Love my A. hentzi. She’s always out in sight and at night you can watch her re-arranging her enclosure. One of the most underrated T’s in my opinion.
Right? I have 2 and they're so active. I think they're absolutely beautiful. Watching them bulldoze their enclosure is awesome.
same! honestly i think they are soo pretty, idk who thinks they're ugly but they're wrong. 😁 i loveee the tan and dark brown colorway. mine actually molted and turned pitch black after being holed up for a couple months. 🔥 one of my favs for sure
Native Texan here, work night shifts and i see males wandering around all the time. It's so cool to see them strolling around in the wild. I rescued one from the clutches of a cat and have it at home rehabilitating. Thanks for providing such easy to follow and helpful videos.
This is my favorite species of T! So underrated.
I got a A. Hentzi because when I saw a picture of it and the common name "Texas Brown" reminded me of an old western film, so I bought a female and named her Sheriff. Yeah, a bulldozer is about the most accurate description.
Aww I have such a soft spot for the "ugly" brown terrestrials! My A. hentzi is the most docile in my collection, and has a gorgeous metallic gold carapace. Hentzis are just "Great Value" Phormictopus auratus lol.
I miss my a.hentzi! 😔 He matured last year & passed away in February/March this year! He was such an awesome 2nd Tarantula, loved him & his character way too much!
Thank you for your videos Richard! You make my Tuesdays, husbandry is such a rewarding hobby. I have a Arizona blonde I saved from a farmers market, They wanted to spray or crush him so I put him in my hat and I've had him for a couple months now. Mellow and very easy to handle. I adore him.youre videos really help me out.
Poor little guy, good thing you saved him.
The only tarantula I've come in contact with in the wild are these sweeties. One year a male came into our home in fall, right before a cold snap. We kept him until spring and released him again to go look for ladies. Fabulous tarantula, quite docile.
I received one of these for my birthday several years ago and as you said, they're not the most attractive species so I wasn't terribly enthusiastic about it. But of all the tarantulas I've had, it was the most quirky, interesting one to watch. When I first got it it immediately closed up the opening of its coconut shell hide and I thought well there we go - another pet hole, I'll never see it's little ugly butt anyway. But this little weirdo promptly burrowed out from under the hide into the space formed between the back of the shell and corner of the cage and I spent all day watching this guy build itself a back porch. It would lay web down over the substrate then literally roll up the web covered substrate into balls and carry it up to the top of the shell and stick it to the sides of the cage and the hide until it had built a full roof over the hollow it has created behind it's hide. In my almost 10 years of keeping tarantulas, the Texas brown was by far the strangest and most interesting one I've had the pleasure of keeping.
Moral of the story - don't sell your ugly ducklings short, you may find them becoming a favorite in spite of yourself 🤣
So funny to hear you giggle when you called him the ugly duckling. I think the copper color is beautiful though🙂
I dunno, I think it's a pretty good-lookin' T. Then again, in my humble opinion, there's no such thing as an ugly one lol.
Love our Brownie. She was my first large tarantula to aquire and crawl into my hand. People say brown is boring, but I find her very beautiful.
Since I do live in Northern Texas, once on a camping trip when I was little we saw a Texas brown T! We took it home and we fed it and gave it water. Sadly since it was most likely already a mature male during mating season he passed a few weeks later.
I’m glad you were able to make him comfortable during his passing. The males just don’t live long enough :(
Texas brown was my first tarantula. And I'm glad it was my first to understand the basics of how to care for a tarantula.
I live about 8 miles north of the OK border and see these pretty consistently. I have had several instances of being scared to death by a shed when working in my garden. I've kept several when I've found spiderlings - they are so calm - never bolt, threaten or try to escape. Just hangs out and sits on the top of their cork bark. Great basic T.
My second tarantula is a wild caught Texas brown named Lily, she is just like an eight legged kitten, she is definitely the easiest going spider I've ever met. My Haitian brown birdeater molted today and she is MASSIVE. She's even a little bit larger than my rose hair.
