment. That special moment when I realized just how lucky I was to be there, drinking tea in the morning and playing with my dog. 3. Never liked being congratulated or praised. It feels empty and shallow. Why would you praise an action, when you don't know what it took for me to get there? I rather praise myself whether I make it or don't make it. Small wins and big wins have to be celebrated with yourself or with the people you trust. Antidote 4. Beautifully well-explained! Thank you! 5. Fate cannot be controlled. If the rain comes along, it might bring disaster or a blessing in disguise. It is how you decide to react afterwards and make the most of it. Believe me, I would know when I was jobless and w/o financial help. In the hospital, all I could think of was "What comes it will come. First I'm gonna make sure I get better. Then slowly build things back up." Life happens and when a door closes, another door opens. Another chapter begins... and you restart.

What often makes it difficult is having to be in a society that doesn't even try, and are just tugged around by desires...Co-workers, neighbors, friends, family, and strangers alike. I think that's why many of these old practitioners who taught this stuff left society to live separately from it. Easier to do when one isn't constantly surrounded by the crap of other people who don't even have similar ideas of letting go of the rat race. I started rigging every possible and anxious action with the sky pulling me up, and throwing me across the world, as in experimenting an other-wordly experience. I was afraid of going outside, I still am to this day. But this video, and the story itself, made me question wether my fears were being validated, and they were. If it's something that can happen, well, it'll happen, and don't worry about it, because, whether or not you like it, it's going to happen. There was a morning when I woke up standing upright in the middle of my living room during a 7.2 earthquake with the epicenter about 10 miles away. I had run in my sleep during an earthquake. Only running could account for the bruise on my leg. I had made 2 turns of 90 degrees each and then one 180 degree turn BEFORE waking up! It is a wonder I did not get out into traffic sleep walking!
That is how I learned I did not belong in earthquake territory.
Your terror is knowing that hurricanes will keep coming even as you get older and older.
In the meantime, Biden and States like California will help you. California has $97,000,000,000 excess in their budget this year.
People are divided over politics, but you have not been abandoned by the nation.

And the psychologist works 60 hours a week in disasters like yours. FEMA maintains phone help lines. Call my friends and their co-workers at FEMA. They want you to do so! Tell them your troubles. I don't know if this align or not with taoism, but when I'm about to do something, I always try to have a dual mentality: expecting everything AND nothing at the same time. That means, for example, if I want to publish a book, I will in both positive and negative possibilities about the result: it's a good idea to have faith in your project, and believe it will be alright, but it's also a good idea to be prepared if said project result in failure, thus you will be happy if it succeed, and if it fails, you will either accept it calmly and move to the next project, or restart it again from zero. It recaps a lot of what I've heard people like Alan Watts, for example, talk about, but it's way more concise.
The longer I've lived, the more I've grown to appreciate that it's not such a case of discovering ideas, it's new, or every new generation re-discovering old but effective ideas.
I'm often left wondering what life would have been if I'd been given these ideas as a child.
But then a part of me retorts "maybe if your life hadn't been so arduous, you may not have grown to appreciate the value of things such as these."

I recently saw a video that informed me about how kids arent taught about atoms in young age because a fellow from Freud's era thought they cant learn those things... The video was about how calories are built and processed, and vanish from body by exhale. We know all needed, but information has been hold for various reasons from people. Human errors.

@@hannajarvenpaa5079 well; as a matter of fact I can confirm that little people can learn Atomic science. My daughter who turned 18 today learned the periodic table to the first 30 elements when she was 5 years old.
It was quite a process getting it into her head but when she went to school with it the teachers made her stand at the assembly and recite it. Obviously she excells at Chemistry now. I wanted to teach her the ABCs of Chemistry because I felt it was a fundamental understanding of things lacking in people. So; yes they can, but theirs a trick to teaching little people this.

