My bands are Rites of Spring, Cap'n Jazz, Sunny Day Real Estate, The Get Up Kids, The Early November, Thursday and early Taking Back Sunday and My Chemical Romance. I looked up to the dudes in the 90s-early 00's wearing sweater vests, ironic t-shirts, cuffed jeans, Converse and thick rimmed glasses. It's referred to as prehistoric emo. I’m the perfect blend of metalcore, post hardcore, pop punk and butt rock.
However, if you really think Avenged Sevenfold are the “kings of butt rock” at all then you clearly haven’t listened to them much. They originally took off as a metalcore band, then to speed/thrash, and didn’t really play butt rock till the hail to the king album, and then went in a more experimental route with the stage album. And now we’ve got the insane new stuff!

More metalcore influenced bands like Counterparts or Misery Signals can definitely fall under metalcore kids or on the other end of the spectrum you have Rise Against that can kind of fall under Pop-punk and bands like Being As An Ocean, Comeback Kid, Ghost Inside, Hundredth, Touche Amore, Napoleon, La Dispute, etc call all fall somewhere in the middle (and even all those bands listed can fall under different genres as they vary so much in sound).

I started out as a pop punk kid in 8th grade with P!ATD, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, All Time Low, etc. That quickly went to post hardcore, with Sleeping with Sirens and Pierce the Veil while still enjoying pop punk. Then freshman year I listened to metalcore, with Asking Alexandria, BMTH, Of Mice and Men, etc. I also got into rap freshman year, including emo rap like Lil Peep, X, and Juice WRLD. I also enjoyed Ski Mask the Slump God and Comethazine. (I still love rap to this day) As I fell out of dressing emo, I still enjoyed post hardcore. It was around the summer before 10th grade I got into Dance Gavin Dance. DGD is still my favorite band of all time. I have a playlist of their entire discography and it's ~11hrs long. I also got into Royal Coda shortly after because of Kurt Travis. Later on I discover Tides of Man because of Tilian Pearson. Now I'm 19 and working towards becoming a licensed Nurse Aide to get me through medical school to eventually become a doctor. I still listen to Dance Gavin Dance along with loads of rap and post hardcore stuff.

It still is the thing I listen to the most but within the last couple of years I've gone back into rock and metal so am currently going through my (kind of) emo phase at 22. Heard Bring Me The Horizon's more modern stuff which introduced me to everything else heavy they had done. Also got into bands like I Prevail and Architects so I'm more on the metalcore side. I did end up dropping the black hair, eyeliner, and piercings though haha.
Edit: for anyone who falls into those categories some newer bands I'd highly reccomend checking out are 100 Gecs, Sueco, SpiritBox, Electric Callboy, and Glaive. Also if you havent listened to BMTH in awhile their last couple songs have all been bangers!

I guess I never really fit into any of those scenes (I was 14 in 2013 and I live in Scotland, we had to wear a uniform so, no band tees unless it was dress down day). I really liked Black Sabbath and Slipknot but deep down...I was an emo. I knew of BMTH and PTV and AA, I'd listen to King For A Day and Sempiternal sometimes. I loved MCR, FOB, blink and Paramore too.
A year later I'd turn into a "sad boy" type person after my friend showed me Ginseng Strip 2002. There's that.

I gotta say I started as a pop punk kid. Because even before I went through that black emo looking thing that I never really grew out of, I listened to stuff like Bowling For Soup, All American Rejects, Fall Out Boy, Yellowcard etc. Basically all the pop punk that came on the radio.
Then I started just liking metal when I got into the emo phase. Like I looked emo as shit, but had a family wide array of sub genres. Went from Bullet For My Valentine to We Butter The Bread With Butter to Pantera. Was like 7th-8th grade. I was also exposed to other popular music from the rest of the scene/emos like Bring Me The Horizon (I remember everyone had Diamonds Aren't Forever on their MySpace page) ,Dance Gavin Dance, Hawthorne Heights, etc.
In high school, I started getting exposed to all the metalcore bands like Confide (the Such Great Heights video) Black Veil Brides (who I'd seen over the summer, was the Knives And Pens video) I Set My Friends On Fire, Brokencyde, A Day To Remember, the emo era pop punk bands like All Time Low and Paramore, As well as weird bands that really didnt fit into any categories like Protest The Hero. But I also listened to metalcore bands like All That Remains.
Sophomore year I had been seeing this girl since freshman year (went on to date her for like 10 years) and had through her, added the whole hippy stoner emo music to my Playlist. Was mostly the easycore music that I was still listening to though. Like Escape The Fate, A Day To Remember, Peirce The Veil, Black Veil Brides (who I was absolutely obsessed with for pretty much all of high school), Asking Alexandria, Attack Attack, Of Mice & Men, We Came As Romans, The Devil Wears Prada, Bullet For My Valentine..
After high school I got into metalcore reeeeally hard like Trivium, As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage (who I'd known about for a long time but never was TOO into). I think I listened to Trivium's The Sin And The Sentence album 500 times or better in just a couple years 😂
As of recently (since 2020) I started getting back into pop punk and getting more into the post 2012 era. Like Neck Deep, Real Friends, State Champs. Idk where I really sat in this, since my music was all over the place.
But I always wore mostly black, had the skinny jeans that were sometimes right red or purple. Wore this striped jacket all the time, mostly had the emo swoosh hair until my mom made me get it cut (I'd still grow it back out and straighten it though) and had the studded belts. Sometimes I miss those days

Second Wave/90s emo bands is my personal go to, but I gotta love some of those 2000s emo staples as well.

Damn. Yeah. That video was too relatable! Not 2010, but 2007 or so (old! Lol!), I listened to hippie shit and eurodance and emo and alternative, and well, I got a combination of things too. Now I listen a lot of vaporwave and frutiger aero..lol. And AI versions of old emo songs. And did that age backwards thing, and also listen to old alternative and rock music. Some stranger one day yelled at me out of a car that I dress like it’s 2005. My friends who listened to alternative really DID do things like go off to the military or become emergency personnel, and I mostly just study engineering and politics and internet stuff all day, like a hipster, but don’t have a job.

But I mostly listened to metalcore or death metal but I liked a lot of genres. I also listened to atmospheric black metal + symphonic metal. I'm 31 soon, still feeling really nostalgic about my life at 15-18 here in Sweden! I eventually became a full-time musician myself by 2015. Funeral For A Friend, Hell Is For Heroes, Reuben, Biffy Clyro, Yourcodenameis:Milo to the bands like The Cooper Temple Clause.
