Yo' about the T getting its legs stuck in things... my murinus does it even in the wholes of the enclosure, she even gets them stuck for a while in styrofoam hides and her normal not textured pot hide... I think it's got a lot to do with T's' individual morphology as my G. pulchra and aphonopelma steindachneri have tiny tiny hooks with tiny suction cups on their legs whereas the murinus, cobalt blue, thai black, and some other old world species have really big hooks and suction cups....
@@petermeichan3160 maybe a zilla bulb, but away from it. Also, Pockies aren't really tropical and the temps in india and asia where they live can lower to 10-8 C
I just came home with a mexican fire leg that is about 3 - 4 inches and after putting it (dont know sex yet) in it's new home it just stays still in one of the hiding places most of the day and night. Is this normal? Also theu told me it is only 15 months old. Dpes thwt male sense for a 15 month pld to be 3 to 4 inches? Maybe a female?
"The pet store knows best" dude I WORK at a pet store and IM watching YOUR video to learn more about them. We definitely dont require any formal training and I'm constantly hearing my coworkers tell people incorrect, easy to google information. Please do your own research always! Dont trust anybody that's trying to sell you something
It really depends on the pet store but most pet stores have no idea what they're doing I've heard horror stories about them getting dart frogs in and having no clue what to do places like PetSmart and Petco they just hire random people a lot of the time it don't even know what they're doing
@@melissamcenneny8853 yeah for real :/ stopped asking them for advice a long time ago. Only exception is a guy I met yesterday who got super into talking about his “”friend’s”” illegal pets (my state has some of the strictest laws on pets,, like there were a few years where you couldn’t have ANY tarantula without a license. Pets along the lines of axolotls and wild animals they’d help before releasing) when I started talking about an incredibly common toad (literally everywhere) that is for some reason illegal in the state. I totally think his “friend” was just him but he couldn’t say that without risk haha. Got lots of good info from him that I actually trust over any other employee I’ve ever talked to there
Pet stores don’t know shit about having tarantulas I’ve called most of them out on a lot of bs about tarantulas not saying your one of them but majority of them are just plain dense to the subject.
hey hey! im doing the same thing lmao, im trying to learn more about a curly haired tarantula we got! i always tell people to do a lot of their own research themselves before they come to us too, but i just waant to know cause i kindaa want one lmao
Billie Eillish fan my mom is terrified of my tarantulas but a long time ago my parents told me that I can have whatever pets I want if I paid for it myself. So I did. And now a lot of money later I have 10 tarantulas, a ball python, 4 turtles, 2 bearded dragons, and 2 leopard geckos. I think it may work for you to just tell them you’ll pay yourself and that they never even have to look at it and it can stay in your room.😁
i have a tarantula in my room and i love her but if i see a spider in my damn room i’m running and calling someone to get it tf out of my house like no
Not me having Arachnophobia with any spider except pet spiders. Not me loving insects and arachnoids yet hating insects and arachnoids anywhere near me make it make sense.
I love this. I appreciate the encouraging tone of this. There are so many people who shame people for making mistakes or not knowing better, but you are so encouraging. My first tarantula was a rose hair too, and I made so many of these mistakes!
Honorable mention, be careful where you source your plants if using live ones. I thought it would be fine if I thoroughly cleaned the plant and de-dirted the roots well. I have induced DKS in my Asian Forest Scorpion as a result. I think I caught the symptoms in time to save it, but he is very sick.
Makes me laugh when they say about a sponge in the water - where the heck does a sponge appear in the natural habitat, does the tarantula plod through the jungle to a store and buy one!
Eezee Listen back when sponges in the water became mainstream care tips, the thought was that the T would drown even in shallow dishes. It was thought that they drank from wet leaves or moss in the wild so the sponge was to loosely simulate that. I owned a pet store for almost ten years, entered the biz in 1999 but I did a lot of research back then so I knew about the animals I sold. About a year later I dove a little deeper into T slings, had to learn a lot through trial and error. I just got back into them and have seen some of the husbandry info has changed a bit.
Personally for me it's because I need to keep the crickets from drowning, and I do occasionally hear that from others as well. I don't use a sponge for multiple reasons but I do keep a few rocks in there, it works well enough.
I really wish you and Exotics and all the more experienced keepers had been around 20 years ago. My poor G rosea put up with A LOT from a VERY inexperienced keeper. I thought she had died when I saw her molt the first time. Sponges - yep, I did that. Her substrate was literally pebbles and her enclosure was for a reptile. I just lost her to old age at 20 years old. Next time I am ready to take on another T, thanks to y'all's UA-cam channels, my new T will have it much, much easier.
