Coming of age in the 60s, California Dreamin' is part of the DNA of our lives. The flute solo is by Bud Shank. Another song with a great flute solo is "Undun" by The Guess Who - the vocals and flute are performed exquisitely by Burton Cummings.
Speaking of Burton, his solo tune 'I'm Scared' is the second best 'went into a church just to get warm' song - I mean it's not exactly a crowded genre, but still...
Cass Elliot was an amzing singer. It was a real loss to music when she died. If you want flute, try the Moody Blues. Ray Thomas was super on "Nights in White Satin" .
Always loved this song, ever since it came out. I love their harmonies, and Mama Cass has such a beautiful, clear, unique voice.❤ Thanks so much for the reaction, guys! If you want to hear some phenomenal flute playing, check out the band Jethro Tull!! They are especially entertaining and enjoyable to watch live, and the lead singer, Ian Anderson is a fantastic flute player!
Oh yes, I would love to see them react/review Jethro Tull, they are something special. Aqualung or Locomotive Breath would be good songs to react to, but they have so many great songs.
My wife grew up in SoCal, and didn't ever see snow until she was 30 years old when we went to Utah. Watching the look on her face as it fell and stuck and grew, is a memory I still treasure.
Sorry, but there's no way someone could live in SoCal even one winter and not see snow, let alone 30 years. I grew up in the Midwest and have lived in SoCal for ten years. My relatives back east ask me if I miss snow in the winter, and I say nope, if I want to see snow in the winter all I have to do is look up, and there it is on the mountains, all the snow I want to see. Several times during the winter the mountains around L.A. are snow covered, and it's not unusual for us to get at least one winter storm where the snow level gets down onto the foothills or even into the valleys. Last winter at our elevation we had a 4" snowfall that stayed on the ground for about 48 hours. So anyone in SoCal can see snow just about anytime they want in the winter, and be standing knee deep in it within an hour or so if desired. Just get in the car and drive up the hill to Idyllwild, Big Bear, or Arrowhead, then when you get tired of it, drive back down the hill and you don't have to deal with it. I don't do that, however, because I've seen enough snow to last me a lifetime, but I could. A quick Google shows pages of SoCal snow scene photos from over the years - www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&q=photo%20of%20LA%20with%20snow%20in%20the%20background&tbs=imgo:1#imgrc=jiwLe2RkZDqECM
I'm a California native that lived in Louisville for 24 years. I had left Cali, and the Family to launch out on my own. I came to KY in 1983 not knowing a soul. Driving back from work in Bardstown one December afternoon, this song came on the radio. It pulled at my heartstrings a bit, and inspired me to reconnect with my family. That simple incident had a domino effect that led me to move back to Nevada in 2007, to run the family business. It all started with this haunting song, and brown leaves on a cold and grey Kentucky winter's day.
M&P had SOOOO many INCREDIBLE hits- you guys should cover them some more. Mama Cass solo, too. Her songs were so uplifting and positive. Saw Her Standing There, Creeque Alley, It's Getting Better, Words of Love. Cass did a great duet with John Denver w/ "Leaving on a Jet Plane", too.
Those of us born pre-‘70’s, will always identify with the opening chords of this song. It will always transport us to an extinct time and place….Except in our memories.
went to California from London in 1979 and I have strong memories of life there then including seeing 75 year old Women driving Yellow Sports Cars and the Mid-Late 1960s era is how I will always picture California...
John and Michelle Phillips daughter was Chynna Phillips of the group Wilson Phillips. John Phillips had another daughter Mackenzie Phillips who was in the sitcom One Day At A Time.
I grew up in Los Angeles in the 1960's when this song came out. My parents took my up to the mountains and we stayed in a cabin and I saw snow for the first time when I was 5 years old.
Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson played many flute solos in their music Their album 'Aqualung' is just brilliant. Be hard to pick my favourite song from that album☮️
The flute solo was played by Bud Shank, one of the leading West Coast Jazz sax players of the time. Flute was his second (or third) instrument. I think he started by taking clarinet lessons as a kid. Shank got a lot of work as a session guy on pop records to supplement his jazz career.
This song makes me feel very nostalgic. Beautiful harmonies and sound. They had so many hits that are worth exploring. Thanks guys for posting this one!

