I don't think it's wrong to want something but I think it's essential that your expectations are realistic and based on how much you can achieve with your own skill set. You have to accept your shortcomings and learn to limit your desires to your own abilities. That way you will never be disappointed.

When Covid and lockdowns started, I started learning about Stoicism, and I have to say, it has changed my life forever! A lot of positive things started happening over time! I recommend to everyone reading this to at least give it a try, as you have nothing to lose! However, it takes time to change our ways, so we must take it seriously and let it sink in over time. Only then we may start changing for the better and start seeing the world with different eyes.
"Instead of hoping for a life free of misfortune, it's better to wish ourselves the fortitude to handle adversity." Then isn't it better to do what's up to you--like a free man--than to be passively controlled by what isn't, like a slave or beggar?" Marcus Aurelius These quotes remind me of a passage in Steps to Knowledge by Marshall Vian Summers about suffering and blame. Here is an excerpt: "Pain is always a decision that you make in response to any stimuli in your environment. The body will have physical pain if it is so stimulated, but that is merely a sensory response. It is not the true pain that hurts you. The pain that hurts you is the crown of thorns of your own ideas and assumptions, your own misgivings and misinformation and your own unforgiveness towards yourself and the world.... You may feel that you have been wronged by another or by the world... This, however, is not how Knowledge views you, and you must learn not to view yourself in this way... Without condemnation upon the world and upon yourself, the mind is at peace already." (Marshall Vian Summers, Steps to Knowledge)
True! As Jordan Peterson said Pursue 'Meaning of Life'......rather than 'Happiness in Life'. The reason being 'happiness'.. is also fading just as sadness. You can be happy in the morning but sad in the noon and happy in evening and again become sad in the night. The circumstances in life directly dictates the happiness variables. Therefore focusing only on being happy as the only absolute goal robs us away from living a 'fulfilled' life. Live a meaningful life by accepting death and sickness as the very basis of our fragile life, happiness to be enjoyed every time as it doesn't last, sadness with grace as there will be sunlight tomorrow, challanges and adversities to be faced with an understanding that it is profound structure that makes our life of what it is and the very meaning of our existence. Despite all this life fragility, yet still offering our most responsible contribution to the family and society will help us to live a meaningful life in its highest order because we know that sufferings and happiness, both makes up the very 'meaning of life'. So, pursuing the meaning of life and not just happiness......will make us live a more 'Fullfilling life'.
I’ve never agreed with 4 words so much. Desire is a form of attachment So find a way to let go of it and you will get what you wanted. That’s how the universe tends to work.
Go with the flow & you’ll be alright. No matter what happens, embrace your fate with calm & inner peace. Struggling needlessly makes no logical sense. In other words, do the exact opposite of what our toxic, self-destructive & shallow modern society tells us to do. Be a true sigma human & forge your own path. 🐺

And it's a pretty ugly thing to see. Glad I'm some kind of chameleon for situations. I'll always find a way. And that's a great gift from the universe and my own spirit. ❤️
I'm so grateful for this reminder. I often struggle with acceptance because of a driving force to change what I consider is wrong. Then beat myself up for it! It helps to understand and accept that it's all a process. Won't get it right the first couple of times. Keep doing it anyways.
What I get from this video is that I should change the way I pray. I should pray for acceptance, strength and courage to face adversity instead of praying that it shouldn't happen to me because no life is perfect. I should let go of my wants and desires and be grateful to what I already have and just let the universe do what it supposed to do with me. Let things happen, happen.
I started putting this concept in place about a week ago. I stopped buying self-help books ever since I learned not to expect my environment to provide answers for me. This video is really about what reality is and why, at a basic level, it is the same for everyone. The one who understands that the future is just our attempt to predict events based on a bunch of similar events lived, is not upset when his prediction does not come true, because he knew that the percentage there is less than 30. A person who understands that mistakes are a great opportunity to learn something and that understanding how bad you are is only an indicator of control over the situation, is not afraid to make mistakes. A person who understands how the process of the formation of the psyche takes place does not get angry at people who just live their lives. The first thing a psychologist does when you come to a session is trying to fix your psyche. Second, he is trying to teach you about your psyche so that you can fix it yourself. Simply understanding a thing opens up every way for you to interact with it, which is far more than anyone else is willing to give you.
I think we need to distinguish what we NEED from what we WANT. We can accept not having what we want, but we can never accept not having what we need and I don't think we'll ever be happy or satisfied without it. I have let go of professional or financial ambitions and I feel better for it, I have let go of dreams of a happy marriage and children and I'm at peace. But I would never be happy or whole being completely isolated, without feeling love and care from others. That's a need. Needs need to be fulfilled. That's what I think.
I also wonder sometimes how much finding contentment in letting go of professional, financial or personal ambitions is actually holding us back - allowing us to feel okay settling for less than we want when actually sometimes it is good to embrace wants and needs, it is good to strive for something, it is good to have goals - even if we might never reach them. Finding joy in the pursuit no matter the outcome seems more healthy to me than finding joy in giving up the pursuit.
@@RaeganSealy Yes! That is what I meant by fulfilling your needs. There are universal needs, of course (food, shelter), but there are also individual needs that vary from one person to the next. For some it will be professional ambitions, for others a family. We shouldn't try to let these go because that will simply make us unhappy. We should fulfill them to find wholeness. But you are right, trying does not mean succeeding, so fulfillment should be in the journey and not the outcome!

