The Drum Master- Modern Drummer magazine Drumming has the power to unite people, no matter how varied their language or cultural background might be. On a recent trek through Africa, Neil Peart had a singular experience that proved just that. "I was in Gambia, walking through a small village, and I heard the sound of a drum. So of course I was curious! I looked into a compound and I could hear the drumming coming from a curtained room. I walked up to a woman doing laundry in front of the room. She could see my interest in the sound, so she waved me to go in. Inside I found a young, white missionary from a nearby Catholic school. Sitting across from him was the commanding presence of the local drum master. He was attempting to show the missionary how to play any kind of beat. The missionary was trying as hard as he could, but he wasn't having a lot of success." After a time the drum master, frustrated by the missionary's lack of ability, noticed the other man who had come into the room. The master had no idea who this person was, but he thought to himself, "Why not see if he can play?" According to Peart, what happened next was fascinating. "The drum master gestured to me to try and play a rhythm. So we began playing together, and he started smiling because he could tell I had a rhythm - maybe not his rhythm, but a rhythm of some kind. We were playing and playing, building the intensity, and little kids started coming in, laughing at the white man playing drums. Then a few women came into the room, and everybody began dancing to our beat! The master and I even started trading fours. It wasn't a spoken thing, but he could tell that I would lay out and listen to what he was doing for a certain amount of time, and then he would do the same. It was just a magical moment." When they finished, a confused and startled missionary ran up to Peart and asked, "How can you do that?" Chuckling to himself, Neil politely responded, "I'm in the business."

How about that solo when he suffered a heart attack and he had to go to the hospital to undergo quadruple bypass surgery. ua-cam.com/video/9esWG6A6g-k/v-deo.html A great solo despite suffering a heart attack.
Three, almost four months later, and it still doesn't seem completely real or possible. I hate the idea that I'll never be able to thank him, even in the smallest way, for the influence of his drumming, his lyrics, and the music he and his bandmates made.

I still get tears in my eyes over his passing. As a young kid in the 70's my cousin had the Fly by night album and I loved his drum solos, he and Bonham were my childhood idols.
Neil states that drum solo was to represent the sounds drums as they progressed. Yes, he is keeping 3/4 time on his feet while playing 4/4 and free playing on the rest of the drums. The horns you hear at the end are all from triggers on the set that Neil is hitting to activate them and the big band at the end is the Buddy Rich Band that he played with and did two records with.
Yes! It’s a Buddy Rich homage is at the end. Did you also think he was paying tribute to Gene Krupa on the first (at least) extended snare solo? AND, I think he was paying homage to Lionel Hampton (who was phenomenal) with the xylophone play. I never had those thoughts about this solo until viewing it tonight… I wonder if that’s what The Professor was doing?
This has to be one of the best reaction to a Peart drum solo I've seen. There's Peart and then everybody else. Peart's drum solos are a composition and very musical. It's not about hitting a drum, it's about creating music.
I appreciate that YOU appreciate (and noticed) the fact that he was multitasking both feet, independently, from all the other shenanigans up on top of the kit. Kudos! 👍

Agreed, but most of the internet videos of him drumming are from his later years so speed ebbs as you get older but there is NO drummer that can match his precision. The metronome got it's precision from Peart
The famous best drummer debate....let’s put it this way.....the only constant in this debate is Neil......everyone gets compared to Neil......I think that ends the debate. Best ever....hands down.
Right on doc nobody compares hes the best cause he mastered all types of drumming hes the professor and anybody who says bonham or moon are better are people who probably hate Canada or geddys voice
@@wichitadisciple9874 Carey might be the only one with the versatility to match Neil's. Probably at least as skilled as well. Everybody else is below them as far as I'm concerned
@@dsvet this is good… the video of Neil was Great. Not only was Neil’s spectacular, it paid homage to the great drummers and percussionists of the past. In the middle the snare solo was reminiscent of Gene Krupa - a phenom in his own right. The Xylophone parts are similar to what Lionel Hampton did as a soloist and with Benny Goodman. And then the video showed Buddy Rich and Neil played that as well. Awesome percussion solo (way more than drums here).
