His worst freestyle beats your best written beat.
Neil Peart would have been Buddy Rich’s favorite drummer. There. I said it. 😎🤘🏻
As a Canadian I am extremely proud of Rush's 54 year history. This legendary band has one of the most amazing and loyal fan bases in all of rock and roll.
Neil will not only be remembered as one of rock's greatest drummers (top 3 of every list) but as an outstanding lyricist.
and the boys will be remembered as one of the most skilled but also best natured and funniest bunch if rockers ever. People always say how did 3 guys make so much noise but u could also say how did 3 guys make so many people laugh and smile at the same time. Never saw a gig either live or on YT where they weren't having fun.
Neil was a percussive genius, masquerading as a rock drummer. No one has, or will match his brilliance.
#RIPProfessor
During his drum solo he starts a beat with his feet, called “ drums waltz too” . It’s to show he can hold two beat or time signatures at the same time
For us Rush fanatics, watching reactions for anyone "new" to Rush, especially if they are musicians themselves, is always special. For most of us it's like we have this great secret that we can't wait to let someone in on. Really looking forward to Rush week, also a new subscriber. Rush on!
Well said!
I'm digging it!
I love this comment
I tell all these drum critics the same thing:
1. You may be a "drum critic", but, my man, Mr. Peart critiques YOU, not the other way around! If your critique of him were unfavorable, then, sir, YOU would be the one in the wrong! But, having been good and properly mind-blown by his performance, your appreciation of him just welcomes you into the club, kind of like losing your virginity!
2. Another drum solo performance you should check out is Alex Van Halen's performance from the video of the Van Halen concert, "Van Halen: LIVE; Right Here, Right Now".
3. Another drummer you need to check out is Alice De Buhr from the 1970's band Fanny; I can't point you to any specific performance, but she was *damn* good in her day, and, Fanny, a band very few people nowadays even know about, had a far bigger influence on the music industry than they were ever given credit for: Fanny was, documented, but unrecognized, *>The First
I keep thinking "If I had a pound for everyone I've heard say: 'There's only 3 of them...'; I'd be a very rich man".
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Big Rush fan here... There's no way in hell a drum teacher has listened to any Rush songs. I love your reaction videos Andrew, it feels like we're watching a video together, but there's no need to claim this is your first time listening to Rush. Otherwise, change your mug to something like "living under a rock." Your choice 😉
“He’s not just a drummer, he’s a musician, composer” is the best way to describe Neil
He is The Professor, best that ever was, and I got to see him 4 times in 3 different countries, I have been blessed beyond measure!!!
GOD BLESS NEIL PEART!!!!!!!
Seen them myself.
3 times in Erie, Pa. God bless.
When you hear thunder on a stormy night it's just Neil playing drums for God 😁
Nice Bill!
I love this! and will think of this the next time it rains here in Arizona.
Whenever I watch these reaction vids I just want to shout out "yes and we've had Neil for 40 years, we've been so lucky, now catch up!" Then I just smile and wallow in it.
Rush Played @ my High School in 1974 In Mississauga, Ontario and I was immediately hooked on their mastery of their Instruments and technical prowess. Every time they played hometown Toronto I bought tickets. My Sons are now 31 and 34 and they came with me from the age of 10 up to their mid 20's. The Greatest Rock Band from Canada Period, and I would venture to say that is an agreement by every other Canadian artist that hails from Canada. The Band, The Guess Who, Tragically Hip, Triumph, Chilliwack, Bryan Adams, et al were Giants as well, but Rush topped them all IMHO.
i just sat here and watched a few of these reaction to this video and I just end up crying...Neil is truly a musical, spiritual gift of nature and I will miss him to my core...
Can't wait to get to more Rush Eric.
Check out my Rush playlist!
Neil explained how the big band hits at the end were done. They were inspired by Count Basie. He created his version in a studio on a Synclavier which he made samples of and assigned to various electronic pads around him. So he was actually manually triggering those samples himself.
That is, until they just play one o clock jump
RIP Neil Peart! Best band to me of all time! I'm so thankful I seen Rush live once on the R40 tour in Toronto Ontario
Nice! 🥁👌

Neil wrote the lyrics to their songs. His lyric writing is incredible as well
And Xanadu... Damn. Pick the live version from Exit Stage Left ... so worth it.
