In this episode of In the Kitchen with Matt, I will show you how to eat a pomegranate. I will also do a pomegranate taste test. Where do pomegranates grow? Pomegranates originated in the Iran to Northern India region many centuries ago, but have long since been cultivated in many other parts of the world. They are grown here in Arizona and in California and other States. Pomegranates are among the healthiest foods and fruits that you can eat. High essential vitamins and other healthy properties. But they can take a few minutes to prepare, you can't just eat into one like you can an apple. And don't get the juice on your clothes! The seeds are super juicy and tasty. People juice pomegranates as well as use the seeds in salads and other things. So yummy!
How to Eat a Pomegranate? To eat a pomegranate all you need to do is cut around the top where the step was and then pull it off. Then cut along the ridges of the pomegranate. Then open it up and dump the seeds into a bowl of water.
Have you had a pomegranate before? What did you think? How much did it cost? Drop a comment down below and let me know. :)

This is so wholesome. I felt kind of stupid for not knowing how to approach these but I always used to see other kids with them in their lunches and be jealous. Now that I'm an adult, I wanted one but wasn't sure how to cut or eat them. Grateful for friendly creators like you who are happy to walk us through it!
So glad the video was helpful. :) :)
I'm 64 years old and never knew how to eat one. Thank you for this awesome video...I can't wait to buy and eat one tomorrow!! Thank you!
You are so very welcome, Kim! :) Let me know how it goes!
What a timely video! My wife brought two of the fruits from the supermarket, and I was wondering how to handle them because they are not grown here in Ghana, West Africa. With your demonstration, I am now good to go. Thanks a million.
Awesome! You are welcome!
Can't wait to give it a go. I love middle-eastern foods. It's so wonderful how people around the world come together to comment on videos like yours. The world can be a beautiful place.
Middle-eastern foods are amazing! Wonderful indeed!
Thanks for the info. I just bought 2 pomegranates for $6.00, sale peice in Spokane Washington. I sliced one in half and started eating seeds with a teaspoon. I knew there had to be a better way. Never had them during my childhood in Minnesota. I LOVE pomegranate! The health benefits are an added bonus.
You are very welcome, Sher!! That is quite expensive, I just found them for $0.99 at my Kroger owned supermarket in the Phoenix area. Yes they are so yummy and awesome health benefits!
I have always wanted to taste Pomegranate but i broke my arm so my sister had to do it for me and she was asking me how to open it and i showed her the video {i told her to search up this video} and then I let her taste some and now me and her eat Pomegranates when she comes and also she has a Pomegranate plant and i have got to thank you for showing her and I. :)
Sorry you broke your arm! And glad you like pomegranates!
I‘m from Iran، I have pomegranate trees in my yard , we eat it like you showed ,except the bowl of water , we just take out the seeds and eat it with some salt. Loved your video .
Awesome! And thank you!
I love pomegranates, but haven't had them in years. Thanks for sharing this method. I have 2 from my farm box delivery and am looking forward to enjoying them!
You are welcome!! :) Pomegranates are so good!
Have been eating pomegranates all my life; nowI know how to save time and energy by scoring the top and cutting at the ridges. Thanks for the awakening!👍🏼👏🏽
You are welcome!! :)
Tasted Pomegranate for the first time, and didn't like the seeds that were inside. So will try juicing next time. They are very expensive here in Australia....Thank you for sharing...
You are welcome! Glad you were able to taste them.
Ive had pomegranates but i never knew you could eat the seeds i just sucked the juice and spit the seeds out now i know im about to go buy more thank you for your detailed video on them
Yeah, a lot of people still spit them out, but they are definitely edible. :) Gives a little bit extra fiber, haha. :) And you are so very welcome, Angel!
Yeah now I will buy them more
@@missbc64 Awesome!
All this time I've been eating them wrong. Thanks for letting me know you can eat the seeds😀
I still dont like the seeds lol
Best way to open and deseed a pomegranate I've seen! Thank you!
Thank you! And you are very welcome!
They are my favorite!! So good. You can use them as a garnish when cooking and baking. So many different ways to enjoy them. 😊
I know right? So amazing. :)
Thank you so much! I just bought a house that has a pomegranate tree, but I had no idea how to get into them!
You are so very welcome, Kirsten! :) That is awesome your house had a pomegranate in the yard.
i love how excited you are , the simple things in life are sometimes the best .

