• 1:03 - She didn't _lift_ the van into the air, she hit it at the front-bottom and the van went up due to its momentum. She effectively placed a psychic ramp/bollard in under/in front of it.
• 6:38 - I've tried that, but not to test if I'm a Jedi, but because I didn't want to get up and go and get it. Still waiting for it to work. 😕
Except it can't have become airborne on its own, even if it did flip end over end it would not have come off of the ground.
You need to watch the scene more closely. the front of the van is leaning towards the ground as it launches and tips over landing on its roof behind the kids. What Eleven seems to have done is created a kind of psychic explosion right underneath the van to launch it over them.
It looks more like if the van got hit by a force hitting the front and upper side of the bumper/grill. So the van moving forward and getting hit with an "invisible hammer" would smash the front and the momentum of the van would send it flying.
This comment literally just negates every calculation in the video. This is probably why it never got released when Kyle was still at because science. It’s null. The “work” only lasts a fraction of a second. Therefore the power calculation is way off. Also, as you say, the force is downward not upward. So all assumptions about this scene are backward.
And assumeing the van is going 40mi/h (17.8m/s) it's initial KE is 348kJ. The calculations aren't useless as another reply states. It just means there are even MORE calculations to do, i.e. van's deformation, velocity as it flies through the air, etc. The balance of all of this will tell you how much force would have to be exerted by "L" as I like to call her.
What about when Vader held back the ocean in Jedi fallen order? Game theory calculated this as the most powerful physical use of the force in canon.

Wait a minute, what about when Rey and Kylo were pulling that First Order ship down form the sky? It was accelerating away from them, and they were able to stop it. For that ship to accelerate at the angle that it does, in the air, it would need a lot of horsepower, and Rey and Kylo grabbing the ship pretty much nullify that. And what about when Yoda lifts that massive metal pole to stop it from crushing Anakin and Obi-Wan in episode 2? I mean, that thing was at LEAST the size of 2 of the vans. And vans are mostly hollow. If we assume that the pole isn't hollow, it falling right on Anakin and ObiWan, and Yoda stopping it, holding it in the air, and dropping it would be a huge use of the Force, no? Also, in ROS, Luke is able to pick up the xwing from underneath the water, and lift it all teh way to the top of the cliff in like 7 seconds.
Also, this may be just me, but I always thought that Eleven applied "force" to the front of the van, which would explain the crumpling that we see happen to the hood and whatnot, which caused the van to flip over. Like, if the van was travelling full speed down a hill, and someone put an incredibly strong road block right in front of the van. Never thought she actually lifted it. Just my opinion though. this is not your opinion friend, it is a fact. We see the crumpling then when the van is over them Eleven is no longer using her powers (notice her resting facial expression) her face even scrunched when she applied the force. she weaker than Jedi case closed
Your last paragraph that's exactly what I was thinking and I had already mentioned it in a comment on my own before seeing yours.
all she would need is a slightly angled psychic wall that's leveraged in the ground and the van does most if not all of the work
XKCD used Yoda lifting the X-Wing because the prequels never happened, they were just a bad dream.
Joking aside, the reason I remember being given was that Yoda seemed to be putting effort into it, implying it was an upper limit on his strength in the Force. Of course, this ignores that it was a dying Yoda who may have been using the Force to keep himself alive long enough to train Luke (as implied in some Legends materials), and that he may have just been out of practice. (And, to put my own spin on it - he seemed to be sighing in disappointed, not straining.)
The pillar definitely exceeds what we see from the van example both in mass and how fast he decelerates it, and there are other uses of the Force such as the Force lightning in Rise of Skywalker that are beyond insane levels of power. (Legends makes even that massive lightning from Rise of Skywalker seem microscopic with Palpatine using planet destroying Force storms that effectively open a wormhole to reach their target. They were really trying to make Vader's line about the power of the Death Star being nothing compared to the power of the Force very literal.)

Thank you for always including the "On Screen" caviate. For those who have read the comics, side stories, and so on, there are plenty of Jedi who have feats of strength so powerful, Eleven looks barely better then a window fan when it comes to lifting objects.

