If you really want more of FLUTE ( traversal) Solo I recommend you this group JETRO TULL SONG IS 🎵 🎶 🎵 1 Locomotive Breath 2 Aqualung 3 Thick as a brick 4 Bungle
Knights in White Satin by Moody Blues is a badass one with a flute solo too. I play guitar and want to turn it into a instrumental and have my boy rap over it.
Such a LEGEND group ..... huge fan of "Mama" Cass Elliot ..... RIP, you are missed. This song ...... BECAME a staple for several groups, including today's musicians who remixed and took this to a new modern level. The Mamas and the Papas are TRUE to me, wish more of the music in the current day had this feel ...... I'm a boy from the BEACH.
The haunting magic comes at 5:19 when Mama Cass only sings "dreamin" while Mama Michelle sings "California Dreamin" Then Cass sings an extended "On such a winters day" while Michelle sings "California Dreamin" at the same time. It is mind bending yet it is so haunting and flows ethereally.
This was the sound around that time leading up to Flower Power yr of 1967 Scott McKenzie If Your Goin To San Francisco wear flowers in your hair is another grt song of 67 , you'll love
Mama Cass was the one in the audience they zoomed in on with the sunglasses at Janis Joplin's concert singing Ball and Chain. If you want some Rock flute playing check out some Jethro Tull live videos.
Michelle Phillips (The slender younger blonde) was married or dating at the time John Phillips (the leader and guitar player). One night John woke her up and wanted to work on a song. He couldn't wait until the morning. That song is California Dreamin' and Michelle got co-writing credit. She says it was the best sleep she has ever missed. The royalties are still flowing in today.
the tall skinny blonde girl is Michelle Phillips - she was a California model before this and her voice was described as "purest soprano in pop music." at the time and she is STILL fine! lol
These 4 were ABBA's vocal ancestors. My parents' Gen.This fab unison was the best and most colorful vocal band of the '60s era.John was a fantastic vocal arranger,Denny a fine male songbird,Michy a soft soprano with killer looks of a shiny filmstar and Cass a huge singing pipeline breathing out decibells. All shapes and sizes one complimented the other in a magical way.I'm a '70s/'80s brought up teenager but TMATP is in my top 3 most fave bands and got all their discography.Exceptional!
When this song was released, it blew people away because nobody had heard the harmonies arranged quite this way in a pop song before. The real vocal powerhouses of course were Denny Doherty (the lead singer in this song) and Cass Elliott, also known as Mama Cass. She also had a solo career before she passed away in, I think, 1974. Her voice, when she let go, was *amazing*. Other songs worth listening to by them include "Monday Monday", "I Saw Her Again" and "Creeque Alley" which is more or less the story of how the band got together.
Iconic 60s singer/songwriter genre. As I always say, that is Live... no tricks, auto tune, computers.. just talent. I'm enjoying your journey together, exploring all this "foreign" language. 60s-80s, the Golden Age of music.
Another great hit by the Mamas and the Papas was MONDAY MONDAY. The blond girl on the far left is Michelle Phillips. She became an actress in the 1980s. The other woman, Cass Elliot (“Mama Cass”) died very young.
The blond had a daughter that was in pop group Wilson Phillips. Check out the song Hold On. Other two girls in that group, their Dad was in The Beach Boys. 3 passed… the blonde is in her 80s I guess and was always hot.
I liked them and they were big when I was in high school. Chynna Phillips is the daughter of Michelle (the blonde) and John (the taller of the two guys and he passed away March 18, 2001). Carnie and Wendy Wilson are the daughters of Brian Wilson of Beach Boys. Denny Doherty (shorter of the two guys) passed January 19, 2007, Mama Cass (Cass Elliot) passed July 29, 1974. Michelle is 77.
You just listened to the iconic hippy sound of the times. That is what many of us looked like (looks kinda funny now of course) and God willing you'll get to be old as well. I always feel privileged to have experienced those times of so much creativity. Appreciate your kind and thoughtful review.
Moody Blues and Jethro Tull both have a lot of flute work. I am not only my grandson's Nana but ALL of his relatives, (which is a LOT) their Nana too! (born 1958), The entire family calls me Nana! Love it and love you guys reactions! Thanks for bringing so much joy to this old woman's heart! In fact, you can call me Nana too for THAT manner! LOL
Love them. I was born in 1962 and I love the music from the 60's and 70's. You should check out Paul Davis "I go crazy" and Redbone "Come and get your Love".
Pure talent. They were amazing band. I grew up with them because my parents bought the albums and we heard this blasting through our house. Amazing memories. Thanks guys. All three of them have passed except Michelle Phillips. And yes Michele was absolutely gorgeous and aged well too. But she’s pretty old now.
For another all time classic song with great harmonies check out The Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations". And, as others have already noted, the flute is featured prominently in most of Jethro Tull's music. (On a side note, "Jethro Tull" is the name of the band, but is not the name of anybody in the band.)
You should check out Jethro Tull, "Locomotive Breath"; Mama Cass Elliot passed a LONG time ago, but the 4 of them were on the top charts for a number of years. Also check out their rendition of "Puff, the Magic Dragon".
All time classic! ♥ Flute solos were a 60s/early 70s thing. Someone should bring that back ;) You guys should check out Bob Dylan sometime! I'd start with Tangled Up In Blue. Just make sure to do the studio version!
Very perceptive of strong HARMONY in the 60’s. For voices. And for people. What an ideal era!!! Thinking pop singers with a hippie flute make a lasting CLASSIC!
You two should really listen to Cass Elliot alone. She's the shorter woman. An amazing voice. She died in 1974. RIP My kids and I used to play this album every Saturday for house cleaning. I introduced my kids to the Mama's and Papa's when they were newborns singing Dream a Little Dream of Me, a solo by Cass, when I rocked them to sleep. Great memories whenever I hear them singing. They're all passed now, except Michelle. She's the blonde. At least I think she's still around.
Personally, I believe Mama Cass had the talent in the group! You definitely need to hear Jethro Tull. Locomotive Breath and Crosseyed Mary in that order. They have some flute in most of their songs. Aqualung is another good song of theirs. Ian Anderson is a musical genius.