Thank you so much! Indeed the simple things are truly sometimes the best. Thank you for watching in Berlin! :) Danka!
Im 38 and never had a pomegranate, I saw one at the store for the first time and thought what the heck? Thank you for this video! Oh my goodness they are so delicious!
Awesome, never too late to try it!! :) Glad the video was helpful and glad you got to try this amazing fruit!
Wow!! I never knw how to consume this until now. Thank you so much
You are so very welcome!
I have never had a fresh pomegranate, you made it look easy enough to give it a try. Thanks.
You are welcome! Let me know after you try one if you like it.
Never had them befor! Always wanted one ! Got two today !! Thanks for sharing 👍
Awesome! You are welcome, let me know how you like them after trying them.
I first ate pomegranates 65 years ago as a grade school kid in small town EasternWashington. I have been missing them so was happy to see them today at the grocery. 99 cents in Lawrence Ks.
That is a great price!
Thanks for the video! I just bought one and didn't know what to do with it.
You are very welcome, Dana!
I was in the grocery store a week ago, and I was browsing through the produce section (my favorite section!), and I saw a pomegranate. I thought to myself, "That sounds like fun!" I did try to do your method from memory on a Tik Tok video, and I kind of didn't do it well. While it took me some time, I was able to empty out the fruit. I'm in love! I can't wait to go back to my grocery store to buy some more. It's hard to explain the taste, but I like tart fruit and berries. Thanks for the video!
Awesome!! Yeah this is such an amazing fruit and you are very welcome! :)
Thank you! I knew there had to be a easier way.
You are very welcome!! :)
Thank you for this informative video. My child tasted the seed but wanted to know more about where they came from so we watched your video.
You are very welcome! Glad someone likes that information. I have had people complain that these fruit videos are too long haha.
Great video. Ate these as a child. Getting ready to cut one now. Thanks for the tips. One costs $5.99 in harris teeter in virginia.
Thank you, Jan!! That is awesome! Expensive, they aren't in peak season right now, probably why they are that expensive.
Thank you for this video. The pomegranate juice in the Super is like $18 (that was last year's price), so I bought a pomegranate fruit out of curiosity and cut it open, saw a bunch of seeds. Where's the fruit? Looked up "How to eat a pomegranate". However I still got red stains all over my desk, shirt, even my glasses. And it took a minute to figure out the red "grammar error mark" on my computer monitor was another pomegranate drop. My wife was Philippino, so we had star fruit, but those were easy. Thanks again.
Yep the seeds are the fruit! haha.
Wow! Came across this video and I love it! Always wanted to try some and finally bought some today and had no idea how to eat it. Now I do and my only regret is not trying it sooner. I so love the sweetness. THANKS ❤💜💙
So awesome, Veronica! I am glad you found the video and thought it was helpful/useful. :) You are welcome!
thank you for this video! i just did a ritual and had a pomegranate for the first time during it, it was really soothing to work with the seeds.
You are welcome!
😋 I have a wonderful time with eating pomegranates when I grew up in Hawaii. My brother and I tried to open and eat pomegranates in our basement when our mom bought them. Since I left for college in the mainland, I have not eaten them. Now it’s been almost 50 years since I last ate the fresh fruit. I happened to see this pomegranate. In my mind I thought “OMG!” I grabbed and bought 6. Last night I struggled opening it and I ate some. 😋 YUMMY! I miss eating the pomegranates so much. ❤❤❤🤙🏼🌺
Awesome Wendy! Yes, pomegranates are so yummy and now they are in season so they are a bit cheaper.
Thanks. This would be the first time I would eat pomegranate. I'm from the Philippines.
You are welcome!
I love pomegranates but haven’t tried cutting one till watching your video. Mine cost $2 in Kroger Shreveport, La.
Thank you for this video!!
You are welcome!! :) Enjoy! :)
Your video taught me and my 3 year old how to prepare and eat a pomegranate. She is now a fan of the fruit! Thank you! Also - I like your Get Up Kids tshirt. I went to high school with them!
Glad you watched the video and that it was helpful!! :) You are welcome! That t-shirt is actually from a site called Instructables. That robot is their logo. :) But it does look similar to on of the Get Up Kids shirts.
Thank you so much for this video… i was wondering if I can eat the seeds

Thank you so much! I too didn't know you could eat the seeds. Ahum-ahum Delishiousness!!!
You are very welcome!! :)
Very nice tip for cutting it. Why are we washing the seeds? Is it needed considering they are inside?
Thanks! No it isn't needed, it helps to get all the white pith off, because that floats to the top. :)
@inthekitchenwithmatt thank you 😊

