Digitech Freqout: Never been off my board. My guide to “playing” it

- Thanks for joining me.
This is a pedal that’s never been off my board. I use it quite infrequently and yet it’s just the perfect cherry on the cake!
Equipment used tonight:
Oswald Stratocaster
Fender Telecaster ‘52 heavy relic
Cornell Romany 12 amp
JTM SS Overdrive
Kingsley Page boost / overdrive pedal
Strymon Flint Reverb
TC Electronic flashback delay
No computers, no audio interfaces, no special mics or cameras. Just my iphone, then uploaded to iMovie then to UA-cam

I've been jamming to your intro all week. It has really helped me break out of a rushed scalar style into a more fluid kind of improvisation. What a great influence. Thank you.
Thanks again Paul, for another entertaining video. Lovely playing as always, and your personality always comes through in your presentation.
Thank you Burt. Appreciated 😊
Fabulous as always Paul , I completely forgot you were demonstrating the Freqout I was so immersed in your playing, and it's an "old tune" that has been very inspiring to me over the last couple of years......no other pedal brings a smile to my face when I'm using it as much as the Freqout does ☺
Thanks Mike 👍
Thank you Paul I wouldn’t miss any of your great videos which inspires me for an Edinburgh gig tmrw 🎸👍❤️
Awesome Paul as always you're playing really says something that's what it's all about speaks to your heart and soul
Thank you Rick! Appreciated
Thanks for doing this video. I love this pedal and you have given me a fresh look!
Well thanks Phil 👍
Love the playing and the sentiment. I've been looking for one of these, I think it'll be worth it when I find one at the right price.
Best Freqout demo Ive seen on UA-cam. Gotta love how it slowly rolls into those sweet harmonics at such low volume.
Thanks CinemaKev 👍
Thank you!
I’ve watched ten Freqout demos and this is the first where it sounds natural
Well thank you Dave!
Love you honesty Paul lol, and of course your brilliant playing once again. The Freqout is something else 👍🏻
Thanks Moose 👍
Never heard of this pedal….thanks for the introduction! Beautiful playing as usual,
Thanks Peter, cheers mate
Totally incredible playing
Thank you camringoodman, appreciated 🍻
Hi pal, really enjoyed this one, your sounds are getting better if that's possible, must be the good mood your in with my gags hehe, and speaking of, a taxi driver is waiting outside a hotel for his hire, suddenly the pope gets in and says "driver I need to get to the airport in the next 20 minutes ", driver says " sorry your Holiness that's impossible in this traffic ", pope says "I'll give you £500 on top if you will do this for me", driver says " look i could lose my licence and taxi, I'm sorry ", pope says "What if I drive and I'll still give you the £500", driver says "ok your on", so the pope is driving like a madman and of course gets pulled over, the cop says " do you know how fast you were driving ?", and the pope says "I'm sorry officer, but I simply have to get to the airport in the next 5 minutes ", the cop radios in " sarge, I've just pulled over a very important person for speeding ", sarge says "is he more important than me ?", yes sarge, " is he more important than the chief inspector ?" Yes sarge " is he more important than the prime minister ?", "sarge, this guy is that important that the pope is his driver ". All the best mate.
I loved that one John! Mind you, I’m on my second glass of red….. But that was funny regardless! I’ll be telling my wife that one.
Cheers John 😂
Just got a Freqout and I was pretty down on it until I saw this, thank you!
Less is more and learn the art of when to let go of that button!
And it sure doesn't hurt to hold your guitar up and sell it!!
Great advice. Beautiful playing.
Thanks Bob, your comment has me smiling. Glad I helped with your enjoyment of the Freqout. 🍻
Fantastic stuff as usual Paul sounds heavenly
Thank you cams6673 👍
Terrific playing, mate… thanks for the demo!
Thank you vampyros, glad you enjoyed it 😊
Nice and beautiful playing! Love it
Thanks Nazme 👍
Love that strat tone.wow.and your playing is superb.👍👍👍👍👍🌷🌷🌷🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks vintage tone 👍
Love the moody nature of your playing. Really soulful, bro
Thanks man, appreciated 😊
Great playing!
Wow such awesome phrasing and note choices. Subscribed.
Well thank you Rob 👍
I came here after your 1st review of this pedal - it makes sense that you would make use of this pedal. Lots of feel. Thanks for the effort.