Honestly it’s the same for me I have no idea how my G rosea has made it this long. I bought her 8 years ago knowing NOTHING about keeping. I don’t even wanna mention the mistakes I’ve realized I made with her now that I’m a more experienced keeper. She’s a trooper that Trixxy.
I had my mother look after my g rosea for a week while I was moving house. Then she started moulting. My mother naturally thought she killed it, so gave the tank a good shake to ‘bring it back to life’. A year or two later, I was moving again.... my sister took her in SAME THING HAPPENED!
Dustin Campbell - Oh, you mean teleporting from one spot to another, and you didn't even see it move!! 😂 I almost learned that the hard way with my Golden Baboon!! I knew from doing research that they were "fast", but I way underestimated there speed!! Luckily it didn't get away, but that's a great point to bring up. ESPECIALLY to people new to the hobby that might think, " it's a big spider, it can't be that fast". 😂
Try an H. Maculata that puts gokus instant transmission to shame. No matter how much I prepare for anything this sling shows me something new. The only T in my entire collection that loves fighting more than freiza lol
i used to keep tarantulas back in the day, and im getting back into after nearly 12 years. i can say without a doubt that i needlessly lost several of them due to some of these mistakes, and the husbandry has changed a lot over the past 12 years and for the better. videos like this are a huge help to new, experienced, and returning keepers. and i love the "and in 10 or 20 years from now we will be doing something different, so dont feel bad, just adapt" portion at the end. this is so true. keep up the good work!
I found that its helpful to microwave whatever substrate you use for about two minutes on high. It's the equivalent of putting the substrate through an autoclave. Great way to sterilize your substrate and prevent mold, mites, etc.
Yeah i did that finally as the last step once it eventually dried out. Micro just to kill every possible animate bug or germ. Trouble with the eco earth though is the drying out. i did a brick and had two gas ovens with three trays each baking for ever, piles spread on every window sill for ages. my house stunk like earth for weeks. once dry though, easy storage, but i dread opening a new brick.
The youtuber Dave's little beasties would shock you then. I don't own spiders. I don't really like spiders. But I watch spider videos for some reason. Today I learned it's not good to let a tarantula become Chonk.
Appreciate this video a lot I love when people do mistake videos so people understand how to actually take care of a tarantula. It's not that people are dumb or stupid when it comes to taking tarantulas their misinformed pretty much 97% of the time and I appreciate when hobbyists like you or me or a few of the other ones that come out and stay that these are the mistakes that will happen when you have a tarantula for the first time! Thanks for the video man appreciate it keep them coming! Happy Keeping!!
I'm so glad I watched this, I didn't know about the mesh being a potential danger. I'm getting my first tarantula in a few weeks, a curly toe, and I want to make sure they live a happy and healthy life.

Tom H when the they’re slings definitely... Sub Adults and adults ( females ) not so much in my own experience, but as long as the enclosure isn’t like something ridiculous big
I'm just starting with keeping tarantulas. Fortunately I haven't made any of this mistakes and my 6 babies are doing great, but I think that your video could be really helpful for beginners!
I bought my first sling from a gal who has been keeping them and breeding them for a while. She was SO helpful in helping me get started and avoiding mistakes.
My second tarantula I bought from the pet store and I was so mad because they didn't have ANY IDEA even what kind it was. I'm still trying to figure it out.
I had a snake as a kid and I feel like I got the advice you got for your tarantula care for my snake, and for my species of snake, it still wasn't the right advice. I realize how amazing it was that so many of our exotics even survived care with the information we got from pet stores or old books. I learned a lot now that I'm older on the proper care for snakes, and trying to learn more for tarantulas too. Thanks for this video and your species specific care guides!
I kept trying to feed my GBB, she was my first T, when she was a sling during her first premolt in my care. I would take out the uneaten cricket when she would run away from it, but then would try and feed her again 3 days later. This drew out her premolt time to over a month. Now when she refuses food, being a voracious GBB, I know it's premolt time and don't try and feed her. Her second premolt lasted 16 days compared to the 36 days my attempts to feed her the first time caused because I noticed the signs and left her alone.
I have a GBB and I call her my green bolty blue if I’m not careful working on her enclosure she will bolt it happened twice, but I look if she webs her hide I know not to feed her yet I have gone to feed her and hasn’t eaten I know she moulting
Thanks for the video. I had just gotten back into tarantulas after being away for about 20 years. When my wife and I first got married, she would scream at the sight of spiders and cockroaches... Now, she's picked every tarantula I have and she's been raising dubia roaches for our geckos. She's come a long ways and so have I. Great video!