I’ve always loved poms & never knew you could eat the seeds! Mindblown lol thank you

You are welcome, Lauren! Glad it was helpful for you. :)
Just ate my first one after watching this and wow I’ve been missing out
Awesome! Glad you were able to try it finally!
Very helpful. A question: How does one knows when it's ripe and ready to eat?
Thanks, Robert! They will change from being completely round to slightly angular. The skin texture will also become slightly rough instead of super smooth. It should also feel kind of heavy for its size.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt Thanks so much. I am enjoying a great big fat one! Pricey at Whole Foods, $2.00. Thanks for your nice reply. robert
@@robertkolbe8217 You are welcome, Robert! I just saw some medium-sized ones at my Kroger supermarket, they were 1.25 a piece.

Thanks for this. I bought one years ago and didn’t know what do with it lol.
You are welcome! Glad this video was helpful.
At my local supermarket they are $4.50 each here in Australia where everything is expensive! I’ll look at my local Asian grocery because I really want to try pomegranate looks delicious
They can get that expensive here in Phoenix as well, but down as low as $1.25 during peak season.
Yummy, we treated by you. Just had mine awhile ago from the Farmer's Market in Ghana.
Awesome!! Glad you tried it. :) :)
Thanks=.I needed to learn how to do this. I made a mess last night and that’s why I avoided them. I look for to doing this the correct way now. Thanks

Thanks Matt! Buying one tomorrow!😄

Thanks for the great video! I haven't had one in years!! I saw some the other day and had to get some! I had no idea how to clean them. I would just cut into quartered sections and eat away. This is very helpful!! Thanks!😉👍❤

Are the seeds nutritious?
Yes!
My grandparents had a pomegranate tree in the front yard, we loved it. I've never eaten the seeds but I'm going to try to next time.
Awesome!!
I love pomegranate as well. Just bought 5 of them. Can't wait to eat them. I like the way you broke it down.
Awesome!! :) Glad you liked the video. :)
The seeds tastes like coconut juice. So delicious, it's like going from one fruit to another in the same mouth. Can the crushed seeds be swallowed?
Yes you can eat the seeds! :)
@@inthekitchenwithmatt
I mean can I swallow the masticated seed? Thank you
@@graceolaitan2126 Yes you can swallow the seeds. They are rich in fiber.
Pomegranates seem to be available in fall to late fall. I read that they have a long shelf life, but how do you store them to last the longest?
Store them in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 months.
Thanks. I had never known how to eat a pomegranate. I didn't know if you ate the seeds or the flesh or what. I'll try it now.
You are very welcome! :)
Im from the Philippines a friend gave it to me they have tree in their house my first time eating Pomegranate although I already had it in juice bought in grocery. I ate the seeds but i just check if the seeds can be eaten untill I see in your YT that we can eat the seeds. Thanks

My Doctor just gave me a health scare and one of the fruits he told me to start eating is pomegranate … I got them today and couldn’t figure out how to eat it and wondered if i was just being dumb - basically i didn’t know what to do with the seeds. I even considered the possibility of them breaking my teeth, so I had to come on to UA-cam to find out HOW TO EAT PROMEGRANATE. Thanks for the video! I will try eating the seeds next time, but if they break my teeth I’m coming for you!! :)
Sorry to hear about the health scare! Oh yeah people have been eating the seeds for ages. Not as hard as popcorn kernels. :) Just try a few at first before chomping down on a handful at once haha, which is what I normally do, love love love pomegranates.

