1.6 million people, 53 people died,
    the “security” was the army.
    The crowd was the horizon.
That concert was Monsters of Rock in Moscow,
    Tushino airfield.
    1,6 million people saw Metallica,
    AC/DC, Black Crowes and Pantera.
    That was a legendary MoR.
    The entrance was free.

In the aftermath of a failed coup, Russia's prez invited AC/DC to play a free show in a Moscow airfield in Sept. 1991... Metallica, The Black Crowes, and Pantera were the opening bands... 1.6 million Russians showed up to see all 4 bands play Russia for the 1st time.
Metallica were riding high on a #1 self-titled album (aka the 'black' album) all over the world... so they were in top form. Unfortunately, Russian military were on hand for security, and violence broke out during their set... It was out of control, but Metallica were powerless to stop it. By the end of their set, a number of people had been beaten to death... reportedly over 100 rapes... It was a shocking reality check for the band.

Very nice guys. Cliff Burton wanted them to move up to SF because he didn't want to live in LA. Cliff died in a bus accident in Europe. Dave Mustaine got fired because they didn't get along. Jason Newsted became the next bass player, but he eventually tapped out. Robert Trujillo was the bassist for Suicidal Tendancies. I saw these dudes looking for tickets in the parking lot at a Metallica concert in SF.

Some context here... this was 1991. The Soviet Union had just fallen... only four years earlier was the famous President Reagan "Mr. Gorbachev... tear down this wall" speech in Berlin. The Soviet Union went from a totalitarian ruled closed society to becoming somewhat free and open to the West - basically overnight. Even under that oppressive regime little bits of Americana leaked past the Iron Curtain... and that included Metallica. Metallica and the style of music they play was HATED and feared by the ruling class in the Soviet Union as it represented everything the ruling class tried to suppress. This concert was a generational level epic event. I was an intelligence analyst in the US Navy from 1985-1991 and I remember when this happened... it was unbelievable. Only thing I could compare it to in today's world would be if North Korea suddenly opened their borders and the real world poured in. And even that would be small compared to when the Eastern Block collapsed and the West flooded their cultures. There was no internet... no digital media... no 1000 channels of cable or satellite TV back then. Just a few pirate analog radio stations beaming Western music and culture past the Iron Curtain. That makes the scale of this event that much more impressive...