There will never be another Neil Peart. Simply the greatest drummer of all time. My kids and I were blessed to get to hear Rush live years ago. When he went into the drum break on Red Barchetta, I knew we were witnessing greatness.
The Professor is one of the best, if not the best that Ever lived. Neil Peart (P-👂-T) Thank you for posting. His loss was very sad. Great to see him make you smile & feel good. 🎶🎼😎🎼🎶

You need to react to Rush - Tom Sawyer. Neil wrote the drums part and it's so complex that he was happy when he got it right in concert. Also if you have Netflix Rush has a documentary on there called Beyond the Lighted Stage. Loving the channel, keep it up.
I wish we could talk personally about the professor. Neil was a student, teacher, mentor and artist of percussion that gave many of us the drive to strive to broaden our horizons in percussion. I'm so happy that you enjoyed this review and the respect you gave to our beloved mentor.
Yes, precision is the word. So happy to see you find your way through the Request List to check this out, Van! Truly amazing, and as I see in a previous comment, Neil was a lifelong student of his chosen craft. So much so, that you should search out an interview he did sitting down with his drum idol, Buddy Rich... Love your Channel, Peace!
Btw, Neil did a drum solo on all of RUSH's live shows. Check out his solos on the last live album of theirs (Rush R40). On that R-40 tour he did two drum solos and they are on the album.
RIP Professor, must have seen RUSH 2 dozen times and got to bring my daughter on the 40th Anniversary Tour. So happy she got to see the Greatest Drummer
Every time I saw Rush in concert at the end of Neil Peart's solo it always took a second to cheer because you were just in awe wondering what the f*** did I just see?!? I'm telling you check out Rush Leave That Thing Alone live.
like your reaction! one thing to keep in mind also - he's 51 or 52 years old when this tour took place, not some mid 20's in his prime guy!! Astounding when you think about it!
the answer to your question during the 'Walts Section' is yes about how he's keeping his time section with his feet and then playing a completely different time signature with his arms. It VERY difficult to do. So, just so you can get an idea, start tapping with you feet counting to three with your right foot on the one and your left foot on 2&3. that's a waltz. then when you get some stability with that, then try playing something with your hands. See how long you can keep your feet going in rhythm doing the same thing. It's a mind-trick.
I've heard people comment on his expression while he's playing (or lack thereof). His "expression" is complete concentration because he is doing insane things like this. Not many people can do 4 completely different physical things at the same time. Neil was the master, no doubt.
Watching you react to Neil Peart's drum solo it doesn't get much more real then that when you are in a state of disbelief!! If you are just now exploring Rush and their music I am so excited for you my good man!! You are about to embark on a journey into the inner working of Neil Peart's mind! And upon exiting stage left the spiritual experience you take with you will change you in ways you never thought were possible and you will have become a rush fan!!!
To paraphrase Geddy Lee "it's EAR with a P in front and a T at the end 😁 The thing about this solo is that he just about covers all musical styles of percussion. Samba, Africana, Jamaican, Jazz, and I'm sure I left a few out. In my eyes he's as close to Buddy Rich as they get. Speaking of, Buddy Rich is probably considered THE greatest drummer of all time. You should check him out. Heck, I forgot the video, but it turns out Buddy Rich played through a heart attack and completed his set😳🤯 Take care ✌
I have been listening to Neil my whole life ..Love your Expressions you make thru the Whole Drum Solo bro ...Neil is the Master ...Love ya n Miss U Neil RIP my Brother

Neil Pert Inspired all those drummers you mentioned. Rush, Yes, and King Crimson seem to be the big influences in modern-day prog even though there's a good 10+ year gap between rush and the other guys I listed.
Kind of blending 70's peart and Rush in with 80's, I think. A lot of this video I don't think would happen with 70's Peart; This much more 80's prog Rush.
Neil Peart was such a GOOD HUMAN BEING, AND, the greatest drummer to ever sit behind a drum kit. R.I.P Neil, we truly miss you dearly!! That laugh, that wit, his drumming, and his smile will be in my minds eye for the rest of my life!