It's so hard to explain to young people how iconic these songs are. young folks are really picking up on the talent, no special effects or computers, real instruments no auto tune and recognizing that this is pure talent and writing, how different it is from today. I believe this is a bigger flute you are hearing that plays lower than a regular flute, called an alto flute. Only one member is alive today, Michelle Phillips, the blond. when computers infiltrated over the decades, many musicians lost their jobs as studio musicians...a really f-ing SAD thing.
Listen to Mama Cass Dream a Little Dream. Mama Cass 1974 and John Phillips (tall one) 2001, Dougherty 2007 have passed away. Michelle blonde hair is only survivor.
Here's some trivia. The blonde and the guy with the guitar (Michelle & John Phillips) are the parents of Chyna Phillips, whose band Wilson Phillips is the one that plays in the wedding scene on the movie "Bridesmaids." John was also the father of 2 actresses, McKenzie Phillips and Bijou Phillips. Both were in shows & movies from long before you were born. Haha. Just gives perspective on how old this is.
1960 wasn't as far back as you think. I watch you guys all the time and I was born in 62. When you hit mid 30's you'll realize that time passes pretty fast. Enjoyed the reaction. If you liked the flute you should react to The Mody Blues song- knights in white satin and Jethro Tull's song -Locomotive Breath.
Hope you check out Cass Elliott's solo career-(she hated to be called Mama Cass BTW) She is the larger lady with the lovely voice. You should hear her do "Dream A Little Dream Of Me"-So beautiful and so very hauntingly soothing, She had so much talent and was so down to earth. Lovely woman-miss her a lot! Loved the Mamas and the Papas. Thanks for reviewing this one.
They're doing a kind of call-and-response here, repeating each line. Considering that there aren't that many lyrics to it, it becomes a way to get more out of the song and as a device its energy works really well.
Lol I was born in 59 lol that was an excellent point that you made as far as autotune you had 2 minutes and 25 seconds to put your story across and you'd better be able to sing and you'd better be able to play your instruments it's a great era of music an amazing band go a little deeper check out a few more songs cass died very young left us way too soon what an amazing voice she had powerful.I took this off Google to answer your question about the group......... Phillips is the only surviving member of The Mamas and the Papas. Elliot died in 1974. She reunited with her ex-husband John and former lover Doherty in 1998 for The Mamas and the Papas' induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. John passed away in 2001 and Doherty died in 2007.Apr 27, 2017 God bless good reaction keep spreading the music around.
They had no autotune 60s 70s maybe 80s late , It was " Go sing it again till you get it right,..Studio time was expensive so most were pretty accurate straight off,
Mama Cass sadly died at the young age of 32 in 1974 not long after completing a 2 week engagement at the London Palladium😢, she died in her sleep from heart failure while still in London, the only one still alive today is the other female singer Michelle Phillips who I believe is around 79 yrs old now, her ex husband and fellow band member John Phillips died from heart failure in 2001 and the lead singer Denny Doherty passed away at the age of 66 in 2007, such a great loss of talented musicians RIP.
It's a flute BUT it's an Alto flute not a normal one ( it plays in a lower register ) . If you really want to hear a flute you need to check out JETHRO TULL - either " Locomotive Breath " or " The Witches Promise " but pick a live version
Cass Elliott was the matriarch of Laurel Canyon in the late '60s and early '70s, when all the rock songs lived there. Frank and Gail Zappa were the moral center. He was the rock star of the era who didn't do drugs.
If you want to hear of one the most beautiful, iconic voices of all time, listen to Karen Carpenter of the Carpenters, whom I believe had 17 top 20 hits in the 1970s/1980s. She is documented by computer to have perfect pitch, soulful, low register voice that still mesmerizes people to this day. She tragically died at the age of 32 due to cardiac complications of anorexia nervosa. Start with either "Close to You" (she plays the drums), "Rainy Days and Mondays", or "Superstar". Voted #94 of the 100 Greatest Voices of All Time by Rolling Stone
The guy on the right and the woman on the left were married. Their child Chynna Phillips went on to form the group Wilson Phillips with two daughters of one of the Beach Boys.
You guys need to check out their daughters group Wilson-Phillips …… Wilson which is the daughter of a Beach Boy … and Phillips is the daughter of Mama’s and Papa’s
The most beautiful flute was played in a live Elvis performance by one of your brothers...LI VE version of An American Trilogy...............ihe whole performance is a m a z i n g.
If you’d like to hear another flute solo…. Please listen to a U.K. band called, Jethro Tull…’Thick as a brick’ and listen to a live version. The lead singer, Ian Anderson, is a real character and performer…he plays flute solo on it. Amazing song….originally about 45 minutes long….they do a short version for their stage show. Very entertaining.
It's and alto (lower tone, larger) flute. The only one still alive is Michelle Phillips. Cass Elliot (Moma Cass) died at 32 years old in 1974 of a heart attack. Denny Doherty died at 66 in 2007 (he is the shorter male vocalist). John Phillips died at 65 in 2001. As the taller vocalist John also played guitar and was the mastermind of the group; he put the group together and as Moma Cass put it "wrote all of their songs and most of the songs they stole". In my opinion Mama Cass and Denny Doherty were the most talented in the group (as vocalists), they could sing anything!
The larger lady, Moma Cass, was the same woman you saw sitting front stage during Janis Joplin's Ball and Chain performance.
I was gonna say that! lol She was blown away by Janis!
Their masterpiece
Mama Cass heart of group
If you want more flute try out Jethro Tull. The lead singer, Ian Anderson is also a flutist
Locomotive Breath 👍
Flautist 😁
Cass Elliott died at the age of 32
Mama Cass used to say that, when they were all perfectly in tune, they created a fifth voice in their harmonies.
In singing, that's called an overtone
If you really want more of
FLUTE ( traversal)

