I just started working in the produce department. So far your videos are invaluable.
You want the fruit to be heavy for it's size, indicating that there is a lot of juice inside. The only way to tell for sure is to try it, but the weight is a great indicator of a succulent, juicy fruit.
I love pomegranates and was so excited when my local store had them today! I bought a whole bunch, of course. However, I picked one out which was big and wonderful red color. But when I opened it the inside was dark brown and hard!! HOw can I avoid dark brown hard fruit from now on??
I didn't learn anything from your video. I wanted to know when it was ripe and you said it is ripe when picked.
What?
So true
I didn’t learn anything too
😂 💯
lol - It doesn't ripen after it's picked - the farmers pick them "ripe", so they are as ripe as they will ever get. lol. I wanted to see the difference inside. next...
This was not very helpful to me. When I buy pomegrantes at the store they are sometimes brown inside and a few have had clear seeds that are not ripe yet. After all of his info, the only thing he said about how to tell if they are ripe is that 'they are picked when they are ripe'.
+Beth House actually! I wonder what level of intelligence this educational video is pitched at. Just a wonder.
I'm glad to know if it looks pretty I should try it. Thanks, Pro.
It's true. The ones off the tree are never shiny and polished like you see at the store. It's true that we 'eat' first with our eyes. So they are trying to make the fruit seem as appealing as possible. Give we a good old 'cracked' pomegranate any day.
“Here’s how you know when a pomegranate is ready for pickin’: I used to LOVE eating these things outside when I was a kid back in Cali. Tastes SO good! And THATS how you can tell if it’s ready!”
It's Pomegranate season! You should be seeing them in the stores and hopefully some special pricing on them. Know what to look for when you shop...
You asked me for friendship, then I go to your channel and what do I see? the answer to my question yesterday, this video! Hubby just found a pome tree near our house. They are so good! So different from the store bought ones!
Thanks for this video. SO timely. :)
My tree has set fruit for the very first time, you suggest I wait for the fruit to split before picking. Is there a way to tell beforehand that it's ready?
Thanks. Watched a few clips 2 day. Very helpful.
Glad I found you...;)
Ohh I planted a pomagranate tree last year. Actually had a few the first year I planted it! Wow it was so tastey!
Great channel I subbed!
Thank you very much.Very helpful.
Just subscribed and just watched your video on ripe pomegranates. I almost threw them all away because they were split and I thought that was a bad thing. Now we know we have lots of good pomegranates. Thanks much,
Rebecca in Sun City, CA
Hi this is my first time buying this fruit never new anything about it however i did buy one and i was trying to find the best one but it was hard i found one kind of ok just a little tiny cut at the bottom maybe to open it yet how do u know if the seeds are good or not
the problem is, even if they're red, which is how they normally are in a supermarket, they are white inside and they are still sour and not ripe.
so how would we know when they're red inside?
Well said. There are some excellent video production tutorials on UA-cam. Thanks for sharing your info on food.
my pomegranate was not very red inside and the skin was very thick inside ,it is the beginning of Autumn here in Australia , It was a large fruit, the first fruit, of our new tree wondering what was wrong did we pick it to soon or did it need certain fertilizer to make it more red inside
I'm having trouble finding these, what store could I find them at?
First time buying one and I'm pretty sure I got it correct by just my own sense...Mine is red and hard but also a little soft. So I do hope I have it correct as I'm not ready to eat it yet. Though in the fruit store I picked from, all were extremely soft, bruised or not fully red yet..
Big help, thank you.
@1:23 how to tell when tree-ripped are ripe.
@1:44 how to tell when store-bought are ripe.
Thanks for the timing tips. I was hoping my store-bought would ripen further. Now I know better for next time.
My smooth red pomegranates are not ripe..Would the end of October be the best time to pick them?
This was very helpful thanks :)
Thank you for the info. I'm growing my first pomegranates and was having trouble deciding when to pick. I thought after they split they would be too old. So I think I picked some before they were ready. First one had pale red seeds, but still sweet and good. Second one I picked some of the seeds were white and not very good. Now I think I'll wait for them to start to split before I pick any more.
I own a pomegranate Farm it came with the house how I pick them before the frost the day before the frost I don't know if it's the right way but am leaning this year I have thousands of pomegranates two different kind Great Harvest at a dollar each it should pay my property taxes coming up
I did the same mistake you did and haste makes waste... Then left the pomegranate in the tree and forget them they fell to the ground already cracked and it was ripen good and very sweet and the right way tree teaches by letting go of the goodness by itself at the tight time...i learned my lesson
Excellent guidance. We here in the northeast can't "buy local" so have to rely on imports, and I've never known how to choose good ones - and I've made some errors. Now I know, and can relish these squirts of starlight for their very short season up in these parts. Now I'm looking forward to the other video to see if there's a better way of dealing with them. Thank you!