Thanks man, cheers
@@paulstaffordcook8799- I'm trying to make sense of this effect in the HELIX update. The Freakout pedal is easier to use. Once I get everything assigned to buttons on the floorboard it will work.
aye, enjoyed that, , like the chap said before, it all sounded fine :) that double stop you played at 8:33 just sublime mate, your a master of them
Thanks Charlie 👍
Nice sound and nice explanation about the pedal. Sounds great and can't wait to see how it works in a live situation with a band. Best regards.
Thanks milanosde 👍
Im not sure if I would be able to use it properly at the stage of my playing ability but I can see how cool it would used in different lead situations. Thanks for sharing the knowledge Paul. I really enjoy listening to you play. I like the way you put feeling in every note you play. Love you all Bill.
Thank you Bill. I’m delighted you like my playing. Appreciated 👍
This is awesome!
Well thank you man, much appreciated 👍
Hi Paul, really love your approach, your tone and overall your playing. By the way, because of you, Nick Oswald is (as we speak) building me a hard tail Strat with of course different specs but the same level of relic-ing. Keep posting your bloody good stuff.
Well thank you Chris, and I’m delighted to hear you’re on Nick’s build list 👍. I think you’ll be very impressed when it arrives. His craft is definitely up there with Fender’s Custom Shop. Everything just works great, from electrical shielding to great pots, to great tuners etc.
You have a lot of original ideas. Very nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
I've been watching your "tricks of the trade" videos and PRACTICING WITH IT. Would love to see more, even if it's repeating some of the same. Love the vids for the keys E, A, D, G, etc and the diminished scale.
Excellent! Delighted to hear my wee videos are being seen as useful. Thanks man, appreciated 👍
Amazing solo 👍🏻
Man, I've never herd of those Cornell amps, thanks for turning me onto them.
I've got a home built 59 bassman head, running into a 4x12 sized cab loaded with 2 x 55hz greenbacks. So we are somewhat in the same tonal family. But I'm always in the market for more juicy tone machines lol. And that sounds sublime!
Thanks, cheers 👍
Brilliant as always! Howdy from MOntana :)
Hi Hobbit Homes. Montana? Man, that’s gotta be on SO many peoples bucket list. It’s certainly on mine. I hope to find myself up in Glacier one day (probably dressed head to toe in cans of bear spray 🤣).
Love this channel. So fantastic, so consistent, so real. Best!!!
P.S. I bought the Kingsley Harlot based on your video and have never looked back. My oh my. Perhaps one day I'll seek out a Page as well. Lovely outfit (Kingsley) to work with as well.
Thank you Kevin, delighted you like my wee videos. And that’s great you’ve got your hands on a Kingsley Harlot. I maintain it’s the single best OD I’ve ever played. Congratulations
Great playing! 😮
Thank you Fonkemman 🍻
thanks Paul. I got a Freqout having seen you use it some time ago and dont use it much but it's staying on the board. I love it. dont see many around tho
Yeah, it seems strangely rare…..
Getting yer freq on Paul 😆 I thought it was particularly tasty on the release bend. Great playing as always. Few F chords at the end there. 🤣😂
Captain Cook ,you inspire me sir, hats off to Roy🎸✌🏻
Thank you D.B. 👍. Appreciated
Lovely video as always. I do love the transcript calling the pedal a Free Coat 😂
Thanks drcockles 👍
Great playing as usual.
Ive got the sustainiac system in a Schecter.
Kinda the same, but not quite as subtle.
Really enjoy your vids
Thanks Frewtunes. Yeah, I’ve never tried a sustainiac system before….. 🤔
LOL... 2nd in a Row First Post Post ... too funny... One of the first pedals I got was a Ross Compressor when I was 15, and I still have it and it is always connected and always on. Great pedal... Thanks for the post and have a great weekend!
Thanks MichaelNC! Wow, what a coincidence! Surely you deserve a prize?! Well cheers mate, delighted you’re still tuning in regularly to my little show 👍
Great pedal Paul. I didn't know about it. Thanks for the information.
It sounds so cool. I think probably I'll get one. I love that electric sound so much. It's an electric guitar we need electricity.
Thanks 🙏👍
Cheers Jagercaster
Love it! Stay Classy!!