Are you really afraid of a small creature you can so easily crush? Just think about the immense power you have compared to a tarantula or spider. It's all in your head... Just give it a thought, and next thing you know, you aren't arachnophobic any longer.
@@bencehorvath6094 Spiders can be small, but they can still be deadly to bigger creatures like us. They're also very fast and have really good instincts, so it isn't always easy to kill one... Hence our arachnophobia
@@bencehorvath6094 That is not how phobias work. I know perfectly well that the spiders where I live can't hurt me. But the sight of certain spiders instantly triggers anxiety up to a panic attack. It's a response of the nervous system I can't control. I have already come a long way by watching lots of spider videos, I had an adorable pet jumping spider and most eight legged guys are my friends now, but the barn funnel weaver size and shape still causes instant panic. I hope I can get it under control as well. Fear isn't just in our head, it's a complex response caused by brain signals, hormones and our nervous system and you have to work on it the right way or you can make things worse. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
I’ve recently come across your channel, Ive no intention of keeping a tarantula but your channel helps me get an understanding of them - your def helping me get over my phobia!
My 14 year old has wanted a tarantula since she was about 4 but I was always too scared & thought they were so hard to keep. Came across your video by accident & I've sat & watched the whole thing. You've definitely caught my interest although I will be doing a lot of research before I give in & get her one. Thanks so much!!!
You scared me and made me think I was over watering my t stirmi. Thank you for clearing up what species actually need to be misted. Guess the breeder wasn’t wrong after all haha
You have helped me learn more about my new (first) tarantula than any website or other video has been able to. Definitely subscribed, can’t wait to see more!
I've owned many tarantulas; new and old world, so i know all of these things but i must say you said it in such a critical and articulate way that I think people will take these tips to heart and hopefully save a tarantula in the beginner hands! Thanks for the video.
Hey Richard, great name for a start! Same as mine....I have been watching your videos and felt confident to finally set myself up with my first set of slings, I have loved these animals for such a long time and my young children share the same passion I do. I have recently received 2 Tlticatl alpopilosis and a Laisiodora Pahryhybana, they are the most beautiful little slings and thanks to your advise, have the perfect homes and are happy and healthy, I can't wait for them to mature and will enjoy every step of the way. Thanks for all your advise and knowledge it's awesome!
You are by far my fave trantula youtuber. You don't preach yet at the same time don't talk down to your audience...thank you. I am hoping to get my First T this year and been watching T vids for over a year...and after findinv you a few months ago...I binge watched all your vids and am re watching again. Have learned more with you than all the others. Thank you Richard.
First time owning a tarantula (curly hair) and it’s very weird having a pet, a living breathing being living amongst me, that hasn’t eaten in and has been buried for ~2 months now. I know that’s normal, but still trying not to freak out LOL
Thank you for the awesome video!! I'm a new tarantula owner and I just got myself a Brachypelma Hamorii, thankfully I got her from an experienced pet store that I work at with very well seasoned tarantula keepers one of which is a great friend of mine. He pretty much told me everything you describe in your video, so I am so pleased that I am doing it right. I have subscribed to your channel I love the room!
That's awesome! I wish I had a pet store like that in my town. You are very lucky and props to that store and their employees! Thanks for subscribing. I am glad you enjoyed the content and support the channel...welcome :)
I am very lucky indeed, My friend/Colleague is a very seasoned keeper so I'm grateful for the hands on learning. Thank you for having me! I'm really enjoying the channel and the facebook group!
Thank you so much for creating and making this video. I am a new Mama to my ever sooo sweet, love able, and kind Curly Tarantella Spider named Emily. I love her so much. I grew up with spiders in Louisiana and Texas and I always thought they are sooo pretty and graceful. I have learned sooo much from watching your video. When I bought Emily on 5/10/2022 I was told she is about 2 years old. I felt sorry for her only getting to eat once a week. Especially being a native Texan, I was thinking this is horrible! So I started feeding Emily one cricket ever 2 days. She would of coarse eat the cricket, and always seems so happy and quite content. I want Emily to have the very best life possible. Today, I got on Amazon to order her some new substrate. I hope I bought the right products for her. I’ve learned through my own research she has 8 eyes, yet can’t see very well. However, she can hear up to 10 feet. I keep her next to my recliner chair and she does know and recognize my voice. Also, I have a cat, named Jillian. Jillian is fully aware of Emily, and they actually communicate together using vibrational frequencies. I feel extremely blessed to be part of this collective realm. Once again, thank you sooo much for putting this video out. I truly appreciate you taking your time, energy, and effort in helping we Spider lovers along the best journey. Sent with kindness, Kate

I'm really enjoying your videos. I don't have any tarantulas but I have jumping spiders. I've been afraid of spiders most of my life because of something that happened when I was a toddler. Jumping spiders won me over with their cute faces and intelligent, inquisitive nature. I've seen some beautiful tarantulas and may consider owning one or more in the future but I don't want to make a hasty decision or get a pet that I'm not prepared to care for. So, for now, I'll keep admiring them from afar. I'll keep watching your channel as well as some others that I enjoy. Maybe someday I'll do more than just watch but for now I'll be chilling with my jumpers and my other pets. Cheers!