LVGelfling This! Xanadu from the Exit Stage Left tour is a percussionist’s dream come true. He uses almost every type of percussion instrument there is. 👍🏻

HAHA. Nice Ben!
I'm surprised drum teachers haven't seen his awesomeness (and Rush is one of the major underrated bands out there), but i dont mind as we can get these awesome reaction videos!
YES!
Rush wasn't a thing here in NZ
@@AndrewRooneyDrums yeah I'm feelin' that, here in eastern europe it's sadly kind of the same, everyone knows Metallica and Iron Maiden, but Rush is somewhat in obscurity.
I never get tired of that solo! Neil and Rush were amazing!! May Neil Rest In Peace. He is now in Heaven with his daughter and his wife.
Two things you didnt hear in this solo. 1. not once did he hit the sticks together by accident. 2. not once did he hit a rim by accident. Total control at all times, a true master. ty
And he was ill during this concert
Neil was a genius ... and I not mean that lightly, he wrote books, he was an intellectual... beyond the drum brilliance... which is obvious. thank you neil.

Ok...I'm 51 and yes, I have heard of Rush over the years, but - and this is hard to admit - I had NEVER listened to them till last week. R.I.P. Neal Peart...this guy is arguably the BEST drummer I've ever heard! To think Rush is/was only a 3 piece band...it's amazing the music they created. You want more proof...listen to Tom Sawyer :)
I'd vote for a Rush Month. But a Rush Week is a good start. :-)
HAHAHAHA!
I was lucky enough to have been able to not only see him live but to sit within a stones throw of him and a few rows up and have full visual of his drum solo. Absolutely unbelievable
Neil Peart described this solo as his tribute to all kinds of music from tribal, classical, rock, to jazz. For me, walking to the Rush concert was knowing from the albums that you were about to see a drumming tour de force; a genuine, true legend. And you didn't really need a solo to prove that fact.
That's why his nickname is the professor he was a brilliant writer and drummer and all-around musician. These guys were very tight together. I know Nell. Pert took some time off and went back to the basics and took Moore drum lessons he was extremely innovative that's why everybody copies him. He's definitely one of the great three drummers.
Yes he's very highly regarded among drum geeks like me for sure!
Although it suited him for many reasons, the title was bestowed upon him because of his resemblance to the Professor from the TV show Gilligans Island.
Neil was the youngest-ever member of the Modern Drummer magazine readers poll Hall Of Fame before he was thirty. In 1994, twenty years into an already legendary career, he decided something was missing from his playing and went back for lessons with drum guru Freddie Gruber.. He completely revamped not only his physical approach to the drums, but the configuration of his ENORMOUS drum kit. If you focus on the very center if his acoustic kit here, you can see that at its heart, it's a simple four-piece kit with a kick-mounted ride, just with a ton of shit added to it. His ride cymbal used to be way out in right field.
You can't be The Professor unless you never stop learning yourself.
He’s the best drummer period. Sorry Bon Scott.
The best part for me is that Neil wrote many of the songs lyrics. Also, many of the orchestra sounds in the solo are triggered from the e-kit and several e drums mixed in his kit. Such talent! RIP brother. 🤟😎
I think this comment was largely missed and a lot of drummers out there didn't appreciate that there wasn't a track. Well done for pointing this out.
The best drummer to ever grace a stage, every single tone and sound triggered by Neil not one sound on tape his talent was endless
All the effects are triggered from the kit.
Crazy Jeff!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I had the privilege of examining his R40 tour kit up close on stage. I can assure you it was an amazing experience.
Don't Stop Believin is one of Journey's worst songs. I've always hated it. There must be something wrong with me lol
@@jeffjohnson8444 Whew. That's touching the hem of the garment there, brother.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I scrolled to see if anyone had mentioned this. They're triggers. He spoke of them frequently. I'm perpetually confused at how they work with cymbals though.
Welcome in the Rush family... If you like what you've seen and heard so far, try those : La villa strangiato, The Spirit of radio, Subdivisions, Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, Limelight...and the full 2112. And by the way, we defenitly want a Rush week 👍 Thanks and have fun
What a treat to see a drummer discover Neil for the first time!
