My aunt and my mother this is their day, same age as the band members. In 1964 my aunt was a senior in HS she saw the Beatles play Philly and I’m jealous. I’m a year older than this song, lol..

True, the only one of the group to branch out to a solo career . But John Phillips didn't want her in the group because he was perpetually fat shaming her.
I play all sorts of metal and psychedelic shit but yeah the 60s is where it all started. You can’t beat good pop music tbh. It’s just catchy. And back in the day it was made by actual talent.
These guys were best known for beautiful harmonies. Mama Cass Elliot was an amazing vocalist and, in many ways, carried the vocals for the whole group. Great reaction. You two are adorable. 🥰🌺✌️

We are all here to learn and love and reminisce on come good music. I remember this song playing in the car when I was 5 yrs old and Mom was taking me to Kindergarten. Needless to say, I've always loved this song!

I thank all of you reactors for playing the sound track of our lives. It was a special time. We can close our eyes and relive our youth. Wish I could rewind my body!
Mama Cass was considered the touchstone of the sixties folk rock community in LA. She threw the best parties, and introduced the musicians of several super groups in her living room.
DEFINITELY check out Cass Elliot on her own -- magnificent voice and clear as a bell. Art Garfunkel was like the male version of her. And that flute solo is well-known among flute players -- thanks to legendary session player Bud Shank.
This song was composed in the early 60s by John (tall guy with the guitar) and Michelle Phillips (woman on the left), husband and wife. The were in NYC in the winter playing some other gig (before the Mama's and Papa's was formed), and it started to snow. Being from L.A., Michelle had never seen snow, so they went for a walk. Not realizing how cold it was, they "stopped into a church [they] passed along the way", for the sole reason of getting warm. Needing a reason for entering the church, they "got down on [their] knees and...pretend to pray". When they returned to their apartment, they wrote the song together. When they returned to L.A., they gave the song to Barry McGuire ("Eve of Destruction") in 1963, but his version never took off. Later, when they formed the M and P's, they released the song as a single from their first album in 1965. The song shot to the top of the charts, and the rest is history. If you haven't already done so, you might react to Angelina's version of this classic pop song: ua-cam.com/video/EBI7Km3z7-U/v-deo.html It is an Absolute MASTERPIECE!!! This song was one of the top hits of 1966. The follow-up hit they released was "Monday Monday," which is also worth a listen. As for the whole "Mamas and Papas" thing, you might be surprised to learn of a group called Wilson-Phillips, which is comprised of three women -- Carnie and Wendy Wilson, the daughters of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, and Carnie Phillips, the daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and Papas. Huge in the late 60’s early 70’s a folk rock group from the iconic singers and songwriters eta.. love them then when I was 20 makes me 70 something now still love the sound and the memories it evokes.
In ‘66 I was 16 and I can tell you they were soooo popular. They were as California as it gets. had the groove had the sound. Listen to the song Creque Alley for their story. Mama Cass perfect pitch and amazing voice the true leader. The instrumental was none other than the Wrecking Crew. That studio session band was as good as it gets…Carol Kane played the bass guitar.
my fav group from back then - takes me back to my hippie days - I am 74 & I still listen to them & it takes me back & makes me smile - a smile!!!! another M&P song!!!
A little insight into why "The Mamas and the Papas" - you got the groovy part of this, and this was very much the days of the Hippies Mamas and papas were how hippies referred to women and men, not just mothers and fathers Great reaction. As a little aside, I just love when my kids and g-kids bring new songs to me - and I surprise them by singing (badly) the lyrics of the covers of some of these good ole classic oldies lol
The band were watching TV where someone was interviewing some Hell's Angels. One of the Angels said, "We call our women 'Mamas!'" Cass Elliot said, "We've got Mamas in our group!", so that made the guys in the band The Papas. Check out their 'Dedicated to the one I love' or Cass Elliot's solo hit 'It's getting better'.