Thanks kylelaulo 👍
NOICE!
One of the tastiest playings with this pedal i found so far.
I was on the hunt for that pedal for ages and found one today for 75€ wich was in my price range.
I love it can "freqout" even with cleanish tones.
Glad you like it Elrondo! Cheers for the compliment 👍
That price is amazing. Where did you find it for that much?
@@lw1391
I picked it up used here in Germany at Ebay Kleinanzeigen, which is like Craigslist.
Brilliant…thanks!
Thought it was Elliot Randall playing there for a bit.😉 Lovely stuff Paul. Bravo man, bravo.
I really like how you didn't over use it in the intro jam. Im not even into blues, but it was truly beautiful.
Well thank you Patrick! I’m delighted you liked my restraint. Cheers 🍻
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Restrain and sustain, my dude 😂🍻
Cool video and Scottish accent is the coolest accent in the world. cheers from Vancouver, Canada. Ed
Well thank you chopshop! Appreciated
Awesome.
love the outtake! :D LOL
Seeing you with a pedal board is weird. The Paul I played with never used them.
Awesome video as per. 😂😂🎼🎶
Thanks Al. Yeah, I’m really enjoying having it. Sometimes I don’t step on any pedal, but it’s nice to always play through the board, just to follow certain moods and textures. Cheers Al, it was great to see you in action the other night. That Takamine is taking on some lovely patina! If only it had a working battery 🤣
Great playing Paul…you should have a crack at Steve Hacketts solo in Firth of Fifth using this…
bravo!
Great sound…thanks..
Thank you Jerry
I'm getting one for sure. I've been thinking that before when you've talked about it, but now it seems a must for me to have on the board! Great video again Paul. I love that blooper at the end. Just like watching myself there 😂 You sound really good playing the blues, and I wonder if I heard some new added fast phrases to your repertoar along the way? Amazing tones captured by using your phone. Cheers, Thor
Thanks Thor. Yes, I’m quite the fan of that pedal. You can even coax deliberately weird sounds out of it by using the toggle switches to cut out the dry signal. Cheers Thor
Loved the out take Paul. I think you said a bad word tho, oh well your only human after all.
Someday somebody gonna drag u out.u are just the best smooth soulful player I'm aware of.
Ah, thank you John! Comments like that make it a pleasure to post videos on UA-cam 👍
Wow, all looks like the Star Ship Enterprise to me. I think I'd better stick with my Amps🤣 nice playing as usual.
I have been meaning to pick one of these up. I got a ton of use from the "feedback feature" in an old boss GT6. It did the feedback thing great but if you held the note just a bit too long (over 3 seconds) the note would go crazy (which could also be a good thing.) I have some songs that could never be replicated without that old GT6 feature (which is now in a landfill somewhere in the USA.) The Freqout is a lot more convenient to use and has more features and sounds great.
Cheers David. Wow, the Boss GT6…. That makes me nostalgic for an old Boss GT5 multi-effects that I used to have.
I realize it’s about the Freqout, which is cool. I still have to say, Paul, that - for a guy that isn’t partial to the Stratocaster, you definitely got yours to talk. I was trying to focus on the Freqout, but I was transfixed by your playing and the guitar.
Ah, thanks man! Appreciated
Gladly, Paul!
Hey mate
I dont subscribe to many guitarists
Just doing my own thing
But your pretty chill
Im subscribing
Well thanks Treace, delighted you like my wee videos 🍻
Great video Paul. I really like the FreqOut, only very slight issue I find is the buffer in it, curious to know if you have found the same.
It’s most useful set up like you have it, on momentary mode so the feedback kicks in when you press and hold the switch. However, on momentary mode it has a buffer always engaged (which makes sense I guess, it has to be ‘on and listening’ all the time in case you press the switch!). But if you have certain drive pedals after it which don’t like to see a buffer (especially transistor based drives and fuzzes), it can make them sound fizzy and harsh. The workaround is to put it in latching mode (where you press the foot switch once to turn it on, then again to turn it off) because this uses true bypass. But 2 issues with that: it makes it clunkier and more fiddly to use, and you hear the sound of your tone change when you turn the FreqOut on, before the feedback even kicks in.