I actually have one that I planted about 4 years ago. This is the first year it's put on fruit (it's put on some in the past, but I always removed them small, so the tree could grow better). Problem is, I'm not sure when they're ripe. They are all very red and look ripe, but from what I've read probably not until August/September. Any advice?
I bought pomegranate at a store, and they were nice and red and smooth. But i opened one today and it is not ripe at all. What should I do? Is there a way to make them ripe? Thanks! great video!
My mom made us get in the bath tub but it was worth it! I grew up in SC too... Palos Verdes area.
So how u pick a ripe one from the others??? 🤷🏻♀️
I love your channel. Thank you so much
wonderful information love pamegranate
Helpful(y)
Very nice video! Thanks for the information!
What about the crown on the pom? Some say when the points curl in back, i.e. closing the 'hole', then it's an indication it's already ripe. Is that correct?
Yeah, I was pretty shocked when I saw that you could get an entire bag of apples or oranges for the price of a single pom.. But it's a rare treat, so ehh, why not!! : )
Thanks for the info! (:
I bought 2 pomegranates today that were beautiful in the outside, but the seeds were light red mixed in with white so not very ripe. Is there anything else I should look for?
Thanks so much for making this video
Yes tnx a bunch I meant LsVs NV! I'll check the N'hood Walmart Sam's club food4less & another bio chain which has few stores here but I forgot its name. I think I've seen it in nei'hood mart. Keep up u r doing great job professional meanful vids!
Great video. Thanks for the help
+Denise Crafferty Really!?
I am very happy that you share this information and I hope that you will not take offense if I make a few suggestions. First of all your voice is an important part of your message and using a lavalier wireless or even wire microphone would help greatly with the sound qualtiy. Secondly especially when talking about food color and texture is very important. I like dramatic backlighting but it is unsuitable for your subject matter. Front lighting should be your main light with side or back light
Hi This is terrific, but I want to know why they split on the tree, especially when they are small and not ready to eat? Do you know what this is? We have a tree that is four years old, and is producing now, but they always split, some of them are ready and some are not. Any help you can pass along is appreciated. thank you!
FOR FUCKS SAKE MATE, JUST TELL ME IF FUCKING RIPE OR NOT!!!
Thank you! I need my promagrantites!
Thankyou!
Pomegranates are my most favorite fruits. However, I have found several smooth shelled ones but when I open them, they are very tart and clearly not ripe. But other times, with the same smooth shell, it's juicy and sweet and such a luscious red on the inside rather than pink. I'm not sure why that is. Also, I am on the North East coast so the fruit is imported (sadly). If you have any further tips that could help me tell when the fruit is sweet and ready to eat, that would be wonderful.
OK I bought 6 from costco for 8 bucks and they look just like the ones you told me were ripe but when I opened it, it was not sweet and the seeds were a bit white.... if I leave the other ones for awhile will they ripen more?
barb smith they will trust me leave them for about 3 days 🙂
Pomegranate is so yummy! Love it :)
Thank you for that information. I was told that if they were cracked they would be able to ripen. Apparently I was told wrong.
Well, not exactly the info I was looking for... I have a tree that grew from seed in another plant. I dug it up and put it into a 5 gallon pot and it has been there for a couple years. Now it has 3 nice big burgundy pomegranates. How do I know when I can take them? The leaves are beginning to turn yellow and fall off for the winter.
What is the shelf life of the fruit after it is picked?
I have a pomegranate, oranges, and grape fruit, Lemons, Limes, Chilis, and some rosemary and Thyme. I usually let the neighbors take it to help pluck all the ones i dont use but now i really want to make something big but running low from all the pickers. I winder how can i politely tell them just this one i need enough to make a barrel of juice
I had a neighbor with a Pomegranate tree too.I have not had one in years.
Which chains & stores sale them in southwestern US? Helpful vid tnx!
I'm not certain which chains you have in the SW US (I'm assuming you mean AZ and NV) but all your major chains should carry them. Ask your local produce manager to see what he can do for you.
In Nevada, you'll find pomegranates at Smith's, Albertsons and sometimes SafeWay. In Arizona, Fry's Marketplace and Target will have them.
+vigosts In Southeast Texas, Kroger has them. October-November is pomegranate season so they may or may not have them at other times of the year.
Kroger (Smith's), Albertson's, Fry's and Safeway all carry them.
this man is throwing a pom pickin party soon... Wanna go?