My first tarantula was a Brachypelma Hamorii and she had a mesh lid. Poor thing kept getting stuck up there, got to the point where I tried to safely get her down and she fell and burst her abdomen. Really wish I had watched this video before that happened, but lesson learned I suppose. Very good video Richard, thank you very much for giving such helpful advice!
I found this video very informative. I don't have tarantulas, but I'm researching them because I do plan on getting one soon. Being Australian, we only have old worlds here, so I'll likely get some experience caring for some huntsmans and insects first, then move onto tarantulas when I feel like I'm ready.
Lol “I’m gonna keep huntsmen spiders then move to tarantulas when I feel I’m ready”. Most Tarantulas are 10x easier to keep than a huntsman spider lmao.
@@alexhshhshsh9961 Based on what I've read online, not really. The new world tarantulas are from the Americas and it's illegal to import exotic animals into Australia. So, you won't really be able to get a new world tarantula in Australia unless someone started breeding them before the importation laws took effect and they're still doing it or they're illegally caught and imported.
It’s nice to see you pointing out the wrongs you did when you first got into the hobby. A lot of keepers I’m sure would claim they never made a mistake. Heck I know I have with the screen lids & even still have some. Great video & thank you for sharing.
You did it again... you always address the things I very recently consider, and you do this so succinctly and entirely relatable … excellent, Richard. Thank you....By the way, were those springtails in the enclosure with the last vid of the molting T? They're safe, right, even with a molting T?
Pretty sure there should be no issues with springtails. They are decomposers and only pick on poop and dead stuff. They might pick on the molt if it is left in there long enough, but they are not interested in living tissue.
Just popped back here after a few years of tarantula keeping myself to say thank you. Your channel was my first point of contact for information on keeping tarantulas, and I binged so much of your stuff so I could make sure I take the best care of my 8-legged friends. Years later, my 3 tarantulas and 2 scorpions seem to be happy and healthy. As I'm typing this, my T. Albo is coming out of her hide (it's time for her evening walk). Thank you for doing what you do! 😊👏
I am so glad I came across this video, there are so many contrasting bits of information out there it is hard to decide what is best. Thank you for friendly, non judgemental info, much appreciated xx
Thanks for watching! I am glad you found it helpful and non judgemental. I try really hard to share from my mistakes and experience to help others without being condescending about it....it drives me crazy when someone is condescending because they have info someone else doesn't have but is actively seeking.
Thanks for the support...i appreciate the sentiment. My channel is still pretty new..I have only been uploading regularly for 31 weeks....so it takes a lot of time for the word to get out about a new channel. But liking and commenting on the videos really helps with getting the youtube algorithm to suggest the videos to others that might find it interesting, so i really appreciate you leaving a comment...that is awesome. The channel had about 4000 subs at the beginning of August and now it is over 7000, so i am not gonna complain about that :)
You have such a delightful voice to listen to while watching this. I thought having a SPIDER as a pet would be simple. After watching several videos online.. YOUR channel is so far THE best! Great list for beginners to FOCUS on and I don't feel toooooo overwhelmed, but this is a lot of information. WAAAAAY more than I had anticipated. I went from having a lifelong fear of spiders, and now I have my first tarantula only a week ago! Still terrified, but going to take time to get to know this little one.
This video is fantastic, so informative and understanding of people new to the hobby. Great advice to keep developing your knowledge and practices as you go along and learn.
I don't know how I got here (I was watching some gaming videos lmao), but I'm glad I did! I've always wanted a pet tarantula, so knowing these ahead of time will save me a lot of trouble in the near future. Thanks man!
I LOVE this video. Not only do you give good explanations for how things are outdated, but this is not at all shaming. I didn't even THINK about the acrylic shifting, which could actually benefit me keeping a Huntsman too.