I recommend you this group
JETRO TULL

Another great hit by the Mamas and the Papas was MONDAY MONDAY. The blond girl on the far left is Michelle Phillips. She became an actress in the 1980s. The other woman, Cass Elliot (“Mama Cass”) died very young.
The little brown haired guy not only wrote and produced their music, he worked with each member on how to exactly sing their part. He was a genius
Wow
The blond had a daughter that was in pop group Wilson Phillips. Check out the song Hold On. Other two girls in that group, their Dad was in The Beach Boys.
3 passed… the blonde is in her 80s I guess and was always hot.
One of the guys had a daughter... And it's best not to look much farther than that

Great
@@christopherking4932 Knights in White Satin by Moody Blues is a badass one with a flute solo too.
@@angelone1839 Oh yeah that's a great song as well
Phenomenal harmony on this group!!!
Also listen to Moody Blues, “ Nights in White Satin “ if you want to hear more flute.
Flute sounded sublime, nice touch.
Nights In White Satin has a great flute solo, also Heart and Traffic used quite often.
The blonde, Michelle Phillips was a regular on a TV show called Knots Landing. She's the mother of the blonde lady from Wilson Phillips.
Like ya'll are open minded. The world needs more opened minded young peeps.✌
This was what we called groovy music back in the day. 😄
Auto-tune back then was the producer: "You came in flat again, do another take", love the studio acoustics from that era, those cool plate reverbs
Yeah sweet haunting music, sweet dreams of days ago. Take me back warm summers days .listening to all the great music 🎶 Thanks
Michelle Phillips never lost her beauty even in her later years!!!! I had a mad crush on her as a young boy!!!!