Does this assume that all planets in the star wars universe have the same gravitational force as earth?
The way we see people walking around and breathing without difficulty (because of similar atmospheric density) says that the planets used in the movies have very similar gravity. Earth is not shown in said movies, so is irrelevant beyond being the place this stuff was filmed and shown.

Eleven throwing that van into the air seemed more like a temporary telekinetic blast from below rather than an actual telekinetic lift and flip, given how quickly the van was moving through the air the whole time. Telekinetic lifting abilities are generally shown to be much slower than blasts, after all. Sort of like some of the things one can do as Aiden in Beyond: Two Souls, where Aiden appears to blast objects around rather than actually move them himself.
To determine what elevens maximum power is, we just need to know how much energy is required to create an interdimensional crack since that seems to be the pinnacle of her capacities.
Create and then sequentially destroy while actively not just holding back but actually overpowering a seemingly godlike eldritch creature filled with rage directed at specifically her
And then we figure out how much energy it took for Anakin to hold back the embodiments of good and evil while having a conversation

Does Eleven actually provide all the "lifting energy" in this scene? When I watched it, it looked to me more like the nose of the vehicle was being rotated down and the rear up, meaning some of the horizontal velocity of the moving van is being redirected upwards with the front acting like a pivot. In this situation Eleven may add to the upwards to help it along but the energy required would be a lot lower to achieve the same outcome, no?

I think I saw it differently than kyle. When 11 throws the fan you can see the front of the van take heavy damage. I never saw it was her throwing the van but more of here hitting the van with enough force to topple the van.
Probably depends on which jedi. I can't really remember elevens power feats though as it's been a while since I watched the show. But even then I still think most jedi would slaughter eleven.

Well Starkiller casually stopped a whole imperial starship heading towards him in "The Forced Unleased" by using the force.
These things must weigh as much as multiple houses and the thing was moving pretty quick towards Starkillers face.
In the first force unleashed game starkiller pulls a star destroyer out of the sky, it takes him somewhere around 5 seconds to move approximately 400m. If you assume it ends up doing 300m/s (though should be doing over 800m/s (assuming it is constant acceleration) we don't hear a supersonic boom) then a star destroyer (weighing approx 100 million kg) will require 2.4 terra joules of energy (2,400,000,000,000J) and over 5 seconds that would be 480 Giga watts (480,000,000,000W) which is the equivalent power output of not one nuclear reactor but over 800. If my maths is right, which would be a little bit more.

looking at the sliiiiiiiiight deformation on the front of the van i'd have to agree with kyle on this one. she did lift and flip it herself. the momentum of the van is what carried it forward, but it was her power that caused the van to flip as well as take flight

Well, might is the key word. Though it's safe to assume that those pods are as light as they can make it, so they will use the least power in hovermode.
What if is literally my favorite book possibly ever published. My mom first got it for me when I was around 9 in an airport. 7.5 years later and I can enjoy it even more every day.
Watching that scene, it's more like Eleven popped the van into the air from underneath it rather than her lifting and moving it. Still an impressive feat, but not the same thing. Plus... I'm just going to go out on a limb here and say that I'm very certain and X-Wing Fighter weighs well more than a utility van. I don't particularly know the math, but you have to consider that the X-Wing was being pulled out of water and the van was flipped like a coin in open air.

Just so you know. She literally, with her mind, reached into another dimension and had physical interactions with an entity of that dimension. Oh yeah, she also closed a hole in reality with just her mind. I mean like Kyle said in the video, we don’t even know if that’s the strongest she’ll get. I’m sure if she wanted to she could break necks in another dimension. For someone who can find anyone anywhere breaking their neck on another planet wouldn’t be too hard.
@@termsconditions1513 Yea.. I think Vader would have no problem at all taking her out. She still has a hard time fighting the monsters from that other reality. Vader wouldn't. And his ability with the force was never tested to the max. Keep in mind she's still a child at the end of the day. Vader has had decades of combat experience fighting all over the galaxy. Her combat experience doesn't even begin to touch his. Nor her power. Sure she could become even more powerful if it doesn't destroy her mind. Those nose bleeds aren't a good sign.