This video was really helpful i recently lost my almost brand new pink toe (my first tarantula) and this has really helped me find out what i was doing wrong
LoL.. my wife stays on top of keeping my ego in check...lol. For real though, thanks for your comments. It is nice to hear people are enjoying the videos or find them helpful. I probably spend too much time on them, but I enjoy making them almost as much as I do actually keeping the T's...lol.
I just bought my first tarantula at a reptile convention. I'm determined to take proper care of him. Thanks for making these informative videos they're a big help!
Some excellent advice. I bought my first tarantula from a reptile shop in 1987 and had the huge tank, heat bulb, aquarium sand as substrate! Within 12 months, I had found the British Tarantula Society and was keeping my ever growing collection in much better conditions. We were obsessed with humidity back then and my vivs were always dripping with water!
I'm scared of spiders but not AS scared of tarantulas. I held a Mexican Red Knee at a pet store once about 9 years ago and have wanted one myself ever since. This video made it seem more reasonable/doable/approachable. I think I'm most worried about it dying prematurely in my care.
Wow this is really professional and well done , extremely detailed I mean you over sun angles that can hit your enclosure , that’s precision! More informative than National Geographic and I get good vibes from you , I’m impressed def liking and subscribing.🔥
Nice informative upload, have owned my pink toe for a few months and she’s my first T, Ive got her in a zoo med enclosure with mesh top but after watching this I’m going to make an acrylic top as soon as possible, she eats one roach a week and seems to drink well, first time I saw her at her water dish I thought she’d committed suicide as she was laying in the dish but had two of her feet on the glass lol never bothered with the sponge as I’d heard loads of bad stuff about mould / bacteria, Looking at getting a Mexican red knee but thinking of getting a sling this time round 😎
I found a few channels worth watching and none of them are very popular. Yours is one of them. I love the room, attitude, topics, the load of information and the fact that you do all of that in a short time. I don't feel like I am wasting any time watching you. Good job with lightning, editing and sound. Subscribed!
Awesome info, I'm happy to report that in my 5yrs of keeping T's - I haven't made any of these mistakes! My daughter and I have 3 and we love them, thoug they're not for everyone- my husband tolerates our little 8legged family 😁 and everything else I've ever kept!
those are spring tails. I intentionally put them in the bioactive enclosures because they are like the cleaning crew. they eat up the mold and things like that.
Springtails - they are SO good for animal enclosures as they prevent mold and eat up other nasty leftovers. Deals with 95% of the enclosure maintenence I only do work when rehousing now.
There is a very rare chance of harmful mites and usually only come on WC T's. Most mites you'll get are grain mite and are essentially just more annoying (to us not to the T) springtails.
@@Merlin_UA-cam So, i should get a few for my enclosures then? never used them before as wasn't sure. i have 24x12 enclosures = how many springtails in each? though i have the plastic ones with air gaps at the top and in the green lid so i guess they just crawl out and bred in my house, no?
I am scared of spiders, but I appreciate these tips! My boyfriend recently got a baby pink toe, and I'm researching as much as I can to help the little guy grow strong and healthy! Hopefully the little fuzzball will help me grow over my fear.
You just got a new subscriber, yesterday I found a tiger rump in my house and with fear and curiosity I decided to keep it (at the moment I just knew it was a tarantula) and didn't know there is a whole universe of tarantula and I'm pretty excited to learn more
What do you do with the food in that case? Do you like just throw away the bugs? I'm asking because I'm doing research before getting my first tarentula.
I gotta tell you young man, I hesitated before clicking on your video. But, I'm happy that I did. After that really loud beginning, you calmed down and presented your material in a clear, concise and targeted manner that made me yearn for the battle field. At first I felt like I was listening to a young boot Lieutenant telling me he had the entire enemy battalion's fire plan all figured out by himself. I was wrong. You seem to know your way around the mess tent and you also back up your suggestions with hard supportive information; all the while, making it clear that these are suggestions based on your experience of 20 years in the field and plenty of study of the dissertations of numerous publications. Damn fine job you did there young man, damn fine job.
This is kinda my problem with new owners, a lot of this can be prevented just by looking at basic care guides, like the substrate thing is something that should be done beforehand.
I agree, but you cant deny the fact that some people fall victim to impulse buying. They're at a show or pet store and see a tarantula and think "why not". And theres some videos of UA-cam with millions of views and likes that was posted 10-12 years ago with horrible husbandry advice. Some people check one source and go from there. Hopefully my videos are just a starting point for people. They will watch a video like this and get motivated to keep researching and acquire as much info on their species and its husbandry as possible.