I can't tell you how many times I've seen this solo and am still in awe. Rush was my first concert ever and seeing Neil inspired me to become a drummer. He has touched so many lives. RIP Professor. You are dearly missed.
The best part is you know they won't be disappointed in the least!
The portion he's playing 3/4 with his feet (tambourine sound left foot); how do we not talk about how he layers different time signatures over top of it with his hands. 3/4, 4/4, 7/8 with his hands, whilst playing 3/4 with his feet the whole time. Also I didn't read all the comments so maybe it has been pointed out; but the portion at the end - until the full big band starts playing with the ending video clip, it's all Neil playing those brief "band" sounds with triggers via the vDrums.
The 3/4 section is a tribute to jazz great Max Roach who did a famous drum solo in the 60's called "The Drum Also Waltzes" where he played a 3/4 waltz pattern with his feet on the bass & hi-hat while soloing over it with the rest of the kit.
I saw him talk about how long it took to be able to do something different with each limb and keep track of what each is doing. He said it's something that takes an extraordinarily long time to get perfect. He spent a lot of time his whole life learning every thing he could about the drums.
The section you are talking about was inspired by Max Roach, and I believe Bill Bruford also did his own take on it. Neil puts his own spin on it by using an electronic tambourine sound on 2 and 3 with the left foot. Here is something else though. If you listen closely, there is a slight increase in tempo throughout the section.. an accelerando. Now you might think this is an error, except that in every performance I’ve seen of Neil doing this, he always accelerates the tempo, so I believe it’s intentional. It’s Neil’s way of upping the ante- it’s hard enough dividing your attention between a rhythm in 3 with your feet and contrasting rhythms with the hands. Now try adjusting the tempo of your feet at the same time. Just an amazing drummer with incredible attention to detail.
The individual arm and leg coordination absolutely mind boggling.
How could be a drumm teacher and never heard RUSH. Every drummer in the world had listen Neil Peart for at least one time
Not in NZ Marcelo
I have so many things to say about Neil. The first thing i can say is he is a huge influence on my drumming. Secondly, i am blessed to have been influenced by him at a young age. I learned how to play “Spirit of the radio” at the age of 15, and i feel like learning that song elevated my skills tenfold. When he died, i feel like a piece of me died. In my opinion, Neil is the most influential drummer of our time. His legacy will never die.
he's the teacher all drummers had but no drummer even knew they had.
Hell, i'm not even a drummer and i still get ideas from his playing are you kidding me
Who wouldn't want Rush week! Enjoy the discovery!
YESSSSS
For the past 40 years + he has been for many the worlds best drummer - writer of lyrics . I first saw the band in 1975 .
Mr. Peart clearly makes all of the "drum teachers" who review his drum solo, end up as students😂😂
Rush week is a great idea... Neil was the bands lyricist.. on all but the first album, fairly certain. Can't pick out a bad Rush song... Musts... Tom Sawyer, YYZ, La Villa Strangiato, Limelight, side one of 2112, Sprit of Radio, Subdivisions, Malignant Narcissism, anything from Clockwork Angels... And please be sure to pic at least one live performance from Exit Stage Left and one from Rush in Rio. Honestly, the only song I wouldn't suggest live is 2112 and only because it gets cut up from the original... And if you're able to watch during the reaction, the 2112 comic book video is pretty amazing. Done well, artwork equally amazing.
Thank you!
Please don’t forget Working Man-Live in Cleveland. Time Machine Tour 2011.
😁
You should check out YYZ live as well as the studio version. The Rock in Rio version is the best IMHO. 300,000 Rush fanatics singing along to an unstrumental that's primarily drums and bass is definitely worth checking out.
Stephen Hodges
First time watching it brings a ‘chill to your spine’. 😊
YYZ in RIO if you want to see 40,000 people SING along to an Instrumental.
For all of us fans who were lucky enough to witness this live, you can see why we were so upset when Neil left us....the pure joy that Neil Geddy and Alex gave us will never be repeated and thats sad
Neil was a multi genre percussionist and was an excellent jazz drummer. I was lucky enough to see them in concert 3 times and each one was more amazing than the previous. RIP Neil.