And the tiny region in which it all takes place. The whole earth a point in space - and most of it uninhabited.
We must learn how to cope life with the basics like food shelter medicine and clothing in a minimal manner from our childhood. Then we must be taught that even if we earn those in enormous amounts we have to leave those behind us one day and therefore never indulged luxuries.Thats because the more you indulge the you feel miserable at the end like a vicious circle. Thanks, and ordered your book....Had to comment again on your words to live by, 3 months later. Watching relationship videos forces us to aware of our foibles. Marriage coaches encounter these repetitive reactions amongst men and women's relationships,, to the point where they do not hear themselves, nor the other one. We go back to growing our Stoic principles, gather strength, and approach issues with new eyes. This tool definitely helps take us our of the constant negative cycle. The all too painful relationships we trash, regret, and eventually grow over, teach us as we mature, to hold our tongue when triggered, not easy, but to consider not throwing away that which is good and pure. Stoicism is one of those philosophies that anyone, regardless of their religious, political or philosophical views, should take certain aspects of.!!
I don't think it's wrong to want something but I think it's essential that your expectations are realistic and based on how much you can achieve with your own skill set. You have to accept your shortcomings and learn to limit your desires to your own abilities. That way you will never be disappointed.
The courage to accept the behaviors and events that we don't want to happen propels us to move forward in a better way.

For me, it’s imperative to have a little reminder from Marcus Aurelius every now and then. It keeps me in the present. Excellent job, and thank you!
I've been exposed to a lot of philosophies by many philosophers but Marcus Aurelius' words simply seem the most righteous and relatable to me.
"Instead of hoping for a life free of misfortune, it's better to wish ourselves the fortitude to handle adversity." Then isn't it better to do what's up to you--like a free man--than to be passively controlled by what isn't, like a slave or beggar?" Marcus Aurelius
These quotes remind me of a passage in Steps to Knowledge by Marshall Vian Summers about suffering and blame. Here is an excerpt:
"Pain is always a decision that you make in response to any stimuli in your environment.
You can be happy in the morning but sad in the noon and happy in evening and again become sad in the
night.
I needed this today thank you
Thank you, Janice.

"Full acceptance itself is a rational decision"
That hits incredibly hard. That's something that makes humans human.
A calm mind is a strong mind
It's not really a want, it's more of a need, the need to escape somewhere of my own where peace of mind is
I think we need to distinguish what we NEED from what we WANT.

I continue to look for those stories which include a real healing component, as there is too much inherent evil when relationships run awry. Men and women have a terrific capacity for reconciliation. Thanks for your channel, Einzelganger. And, those who provide feedback from a position of growth and awareness, are proof of positive healing-change.

You are like a child where you forbid your friend from eating pickles because you do not like pickles yourself. You have not learned how to tell you desires apart from the desires of the universe as a whole. Not all pieces of the universe (not all people) want the same thing. You use the word "must" a lot. I think that you somtimes *want* to eat a certain kind of food for dinner. But it is not the case that we *must* eat a certain kind of food for dinner. This extends to politics and other things. Are you so afraid to say that you *want* somthing that you hide it with words like "must," "should", etc...?