100% agreed. new hobbyist here. started out a few months ago with a gorgeous sub-adult female lasiodora parahybana. spent at least four months just watching videos on youtube, reading through forums, care sheets, etc., just doing my basic research beforehand. went to different pet stores asking very specific questions to see if what the employees say lines up with what i had read to find a trustworthy place. haven't had any issues so far, still reading up on tarantula care and behavior everyday. yesterday i was talking to a store clerk at a diy store when buying stuff to build enclosures and mentioned that it's for housing tarantulas. turns out he's also a new hobbyist that just got his first one two weeks. HE COULDN'T EVEN NAME THE SPECIES AND WASN'T EVEN SURE IF IT'S A TARANTULA FFS. ("like, one of those big spiders, tara- is that right? tarantula? yeah a tarantula, that's it!") i cringed so hard my spine is now solid diamond. i tried my best not to be condescending and still slip in that doing the research is crucial. he told me he's watching the dark den on youtube so at least he's got a good source for basic information regarding husbandry. long story short: do your research kids. a tarantula might look alien to some, but it is a living and breathing animal, treat it appropriately and try to learn from others' mistakes instead of figuring things out the hard way. hands down one of the best hobbies i've ever picked up. i owe a lot to ttc, tom moran and lots of your fellow tarantula youtubers. ❤️🕷
Basic care guides online can be outdated and miss leading. Not everyone is programmed to find the arachnobaords forum which is my second source of information. My first is hands on experience. But he's right by always researching and doing our homework to improve our methods. The beautiful thing about it is. Naturally all of us T owners develop skills in the field at our own pace. It's great to see this many people connecting :)
Dustin Campbell - Yes, and definitely DO NOT BELIEVE EVERYTHING THE PETCO/PETSMART BROCHURE TELLS YOU!!! Most of it is GENERAL information, and does not pertain to any certain species.
Or like myself, my friend passed away and he left me his snake, I had never owned a snake but took it on without a second thought and now I have 10. Everytime I look at the snake I smile because she reminds me of my friend and the love he had for animals. 8 years on and I wouldnt get rid of her or any of my other animals for love nor money
I've been planning to get a tarantula but it took me sooo long to finally decide to get one myself next month , as I'm only waiting for few more weeks to get my 1st tarantula I'm grateful to stumble upon this content! This is a big help for me to be oriented before finally having the tarantula in my possession!☺️
I was thinking of doing a false bottom for my Ts, do you think that is ok? I already got some springtails cultured. My Ts are good with the feeding. They dont eat unless they are hungry. Even tho I try feeding a week at a time, most times my Ts wont take the roach if I offer it. B.t.w that room 👌💟
Holy cow! A lot of this I did with my first rose hair because pet store said. Sponge in water, wood chips at bottom, 10 gal tank with mesh top. 🤦🏻♀️ she did live over 20 yrs but still lol. She climbed up only a few times and I thought she was hot lol. Nice to know. I want to get a CBB which I’ve been researching. But details like no sponge in water is nice to know. My rose hair I got in 1993 so I see a lot has changed lol. 👍
Checking up after a year and i seeing nothing of this list is in my daily tarantula keeping is such a relieve. Thanks for the video! Always nice to have a bit of confirmation
I’m watching this because I’m looking forward to getting a tarantula, and the way you refer to the community so inclusively and proudly is really cool. I feel like I’m already a member of the community :)
Hey! I noticed in your top 10 video that you're from Wheeling! I personally go to school at West Liberty. If you're looking for a good, local tarantula shop, you should check out Off The Hook Exotic Pets in Ambridge, PA! They're awesome, and have plenty of T's.
Rock on.. inwill have to check them out soon...I had seen on Totally Ubdateables channel he had visited a pet store around the Pittsburgh area that had a few Ts but I was never able to figure out where they were. Now I'm gonna have to go visit them. Thanks for the heads up and for leaving this comment. I appreciate the input. And it is very cool your going to West Liberty. Once I keep the new T room/ studio set up...you will have to stop by and visit.
Love your vids of information , even tho i have been Reading and researched for over a year and are about to order my first tes its still awesome to refresh the mind with more info! Keep it up
Hey just wanted to say I really appreciate your honest and genuine words and attitudes. You're a great influence to the tarantula and exotic pet worlds!