So sad you didn't grow up listening to Rush, they made such a great impact on me as a teenager, watching your clip on Neil's solo brought tears to my eyes.
That's great Gerry. Yeah some bands don't make certain countries
"this guys not just a drummer he's a musician!"
LMAO
HAHA
Couple things on this one from a drum perspective, man. First off, on the ending, all those horn triggers come from the Roland TD pads on his right, and that Yamaha pad between his hi-hat and snare. After the Tom closeout, the right pad triggers the end which is Cottontail - which was his tune for the Buddy Rich tribute a while back. He started ending his drum solos with the ending of Cottontail after that tribute, and Rush put together that awesome video package for the ending(which is why you see Buddy in that spot in the ending). I'm sad that Rush wasn't bigger in NZ, but I'm sure all the followers are clamoring you for your Rush week! You're going to see that Taylor Hawkins and a LOT of us rock drummers blatantly steal Neil's ride patterns. An example of a blatant steal would be Taylor's ride pattern on the chorus of "Rope" which is a direct steal from the pre-chorus of "Subdivisions" which I hope you review asap! Can't wait for your dissection on this one, brother!
"Subdivisions" is probably my all time favorite Rush song! His work on the cymbals especially is a technical wonder!
By the way, this was normally done midway during a 3 hour show.
Adds a great dynamic to a show :)
Randall V I was fortunate enough to have been able to see a show that had Primus opening for them. It was *glorious* hearing my two favorite bass players in the same night!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums then they often would do a couple acoustic songs like resist with just Alex and geddy after the solo to let Neal rest and the world’s balance to resume
@Randall V I saw Mr. Big open for them two tours in a row. (Presto and Roll the Bones).
Lol, the beginning for you, down the rabbit hole. Discovering Rush and Neil Peart, congrats. They are musicians musicians. Kings of time signature changes. Sometimes you will be blown away by the music that 3 people can make. Each one is a master of their craft. Welcome to the rabbit hole. Enjoy it.
Yes!
I've got a whole Neil Peart playlist you may enjoy :)
As a Canadian that has followed them all my life and seen them live, if you have your “Rush Week” you will discover a body of work that has three elite musicians at the top of their game from beginning to end. Go deep into the library, you won’t be disappointed!!!!! Lucky you hearing it for the first time!!!
Andrew! Its a great solo, but the real genius is seen/heard in the structure of their songs; architected far more like classical pieces (or jazz) than any other musical genre. Check out YYZ, The Trees, or virtually any of their tracks and you'll hear this clearly. No single verse of the music is repeated identically. Each has its own interplay between the bass, guitar, and percussion. Its astonishing. Put aside the brilliance of his lyrics, and Peart, Geddy, and Alex are still far beyond genius. Add to that the lyrics and RUSH is beyond anything comparable or classifiable. (Hence their lack of love from the industry). I hope you spend a tad bit of time listening and maybe do a video about this. Thanks!
The greatness of Neil goes another level if you realize he writes all the lyrics to Rush songs too.
Neil Peart is known as The Professor. The Frankfurt concert is, in essence, The Professor giving a lecture.
Excellent Ryan!
And He writes the lyrics....what a talent you will be missed.
Yes, check them out. Today is Neil Peart day - his birthday. RIP The Professor

Yes Andre!
Neil Peart es uno de mis bateristas favorito, lamentablemente ya no está con nosotros 😭, lo más notable es que le daba pudor que lo elogiaran, por lo mismo siempre rendía tributo a Budy Rich. Saludos
Awesome band, did not appreciate them when I was young, I now know how truly talented they were.
Buddy Rich was so impressed with Neil Peart. Buddy Rich's Widow chose Neil as the drummer for The Buddy Rich Memorial tribute concert and album. Neil was the youngest drummer inducted into the modern drummer Hall of Fame.
And the video is well worth watching.

Peart could play like Bonham....Bonham could never play like Neil. ...end of story.
GET HELP!!!!!