Your listening to one of the greatest acts in history! This is one of their worldwide smash hits! They easily took their place in a decade of legends! Only Michelle Phillips is survived!
Michelle Phillips is an all-time snack in her day. just breathtakingly stunning, I'd take her at this age vs just about any woman today. nevermind considering how beautifully she aged. she is the definition of Glow Up.
I got news for 1 of the commanters all though they are all very good singers the lead singer Denny Doughrety is hands down the best singer in this group, been listening to them for years and he just recently passed away.
The blonde girl and guitar player are John & Michelle Philips. The are the parents of singer Chynna Phillips from Wilson Philips (along with Carnie & Wendy Wilson, daughters of Brian Wilson from The Beach Boys.). They are also the parents of MacKenzie Phillips, who was an actress like Michelle and played on a long running sitcom from 1975 - 1984. Very talented family!
Wilson Phillips, HUGE! in Pop music during the 90s with hit Hold On. Wilson Phillips is an American pop group formed in Los Angeles in 1989. The group consists of Carnie and Wendy Wilson, the daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, and Chynna Phillips, the daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas & the Papas.
Apparently. the story is that they came back from a vacation to the Bahamas after beginning to experience a little success in New York's Greenwich Village "folk revival scene" of the first half of the 1960s to discover all the artists they knew there had been signed to record company contracts and moved to L.A. where the industry had moved to, and Michelle Phillips (the thin blonde one) tells John Phillips (soon to be her husband) that "it's too cold here, we need to move to L.A. with everyone else." Which they did, and where they recorded this GIANT hit (and others) for themselves. Supposedly, the lyrics are very nearly a transcription of what she said to him when they got back to NY in the winter of 1965 to find themselves cold and alone, with everyone else having gone.
Probably out in 66 or 67. Short lived group but many hit songs. Very successful in less than 3 years. Denny Doherty in a vest singing was a great singer Mama Cass had success as a solo artist also. Many timeless very good songs
I grew up in the 60's and heard all of these groups. I can honestly say that was the best time to grow up and listen to music. You would have loved it.
And The Grass Roots have so Much great songs a few to get you going (Temptations eyes) or ( live for today) or (midnight confession ) and they just keep going great songs
I love you two so much!!❤❤❤ Thank you for doing this song. I grew up listening to the Mamas and the Papas! Mama Cass unfortunately choked to death after swallowing a chicken bone. Rest in peace our sweet Bauboo😢😢❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The blonde female, Michelle Phillips, went on to have a supporting role on the TV series Knots Landing; and more recently has acted on several Hallmark Christmas movies. The shorter dark haired guy, John Phillips--married to Michelle-- is the father of Makenzie Phillips from One Day at a Time TV show. Michelle is Makenzei'e step mom.

The Mama's and the Papas have an entire catalog of hits. Infact... You should really check out the red DVD " California Dreaming. The songs of the Mama's and Papa's.
You were probably told this already by now: when the four came together they considered to call the band Magic Cyrcle, but then Cass Elliot heard this story that members of the Hells Angels called their wifes or girlfriends Mamas and she said: hey we got Mamas and Papas in our band, too. And so they called themselves The Mamas and the Papas.
The thin mama Michelle Phillips is the mother of Chynna Phillips of the group Wilson Phillips the Wilsons are the daughters of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys Michelle Phillips is also the stepmother Mackenzie Phillips star of the situation comedy one-day-at-a-time
@@handsome-brute2666 True Story. She's spoken extensively about their affair. I don't think she would lie about something like that. She talked about doing drugs as an 11 year old child with famous musicians and Hollywood stars. Crazy life.
John Phillips in the blue shirt started the band. His wife is the blonde her name is Michelle. They were in NYC hating the weather being from LA. The church in question is St Patrick’s Cathedral, Michelle went inside and John waited outside. John and Michelle wrote the song together.
Composed by John & Michelle Phillips in the winter of '64 when they were in NYC, suffering with the cold. They joined forces with Cass Elliott & tenor lead voice Denny Doherty, to form the group. They had no name, but came up with what they did as they signed their record contract.. December of '64, January of '65, this was what was called back then : Folk-Rock. -----------MJL< 75 y/o
I think reactions are best when a person has absolutely no preconcieved notion of what the group/artist does, that way it becomes a truly blind reaction 💞
The guy singing the lead parts is Denny Doherty. He later played the Harbor Master in the childrens show Theodore Tugboat. They got their name while watching a documentary about bikers and their ladies, who they called Mamas and the 2 women said "Thats us, we are Mamas so you must be Papas"

And he was the no-nonsense PE teacher (and history teacher) that was really cute, but very strict & serious. which made him all the hotter. Cass Eliott, aka mama Cass , what a precious human being, sleep tight sister, ❤❤❤
You two are delightful. Don't feel bad about not knowing this group. You're young! I have never heard of you two, but I am happy this video popped up.
I like you two and I am glad that you gave this tune a shot.
I was 7 or 8 when this song came out, so I have loved this music for over 50 years, yeah I'm old.
I look forward to hearing more from you.
One of the most iconic tracks of the 60s. In the top 10 of the decade for sure.
A little insight into why "The Mamas and the Papas" - you got the groovy part of this, and this was very much the days of the Hippies
Mamas and papas were how hippies referred to women and men, not just mothers and fathers
Great reaction. As a little aside, I just love when my kids and g-kids bring new songs to me - and I surprise them by singing (badly) the lyrics of the covers of some of these good ole classic oldies lol
Hahahahaha....How ridiculous. Make up another one!
@@fidge54 perhaps you have the true meaning behind The Mama's and the Papas, apart from 'make up another one'?
More commonly, "my old man" and "my old lady."
This is Epic and Legendary! Love it. Cannot replace true blessed talent.
Oh H yeah … my older sister had this album & we played the (bleep) out of it! This is a such a vibe! THX’s love this & ♥️ yawl
Edit- Asia & Bj sayin Ty Mama & Papa.. aw!
Listening to this song, walking through the freezing streets of Delhi in December , going to my construction site , sweet memories ❣️✨
All time classic! Nobody does flute solos anymore ;)
Except Ian Anderson......
Lol, gotta love it.
Karl Denson is the most contemporary flutist I know.
Check it out