Haven't had any since I was a little girl, my daughter got me some a few days ago and they are still delicious
Awesome! Yeah one of my favorite fruits.
Thanks Matt, I love pomegranate seeds too. You made the process to get to the seeds very simple, enjoyed the video.
You are very welcome!! :)
I bought one for the first time today ($3.99 for one at a Kroger...never again. Going directly to the fruit market from now on) and I have a story. My dad told me when I was little that my mother loved "indian apples" and that she ate the seeds. Mind you this was back in the 70s. I faintly remember being shown one back then but I remembered that it didn't look like an apple. I don't remember seeing her eat these while we were little but she said she liked them. Fast forward to these times, everything is pomegranate this and pomegranate that. The juice is so tasty but let me find one in the natural state. OMG.....this is the "indian apple" that my dad was talking about!!!! I guess you could say my intrigue has come full circle. These "indian apples" are so good!!! I didn't know how to open it and your video came up first.
Such a nice story! Yeah, I see them for that price sometimes at my Kroger owned store (Fry's) here in Arizona. Typically they will be cheaper at a farmer's type market/fruit market. Glad the story came full circle! :)
Hey Matt how are you doing?😊
I just ate one and it was a mess 😂, I should have watched your video before... so, for the next one I know how I can eat it😊- Thank you!
Hi Melissa!! I am well, thank you. :) :) haha, yeah if you haven't eaten one before, it can get messy! haha :) :) You are welcome.
THANK YOU
You are welcome!!
Came to learn how to cut a pomegranate, left with a new favourite channel
Glad you liked the video! And thanks Cole!
How do you know when a pomegranate is ripe enough to cut into?
They don't ripen after they are picked, so unless you have them growing on a tree, you are at the mercy of what is in the store. While at the store pick the ones that are darker in color, have more of a squarish shape, heavier for their size, and sound dense. That will help you pick the best ones out of the bunch. :)
@@inthekitchenwithmatt thanks! That is so helpful and I will share it with the friend who gave me the pomegranate! Your video of how to cut it is wonderful, and even though my pomegranate was not really ripe enough, I was still able to use your method to get some pretty tasty seeds for a nice evening dessert!
@@ninagrey4579 You are very welcome!! :) Glad the video was helpful. :)
Thank you for sharing I only ate them one time long ago a teacher brought one in the class and everyone swarmed her wondering what it was mind you this was high school so I bought one today for breakfast I just forgot if you eat the seeds under the fruit or spit them out like cherries
You are welcome!
That's awesome 😎 Never new it was about the seeds
Thanks! :)
Is coconut water also good with pomegranate? I heard some one say it’s super tasty
I imagine if you like pomegranate and you like coconut water you will like them both together. :)
One Christmas I bought pomegranates.
About 2 months after Christmas I found one at the bottom of my wooden fruit bowl.
It had fermented!
Delicious it was and definitely alcoholic.
The seeds were very soft.
In Perth ,Western Australia one fruit will cost upward of $2.99.
Cool!!
Thank you Matt 😀

I was on the fence about pomegranate but you persuaded me to eat it.
Cool! :)
Thank you for presentation. I love pomegranate, and I eat almost every day. But I want to know if seeds are healthy to eat or not? I heard that I can eat the seeds, but what is the benefits if you eat seeds? Thank you an advance, waiting for your answer.
Hello! Yep the seeds are definitely edible and nutritious, they contain good amounts of fiber.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt Thank you very much. I got it.

Thank you for making this! Would have never figured it out on my own. I’m from a meat and potatoes family, so I’ve had to learn a lot about healthier foods on my own. I didn’t even have avocado until college. Haha
You are so very welcome! :)
Love them I have been eating them for a while I paid $2.99 for 1 at Walmart in North Carolina
Nice!! Yeah they are super yummy.
Used to eat them as a child...I'm having my first since childhood n I'm in my 50's...
Awesome!
I always spit the seeds out I never knew you could eat the seeds. I just suck the juice out and it the skin around the seed and spit the seed out. Now that I know I will try to eat the seeds as well. I live in San Diego County and the market sells them 2 for $4
Awesome, yeah crunch down on those seeds next time haha :)
I used to take the arils and mix them in yogurt
Awesome!
Any tips on how to spot the good fruits? You know, like with avocados where you would be looking for dark skin and slight softness.
The ripe fruits will be slightly angular and no longer round, the blossom ends will be fatter, the skin texture will be slightly rough instead of super smooth.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt - Hi, Matt, thanks for this! I'm just reviewing my un-schooled approach to these guys - cut randomly in quarters, then cut the quarters in half and pop the seeds of each piece out. Of course, what happens doing that is you end up cutting through many of the juicy seeds in the process...and there are sticky pom juice drops flying all over the place, what a mess! Gonna try this more refined method on my next one, lol.
I do have a question for you - if you end up with pomegranates that are round and smooth (ie not quite ripe), will they continue to ripen as many fruits do if you leave them out, or will they just eventually just dry out?
Yes definitely try it like this you don't cut through any of the arils! Way less messy haha. And no sorry they don't continue ripening off the tree. So hopefully wherever you buy them, they were picked at peak ripeness. @@AbsentWithoutLeaving
@@inthekitchenwithmatt - Thanks for the reply! 😘