The crowd going wild at the very end of the video brought tears to my eyes. I honestly don't think I've ever heard a crowd so excited! I can't believe there will never be another Rush concert. He is gone but his music is immortal.
Godspeed Neil Peart. Thank you for bringing joy to my life in your drumming and profound lyrics. Rest in Peace. Thank You @LFR FAMILY for sharing this. I am so happy this popped up in my YT recommendations. You were a pleasure to watch and listen to. I am subscribed as of this moment. All the best. Mitch 🙏
This is his "masterpiece". Just watched your yyz reaction from a few months ago. This drum solo, blows that out of the water this is ten years after the r30 performance.
I have seen this drum solo many times live as I am a huge RUSH fan, there is nothing like seeing and feeling it live! Not only was Neal the best drummer EVER, he was Rush's lyricist, he is an amazing author and gave many things to humanity. When Neal passed the world lost one of its most amazing humans! I have followed RUsh for over 40 years and in my humble opinion one of the best bands the music scene has ever known.
Tambourine on a stand playing with left fool. One of my most fave drummers of all time since I was a kid. I'm a 54 year old grown lady who plays percussions at times in my church choir. RIP Neil

My friend, I am glad you got to hear Neil Pert, one if the greatest drummers of all time. Your excitement is awesome, and you are watching one of the best, may he rest in peace.
We lost him in January of 2020, and as they said when his band was taken into the hall of fame, there was a small maple leaf surrounding his star, and a small 3 piece band from Canada changed music forever.
Neil did this in the middle of the show so Geddy could go and buy some baseballs signed by Nolan Ryan or Greg Maddux, and Alex could go and try to play golf.
The professor of the drum kit. There will be no better drummer / songwriter ever. Another favorite drum solo is the one from the "Exit....Stage Left" Tour. That drum solo is just purely inhuman. -Rush for life!

AND imagine doing this on a NIGHTLY basis on tour!!
You pronounced his name correctly, noticed the small details of his playing that most dont. Glad to see that
Neil Peart...gonna blow your mind!!! I haven't even watched this video yet, but I know his work...
Best drummer ever. Yeah you said his name right. Thanks for the great video
He was the Mozart of drums. Other can play harder maybe faster, but none could compose like he did
Agreed, but most of the internet videos of him drumming are from his later years so speed ebbs as you get older but there is NO drummer that can match his precision. The metronome got it's precision from Peart
The famous best drummer debate....let’s put it this way.....the only constant in this debate is Neil......everyone gets compared to Neil......I think that ends the debate. Best ever....hands down.
Jojo Mayer ua-cam.com/video/gKve3TyC0Sk/v-deo.html
Right on doc nobody compares hes the best cause he mastered all types of drumming hes the professor and anybody who says bonham or moon are better are people who probably hate Canada or geddys voice
I love Neil, I have since I was a little boy. With that being said, I think that Danny Carey passed him on the latest Tool album.
He has been dubbed "Your favorite drummer's, favorite drummer" because he paved the way in rock.
There will never be another Neil Peart. Simply the greatest drummer of all time. My kids and I were blessed to get to hear Rush live years ago. When he went into the drum break on Red Barchetta, I knew we were witnessing greatness.
In a way he was showing off, but not in an arrogant way. He's just showing the world why they call him the Professor.
The Professor is one of the best, if not the best that Ever lived.
Neil Peart (P-👂-T)
Thank you for posting. His loss was very sad. Great to see him make you smile & feel good.
🎶🎼😎🎼🎶
The Professor is showing off in Heaven now..
Moon, Bonzo and Krupa are impressed I'm sure... And Buddy is probably giving him shit for using matched grip!
Amen to that, amen!
Thanks for the smiles. Neil Peart was indeed, the GOAT. Loved watching your reaction. Cheers.
The Professor doing his thing and the orchestration at the end is controlled by triggers on his drum rings so contrary to popular belief it not just a tape but controlled by Neil a grand master R.I.P
After watching that performance there is nothing but respect that you can give to Neil Peart. That man was an absolute wizard on the drums.