Love your reactions. Sadly, Mama Cass passed away in the 70's. She was an incredible talent.
It's called 'harmonizing'. Being in harmony. Sadly, three of them are gone.
I you want to hear flute solos, go check out Jethro Tull.
Whenever I hear this I have to turn it up really loud. It is so catchy and uplifting
Love them. I was born in 1962 and I love the music from the 60's and 70's. You should check out Paul Davis "I go crazy" and Redbone "Come and get your Love".

Hugely popular group while I was in HS .. this song iconic
Best flute solo… Moody Blues- Nights in White Satin… check out the live version. It’s amazing!
If you ever watched Theodore Tugboat as a kid, the person singing the lead parts on this song, Denny Doherty, played the harbour master on that show.
All time classic! ♥ Flute solos were a 60s/early 70s thing. Someone should bring that back ;)
You guys should check out Bob Dylan sometime! I'd start with Tangled Up In Blue. Just make sure to do the studio version!
Suggest their "Monday, Monday". Always great harmonies.
Very perceptive of strong HARMONY in the 60’s. For voices. And for people. What an ideal era!!! Thinking pop singers with a hippie flute make a lasting CLASSIC!
This is 4 part harmony with counterpoints. You don't see this hardly ever anymore. They did it perfectly!
Lots of flute on Jethro Tull's "Living In The Past" and the Moody Blues' "Nights In White Satin" -- both from 1972.
Mama Cass was an amazing singer with a very interesting but tragic story
Nights in white satin by the Moody Blues has a lovely flute solo. The live performance is awesome
These guys started as folk musicians in NY...they were high AF here. Mama, John, and Denny have all passed.
You two should really listen to Cass Elliot alone. She's the shorter woman. An amazing voice. She died in 1974. RIP My kids and I used to play this album every Saturday for house cleaning. i heard this song high asl with some friends skate boarding last summer lmao this song issa mood
Some more Mamas and Papas song suggestions - "This is dedicated to the one i love", "Monday Monday", "I saw her again".
If you enjoyed the flute, may I suggest one of the greatest songs, nights in White Satin by Moody blues.
Jethro Tull features the flute (Ian Anderson). Moody Blues as well..."Nights in White Satin".
1965 The Beatles "You've got to hide your Love away" .... John Scott Flute solo!
Do a shot every time you say "know what I'm saying". Always drunk as fuck watching your videos. LMAO
Jethro Tull - "Locomotive Breath" for a rock band flute solo!
I loved riding in the car and hearing this on the radio.
My God. From the band Jethro Tull. Live at the Isle of Wight concert. You won't forget seeing the flute ever
Personally, I believe Mama Cass had the talent in the group! You definitely need to hear Jethro Tull. Locomotive Breath and Crosseyed Mary in that order. They have some flute in most of their songs. Aqualung is another good song of theirs. Ian Anderson is a musical genius.
For me mamas and the papas harmony was better than the Beatles ❤❤❤

The momas and the papa's are a great group back in 1966,also year I was born ❤️
Here's a couple of other songs with impressive flute solos--The long version of the Moody Blues' NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN amd in Clannad's TURNING TIDE.
Cass Elliot had the voice of an angel. RIP beautiful lady
When you reacted to Janis Joplin ball and Chain- the woman with her mouth open saying "WOW" is Mamma Cass- the heavy woman in this group
Such a perfect song, I don’t care who you are or what genre you listen to. ❤️🔥
Listen to Mama Cass Dream a Little Dream. Mama Cass 1974 and John Phillips (tall one) 2001, Dougherty 2007 have passed away. Michelle blonde hair is only survivor.
Marshall Tucker Band "Can't You See" has a great flute solo
During this era, electronics and synthesizers were still being developed, so most music was still played on instruments and real vocals.
Here's some trivia. The blonde and the guy with the guitar (Michelle & John Phillips) are the parents of Chyna Phillips, whose band Wilson Phillips is the one that plays in the wedding scene on the movie "Bridesmaids."

Nights in White Satin - The Moody Blues - in Paris. Restored video!. Promotional film from 1967 with a flute solo.
As you're on this journey, remember that autotune wasn't even invented until 1997, so any singer before that was pure talent.

I can't believe so many people haven't ever heard this most 60's ICONIC song.
Jethro Tull plays a flute like a madman Moody Blues uses flutes too and ELO also
They're doing a kind of call-and-response here, repeating each line. Considering that there aren't that many lyrics to it, it becomes a way to get more out of the song and as a device its energy works really well.
Jethro Tull's lead singer also plays the flute. It features a lot in their music.

That cool flute solo was played by jazzman Bud Shank.
Chynna Phillips has a you tube account and her mother Michelle appears on it sometimes 🤗 california dreamin