I was in L.A. a few years ago, visiting my Uncle and taking our son to Universal Studios...I live in Northern California, closer to Sacramento. I get up Super early, went from the hotel to the diner to get some coffee at 4am. A guy came out of the diner (I was outside having my coffee at 4am) and he said, "It's so cold, do you think it's going to snow?" I wanted to laugh so hard.... it was 52 degrees. I told him, "No, it's not. I live where my car gets frozen over all the time I can hardly open my car door. This is warm." He said, "I can't even imagine that". LMAO! It shows that L.A. is so different from everywhere else.
This is a stalwart of the 60s. There are very few songs that people around the world can point to exactly what decade they represent like this one. Kudos on doing this song.
Native Californian born in 1960. California back then was a quite different place than it is now. It was the land of dreams. There were millions of people moving there from all over the country for the good paying plentiful jobs, affordable real estate (homes were cheaper here than back east), nice weather (along the coast) and a chance to start over. There were only half as many people as there are now. Plus politically it was much more balanced (Ronald Reagan was governor). So yeah, California Dreaming was definitely a real thing. Its a bit shocking to see how much its changed in my lifetime. Not for the better imo.
True, I haven't seen snow in over 20 years, and we had to drive up a mountain for that. We just had a decent-sized earthquake last night, too. Home, sweet home. I used to sing along with this as a teenager.
Back in the 60s and 70s most music was stripped down and organic for sure. Peoples voices and their ability to sing harmony like that without autotune was just amazing. That’s what made the music back then so very incredible…👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
One of daughter of this group with two sisters ( daughters of the group Beach Boys ) created “ Wilson Phillips” a recognised group of music by songs like “ Hold on”
Thank you for saying many nice things about this song. I’m from the 60s generation and it made me feel good that a younger generation (like you) likes this song and says intelligent, positive things.
Jethro Tull had a lot of flute in their songs. Ian Anderson was a great flautist, especially considering he never had any formal training in flute playing.
Many know this yet don't realize it, John and Michelle's daughter joined with a pair of sisters she grew up with, Brian Wilsons daughters, to form Wilson Phillips
The Mamas and The Papas had harmony in spades! Their first four albums are their best without even one bad track amongst them. And you can take that to the bank!! And remember, I told you so.
Jethro Tull has the flute...Aqualung, Sorry Locomotive Breath. There is a version with an orchestra where he plays the flute on Aqualung. The flute solo is in Locomotive Breath though. Got them mixed up. You want flute though, Ian is the man.
Agreed, according to Makenzie, his daughter, when she was in her early teens he got her hooked on drugs (that part is undisputed). What is disputed is het claim that he started an affair with her.
John Phillips was a horrible human being, but he definitely had huge musical talent. He not only wrote most of the band's hits, but he also was a great vocal arranger - his harmonies were rich and exquisite.
The Phillips' daughters are in the band Wilson Phillips. You need to react to their 1990 hit "Hold On" it's very inspiring. daughter Chynna is an actress too, very attractive woman.
A great song with a flute solo is by Chicago called Colour my world. It was a wedding staple for many years after it was released as a single. You should do a reaction to that. Terry Kath sings lead on it! The bass line sounds like a stand up bass and is fantastic! Amazing song!
The Mamas & the Papas were a folk rock vocal group formed in Los Angeles, California, which recorded and performed from 1965 to 1968. The group was a defining force in the music scene of the counterculture of the 1960s. The group consisted of Americans John Phillips, Cass Elliot, and Michelle Phillips and Canadian Denny Doherty. Their sound was based on vocal harmonies arranged by John Phillips, the songwriter, musician, and leader of the group, who adapted folk to the new beat style of the early 1960s. The Mamas & the Papas released five studio albums and 17 singles over four years, six of which made the Billboard top 10, and have sold close to 40 million records worldwide. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 for its contributions to the music industry. The band reunited briefly to record the album People Like Us in 1971 but had ceased touring and performing by that time. Some of their most popular singles include "California Dreamin'", "Monday, Monday", and "Dedicated to the One I Love". Wilson Phillips is an American pop group formed in Los Angeles in 1989. The group consists of Chynna Phillips, the daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas & the Papas and Carnie Wilson and Wendy Wilson, the daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. Their 1990 eponymous debut album sold over 10 million copies worldwide and included five major US hit singles, four of which went Top 10 (three of those to number one) on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1990, the group won the Billboard Music Award for Hot 100 Single of the Year for their song "Hold On", and was nominated for five Grammy Awards and two American Music Awards.
Jethro Tull!! If you want a flute in a rock song, try some Jethro Tull. The lead singer and flute player, Ian Anderson, is most energetic flute player ever, watch some videos of him dancing across the stage on one leg while playing the flute.
We all know what band you guys need to listen too where the flute is at the front, don't we? Jethro Tull, babies! Get yourselves some Locomotive Breath!
The album cover over your heads was once rare to see. The fist records issued looked like that, but someone decided that showing the toilet was not right. So they put a sticker on all of the album covers. If you tried to remove the sticker, it ruined the image of the toilet. As a result, an album showing the toilet became very collectible.
Groovy choice, fellas! I consider “California Dreamin’” the national anthem of the 60’s. It’s especially poignant to hear it when all the leaves are brown…
Jethro Tull has flute magic, Moody Blues (Knights in white satin) has a killer flute solo one great song you will be amazed and maybe even overwhelmed by the instruments.
You should not have to apologize for doing songs people have heard... Like you say there is a lot of music. Not everyone has heard this or it may not be people's "go to". (Just like you guys bring songs a lot of us have not heard and we end up loving). ❤ My parents loved their music - grew up listening to them on an album in the front room. This song was/is very iconic - always a good listen! Jethro Tull is a "classic rock" band known for the flute. Wow, Nick - that "flute loop" joke landed hard! 😂❤ (Maybe it's my meds) 😂 That was cute. Denny was the Harbor Master in Theodore Tugboat (kids show that is like Thomas Train in the 90s).
There are interesting connections from the off spring of this group. John and Michelle had a daughter together - Chynna Phillips who also became a singer/musician. She joined with the daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys to form the group, Wilson Phillips. Also John had a daughter (with another woman) who was named MacKenzie Phillips. She became an actress and was on the hit sitcom One Day at a Time. Her co-star was Valerie Bertinelli who later married Eddie Van Halen. Mama Cass Elliott also had a daughter who became a musician. She toured with one of the Beach Boys, Al Jardine.
No Auto tune no computer enhancement just pure talent
Pure talent and hard work
John and Michelle were married. Cass crushed on Denny, he didn't see her that way. Michelle slept with Denny, all hell broke loose.
Yep, there was a lot of drama in that band. They even replaced Michelle with another cute blonde singer on one album, iirc.
John was a rapist.
Also, John had an inappropriately close relationship with his daughter, actress MacKenzie Philips. Well understood to have been incestuous.