Only seems to be an issue with certain drive pedals, I have a Page too and it’s OK into that. But it really changes the sound of my Hudson Broadcast for example, especially if using the green higher gain side. Have you found the same with your Broadcast? It’s really easy to test if it’s changing your drive tones, as you can just switch the Momentary switch on and off and you can hear the buffer coming in and out of the signal path. Have tried putting the FreqOut after the gain pedals to get round it, but the feedback definitely sounds better placed before gain.
Really enjoy your videos and playing Paul, keep up the great work!
Wow, I never even thought of that…. You’ve really made me think. Up to this point I’m not experiencing any negatives…. but I’m going to test that today, using your method of testing. Cheers David
Sounding a bit more jazzy this time around Paul.
I like it.👌
Never been a Freqout fan myself, but then again as a metal guy I prefer a srceamin amp in my face anyway.😁
I do appreciate your discretion in the use of your cherry pedal.
It's a lot like eating sweets, they may taste good at first, but if you over indulge you're going to regret it.😬
You know the saying about too much of a good thing.😉
I will say that the Kingsley Page sure acts a bit like a BBE by softening the overdrive in the Freqout, that was an interesting effect in the quick demo.
Very good tips for the folks watching.🤙
Thanks GW. (And I think my 2 week delay on reply is a new record 🤣).
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Yeah I thought maybe we broke up and you just weren't going to tell me.🤪😂🤣
Actually, I think a month is the record back in the early days.
Hope you are having a good weekend.🍻🤙
@@gwbuilder5779 Yes, had a peaceful weekend, cheers. I’ve been busy creating a wee tune for my next vid 🤣. Hopefully I’ll eradicate the mistakes by this coming Friday. 🤞
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Like they say...
Let it be.🍻🤙
I get a similar effect from my flute by overblowing and getting a harmonic on the ass end instead of on the attack.
after the Attack and Decay by EHX this will be my next Pedal... to provide a little bit of magic
That is some damn sultry playing. I feel seduced and I'm not even mad. I'm less than a minute in too. Awesome playing.
Well thank you Josh! Appreciated 🍻
Hey Paul, always really admired the tones and your playing I think this is the first I've ever heard of you using a pedalboard. Any thoughts of making a video of sharing what you are using on your full board?
Thank you Jaik. Yes, I always play through my pedalboard then into the amp….. but often the only pedal actually ON is my Strymon Flint reverb (and I love the Tremolo too). That said I have a few overdrives on the board, a Delay and Feedback creator pedal (Digitech Freqout). To get a view of the board you can scroll through to the 2:00 mark on my recent vid “Why do I record with an iPhone….” ua-cam.com/video/L1Nen-dx0K4/v-deo.html.
I’ll also be talking about my board on my next video actually, because it’s about a new pedal I’ve just received. 👍
That's cool. I'll be looking forward to watching that. Keep on the wonderful playing ☺️
Im looking at sustainiac pickups in a schecter
But theres another guitar id prefer.. my dream guitar that doesnt have sustainiac....
Its a 7 string headless delo by kiesel , strat style body
And so im torn between the two and i can only buy one....
Perhaps this pedal could make up for not having the sustainiac....
Im curious does the button click in at some point
Or does it sort of go in a bit and back up when u let go if that makes sense ?
Id prefer it not to click in...
And now im thinking about the cutout your showing 🤔
So it completely cuts out the note after said amount of time ?
Sorry for the questions
Hi Treace, cheers for watching my vid. Yes, I’m pleased to confirm that YOU control when the note (or feedback) starts to latch on, via the pedal’s rotary knobs. For example, I could set it to latch on quite slowly, so you hear a few seconds of the note decaying normally, and then it latches. Or I could go the opposite extreme and set it that as soon as I play my note, the pedal starts to latch immediately. You can also adjust how ferocious you want to howl…. by adjusting the pedal’s Gain knob. In addition you can tweak the pitch of the feedback. If it helps, here’s a link to a video I did showing how you can “play” the pedal ua-cam.com/video/wdVaP2zVCI4/v-deo.html
I hope Line6 will add something like that to the Helix line, it feels a little crazy for me to bring a sustainer guitar for just one song (Heroes - Bowie).
Good point! Right folks at Helix, I hope you’re watching!
