That’s what I’ve always thought with Geddy and his ability to sing and shred the bass the way he does. They’re all just so incredibly talented, it’s so inspiring.
He always had to think at least 16 bars ahead. His thinking in that regard influenced me more as a bass player than Geddy did, and Geddy was hugely influential to me.
I watch this solo at least once a month. This man was a percussionist--I would've loved to have seen him in a symphony orchestra and a Toronto jazz club.
One thing I always love about live Rush performamces is how Geddy and Alex always look like they're having a ball, smiling and clowning and having fun playing music, and Neil always looks like he's disarming a bomb. RIP

Do you mind if we Americans can claim him alittle as well since he did live in the United States lol? In all seriousness, he's a Canadian first but he belonged in the hearts of all of his fans all over the universe.
I don't like to say someone is the best... more like the best for that style, or band. I think Buddy Rich was the best at what he did, John Bonham was the best at what he did, and Danny Carey, is, well he may actually be the GOAT. If he is, it's thanks to Neil and the ones that came before him.

Ive been drumming for 27 years and a lot of my drumming is influenced by him, Nick Menza from Megadeth, Mike Portnoy and Vinny Paul from Pantera.
Tore me up for days. Grown ass man Crying. He meant a lot to me and i never met him. Now he with his Late (first) wife Jackie amd Daughter Selena.

I used to read Modern Drummer back in the 80's and 90's..here is an awesome article about Neil's trek to Africa and meeting a tribal drum master! Drumming has the power to unite people, no matter how varied their language or cultural background might be. On a recent trek through Africa, Neil Peart had a singular experience that proved just that. "I was in Gambia, walking through a small village, and I heard the sound of a drum. So of course I was curious! I looked into a compound and I could hear the drumming coming from a curtained room. I walked up to a woman doing laundry in front of the room. She could see my interest in the sound, so she waved me to go in. Inside I found a young, white missionary from a nearby Catholic school. Sitting across from him was the commanding presence of the local drum master. He was attempting to show the missionary how to play any kind of beat. The missionary was trying as hard as he could, but he wasn't having a lot of success."
After a time the drum master, frustrated by the missionary's lack of ability, noticed the other man who had come into the room. The master had no idea who this person was, but he thought to himself, "Why not see if he can play?" According to Peart, what happened next was fascinating. "The drum master gestured to me to try and play a rhythm. So we began playing together, and he started smiling because he could tell I had a rhythm - maybe not his rhythm, but a rhythm of some kind. We were playing and playing, building the intensity, and little kids started coming in, laughing at the white man playing drums. Then a few women came into the room, and everybody began dancing to our beat! The master and I even started trading fours. It wasn't a spoken thing, but he could tell that I would lay out and listen to what he was doing for a certain amount of time, and then he would do the same. It was just a magical moment." When they finished, a confused and startled missionary ran up to Peart and asked, "How can you do that?" Chuckling to himself, Neil politely responded, "I'm in the business."
I collected every magazine I could with each band member. And "The Masked Rider" was an excellent and eye opening book :). Great line and "punchline" . . . _I'm in the business_ :D.

In the nicest possible way, it's difficult to truly appreciate what this man is doing if you don't play drums. The whole waltz-ish section he plays is inhuman. If the camera didnt show his left foot doing the tambourine I wouldnt have believed it. The name of the game with drums is limb independence, but this is a whole new level. Beyond a whole new level. Good God. Dude is incredible.
All of what you said is spot on. This among a million other things that Neil both did, reintroduced into the modern drumming lexicon and just plain invented is why he is probably the most name checked drummer from all other great drummers as a HUGE influence.
Amen...simply watching and listening to this does not validate what this wonderful human being has contributed to the world of music...as an individual performer and as an integral part of the under rated band known as RUSH! Heart felt sympathy to the band and all his family and friends

what many may also not realize unless you are a drummer is that at 10:42 in this video Neil breaks the "timing" boundary. the time signature he starts to play with his feet in the 3 beat pattern is different than the time signature that he is playing with his arms and he plays them both on top of each other. To simplify the example of this try tapping either one of your feet at three even beats per second and at the exact same time tap either one of your hands at four even beats per second. If you can pull that off then try to add your other foot and hand into the mix. It's truly un-human. If you listen closely you can hear his foot timing wavering and is off on occasion by just milliseconds but overall he pulls this off amazingly. He talks about teaching himself how to do this in his couple hour long video called "Anatomy Of A Drum Solo" If you want to get into his mind this video is a must watch.