Thank you, I genuinely thank you for this info. This following text is an experiment I’ll be doing with myself:
I often felt like there was something missing to my genuine calmness and these philosophies you introduced may help me finally find that answer. See, I’m an aspiring illustrator and digital artist and I really value my capabilities as such, art is what I love most in my life and I have always valued this ability over anything. There was this situation where I was doing some deep talk with a close friend of mine (considering the fact that we were both high af), and I started to think to myself for the first time ever about the possibility of living without all of these god-given talents, the wealth I was born with and the praise I received from everyone. This praise is not just about my art, but it includes my social skills, the way I dress, the way I look and was born like. I’ve always given these aspects an inmensurable amount of importance (and I still do), and going back to my conversation with my friend, at that moment I came up with a feeling I found hard to explain at that exact moment. This feeling was all about living without all of these aspects I gave such importance, how would my life be without all of these praises and distinctions I was always chasing for? Well, the ultimate answer was emptiness, although at that moment it didn’t come to me as a single word, but the feeling was clearly of emptiness and how being okay with that would be a nice experiment to go through. Everything I was chasing (and don’t get me wrong, I’ll keep chasing some of these things to the end of the world because I absolutely desire to turn into a great artist) was so void of sense, all it did was cause me anxiety and insecurities. Keep in mind that I’m diagnosed with severe anxiety disorder and many times I’ve struggled with terrible depression states, and these behaviors previously mentioned do nothing but propague this stress. I’m always looking to be perfect to everyone else’s eyes, and to achieve that, I need to take extreme care of my looks. By taking this extreme care, it feels like I’m always caring less about myself, ironically.
Okay, I have this tendency that roots me out of the main point. The main point is that being okay with emptiness means being okay with myself in my emptiest state. If I don’t have anything, then nobody is interested in what I have to offer. That leaves me alone with myself, as I said, and void of any sort of attributed merit. This state, being okay with what I just said, might be the key for some nice calmness and happiness. I’m delving deeper into these philosophies, and I’ll experiment with them. Wish y’all the best and thanks for reading :)

I am so happy for us all that these videos ease our anxiety. After you have your respite, make sure you charge back into the breach. We need every kind-hearted, good-minded person in this world doing what they can to help. Even if it's just checking on a neighbor, or meeting a neighbor that is lonelier and more anxious than you and you don't know it, easing their burdens is equally meaningful and important.
Yes, despite what is presented in (some of) these "nothing is in control and it's OK" videos, it is still good to have responsibility, to hold yourself to account, to care, to work through our problems and try to treat others better. I think these kinds of philosophies are too focused on the self in a world where people are suffering way too much, and while so many are simply apathetic or participating in cruelty. I think it's a cop-out from feeling agency in our lives. We SHOULD feel bad (from time-to-time), but more importantly, we should try to do something about it.
I don't accept that just because we can't control things in our lives as a single person that we should just live in some state of contentment. Anxiety is a defense mechanism. It kept me alive as a firefighter. It warns us. It keeps us from becoming complacent and from turning a blind eye to wrongs in our world, and real, honest threats. Justice matters. Your country's, and your neighbor's well-being matters. Your country's well-being IS your neighbor's well-being no matter their political views - it's not just about the fake Nationalistic pride we see worldwide or anything like that, it's about doing what is right for your community. It's not out of your control to make your neighbor's lives better especially when you can't see a way to improve your own. Saying hello and checking in might be all you have to do. You don't need money, or control in your life for that.
Good to touch back on these thoughts of Taoism to not be completely absorbed and consumed by anxiety and materialistic pursuits (stuff like wealth is transitory in the first place, and to most people on Earth, it's relatively unattainable), but to think we are anywhere near a world where we shouldn't focus absolutely on productivity and progress is an old idea from a simpler world that hadn't encountered bad actors on a global scale with nuclear weapons pointed like a Mexican standoff. It's up to all of us to encourage fellowship, progress and kindness in the face of all that.
I love the heart of Taoism, and I long for a world where we can all live in peace, and live without the fear of the destruction of our future generations, but we are not close to that yet. It's going the opposite way. Be content, but always be vigilant.