Misting has killed more of my tarantulas than anything else. In UK though we definitely need heat mats from around November. Unless you are one of the nutters that likes spending £100's on heating and having your house hot 24/7. I found my T's have always been happier on vermiculite than coco fibre and vermiculite seems to be better for humidity. It's easy to get coco fibre soggy by accident. Feeding spot on, I very rarely feed and my T's are fine. My Chille Rose lived about 30 years on next to nothing. This video is really great. Only thing I disagree on is the ground. I have never accidentally killed a tarantula on vermiculite. I have with every other substrate. Vermiculite is easy to keep clean too. Just peel out the top layer of web with all the crap caught in it and it leaves a relatively fresh layer underneath.
Misting is dangerous especially for African tarantulas which have weaker defence against mold than Asian or South American ones. I lost an OBT for this reason.
Snappy Snapfire I feel you. Mine was on a diet for 8 months, which totally freaked me out because as a new keeper, and only used to mammals and birds,I wasn't used to a pet not eating
I’ve been keeping T’s for over 30 years and I thought you did a pretty good job on your video. You covered most of the problems that occur or could occur and like you, I have encountered most of problems you discussed and learned (sometimes the hard way) Again, good job and thank you.
Thank you for your very informative videos ive had snakes, birds, cats, and dogs but recently ive thought about potentially trying out tarantulas and i do a crazy amount of research before i do anything and ive been going through a lot of your videos and i am legitimately learning a lot

On top of that, Generally speaking, just cause it's in their natural habitat doesn't mean it's good for them.
@@carissafleming5424 WRONG
Well said Eezee👍🏻
A year or two later, I was moving again.... my sister took her in
SAME THING HAPPENED!
Underestimating the speed of old world Tarantulas and being at there mercy to go back into their enclosures :) lol
Great point!

Awesome! Thank you!
i used to keep tarantulas back in the day, and im getting back into after nearly 12 years. i can say without a doubt that i needlessly lost several of them due to some of these mistakes, and the husbandry has changed a lot over the past 12 years and for the better. videos like this are a huge help to new, experienced, and returning keepers. and i love the "and in 10 or 20 years from now we will be doing something different, so dont feel bad, just adapt" portion at the end. this is so true. keep up the good work!
Its better to bake it on a tray in the oven....it kills more
@@ladym31 and it can be spread out more thus can be heated evenly.

Good to know! New GBB keeper here. Thanks for sharing.

Me: Has arachniphobia.
Also me: Watches this.
Me again: Tarantulas are adorable!
Are you really afraid of a small creature you can so easily crush? Just think about the immense power you have compared to a tarantula or spider. It's all in your head... Just give it a thought, and next thing you know, you aren't arachnophobic any longer.
@@bencehorvath6094 i am aragnofhobic 2 and its not so easy
That's exactly how I started off too! The more videos I watched, the less afraid of spiders I became.

I found this video very informative. I don't have tarantulas, but I'm researching them because I do plan on getting one soon. Being Australian, we only have old worlds here, so I'll likely get some experience caring for some huntsmans and insects first, then move onto tarantulas when I feel like I'm ready.
If you mess with huntsmans you are ready lol
Don’t we have new worlds in Australia?

You did it again... you always address the things I very recently consider, and you do this so succinctly and entirely relatable … excellent, Richard. Thank you....By the way, were those springtails in the enclosure with the last vid of the molting T? They're safe, right, even with a molting T?
Thanks a lot...I am glad it was helpful for you. Thanks so much for leaving a comment and letting me know that. It means a lot for sure.
Pretty sure there should be no issues with springtails. They are decomposers and only pick on poop and dead stuff. They might pick on the molt if it is left in there long enough, but they are not interested in living tissue.
Yes springtails are safe for your t even if its molting, they help with the eco system and reduce the risk of things such as mold.

WOW! That is amazing! It is always interesting how people stumble across my channel..i am glad you found it though! Welcome!
I LOVE this video. Not only do you give good explanations for how things are outdated, but this is not at all shaming. I didn't even THINK about the acrylic shifting, which could actually benefit me keeping a Huntsman too.
Thank you for this video!!! As a newer spider owner, you and Tarantula Kat have been a life saver! You're the best!
This video was really helpful i recently lost my almost brand new pink toe (my first tarantula) and this has really helped me find out what i was doing wrong
Man, you're an expert at these videos now! Lovin all this!
Thanks!
@@tarantulacollective thank you for the quality content, and ego control ;) lol
LoL.. my wife stays on top of keeping my ego in check...lol.
Update?
Thanks a lot my friend. That is some very high praise! I appreciate that. What are some other topics you'd like to see me cover in the future?
I loved the video! You just got a new subscriber
Can't wait to see this channel get big, there's a lot of potential in here
Keep up the good work!
Thank you.
Subscribed!