These are all over my yard here in texas lol
Aphonopelma Hentzi lovers unite!!!!!!! I actually think their rich brown color is very beautiful🕷😌
I’ve wanted one of these Ts for a while and finally got one for me and my man’s 2 year anniversary (ladies get yourself a man who loves tarantulas as much as you do 😂). She’s a beautiful Mocha color and SO DOCILE! Very curious girl and loves to explore. Very underrated tarantula ❤️
My mom caught one for me down in Marfa Texas. During mating season. I named her Marfa. Just so we didn’t forget the memory of when we got her. Just handled her for the first time (we got her a month ago.) today. He wasn’t joking about them being docile! But shes very quick. My first tarantula! I plan to keep more!
I live in Texas. When I moved into my late grandma's house summer of last year my mom moved a shelf that had been on the ground in the back room and underneath was a big one of these Ts, most likely a male looking for a mate. We have no experience with Ts so we just put the shelf down gently and left it there; it was totally chill the whole time and left when we weren't looking.
Now this past weekend I bought my first T slings(a GBB and Mexican Red Knee) at my first big exotic pet expo but was very tempted by one of the Texas Browns a vendor had. Now I wish I'd bought one! They may only be brown but lucky for me that's my favorite color and I think these Ts look quite fetching regardless. Maybe next time.
"My Ugly-Duckling Tarantula...."
Ugggg... Rude.... These guys are Classic Looking! Kinda like an Old-old Ford Truck!! Lol
I just picked up my very first tarantula this past Sunday and chose an A. hentzi 💗
Native Texan here with a big thank you!
I got an A. Hentzi a little while ago from my biology teacher. A parent had brought it to her after finding it in her yard. My teacher didn't know how to care for it so I volunteered to take it. Your video really helped me on what I needed and what I didn't. I've had him for about three months now and it's been great! I'm pretty sure it's male due to his size and the time he was found. I'm not sure about age though. He's been great though! Always eager to eat and is always out and about.
I remember as a kid watching these crawl along my uncle's ranch property in Austin County, Texas. A beautiful and seemingly autonomous species indeed
I was just gifted an A. hentzi sling. Looking forward to watching it grow over the years.
My wife has finally done it. About a year ago I bought her a curly hair tarantula as a sling for a gift because she kept telling me every time we went to the pet store about how she wanted one and knew all about them. I don't fear spiders but I never really felt the need to keep them as pets. Even still because of this tiny little spider and this channel I have fallen in love with them and will now be adding either a Texas brown and Arizona blonde to our small pet collection. Thank you for all the informative videos and thank you for the addition of new amazing pets into my home as a result of this information
I got my first t yesterday, a costa rican zebra, she is gorgeous!
I also got one yesterday. She’s my second T
NICE DUDE CONGRATS!
I love her to death shes very very calm, her feeding response is incredible as well
I don’t know why my orange baboon is so calm when it’s supposed to be the opposite
How is she
I just picked up one of these this morning. Definitely the most mild mannered T in my collection and a great display species
I don't think they're ugly. I used to see them all the time when I was in Texas. I just ordered one.
I got mine for $10 on Craigslist with a little setup. He recently molted and looks beautiful.
My full grown female Hentzi pretty much gave up on tunnel burrowing once the substrate dried out, still doing fine though. She'll make little dugouts all around the enclosure at night so it went from looking like a completely level layer of coco bedding to what looks like a field of artillery shelling of a WW1 battlefield, never boring to wake up to and inspect.
Very easy T. I’ve had mine since she was a little sling being dragged by a tarantula hawk, now she’s about 7 years old. Learned some new things thanks!
My Hentzi is awesome and her hair turns red in the light. She just molted and i confirmed female a few weeks after purchasing her. I also have the Chalchodes but i def love my hentzi more. She was my 3rd tarantula.
I know this video is a year old but I just caught one of these in my backyard and wanted to know how to take care of it. Thanks for the info, but I don't think they're ugly at all. I find them to be every bit incredible as any other species!
Great species. Slow growing but mild mannered. Got me started.
Found one in my carport today under some plywood, about 1.5”. Unfortunately the larger ones we have around here fall victim to the stray cats or the turantula hawks. Guess We’ll have to keep him around.
Great video as usual Richard !!!
I used to have access to a ranch in central TX and found these guys in the wild all the time. So blessed to have actually done that.
I got one of these as a freebie with my C.Elegans so I’m very happy to see a video on this guy!
Aww, they aren't boring...they're cute and fluffy
A great video ... a wonderful species for any collector, I only wish we could import them here to Australia.