What?....nothing to say? 😂....yeah...Neil tends to do that to people
My friend, I’m a long time drummer and The professor fan. Got to tell u your face and take on his performance was the best. Glad you watched and enjoyed.
He was my Hero.
RIP
You need to react to Rush - Tom Sawyer. Neil wrote the drums part and it's so complex that he was happy when he got it right in concert. Also if you have Netflix Rush has a documentary on there called Beyond the Lighted Stage. Loving the channel, keep it up.
I wish we could talk personally about the professor. Neil was a student, teacher, mentor and artist of percussion that gave many of us the drive to strive to broaden our horizons in percussion. I'm so happy that you enjoyed this review and the respect you gave to our beloved mentor.
Neil was more than a drummer. He was a master level percussionist.
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU TO EXPERIENCE THIS!!!! THE BEST DRUMMER IN THE UNIVERSE SHOWCASING HIS TALENTS. HE HITS EVERY DRUM IN THAT KIT.
Most appreciative reaction video on Neil ever. Well done, and thank you. RIP Professor.
Now you believe 👍...He ain’t showing off , he is showing you he is the professor. Heartbreakingly sadly missed...
"you know, I don't believe that"
Neil: Hold my drum kit
10 seconds later, his eyes believe.
Also, that solo was 90 minutes in to a 3-hour concert.
You'll never hear another better than this man!! Neil was the best and always will be. I enjoyed watching your reaction!
Perfect ending! No words need to be spoken.
You do anything with that much passion and focus for 50 years and throw in god given talent...you're gonna be great.
Agreed!
like your reaction! one thing to keep in mind also - he's 51 or 52 years old when this tour took place, not some mid 20's in his prime guy!! Astounding when you think about it!
This just warms my heart watching someone who doesn't know RUSH watch Neil do this. So glad I got to see this in person dozens of times
the answer to your question during the 'Walts Section' is yes about how he's keeping his time section with his feet and then playing a completely different time signature with his arms.
To paraphrase Geddy Lee "it's EAR with a P in front and a T at the end 😁
The thing about this solo is that he just about covers all musical styles of percussion. Samba, Africana, Jamaican, Jazz, and I'm sure I left a few out. In my eyes he's as close to Buddy Rich as they get. Speaking of, Buddy Rich is probably considered THE greatest drummer of all time. You should check him out. Heck, I forgot the video, but it turns out Buddy Rich played through a heart attack and completed his set😳🤯
Take care ✌
I have been listening to Neil my whole life ..Love your Expressions you make thru the Whole Drum Solo bro ...Neil is the Master ...Love ya n Miss U Neil RIP my Brother
Most people don't pick up the left foot separate time signature on the first listen, you have a drumming ear! Now you know the greatest ever.
You have no idea how big of a smile that video brought to my face. I absolutely love it when anybody gets to experience Neil Peart for the first time.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 thanks! The late great drummer peart baby was SICK ON HIS DRUMSET AND WROTE HIS OWN LYRICS..Rip Neil!!!! Did you catch him standing up while it rotated to do the other side of the drums?!?! Extremely good reaction!!!! WELL DONE 🔥🔥🔥😎😎😎😎 watch at 5:02 mark when the drums rotate..he stands up and switches to his back drums 😎😎😎😎
One of my favorite reactions from you. Neil Legendary Percussionist👋👋
Neil Pert Inspired all those drummers you mentioned. Rush, Yes, and King Crimson seem to be the big influences in modern-day prog even though there's a good 10+ year gap between rush and the other guys I listed.
Max Nichols facts!!
Kind of blending 70's peart and Rush in with 80's, I think. A lot of this video I don't think would happen with 70's Peart; This much more 80's prog Rush.
@@yodieyuh This aint an All the World's a Stage solo, that's for sure. 🙂
Neil Peart was such a GOOD HUMAN BEING, AND, the greatest drummer to ever sit behind a drum kit. R.I.P Neil, we truly miss you dearly!! That laugh, that wit, his drumming, and his smile will be in my minds eye for the rest of my life!
The only man I know who had a PhD in percussion! Thus the nickname “The Professor”. Simply the best!!!