I knew a lot of rock bands when I was younger. EVERY drummer wanted to be Neil.

I like many grew up with this band and each decade they changed with the times and stayed very relevant. Yes his technique and musicality were amazing, but for most of us drummers out there, the most outstanding part of this solo is at 10:43 when he starts soloing in 4 over 3. That's 4/4 time with his hands and 3/4 time with his feet. Unreal.
Dave Theman Dave Theman I’m not a trained drummer, but when I play along to “Warsaw” by Them Crooked Vultures, Dave Grohl seems to kind of have the 3/4 and 4/4 thing going on later in the song.

If I remember correctly, Neil mentioned in Taking Center Stage that he really struggled early on to do this, even in it's simplify form. It took him years to get to this point. And I don't say this to diminish him at all. As a matter of fact, it's just shows that even the greatest have to work hard to achieve that greatness. And that's what I admire most about him, his dedication to the art. His passion and perseverance to learn it, perfect it and then share that with us. And I know he would be the 1st to admit that he hasn't perfected it, but I'm not buying it Neil 😉. We love ya Professor. Thanks for the inspiration. 👍❤️👍

10:42 he starts playing a waltz with his feet. Boom-Tss-Tss. Which means his feet are playing in 3/4 time and his hands are playing literally ANYTHING on top of it!! Total limb independence.
The 3/4 is based on the drum also waltzes by Max Roach, he stated this in an interview. Terry Bozzio does this as well.
prickyX And Neil mentioned it took him a while to be able to play it along with his stick work. It was so encouraging hear him say that he had to practice and work hard to learn to play that because he’s so good that it’s easy to think that everything comes easy to him.

@@ThomasLuongo i was playing a gig the night that Bruford and Moraz were in town, wish i could have cancelled to watch them play. I had the Flags LP, but it was ages ago that i had that disc and cant recall if it was on it? Seems all my influences are leaving this mortal coil... Buddy Rich who I saw in 84, Peart in 76, Bonham, Ginger Baker. At least Ringo, Bruford and Collins are still with us.

Exit Stage Left did it for me too, the year I graduated high school. To this day it's still my favorite album of all time. For the year 1980 Exit Stage Left was a masterpiece of live recording from the POV of both musicianship and live recording.
First album for me was 2112 and I was done. From that point forward no one came close. And Niel was the highlight always.

As a long time Rush fan (I’m 61), it is almost impossible for me to contemplate a musical world without Neil. RIP GOAT!
According to his book, Roadshow, Neil was very unhappy with this performance and felt the solo he did in Prague was MUCH better. It's a shame they didn't record a few of his shows so that he could pick the one he thought went the best. But, I daresay, nobody can catch the 'mistakes' he made in this! Neil's a legend and his star will shine far longer than any of us will be here.
Also I'm not sure if you knew but he was also the primary lyricist of Rush. So on top of being such a dynamic force behind the drums, he also is responsible for the lyrical content of their songs.