Thanks a lot my friend! That is high praise...I appreciate your support!
Awesome info, I'm happy to report that in my 5yrs of keeping T's - I haven't made any of these mistakes! My daughter and I have 3 and we love them, thoug they're not for everyone- my husband tolerates our little 8legged family 😁 and everything else I've ever kept!
What are those small white bugs roaming around the tarantula enclosures? Are they different from harmful mites?
those are spring tails.
Which part is that?
@@Merlin_UA-cam So, i should get a few for my enclosures then? never used them before as wasn't sure. i have 24x12 enclosures = how many springtails in each? though i have the plastic ones with air gaps at the top and in the green lid so i guess they just crawl out and bred in my house, no?
I am scared of spiders, but I appreciate these tips! My boyfriend recently got a baby pink toe, and I'm researching as much as I can to help the little guy grow strong and healthy! Hopefully the little fuzzball will help me grow over my fear.
i got my first tarantula to get over my fear of spiders....so you may be a tarantula keeper yet :)
Just got my first two T's so I'm absorbing these videos! I got a curlyhair juvy and an Arizona Blond sling!
You just got a new subscriber, yesterday I found a tiger rump in my house and with fear and curiosity I decided to keep it (at the moment I just knew it was a tarantula) and didn't know there is a whole universe of tarantula and I'm pretty excited to learn more
Rock on! Welcome to the channel!
I didn’t know about the mesh top problem! looks like I have a project. muffet needs a safe enclosure!
What a great spider name! Mine is Miss Scarlett, 'cause she's a Chilean Rose & kind of pinkish. 🕷️
Muffet for a spider name is so adorable! I named mine Reinata because she is from Brazil.
Isnt muffet a spider character from undertale?
Can I pet your muffin???
My ones name is fang XD
Can you make a husbandry for pterinopelma sazimai 😔
Love the transition ❤️
Thanks! I sure will!
i had a G.R that went 2 years without eating...still alive and kicking, 10 years on
paul tress 2 years?!?!
How
@@galaxyhero81 I found out that some species can go their whole lives without food
What do you do with the food in that case? Do you like just throw away the bugs? I'm asking because I'm doing research before getting my first tarentula.
Here here you can breed your own food! Just give the insects juicy fruits/vegetables/dog/cat kibble and let them breed, it’s much cheaper :)
This guy is an incredible teacher in general. Great communicator. Thank you for being clear and humble for us all.
Thanks for the klind comment! I appreciate the support and encouragement!
Very informative, I’m taking any advice since I’m getting my first T here very soon
You hit some key points! Great Advise!!!!
Your videos are great. It's awesome that a guy like you is making informative videos.
I've had the issue with tarantulas getting stuck in exo-terra mesh lids as well. Luckily I never had any lost legs or tarantulas
i'm so glad i found your videos, im getting a tarantula next month and doing tons of research everyday. I'm learning lots thanks to you!
@@tarantulacollective I'd love to! I'll stay in touch, and I'll bring pics of my 2 T's as well!
One of my dogs ate one of my old worlds once.... Whenever it decided to bolt during a rehousing... I was very upset
Most places say a Mexican Red Knee will need a heat pad, is this tartantula the one exception when it comes to a well heated enclosure?
No, I'd say those are old care sheets you are looking at. Basic husbandry guidance for all species of Tarantulas recommend not using a heat pad
Thank you so much for this video! I just got my brachypelma klassi and I want to make sure I do everything right.
Congratulations! That's an awesome species.
the_tarantula_collective thank you! I’m so excited.
16:20 holy shit i almost died at that, i thought i was in a voice chat or something

Can you make husbadry about KBT, cobalt blue, thailand black pls thanks 😊
Greetings from philippines
Your T room is SUPER organized by the way! Love!
I live in Alberta Canada. It's been -45 c for weeks. No heat pad. Don't need a heat pad.
I have a Rosie also that has went over a year with out eating still alive and she is 12 years old now
Snappy Snapfire I feel you. Mine was on a diet for 8 months, which totally freaked me out because as a new keeper, and only used to mammals and birds,I wasn't used to a pet not eating
@@JaneSmith-rx6kx yeah what I understand they can go up to 2 years without food. My tree dwellers love to eat
@13:15 - "went over a year without taking a cricket"
Holy crap!
Gandhi has nothing on that T!!
😦
My A. Chalcodes hasn’t eaten since I bought her. 18months ago! She still has a big pumper on her though, so she’s good.
@@paulhodgkinson7000 How do they pull that off!?
Sounds wild!
Glad it was helpful!