This seems like it would be a great pedal for recording as well. Getting a live feedback sound without having to crank an amp in a studio setting would be nice. By the way, of all of your guitars do you feel most comfortable playing your Tele Paul? Cheers
Hi David. I gotta say, I think you’re right about me feeling most comfortable on my Tele. Whilst my sunburst Les Paul is my overall favourite guitar, it’s still not as comfy and consistent as that Tele. I’m a very lucky boy to have it.
I don't have a board! I actually have several petals, but seldom use anything other than a BOSS or Keeley compressor.
Already got the pedal,I use it with my katana, almost the same settings. What is the pedal with the tube?Great vid as per.
Thanks Neil. Yes, the pedal with the tube is my Hagerman Overdrive. I thinks it’s a 12 AX7 tube and it’s fantastic to beef up a Stratocaster 👍
Really great Paul! The Freqout is very expressive I will be sure to check one out….Could you do a similar video on the Kaffir Lime? How do you run the volume of the pedal for breakup when the amp is set at bedroom level?
Thanks Pete, and sorry for late reply. Yes, good question. I find the Kafir Lime is very quick to get hairy…. unlike it’s sibling, the Tone City Sweet Cream. So I have the pedal’s gain knob at 9 o’clock, maybe even less. It’s particularly good with my Les Paul…. quite a honky, mids rich kinda pedal. I love it.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 thanks Paul that helps, do you have the guitar volume wide open or do you variate that? I find I can’t get past 3 or 4 on the guitar before the amp becomes bedroom unfriendly so difficult to get any real breakup..the Kafir may be a good choice if it breaks up early.
Yeah, most of the time I’m full up on the guitar. And so my amp is set fairly quiet 😊
@@paulstaffordcook8799 thx Paul that helps :)
I suppose its the vibrato while its fading out. Even synth pedals glitch out in a bad way when you bend. Not in the cool unison way. I wish it did but they just don't. The tracking for the tuning must be trying to first harmonize a second note exactly like yours and then put the effects on it. And when you bend it has to choose between the note your on or the note your bending to with no in between flow. It needs a progressive note system not in notches but totally 100% chromatic like a fretless and i think that would really help. Same thing with octave pedals. Or at least have double memory for notes and add all the microtonal notes in microtonal scales. So the machine has a closer to the actual note to effect during a bend.
Hi Paul, that "synthy whine" sounds like a feedback harmonic to me. It sounds quite convincing at this end of the UA-cam. Is it not so in the room? Love the out-take! 😂😂
All sounded good to me too. Maybe different in the room as you say
Thanks Kevin, delighted to hear it sounds ok to you. It’s maybe just me being over critical. Cheers 👍
Love this Paul, the same track you played on your green tube pedal vid. Is it an original piece?
Wow, here was me bringing back an old tune that I thought “nobody is gonna recognise this”…. but there’s no fooling you! Well recognised 👍. It’s a backing track from UA-cam, but the lead playing is one of my little creations. Delighted you like it. Cheers Ts and Cs.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 haha even more impressive! Masterful and wonderful playing Paul. Keep doing what you're doing, love your stuff mate! My pleasure!
Thanx Paul...
Can it catch/latch 2 notes at once?
Hi Jonny, sorry for late reply. It tends to pick a dominant note (or the loudest) and just feeds back the one.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 I was watching Lyle's Psionic amp tech chnl (in Memphis) testing a blonde Bassman kit build he brought to life and man oh Manischewitz this is classic feedback at it's best IMHO
Hot damn. I need a cigarette after that opening jam
Thanks Duane 🤣, delighted you liked it. Cheers
How do we get you an Uncle Larry on a live stream? I’d imagine the the crossover audience is huge.
Thanks Cody 👍. It’s such a thrill to see my name mentioned in the same sentence as players like Tom. Appreciated 🙏
The Beatles took multiple dozens of takes for all of their songs, I think many people don't fully appreciate how recording artists polish their masterpieces before presenting them, so cut yourselves some slack, we can't produce miraculous results instantly!
Thanks Michael, good point!
But you are a guitar hero!
made me laugh
Feedback at low volume? Yes please. Off to Ebay I go.......
Paul....Great stuff. You making mistakes? Great outake...
Thanks Andrew 👍
Now there's strange techs, musicians spent years and millions trying to eradicate feed back and they bring a pedal out to simulate it. 😂😂😂😂👍🥃Respect to you mate.