Yes! His lyrics were so much deeper than the contemporary music coming out during the same periods of mid-70's, early 80's and beyond. Just thinking about the sci-fi concepts behind the 2112 album is a great example - it blows my mind that he was coming up with this story in his early 20's!!
Yes, he was an avid reader and used very complicated words (for Geddy and Alex), so they went like: "yeah, you do the lyrics". The man was a teacher indeed.
As a drummer, I lost a piece of my soul the day Neil passed. But, it’s such a pleasure to see you guys smiling and laughing and enjoying his work. He would’ve accepted no greater compliment.
Realize the middle section of the solo, when Neil is going crazy with seemingly random work on the toms, he is keeping a rock solid 1-2-3 waltz beat with his feet. between the single bass hit and 2 tambourine sounds. It's like the top half and bottom halves of his body are disconnected. Absolutely insane talent and countless years of dedicated study practice of his craft.
RIP Neil, you’re still inspiring beyond the grave, I was watching a rush live video on the tv and my 4 year old daughter was kinda banging away and tinken away at random objects on my table with two pencils and she saw you playing and she lit up and ran over to the tv and held her pencils to the sky and yelled “I wanna be a drummer!” And as she trotted away she looked at me and said “hahaha I farted!” 😂😂😂 thank you Neil Peart for your contribution, greatnesses and wisdom and most importantly your talent, your inspiration and your life!

He was considered the best rock drummer of all time, and dude still had the humility to go take lessons. A true artist. There will never be another like him. Neil was a beautiful anomaly.
One thing to point out. He does that long Drum solo while doing a 3 hour show 2 to 5 nights a week.

Neil Peart taught me more than any other person in my life and we never met. He lived a tremendous life of great accomplishment and unthinkable tragedy. His great gifts will live with us forever and feel very fortunate to have lived in the same generation as such a brilliant man. Celebrate the life, have a good mourning.

He's a local Toronto boy to his Ontario Canada fans. I grew up with Rush and I'm 57 now. They were the soundtrack of my high school years and beyond.
I'm 36, and grew up with Rush. I live in the southern US. Rush changed a whole genre of music.
Yes! I just turned 60, and I remember seeing RUSH on Don Kershner's Rock Concert, or In Concert....one of those concert shows that was on TV back then, and fell in love with them! It was 1974 and they were promoting their first album. I saved my money and the next week I went out and bought the first RUSH Lp. I was 14, and have been a life long fan. I was so shocked when I heard he had died. It's sad, but I thank the stars for giving us Neil for all those years, what a beautiful person he was, and he'll never be forgotten, ever.

I was just a very young girl when RUSH started. I was only 9 years old girl when I picked up the sticks and started teaching myself to play the drums. Neil Peart was one of my most favorite drummers back then and still is today. I'm a 54 year old grown woman today. And even if I was still playing the drums myself today, I still would not be able to play any where near this good as him. I have some other favorite drummers, but Neil Peart is by far the best. He's a drummer of drummers. His technique is above and beyond. Talk about knocking it out of this world. RIP Neil. Rock on in Heaven.

Many musicians inspire people musically. Neil inspired me far beyond that he took me to literary places, and I read books, and took in philosophies I may not have otherwise known. Most kids I knew in the late bell bottom days were all about Zepplin and I was to to a point, but it was us nerdy kids who fell hard for RUSH....and he inspired a few bookshelves of works I read that I first heard about through RUSH, and because of Neil's intellect. He was one of my heros.... to be sure. TRULY a RENAISSANCE MAN

Thank you for your words. Over the years, Neil invited us into his beautiful and complex mind through his music, lyrics, interviews and books. It was all so inspiring that it left small voids of curiousity, and an appetite for more writings. On one hand, he was often disturbed by violations of his privacy, but one the other hand, I can see clearly why people were drawn to him. I am not an avid rock fan that screams and chases tour buses around, but I always dreamed of a subtle "by chance" encounter, maybe somewhere out in a small town diner or gas station. I would have to act like I don't know him. A request for an autograph would cut the meeting short, but at least I would have shared a moment with a man of absolute larger-than- life greatness.
I’ve imagined that same scenario myself a few times.

It never dawned on me that there are human 'beings' that have had that experience. It would be like being excited and in awe of life like an infant for your whole lifetime. Wow!!