John and Michelle wrote the song about his drug addiction.

Moody Blues features a flute solo in Nights in White Satin and my favorite Jethro Tull song Aqualumg.
Cass Elliot was an amzing singer. It was a real loss to music when she died. If you want flute, try the Moody Blues. Ray Thomas was super on "Nights in White Satin"
.
Also Canned Heat... "Goin up Country" has flute.
Another great flute song, Heard it in a Love Song - Marshal Tucker Band
If they do Nights on White Satin, it's got to be the long version!
Has nobody here EVER heard of Jethro Tull???
This song is one of the greats! It's not complicated. It grabs you and you just have to groove with it. Groovy man, groovy!!
Always loved this song, ever since it came out. I love their harmonies, and Mama Cass has such a beautiful, clear, unique voice.❤ Thanks so much for the reaction, guys!

Any Jethro Tull song (except for Aqualung because it has no flute in it). I would recommend My God.
Moody Blues has some flute solos and so does The Guess Who on Undun.
The Phillips daughter and Brian Wilson's daughters formed Wilson Phillips and had numerous hits, biggest one was "Hold On."
They had such a good sound. This song pulls you right in. The best of times. ✌🏻

Jethro Tull is a Progressive Rock band that the Flute usually is the lead instrument!!!!
Yes, I would like to see the reaction to this group
Same with Traffic
Locomotive breath by Jethro Tull live is great.
I love me some Jethro Tull

4 Point Counterpoint Harmony here! Rare and beautiful to hear!!
Cass and Denny were legit monster folk voices on their own. Put them together and bam.

Men at work had a flute solo, and the Moody Blues band, song knights in white satin
Early Heart albums featured Ann Wilson playing the flute quite a bit and then, of course, Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull is a flute wizard.

Peter G played flute on early real Genesis songs
The Moody Blues ... ton of flute. Examples: Nights in White Satin, Tuesday Afternoon, etc.

I remember my Mom cried when Cass Elliott died.
Groovy choice, fellas! I consider “California Dreamin’” the national anthem of the 60’s. It’s especially poignant to hear it when all the leaves are brown…
Jethro Tull was the king of flutes.
Jethro Tull has flute magic, Moody Blues (Knights in white satin) has a killer flute solo one great song you will be amazed and maybe even overwhelmed by the instruments.
Listen to Moody Blues, “Nights in White Satin “ if you want to hear more flute.
Read through a lot of comments, and as far as i can tell, no one mentioned the Moody Blue's and their flute toting music.
If you want flute take a look at the Moody Blues. "Nights in White Satin"
Great song. Awesome harmonies. As far as flute being prominent, Jethro Tull springs to mind. Aqualung, Locomotive Breath should be checked out. Peace!
Don’t be fooled, Mama Cass was the driving force behind this band and many others.
All of you might be young; but you have an old soul, so refreshing to say the least. Kudos to all three of you!😉
all time classic! ♥ They need to bring back the flute solo 😉
If the 502 means area code. Cass Elliott was from Louisville
Ok guys you need to get some Jethro Tull and find out what a lead flute can do. There's a ton of it try Locomotive Breath or Living in the Past
Also Ian Anderson plays a flute regularly in Jethro Tull, Mostly standing on one leg. Try Living In THe Past to see what I mean.
There something wholesome and innocent about this era of music