One other thing: Buddy Rich was indeed one of Neil's idols - along with Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, and others. He was invited by Buddy's daughter in the '90s to perform at a tribute concert for her father and Neil later produced two albums of performances with many other famous drummers (Burning for Buddy 1 & 2). Here's Neil playing with Buddy's big band, including a signature solo on a scaled-down jazz kit: ua-cam.com/video/aT9333XiR4U/v-deo.html - many of the rhythmic motifs will be familiar to Rush fans. In the late '90s, Neil was introduced to drum teacher Freddie Gruber who helped Neil change his entire approach to drumming and, for a time, Neil completely switched to standard grip from matched grip playing (he later would alternate, as the song or solo dictated). Here's an interesting short clip of Neil with Freddie: ua-cam.com/video/L0mt06puXko/v-deo.html - That someone of Neil's caliber would open his mind to learning how to improve on the instrument after more than 30 years of playing is remarkable. He was a fascinating person - and sorely missed.
Thanks so much Michael!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums It was Neil's disappointment with his performance at the Buddy Rich Memorial Scholarship Concert that led him to produce the "Burning For Buddy" project to redeem himself, and it was noticing Steve Smith's new level of mastery during the recording that led Neil to ask him how he'd improved so much, which led to Steve introducing him to Freddie Gruber, which led to Neil Peart 2.0.
I've read critical reviews of Neil's first tribute concert. I don't recall exactly, but it was short notice and he practiced for the wrong song - so it was pretty much ad-libbed. IIRC he made sure he made up for it on his later efforts.
RIP Professor. Would LOVE to see you dive into more Rush!!!
I will def do more Rush!!!
I was lucky enough to see RUSH in the 80s for the 2112 tour, that is one concert I will always remember.
Great memories Donald
@@AndrewRooneyDrums absolutely Andrew and I saw alot of concerts in the 80s,
And another thing is that - - Neil wrote about that very solo in his book “Roadshow ~ Landscape with Drums”, which was recorded in Frankfurt Germany on their R30 Tour. He said that though the solo was basically good from the audience’s point of view, he was not pleased with that particular solo performance. Said he was tight/tense and was battling a head cold. He has always been overly critical of many of his performances, always a perfectionist. And even said that he had to methodically learn all his drum parts, that it just didn’t come naturally to him. So he practiced and practiced and practiced until each part was mastered. And what he was trying to convey to everyone was that if you want to be good, you must put an enormous amount of time into learning it and you must continue to do so [because you really cannot ever achieve perfection. You can only strive for it.] His influence will live on for decades.
"This guy's not just a drummer... he's a musician"
As a guitarist, I am howling with laughter at that line
hey now, don't poke jokes at the drummers, if they could understand what you said they would be very upset!

I saw Rush for the first time live at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1984. Obviously aging myself. I don't drum: I'm a guitar and keyboards guy, but my innate and profound admiration for Mr. Peart is long ongoing, and deep felt. There is no other drummer that I admire more: not even Bonham... no other than Neil. At the onset of my exposure to drumming, with Neil, I realized what an impact it has on the song construction, the very basis of the grounding of the presence of the band as a whole. (And we'll leave the talk about lyricist for another venue.) I credit him with my appreciation of the percussive side of rock music, my enjoyment of the syncopation, and the illustrious use of non-syncopation he uses in multitudes of their songs. Check out countless examples of time changes, eerie tempos, and outright frightful descents into madness that are Neil Peart's trademark rhythms. Peart exemplifies the top tier of drumming, but as he said: "I wasn't talented. I just worked really hard." Note to others: everything is achievable.
I am so looking forward to delving back into your archives, and your further ventures into percussion. You, along with others, have gifted me with a renewed surge of creative possibilities. I can only emulate the mastery that you represent; I pledge to recreate the machsmo that you so inspire. Long live percussion.
Saw Rush live. The Professors YYZ solo was so special. Heaven got a new drummer the day Neil passed away.
So strange, but cool, to see a drummer reacting to Neil Peart for the first time. Definitely do your RUSH week! The studio version of Tom Sawyer, the live version of Xanadu, Subdivisions... If you want to end the week with a bang then 2112 is the way to go.
Thanks Norm!!
At the end, he's triggering the horn hits. It's not til 1 o'clock jump starts that it's actually a backing track.
And even that backing track was triggered by Neil from one of his pads.
Amazing!