Hey Dean. Is there any legal Tarantula. I am actually a kiwi who moved to Canada 10 years ago. I have 10 Tarantulas currently, both New and Old World
@@reganparker8775 There are about 4, possibly 5 here that you can keep as pets. I have a Coremiocnemis tropix, Queensland Rainforest tarantula, not the biggest growing but are very easy to look after.
@@deanmeixner How are their temperament?
Dean Meixner another reason I reconsidered moving there. Too many stupid laws.
Great video Richard I have one of these in my tiny collection lol.
Hey, they are also in Louisiana. Actually they're the only species of tarantulas found in Louisiana.
It was my first T, in New Mexico. Wild caught and started me into the hobby. Great species, docile and beautiful. Currently raising a sling and its very slow going.
You made my day! Can tell by the glass reflection how much effort u put in filming~ love it! Sincerely hoping for a H.mac husbandry 😭
First ever tarantula I saw in real life when I was about ten (I grew up in Missouri and my aunt lived on an old farm out in the middle of nowhere). I was both scared and amazed. I now know it was a juvenile, as it was not very big but was indeed a tarantula. It actually looked quite a bit like your juvies. I actually find them quite pretty to look at.
I absolutely Love how you display your T's! That Old mix-match Wood looks awesome. No matter the species!
I just got this species as my first T yesterday, so far you seem spot on the mark about its temperament!
Great video man!! 🤘🤘🤘
I've been considering this species... thank you very much for making this video. I think it would make a great first tarantula.
I just got one and I can’t wait. Also I think they are beautiful.
This really helps! I just got two of em
LOVE THE START OF THE VID! LOLZ! Cheers Richard!
I had to cut it before I started cussing.
Watched most of your videos Richard and really enjoying your info,,, a good help to my collection of T's, cheers mate,,🏴 🇬🇧...
Great video Richard.. henzi was my first tarantula called rosie love this one mate 👍👍👍
finaly .... my personal number 1 ..... *thumbsup*
Been patiently waiting lol 🤘
Hey Richard great video. Paladin Exotics did the same thing to me. Gave me a Texas Brown as a freebie. It must not be a good seller. I purchased a Brachypelma hamorii, Aphonopelma Seemani. Aphonopelma Chalcodes. Acanthoscurria Geniculata, Chromatopelma Cyaneopubescens, and my first old world species a Harpactira Pulchripes. Just a sling but doesn't seem to be any different than my other new world species. A lot quicker to eat my fruit flies than some of my other slings and moves quicker but doesn't seem to really consider me any kind of a threat. Thanks for this video again!
I honestly love your videos, the way you format everything, the crystal clear footage and the fact that you deep dive into specific species! Ages ago I requested texas brown. 😄 I actually watch back your videos and I see how you pronounce the scientific names. X
Glad I was able to cover it for you, sorry it took so long...there are so many topics I want to cover and just dont have time to make more than one video a week right now. It is almost like a second full time job. I have video topics laid out on my calendar and have ideas to carry me well into 2022..lol.
Just picked up my first captive-bread Tx Brown! Hoping for a female! Seriously underrated T!
Thank you for this! My spider guy has some of these and I was pondering getting one, now I'm positive I want one. I honestly believe they are prettier than the blonde 😉 hopefully I find one in the wild here in Missouri someday
My A hentzi is so interesting. She burrowed for months this winter and then came out and molted out in the open. She’s lovely, very chill.
found one of these in my Garage, and put it up in my neighborhood app to make sure it was not someone's pet. If no one claims'em I'm gonna go ahead and keep'em as a pet, thank you for the informative video. I do live in south Texas so it's more than likely just a wild one that ended up in my Garage, but just in case I'll give my neighbors a chance to claim him.
Here we go again. Keep it up.
i just got my little girl from murray (pladin), and i couldnt be happier with her, shes so sweet
Awesome video dude
Great video! Very nice looking speicies
I think the Texas tarantula is beautiful and active, would not mind having one someday.
I now have a versacolor, a pumkin patch large and a curly hair.
You have helped me so much on there care thank you. God Bless and see you next time.
I just think every tarantula is pretty. ❤🕷
I literally just bought a few tarantulas from Paladin Exotics.. including an A. hentzi..
I was only looking to make sure I had a proper enclosure set up, I didn't think it would end up being such a closed circle
awesome video, as usual.