I recently discovered that I LOVE the taste of Pomegranates!! But these little lovelies are EXPENSIVE!! 2 bucks apiece at my local megamart. Totally worth it though : )
i just moved back to indiana from vegas. my neighbor had a pom tree, my question is do you think they could grow here
i eat thm alot and i find that the pink ones are better thn the bright red ones
Awesome dude
What kind of climate does a Pom tree need to grow and produce fruit?
Tap it and you will hear a metallic sound. It’s ready
Only one real way to tell, and that's to taste it. I've found that red color is a hopeful sign that they will be sweet. When they are cracking open, like in the video they will be sweet. However, you rarely find them cracking open at most stores. I look for the prettiest one and go for that. If it's bad, I will take it back because they cost so dang much!
those ones from the store are "glossy" and shiny because they have a wax like coating on them to make them more appealing just like all other "conventionally" grown produce
like the apron
how can you tell which are sour and which are sweet.....?
But when is it too early to pick a pomegranate? We picked one and it looked red and ripe, but it was bitter. How do we know the difference?
how can you tell if they are sweet?
i totally want a pomegranate tree
Actually the uglier the fruit the healthier it is for you. The protective chemicals that fruit and veg produce (bioflavonoids) are very healthy for us, so the more a fruit had to defend itself (without the help of pesticides) the better it is for you! (I'm an orthomolecular therapist)
Are they supposed to be sweet ?
I have tried to eat two pomegranates so far. The first one was rotten on the inside, the other wasn't ripe, but they both looked the same on the outside :(
HELP HELP HELP
What I can't seem to find is how to tell if a pomegranate has been poisoned by those beetle looking type of bugs.
In Scandinavia they are of course imported, but I think it is hard to know when they are ripe. It is NOT any help what you say, that it's ripe when it's red and shiny and look nice - some are ripe and juicy, but some are NOT ripe, but in stead pale colored, dry and sour, not tasty at all. And they are VERY expencive here, so I need to learn more about how to know they are ripe - because they are far too expensive to open and throw away because they are not ripe and taste sour, no juice in, and not eatable. Maybe it's other ways to see if it's ripe in Scandinavia? Can anybody help? Because I really LOVE a fully ripe pomegranate!! :))
I CUT THE RED ONES OPEN AND THE FRUIT IS A LIGHT YELLOW UNLIKE THE OTHER 3 POMEGRANITES I HAD EATEN PREVIOUSLY. I WANTED TO KNOW WHEN THEY ARE UNDER RIPE? YOUR SHADOW SEEMS TO COVER THE COLOR. THE ONE I JUST CUT WAS DARK RED LIKE A BURGUNDY COLOR. THANKS ANYONE?
Looooooove!
especially for $3.50 just for one I'm hoping mine is nice!!!
But how do you open it??
diggin the apron, send me pomegranates please
*beautiful on the outside
Skip to 2 minutes. The first 120 seconds are blathering about not the subject.
This one was not elaborate enough can you add more details to it. the glossy shiny one on the produce shelf turned out to be not sweet and not that bloody red color as well.
If you got yourself a lavalliere mic, this show would be totally pro!
"it makes a bad stain" to me just means that I can probably use them to dye fabrics. If it works, it's a gorgeous color. :)
Update: I picked one at the end of August but is wasn't quite ready. I noticed two of them cracked today, so I picked them. They were perfectly ripe.
P.S. I stained my shirt :)
They should be almost dry-skinned and preferably cracked. These "perfect" looking red ones from the store will in most cases be completely "green" inside and unimaginably sour. Basically useless. Greetings to all, from Mediterranean, the actual place where we grow these.
3 bucks at mine. They're wonderful, though.
These comments are mean, nice video
Great video, YourProduceGuy! Can't wait to eat my RIPE pomegranate ;)
I brought 2 pomegranate and 1 was rotten... :(
Oh! Ok. So the splits aren't just because those ones were the last on the tree. Thanks!
why are my pomegranates rotten on the inside. they look so beautiful.
useful info... and take your shirt off before you eat the in the yard!
Best way to prepare a pom. is under water.
Thank you... I'll look for that. If they don't by the end of September I'll have to pick a test one. I don't have that many, about 7 on the tree (approx2-3 inches) the rest are small.
U have to be clear, say the tiny ugly looking is ripe, because it's cracking, flattened and the tip is dry and the glossy good looking in the store is not ripe yet because it's tip still fresh and it's so glossy and round it's beautiful but not ripe yet
The video was great informative except only half the video was informative. The beginning and the end was like filler. I was very anxious for you to get to the point and had to fast forward over 30 percent of it. The middle 30 percent was very informative. I noticed that about your other videos. Maybe I'm just impatient but I really don't care how you started eating pomegranates or where you were or any of that. When I go to the Internet for an answer. That's all I want is an answer
your video did not help me at all.
Are you high?
