John Phillips wrote "Monday, Monday" in 20 minutes. Michelle Phillips hated the song and didn't want to record it. The result: It knocked the Rascals' "Good Lovin'" off of the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and won the 1966 Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
They were magical musically. Their personal lives were a train wreck....like everyone. They broke up in 1971. The only surviving member is Michelle Phillips (the blonde), who went on to become an actress.
Imagine for a second having Mamma Cass Elliot and Michelle Phillips singing back up for you. The talent on that stage is worth 1000 seasons of The Voice.
They were HUGE in their day ....couldn't find any musical variety show that didn't have the Ms and Ps on at least once a season ..Great harmonies .It was the era of Flower Power , Haight Ashury in Frisco .!!!!
California Dreaming was another big hit of theirs. I was supposed to be seeing Mama Cass ( the short) one at a Night Club in Sheffield ( UK) in the early 70’s (she went Solo and had a great voice) but she died in London the night previously RIP Cass Elliott ( Mama Cass)
This was popular when I was in college in the 60s. It’s always been one of my favorites. I started singing alto as a sophomore in my HS glee club. From that time on I became a major fan of harmony and this group is a hallmark of harmony!!
I love the mamas and the papas. As a rule I am thankful for each and every day. However, Mondays can sometimes turn into a crap shoot. But, no matter what, God chooses to bless us with another day and it is up to us with his help to handle whatever comes along. On a Monday last November I woke up that monrning feeling apprehensive I had to go to the doctor. Went to the appointment and got a really good report. Was feeling great and had been home almost an hour when my dad was killed in an auto accident. As shocked and hurt as I was that showed me more than anything not to waste time on fear, worrying about things that you have no control over. That is why God tells us he didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of love, power and a sound mind. As always wonderful reaction you two. I never miss any of your videos. No matter what kind of day I am having I always feel better after watching your videos.
Mamas and Papas are great people! My sister and I sing along with their songs in the car when I go visit. She was a professional musician... Bass player and singer... And we grew up singing these songs! Mel has a spectacular voice, too!! 😃💋💖💋💖😎🍿😎🎶🎵🎶🎶🎤
Evidently when John Phillips (guy in white shirt), wrote Monday Monday the others in the group refused to sing it, saying it was a stupid song, but eventually he prevailed on them to record it.
The Mamas & the Papas were a great folk rock group in the 60's. I had their records. They were known for their smooth harmonies. They had lots of great hits such as "Words Of Love", "Dancing In The Street", "Look Through My Window", "Creeque Alley", "Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon)", "Safe In My Garden", "I Saw Her Again" etc. Mama Cass Elliot went solo & had a big hit with "Dream A Little Dream Of Me".
Sometimes it's difficult to watch these older videos seeing Mama Cass and how she went solo and her back story including her very early death. Other than Michelle Phillips, they are all gone. Their harmonies are some of the greatest that very few can match. Another song about Monday is the Carpenter's "Rainy Days and Mondays", which if you haven't done really should.
Amen sista Mel! I praise God for the gift of life each day, I try not to take any one for granted because I don't know if it's the last one that I will be given. Thanks for your encouragement and reminder to always give thanks!
Mel is so right when she says thank God for each day and all th days, not to hate any one of them. To be grateful to God for each one. God bless you both! Peace be with you!
Vocal harmonies are unmatched, except for..........if you wanna hear their black counterparts, check out THE 5TH DIMENSION "Up, Up & Away" from 1967. One Of The Greatest Pop Songs EVER.
For the FIRST TIME EVER, someone else has echoed my sentiments about The 5th Dimension! I've said since forever that they were like the black Mamas & Papas, and actually better in my opinion. It's nice to know I'm not alone in that assessment. 😎👍✌☮
If you listen real closely to California Dreamin you can hear Barry McGuire faintly singing the first line on the record before the song starts. Barry had recorded it when he brought the Mama's and the Papas to the studio to introduce them to his producer, Lou Adler. Adler liked them so much he took a copy of Barry's recording, erased his voice and had the Mamas and the Papas record a new vocal track. Only it didn't erase his voice cleanly. Lou released it that way anyway for the single and their first album. He even released it before he released Barry's version. They only sang on that song Barry is on piano, PF Sloane on the guitar and the "wrecking crew" did the rest.
@@garyarnett1220 It was written by John and Michelle. But they told Barry he could record it. They didn't have a record yet so Barry told them to come to the studio so they could meet Lou Adler, which they did. And he signed them and the first thing he did was had them record that one song over Barry's tracks. All they added was the flute from a flute player. They recruited a jazz flute player from another studio down the hall, but who recruited him depends on which story is true, both PF Sloane and Denny Doherty claimed to have. There's pretty good info on it at songfacts.
An interesting followup would be "I Don't Like Mondays" by the Boomtown Rats. Rather a different vibe, though. I always got the feeling that they had met on Sunday and had a single amazing night, and then she went out for cigarettes and never came back. There's something about his naively desperate sadness that speaks of a thunderbolt, a love that was very sudden and just as suddenly gone.
I Might Be Wrong That Being Said What Happened ON Friday?🙄 Then On Monday Here's You're Folder Get IT DONE Tuesday Maybe By Wendy's We'll Do IT Again FRIDAY 😉🙄😉🤣😂🌟💎🏅🌹💝 BLESS YOU STAY WELL 🙏 RESPECT 💯🎯🏆💎
Michelle and John were married and had 2 daughters, McKenzie Phillips of One day at a time with Valerie Bertinelli and another daughter Chynna Phillips who is married to Billy Baldwin, Michelle and Chynna are 1/2 sisters
This seems so normal and obvious now but this just wasn’t a part of pop music before they hit. A mixed sex harmony vocal group where no one was the specific lead? Tell me who hit before them with that. They had the alpha and omega of good and evil, from John’s ultimately heinous personal crimes, to everyone’s friend and comfort, Cass Elliott. If you tried to argue that there wouldn’t have been a laurel canyon “sound” without her putting people together and hosting parties for all of them, you’d have a pretty decent case. So this group is super seminal in rock history, though they’re not really rock and only were around a couple years. Oh! They also put on Monterey Pop which was kinda supposed to be their headlining vehicle, but a whole host of epic performances took place and the summer of love was born.
Cass Elliot was the powerhouse of the Mamas and Papas. Her voice was an incredible instrument.
I Saw Her Again. So nice.
The group only lasted 2 1/2 years, but their impact lingers to this day. Quite a legacy.
I love The Mamas and The Papas. Beautiful harmonies.
That Denny Doherty guy had a wicked set of pipes. They all did.
Before my time, but he was a great singer.

John being an incestual child abuser is more than run of the mill dysfunction but yeah.
Wasn’t she on Dallas? LoL
No, but she was on Star Trek.@@aks4204
I love this song!!! I used to be obsessed with their other song “California Dreamin”
Thanks for this one guys. I NEVER paid attention to the words of this song. And I like this group.

On an uptempo song, Cass couldn't keep her feet still. Love her 🎶🎵💚

I’d like to suggest “Go Where You Wanna Go” as your next M&P reaction. The song can currently be heard on a TV commercial for a phone provider.
I love this song. Denny Doherty has that silky silky voice.