Love this tarantula 💗
Wish the tarantula collective YT channel reach 100k subs this month for real the effort of quality and content deserves a million subs make it happen peeps share this too on fb

Great video!✨💯
My a hentzi will be here today at 12 and its 3am and I'm so excited I cant sleep! This will be my fifth T!
Just an fyi, I just purchased a pair, males are all brown while the females only have the black legs. Both are beautiful and fun to watch!
Great video
Excellent, perfect way to begin my morning 😊 gorgeous species 😍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome video. Very educational. Plz make more of these on other species!!🤘🤘🤘🕷
Thanks! Will do!
Nice video!!
How did you know I ordered two of these last night? Wonderful video as always, thank you for sharing your experience 😃
These are super underrated! Mine is always out and walks around a ton and is a great eater. And I personally find these very pretty. Though there aren’t any that I consider ugly so yeah😅😅😅
You always like your comments I love how positive you are tarantula collective
Thanks for info! It'd be useful for us newbies to indicate how to tell spiderling, juveline and adult, like a size guide in those feeding graphics? I believe I just got two of these as spiderlings (as they're very smol). First tarantulas, I meant to get one, but I was being indecisive af and added two to cart (also got two other [blue bottle and white knee] as way to experience some different types so the price didn't seem too high). Been re-watching this and some other guides a few times so can hopefully raise em well!
My 4 are Black as can be. Cobalt blue is my favorite. I also have the Arizona blonde. And totally different colored.
That intro was gold xD
lol...awesome...glad you liked it
New viewer and subscriber here! I’m also fairly new to the hobby and have only one Tarantula (Grammostola rosea) and saw a Texas Brown Tarantula at an exotic pet store near me in Houston and was curious about them being that I’m a fellow Texan. I’ll be watching more of your videos to expand my knowledge. Thank you for the educational video, and keep up the great work.
Thanks a lot and welcome to the channel! I have over 100 videos now...so you have some catching up to do...lol 🙂
Awesome video! My 5 & 6 yr old boys (along with their father) caught a wild Texas Brown Tarantula. I was terrified at first but it has grown on me over the last week…
I honestly can’t believe how animated they are, if that’s the right word for it.
When it’s frightened it jumps and covers it’s face, reminds me of a little kid 😅
He ate a tiny tree frog we caught and about 4 days later he ate a small katydid.
He was so excited when he saw it, he jumped for joy and devoured it and dragged it back to its hide.
I go between calling it a him and an it because I can’t tell if it’s male or female yet. The abdomen is almost solid black and I can’t see much, it’s also about 4.5-5” leg span. So we think it could be full grown maybe?
We gave him a coconut hut/hide and he seems to love it. He comes out often, and climbs on top of stuff and appears to be watching us. He lets us handle him and then tells us when he’s had enough and goes back to his hide.
He also laid a bit of webbing on the floor of his hide.
I have read since bringing him home, that we should not feed frogs to them. Is this true? We actually caught the frog first, and only had 1 travel habitat with us and it was fairly large. We caught the tarantula next and he pretty much immediately ate the frog…. It was gone by morning and all that was left was a rolled up “shell” of what was a tiny tree frog.
AKA Missouri tarantula. We’ve gotten a couple here in St. Louis. And seen them when we were camping. ;)
This is hilarious because I was actually looking up research on where to find them
Cool T. That tarantula is cool as well 😝
I just got one from a Colorado reptile convention. I’m waiting to find out it’s gender. Its the sweetest little tarantula I’ve ever met
Cool Tarantula😎
Really nice video keep up the amazing work 💯🕷️🕸️
Thank you so much 😁
@@tarantulacollective you're welcome 😁 I always enjoy watching your videos
Lemme tell ya, the reality that this could be in my yard made me want to get one even more, it has a story!! People can come over and say hey what is that, and you can tell them that they can find it here in the US!! Very cool
I've recently got 2 shipments from Paladin Exotics. They have great choices and super reasonable prices.
Yeah they sent me a free sling a. Hentzi so kinda excited but nervous since the order in which I got the freebie was gonna be my first time keeping a sling. So now I have two.
Hi bro another great video.. iv just got a couple new Ts and I love to see a husbandry on them. Its a t. Violeta (purple tree spider) and a panama blonde ..