My favorite thing about Neil, among everything, is that there’s never any wasted motion with him. Just like there was never a wasted second in their music. That’s why there’s not a such thing as an “unreleased” Rush song

Neil has been the center of inspiration in my heart ever since 1975. Over the many years of change Neal's poetry has taught me so many things. I call it Art Rock. I have listened to Rush over and over and I still hear something new. Neil Peart. I miss him and I have been feeling that shadow that crosses my heart again and again since January 2020.
He also wrote 7 books, traveled by bicycle across parts of Africa, and traveled all over North America via motorcycle.
I'm glad you mentioned that. I just found out that, for anyone with an Audible membership, they are offering all of his audiobooks FOR FREE until 28 Jan 2020. I will definitely pick up Ghost Rider and maybe I should just get them all.
My cousin was a drummer and about 35 years ago, he told me Neil Peart was "the greatest drummer in the world."

So much awesome! That hand crossing at 17:00 is a total Buddy Rich homage. Buddy was the master of that technique. Lots of Buddy Rich influence in this vid. I saw you guys noticed Neil switching to traditional grip at one point - another jazz influenced thing. Super killer!

Neil solo in 1994's Buddy Rich Memorial, "Cottontail" is one of his best solos in my opinion.
Freddie Gruber his drum teacher in the early 90's taught him to play that way. Incredible his thirst for knowledge that one of the best drummers wanted to take lessons to improve. Incredibly humble.

Neil playing on the burning for buddy tribute would be a great one. But definitely some buddy rich, one of Neil's heros.
He was cuing all those horn sounds & whatnot at the end with his feet btw
Negative Ghost Rider, he was hitting his electronic pads to get those sounds.
One thing I love about Neil is he looks so calm playing his drums, like its an everyday thing for him l.

Saw them live 4 times, could have seen them 100, and would still end up leaving saying “how can he play like that?”. He was one of a kind.

Greatest Drummer Forever, Ever
It took me days before I could even listen to another Rush song without crying, after hearing about his death. It still causes me to choke up a bit watching him play :( More so then his playing, was his dedication, personality, intellect and poetry. He wrote most of Rush's lyrics and many of their later (80's-90's) songs pulled me out of some dark places and rough times. He was my inspiration as a musician and my comfort in life. The most upset I ever got form a celebrity death before this, was Robin Williams and then, it was more just sadness at the loss. Neil, though.... made me cry... and still does :( :(

I agree. They should do Xanadu. That is an incredible song. However, I bet George & Ryan would have a hard time keeping a straight face when they hear of the "honey-dew." Great song though.

Buddy Rich was Neil Pearts major influence when it came to drumming. The end of this drum solo where it is all jazz, is his tribute to Buddy Rich.

At the 14 Minute mark he is showing his feet and arm separation technique. He perfectioned the ability to make feet play a totally different rhythm than his arms. Feet slow, arms quick. He had mastered his craft. Best drummer that ever lived. RIP Professor Neil Peart.
Mike Portnoy is about the only drummer who has ever reached Neil's level.

@@JohnnyTheGreek91, overall abilities. I am basing this from being a drummer myself and understanding the technical side of things. In reality, Mike can drum more accurately and faster than Neil ever could. I still prefer Neil's style, but accept Mike is the most technical drummer in history. As far as music goes, though, again, it's Neil for me every time.

No way is Mike Portnoy better than Neil Peart. But again this conversation is pointless. It's like comparing Michael Jordan to LeBron James, or to name two other prog drummers Mike Mangini to Gavin Harisson. I like Harisson more but does that make him a better drummer than Mangini? Of course not.
@@JohnnyTheGreek91 Kind of a moot point guys. And those two were friends anyway. MP had mad respect for NP. I think we should just appreciate the character of NP and not judge him or anyone else against others. There are plenty who would make the case that Gene Kruper or Buddy Rich were far superior but it's kind of pointless... Just enjoy the contribution that these people have made... And the wonderful soul that NP was...