That's crazy Clay
Andrew Rooney Drums What really gets me is how he’s playing his big finish straight through the fermata at the end, yet still manages to stop exactly with the track ... and there’s no click. His internal clock is unparalleled!
Speaking of click track, Neil doesn’t play to one live (with the exception of a couple of specific songs), yet they play along to sequences/samples, and the mixes and light sequences are automated. Let that one sink in for a minute :)
@@Bass17yl "Mystic Rhythms." 👍👍👍👍
Don't usually watch these reaction videos but I couldn't resist the idea of a drummer that never heard Neil Peart! I'm a guitar player that saw Mr Big open for Rush in 90 for the presto tour. Hands down I was there for Neil over Alex Lifeson, Paul Gilbert, and Billy Sheehan. Neil is definitely not just a drummer. His style of drumming is downright musical! Read his book if you get a chance! He's an incredible human and even in typing this i noticed I didn't put him past tense. RIP Neal. The world's a better place because you existed
Best drummer EVER hands down! RIP Professor.
Ever notice that Animal had no problem squaring off with Buddy Rich and Dave Grohl in a drum battle but never went near Neil Peart?!
lmao
There was a reason they called Neil “The Professor” PHD in music
Everyone should see the documentary - Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage. If you aren't a fan before you see it, you will be one after.
Can't wait Bryan
I was blessed to see Rush live 3 times - R30, R40 and Time Machine tours. Always came away exhilarated by the level of energy, the musicianship and pure musical entertainment that Alex, Geddy and Neil gave to their audiences. True professionals, true gentlemen, and true performers! Godspeed Neil, thanks for the memories guys!
All members of the band understood each other and got along as good friends, each with a vital role in the whole song, album, concert and friendship. How many bands can you say never had major disagreements over a multi decade career? They understood that the music was king, not the rock musician sex and drug lifestyle.
IMO, this isn't even his best solo. You literally haven't heard anything yet.
The Rhythm Method, 1992 or 1994. Neil on the dark blue Ludwig Super Classics, his first ever single-kick kit with Rush. "90s dark blue Ludwig/doorag/goatee Neil" is my second favorite iteration after "1978 chrome Slingerlands/fu manchu/silk kimono Neil." LOL, Andrew has enough of a journey ahead of him just going through what Rush look like on stage through the years. Their stage get up from 1974 to 2015 is a history of rock and roll stagecraft all in itself.
Looking forward to it Nick!
LITERALLY haven't heard anything yet means a person/persons are literally DEAF. You understand what literally means? Peart is average, everything he did had been done years before and better. he's a nice drummer in a loud average band. Only Canucks think RUSH/PEART are the greatest thing since the internet.

@@tombombadil1262 YeS hE Is EvEn ThO i DoN't LiKe HiM personally. I'm more a Joe Morello, Elvin Jones, Billy Cobham, B J Wilson, Ainsley Dunbar, Louie Bellson and JOHN BONHAM man myself. Peart is a nice man w/ a HUGE DRUM KIT.
If you want the full percussion experience, live version of Xanadu might be best.
Yes, melodic is the way I think of his drumming.
And seemed like Neil was ALWAYS thinking. Voracious reader. Wrote (most of) the lyrics after he joined the band after the 1st album. Told his mom he didn't smile while performing because "it's hard". And someone will have the exact quote that it's like doing calculus and running a marathon at the same time.
Really looking forward to your insight.
Thanks Chuck!
I must have watched this performance 100 times or more. Neil was so stunningly good as to be uneblievable. As a guitar player, I would have traveled around the world to find a drummer this good. I would have loved to have seen him and John Bonham sit down and have a chat. Imagine that conversation. Wow!
A drum teacher listening to the professor on the drums. Very cool. And yes he is a Professor of Percussion. The best to ever pick up a stick.
Early horn sounds are not a track.
He played and sampled horn sounds for digital use. You should view "anatomy of a drum solo", he breaks down all the sections of this composition
It is good to see someone discover something that I have been following for over 40 years I love rush will always love rush the day Neil Peart past I cried and I’m a 55-year-old man and I don’t even know him but his music is the soundtrack to my life and I will continue following and listening to them until the day I die that’s the only way I personally pay tribute to their music. 🤘🏼
Excellent George!
Absolutely genius
