Neil Peart is the greatest drummer of all time. Hands down, 2nd to none.. Matter of fact. I felt bad the other day, When I saw an 8 year old, With a set of drumsticks, I asked the kid if he wanted to be like Neil, He said yes, I said kid? Just go home.. Because you're never gonna get there.. It was probably the wrong thing to say.😁 Then I said, Hey kid, Give it all you got.
In my estimation, there is no one close, because he was an intellectual genius, an avid reader and wordsmith. He was a poet, lyricist, and Philosopher. He learned to do technical stuff with the electronics. He was a true friend and loyal. His playing was fast, hard, and very technical. His battery of feels, and rhythms was comprehensive. The grooves and fills he played have been landmark and imitated by so many younger drummers....I could keep showering praise on him...
Neil started incorporating African drum rhythms into his solos after a cycling trip he took through Africa. He met a lot of villagers through his travels and learned to play some of their instruments and then he incorporated their sound into his solos. 🤘🤘🤘
There is a DVD Peart made called Neil Peart: Anatomy of a Drum Solo, where he talks only about this solo. The solo is called "Der Trommler". He took the name from the Grimm Brothers story "The Drummer Tale". He choreographed it to showcase the various different percussive instruments, including the marimba, electronic drums, and cow bells, as well as the different playing styles and rhythms. In the DVD, he breaks down each section of the solo and plays it at a slower tempo so you can see what he is doing. At one point in the YT video, you can see him switch from a more contemporary grip on the sticks to the more traditional jazz grip (5:33), and then back again. In 1991, he asked Steve Smith (former Journey drummer) what he had done to improve so much in such a short period of time. Smith told him about an old jazz drummer he had been taking lessons from, Freddie Gruber. Peart started taking lessons, too. Gruber told him to never limit himself to one style of playing, to learn and use them all. And, that's what he did. Now, what most people don't realize, is at the end, a good portion of the horns you hear are actually being triggered by Peart using electronic trigger pads and trigger cymbals. One half of the kit is electronic. If you look, you can tell the difference between the normal and electronic sides. Near his left foot is a three-way footswitch. Depending on the setting, hitting a trigger will either produce a drum sound, a horn sound, or both. Its why you will hear a horn and drum/cymbal at the same time. Not until the very end do pre-recorded horns come in. The rest are being electronically triggered by Peart with one hand while the other is used for the standard drums. He's the reason we all played air drums, but yes I taught myself too as a teenager. The Professor was amazing in so many ways. His interviews are just as fabulous.
The true GOAT🐐 I've seen him with the band Rush probably 8 to 10 times. You must react to more Rush songs. Red Barachetta, Tom Sawyer, Freewill, New World Man, Subdivisions. Enjoy 😎👍
I love watching folks do a first take on Neil's solo from Frankfurt. I'm sure you were expecting something fast and technical and forceful. Well, you had that 30 seconds in, didn't ya! That guy was a legend. He was called the professor because he studied so many different techniques and styles and seemed to master them all. Thanks for sharing!
I spent most of my 51+ years trying to convince others that Rush concerts were the best you could attend . Saw them many times. All 3 members of Rush are exceptional ,especially Peart.
This is not just jamming or freestyling - every note was written - A true composer and percussionist. The best percussionist that has ever lived, and you had the honor of hearing it. RIP GOAT
Neil Peart (Peert) always strove to give you a history lesson in drumming. He is a perfectionist when it came to this. His jazz influence was always present. His poetry and lyrics for the group Rush for over 40 years have had people endearing themselves to that band even to this day. Go down the Rush rabbit hole and you will not be disappointed. Geddy Lee (lead vocals, bass, keyboards and foot pedals) Alex Lifeson (Guitars, back up vocals, foot pedals) and Neil Peart will blow you away. great reaction keep it up. enjoy it all.
I love the drums, and in my mind he was the best by far, but it was the incorporation of his extensive reading, and his intellect into his lyrics that moved me. He was a poet, philosopher, and wordsmith.
Your reaction gave me goosebumps. I had the same reaction when I saw this for the first time now I like watching people discover his greatness and why we love him and rush so much in Canada
Phenomenal is the only word I can think of that even comes close to describing Neil. Extraordinary in every way! A native Son of Canada and sorely missed in the USA
At 54 yrs old this man has inspired me enough to buy stocks ,practice pads and now an electric drum kit ...Niel...sir I am learning to play your music, and promise to pass it down to younger generations
So true! He gave it his all. Even if you just consider what he did with the electronic effects alone...staggering to think what he accomplished in his life
RIP Neil Peart "The Professor" the greatest of all time (next to Buddy). He was not just a drummer he was a percussionist! I saw Rush 9 times they have been the soundtrack of my life. All three of them are absolutely incredible musicians. You should check out some more Rush. PS he also wrote the lyrics to all but a few of their songs. He wrote several books as well... a very intellectual mind. He is truly missed. 🙏😔
I missed my chance to see Rush in concert in the mid 80s, but all of the videos of them are awesome. And his name is pronounced Pee-irt, Peart. There will never be a greater drummer than Neil Peart. Also, this is all from the top of his head and through his heart.
One of the greatest performances of all time. I hope you do the Danny Carey pneuma drum cam, and Moby Dick by Led Zeppelin. Glad you got to this one though. So good. Glad you are posting again. Be safe. Much love.
The best there is, the best there was, the best they'll EVER be! He played that within the context of a 3 hour concert, with equally hard parts in every song. NOW THAT'S what I'm talking about.🤘🖖✌🎸🎹🥁🎤
I don’t believe in “Greatest Ever”, because these things are so subjective. However, his influence, talent, dedication and ambition to not just his craft but to his life are so inspirational and motivational that it stands to reason that these qualities aside from his drumming skill are at least in part what made him so beloved. He was a self described “outcast and geek” who never let his accomplishments drain his desire to learn, grow and improve. At anything. I had the privilege of seeing him live with Rush 49 times from 1982 when I was 12 through every tour culminating with their final tour in 2015 when I was 45. I like to think we grew up together in a way. He was a man who overcame dual tragedy of losing a child and a wife, within two years of each loss. He then rebounded to remarry, have another child and start a new life until brain cancer took him from them far to early. He deserved far better than he eventually received but his vapor trail and his impact will far outlast any of us. RIP, sir.
Lovely tribute! 52 year old! I covert via older brother WAY BACK. Had 2112 on 8 track! Used to tent the speakers over my head and lay down on the carpet in front of the stereo. Sweet Jesus I'm grateful for a life time of their music!
Neil was more than a drummer. He was a percussionist. A lot of rock drummers had huge drum kits but only used a few of the drums. Neil used every single one. R.I.P. to the GOAT.
The best there ever was at playing drums. RIP Neil. My idol growing up. I play myself and always wondered if I could ever be that good. I saw him 3 times with Rush of course, and it was just a thing of beauty to watch the master at work. God bless him for gracing us all with his lyrics and mesmerizing percussion. A true legend!
Neil Peart.
Admired for his talent, respected for his intellect, loved for his humanity.
RIP PROFESSOR.
Well said Sir
Fuckin' eh, my man.
R.I.P. Neil Peart, Best Drummer and best Poet (lyricist) in Rock and Roll! Period! Hands Down! Nuff said!