White Stripes Seven Nations Army of coarse.
This song is an absolute classic! Glad you guys enjoyed it! 😄
And when they're really wailing. Michelle & Cass are sailing. Hey, they really nail me to the wall.
PP&M
I got news for 1 of the commanters all though they are all very good singers the lead singer Denny Doughrety is hands down the best singer in this group, been listening to them for years and he just recently passed away.
the women are singing what we call "counterpoint". The vocals, the melody, the flute solo are just extraordinary.
Mamma Cass Elliot is the bomb. Etc. she does Leaving on a jet plane with John Denver. A must hear
4 part counterpoint harmony is very rare to hear but this is what they're divinely performing here! Angels singing!
This was the music of my youth--we were soooo damned lucky as a generation in regard to the quality of our music!!!
Denny Doherty in a vest singing was a great singer
Mama Cass had success as a solo artist also. Many timeless very good songs
Don't worry about what you don't know ... we didn't know either until we heard the music we weren't born knowing it..... just enjoy the music.
I grew up in the 60's and heard all of these groups. I can honestly say that was the best time to grow up and listen to music. You would have loved it.
Hands down my favorite song from the 60’s.
And The Grass Roots have so Much great songs a few to get you going (Temptations eyes) or ( live for today) or (midnight confession ) and they just keep going great songs
He is great singer. And so are the girls. All are great singers.
I was Always dreamin, going down a road somwhere in california, into the evening sun, in an old convertable listening tobthis Song. Unfortunatly I live in Germany, an gasoline ist Like close to 2 Euro a liter. You need check your bank account before going more than 100 miles.
Have you guys done Norman Greenbaums "Spirit in the sky"? That was my jam when i was in 5th grade. I had that little 45 record.
Mama Cass was the Talent of the Mamas and Papas … check out her voice on Dream a Little Dream of Me ….
1965 - 66 The Mama's and the Papas were right in the to middle of the flower power movement out in San Francisco. "Great ! Fantastic ! Harmonies." Don't stop with California Dreaming.
You both are great and I think it’s awesome you react to old classic songs and you’re not expected to know these old groups ❤️
All time classic song . Beloved one band!
Such a classic; such a vibe, never gets old. Those harmonies ❤️✌️
The thin mama Michelle Phillips is the mother of Chynna Phillips of the group Wilson Phillips the Wilsons are the daughters of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys Michelle Phillips is also the stepmother Mackenzie Phillips star of the situation comedy one-day-at-a-time
and Michelle Phillips became an actress as well. co-stared in several TV series.
And McKenzie was sleeping with her father at 18 years old. It went on for years.
Mackenzie was boning HER own father😒😳😳😳
@@handsome-brute2666 True Story. She's spoken extensively about their affair. I don't think she would lie about something like that. She talked about doing drugs as an 11 year old child with famous musicians and Hollywood stars. Crazy life.
@@jefflast9489 even Mick Jagged said he WANTED her SINCE she was about 10 years old..but him being WHITE..he wasnt ostracized like R.Kelly for it!😤😳😒
They have so clean faces. Clean pure faces. Like innocent pure village people.
John Phillips in the blue shirt started the band.
His wife is the blonde her name is Michelle.
They were in NYC hating the weather being from LA.
The church in question is St Patrick’s Cathedral, Michelle went inside and John waited outside.
John and Michelle wrote the song together.
Incredible harmonies , I can see it in your eyes how much you are both enjoying it and grooving ! 😊
Love this channel. It’s cool to see a younger generation discover older music.
The guy in the blue shirt and the blonde had kids that became famous singers in the early 90's!!
Such an iconic song if you grew up in the 60', 70's. Great reaction.
Words of Love, and Creeque Alley are two great songs that y'all would probably like
Well, now they're old enough to be your great grandparents. Three of them have passed away. you guys are SO much fun to watch!! (my fave is reaction-to-silence-of-the-lambs...scared ME). you DON'T interrupt alot with needless comments...thanks. also, her laugh is fantastic and real, and will make you smile. and he is about as handsome & smart, as it can get. both are reserved just enough, and listen to each other intently, and with a quiet chemistry between them. they remind me of two african american teachers in 1971 in Minneapolis, ,who had just started teaching, as we were just starting high school, 9th grade She was my gorgeous and patient typing teacher that I adored. And he was the no-nonsense PE teacher (and history teacher) that was really cute, but very strict & serious. which made him all the hotter.
I recall that she had moved there from St Louis, and he was from Chicago. They were married by the end of my senior year, 4 yrs later !! Thanks again for the fun intelligent entertainment !!
Another Groovy toon from the Flower Power generation ✌️
😁
There are some songs that feel like they are etched on the sky for all time and echo across generations. This is one of them.
