Seneca | Why Worry About What Isn't Real? (Stoicism)

  • In a letter to his dear friend Lucilius, Stoic philosopher Seneca wrote: “There are more things, Lucilius, likely to frighten us than there are to crush us; we suffer more often in imagination than in reality.”
Chronic worriers tend to be more occupied by the future than by present circumstances. During the day, and even during the night, their thoughts wander in the mysterious realm of what’s yet to come, plotting, planning, and calculating on how to tackle an unfortunate fate that might rear its ugly head.
But even though they wish to control the future, they’ve never gone beyond the confines of the present. This is because the future doesn’t exist, except in our minds. We can’t live in the future, and we can’t predict it. Sure, we can plan for things that might come, but the present usually unfolds in different and often surprising ways.
Still, many of us fix our attention on the unknown and fantasize endlessly about how things that we can’t possibly predict will present themselves to us. Seneca observed this phenomenon in his friend Lucilius as well as in the people around him. He counterattacked this often tiresome and destructive stance towards the illusory domain of the future with Stoic reasoning, explaining why worrying about it is pointless, and advising us on what to do instead.
This video (Why Worry About What Isn't Real? | Seneca's Philosophy to End Worrying) explores Seneca’s antidotes to worry and groundless fears.

When I'm worrying incessantly at night, I imagine turning the light on in my room. It's simple and somehow has the power to change everything. It fills me with light and hope. And makes me feel a little silly for having, just moments before, dug into that cave of darkness so deeply. Another thing to do is to breathe in, count to 4, hold your breath for a count of 7, exhale for a count of 8. Do this about 4 or 5 times and you will realize that you have lost that focus on worrying about a particular thing. You might even be able to get back to sleep!

Something I realised today. I am so good at acting happy. Whenever I see someone I know I immediately act so bubbly and turn on a big smile. It's so automatic. Secretly I'm mostly sad and filled with dread. That's why socialising is so exhausting for me. And maybe the reason I don't have many friends is because people can sense I'm not genuine.

This is why I don't make so many plans in life, just save money, and live a simple life. With this, maybe it will allow me to adapt to any situation that tomorrow will throw at me and be flexible for options I might choose to change the path I will walk in life. Fewer worries, no stress, free from anxiety, more time for self and family. Thanks for this additional wisdom sir... =)

The problem is that most people fear what hurt them most, i.e., "I don't ever want that to happen to me again." But its not a conscious thing and most people absolutely don't want to talk about the thing that hurt them most in their life. So its not so simple as choosing to live in the present

My parents used to have a little poster on their wall when I was growing up:
“There are only two things to worry about-
Either you are well or you are sick.
If you are well, there is nothing to worry about,
But if you are sick, there are only two things to worry about-
Either you will get well or you will die.
If you get well, there is nothing to worry about,
But if you die, there are only two things to worry about-
Either you will go to heaven or hell.
If you go to heaven, there is nothing to worry about.
And if you go to hell, you’ll be so damn busy shaking hands with friends,
you won’t have time to worry!”

It was such a lightbulb moment to realise that almost every single one of my insecurities and worries comes from illusions, fantasies about the future that I have made up in my head. I tell myself that there is evidence for these illusions, but when I really analyse it, there is really no evidence for it at all. In pretty much every case, there is actually overwhelming evidence for the opposite - I am good, I am enough, I am loved. Things will probably be ok.
Unfortunately, realising something and really feeling it, are two separate things XD

    •  3 роки тому +10

Exactly my experience. But it takes a lot of discipline to tame the mind. It tends to produce fantasies on the assembly line, so if we're unaware we're so easily dragged along.

I believe we worry because there is still a root problem to solve or analyze within our thoughts. I've spent a lot of time in worry and with anxiety over the last few years and I've realized its okay to "worry" because we worry when there is still something yet to complete, and deep in our mind we sense the problem overwhelmingly but its still in a haze. Open that conversation with yourself find solutions where you can, spend time overlooking all possibilities to find where the worry stems from, then return to the present moment. Allow yourself to worry in meditation or focused thought then find a way back to the present. I have realized that worry and anxiety may be misunderstood and are sort of a human superpower that helps pave the way to a better future. We must pay attention to those warnings and filter out the fear to see the solution. We worry when we're not ready, prepare yourself to be ready and the worry will fade and the present will become clearer. In that sense i can agree and disagree with this outlook of worry.

I tend to obsess over it but in reality nothing bad every really happens, our minds habit of catastrophizing any event is what causes the suffering but in reality things are not at all that bad. In fact they are quite good! Stay in the moment, enjoy it's fruits. don't worry about the future.

I understand the message in this video and that there is no point in worrying endlessly about the future. The present and what you do in the present are all that matters. However, we should never neglect or not speculate about the future. If we do, we miss out on BIG opportunities.
To stay proactive and to make decisions today that will ensure a better future is the way to go. For example, so many jobs have and still are becoming victims of digitalization and automation. Thus, if you're a smart and future-oriented individual, you will rather go for a job like a System developer that is and will be high in demand rather than working as a Shop worker or an Accountant that will simply disappear.
You see, as long as you plan and are constantly prepared for the future, you have really nothing to worry about. But if you just stay mindlessly in the present without any sense of direction, you are bound to fail eventually and then you'll really start worrying. Nobody knows the future for sure, but there are always trends in society that gives us a good indicator of how things are going to be, like the green shift we are now seeing.

    • @MindNow
      @MindNow 3 роки тому +1

I think you misunderstand the concept. Being in the present does NOT mean that u shouldn’t plan for the future. Even when u plan for the future, you are doing that in the NOW, therefore u r in the present. But ruminating on the future that causes suffering, that is the point.