He’s the GOAT! Best ever.

Not drummer, but percussionist. He's not just playing drums.
CANADIAN BABY....Neil was 1 of a kind❤
arguably the best drummer the world has ever seen. his work in the Canadian rock band RUSH was monumental. ty for the fantastic watch
In my estimation, there is no one close, because he was an intellectual genius, an avid reader and wordsmith. He was a poet, lyricist, and Philosopher. Neil was hugely talented, and he worked his heart out at his craft. RIP
Neil started incorporating African drum rhythms into his solos after a cycling trip he took through Africa. He met a lot of villagers through his travels and learned to play some of their instruments and then he incorporated their sound into his solos. 🤘🤘🤘
I saw him do this 10 times live. This dude had everything in his bag, and then some. Once in a lifetime drum talent.. Nobody is better than Neil.
He will never be replaced.
We lost him and Eddie Van Halen in the same year. They are 2 of the faces on Music’s Mount Rushmore.
Just think of the band the good lord has Neil, Eddie, Lemme, Ronnie,
The foot control on those bass drums is insane!!!!
He was and is and always will be the Best of all time. The Goat!
The man was amazing…. And his tribute to Buddy Rich was the frosting on the cake. RIP Neil

Neil Peart was the professor of the drum kit. He's the reason why I learned how to play drums 🥁
Me too.
He's the reason we all played air drums, but yes I taught myself too as a teenager. The Professor was amazing in so many ways. His interviews are just as fabulous.

Meet Mr Neil Peart, a man who transcended us mere mortals.
R.I.P. Professor. I shed some tears when he passed. You can see why. He was an amazing man, drummer & Lyricist.
Neil Peart said once he didn't feel like he had some kind of immense talent, he was just relentless in his practice and study of his craft
No words can describe how great he was!
So true! He gave it his all. Even if you just consider what he did with the electronic effects alone...staggering to think what he accomplished in his life
Girl you looked gorgeous when you were shocked.

I don’t believe in “Greatest Ever”, because these things are so subjective.