RIP Neal Peart
Amen❤❤ RIP Neal ❤🇨🇦🇨🇦
The crowd going wild at the very end of the video brought tears to my eyes. I honestly don't think I've ever heard a crowd so excited! I can't believe there will never be another Rush concert. He is gone but his music is immortal.
To answer your question, yes. Hes keeping the beat with his left and right leg like that.
Jojo Mayer ua-cam.com/video/gKve3TyC0Sk/v-deo.html
my favorite drummer of all time...not saying he's the best but he got me into drumming. rip to the great neil peart...great video...thank you.
If you really want to get a feeling for this solo, get the DVD "Anatomy of a Drum Solo".
He does all that AND makes it look like it’s no big deal.
Yoda of drumming.
Neail is the best. This is his second best ever performance. His solo from Rush in Rio was just a bit better...in my opinion.
This is #1 for me. #2 is the solo from "Exit...Stage Left".
Adam Blakeney . This solo was actually from the R30 tour in Germany.
This solo was from the 80's on the Hold Your Fire tour....I saw the Birmingham AL show that tour.
Gary Wilson R30.
Neil Peart was out of this world. He was to drumming what Leo Messi is to football.
Tambourine on a stand playing with left fool. One of my most fave drummers of all time since I was a kid. I'm a 54 year old grown lady who plays percussions at times in my church choir. RIP Neil
That wasnt even a backing track at the end. All of the horns are samples he is triggering from the kit.
Fact! Probably was the toughest part to perfect
I read this comment right as I got to that part. Glad I got to see him years ago and his 10-minute drum solo
This is true
Mr.Funnybones 95 I saw him during the Moving Pictures anniversary a few years back. Truly blessed I got to see the professor work his magic on the kit.
Thank you for posting that fact...I had no idea. He was the greatest.
I'm glad you finally got here. You still NEED to listen to Led Zeppelin Moby Dick.
Love watching folks witness/discover his genius. RIP Professor
Neil Peart is what happens when a drummer can play a drum line better than the person who wrote it.
I picked the right day to click subscribe..lol RIP Neil great reaction by the way
Neil did this in the middle of the show so Geddy could go and buy some baseballs signed by Nolan Ryan or Greg Maddux, and Alex could go and try to play golf.
And from an evening with Rush... Change laundry loads / baste the dinner....lol
The professor of the drum kit. There will be no better drummer / songwriter ever.
Another favorite drum solo is the one from the "Exit....Stage Left" Tour.
That drum solo is just purely inhuman. -Rush for life!
He's switching genres on you. Yep, that' the Professor for you...
I've seen Rush in concert many times Neil's solos are epic
To your questions, the short answer is "yes, he's doing all that", Haha! :)
Enjoyed it all
Reactions was great. Thank you. 👍 ~Marz
godsmack drum battle
oh .. and they play the bongos too
Admired for his talent, respected for his intellect, loved for his humanity
if you love drums you gotta check out another legend. do a reaction to led zeppelin - moby dick live in madison sq. garden movie. john bonham is referred to as the hammer of god because thats what he was on drums
That is a must!
Neil Peart can do what Bonham did, but, John Bonham could not do what Neil did.
@@25newrush Like not die 10 years into your career.
Jojo Mayer ua-cam.com/video/gKve3TyC0Sk/v-deo.html
Then Danny Carey Must The Hammer Of The God Slayer, Because He Puts Bonham To Shame!
Creativity, technique, power, speed and somehow still musical. Such a truly rare combination.
U took your headphones out too early
Your comment @ 11:12 says it all "Precision" - glad you got the chance to listen to and appreciate Neil's work. I got to see them live eight times between 1982 and 2015, I definitely was lucky to see them over the years. My favorite band, period. Peace.
Yes my friend this is the late great Neil Peart the drummer for the greatest rock band that ever was or ever will be. RUSH.
Getting to witness GREATNESS!
The GOAT
I was blessed to see him 3 times in my life live.
RIP Neil
The only drummer I've ever seen in the history of drumming that can truly do for completely independent things with all four Limbs and still make it sound like music