Also he decent amount of his force powers when he got burned. Not to say he isn’t one of the strongest force users out there. And if it was straight up physical I’m sure things would go poorly. But based solely on power it depends. If it’s reaching through another dimension assuming they’re not on the same timeline then yeah she would win, but if it was face to face of course there’d be no challenge, at the moment. Vader can’t even do what he used to be able to so his max is lower, while she can only go higher, at the moment. It’s all fun speculation. Love this kinda stuff.

The more impressive feet of eleven is ripping apart the demegorgon. A creature that after being shot and stabbed had no intense wounds. So if you assume that it's tissue has the strength of something like Kevlar or more, that requires 3620 mpa to rip. Then the energy required to rip the monster in half ignoring the extra strength of the skeleton. Than the 9-10 foot tall monster would take around 105 - 117 kwh to rip. But what we see is more like an explosion that dusts the monster. So it definitely took more force. So if you let me guesstimate because I don't know the equation for dusting things I would assume it was around 1.5 kilotons of dusting force we saw. Correct me if I'm wrong.
In Terry Pratchett's Discworld, the wizards of unseen university know that if you get the "telekinetic" spell wrong, you can effectively, if inadvertently, crowbar your brain out through your left ear.

Just wondering, what about momentum? If something is moving at a decent speed and we apply a force (Hancock standing on the road). I'm not saying the calculation is incorrect but could it change the value?
Jedi can throw around star destroyers and noteably move singularities... (at leat in the EU) and even in Canon they can move around walkers the size of buildings.
Post-watch edit: On Screen is fine but still includes Mace throwing an AT-TE over a cliff, Vader lifting a AT-AT and some others. If you want to include the EU-Screen Yoda casually lifting CIS landing crafts and hundreds of droidekas is also in the air (as the droids were...).
I have another take on this scene. If you watch it, there is a good amount of energy conserved from the van’s original speed. Given that the van did not simply float up but flipped in the air, it seems more conceivable that she exerted force in a downward motion to the front of the van causing it to flip into the air and still travel at the same relative speed. I would submit that the downward amount of force to cause this was significantly less than what is needed to lift the entire van.
Wait a minute... didn't yoda say that weight doesn't matter when lifting things? you just need concentration. But with eleven however, she sometimes says "it's too heavy" and can't lift it.

11 did not use a ramp. The vehicle does not have enough speed to fly 20 feet in the air regardless of the size of ramp. What most likely happened is that a psychic explosion or a spring-like force under the van propelled the van upwards. The front end is heavier because of the engine, causing the flip. She did not provide a constant lift on the van, instead she provided a one-time force strong enough to lift the van 20 feet.
FYI ... Elle isn't lifting and throwing the van, at 50 second you can see she applies an angular downwards force to the front of the van that causes it to flip.
The van in the scene of stranger things seems to have hit something because the front end receives some significant damage. Could it be that 11 has used some of the forward momentum to move the van similar to a judo expert can seemingly throw someone that is heavier than themselves?

Basically, the Force IS telekinesis, The Jedi and Sith used the Force to provoke their enemies, or Jedi used the Force for knowledge. Eleven used her powers to spy on certain people in the series with a blindfold, like Force sensitives connecting with others through the Force, without using a blindfold, but can sometimes use her powers for lifting objects and using it against the mind flayer, so she is basically a Sith and Jedi, without a lightsaber.
Kenobi scene with all those rocks: rocks are very heavy and a large amount and he blasts them even faster
Lifting a van is one thing - let's not forget she vaporized Demogorgon! And to the SW Force... one of the siths (I don't remember which one) could create black holes. Ofc not in the movies, so I get the point here, but just to say, that telekinesis is probably one of the easiest and simplest things to do for both jedi and Eleven

Hmm... what about Alma Wade from F.E.A.R.? Her output of "power" may be higher if you played 'Extraction Point' and saw the heavy armor vehicle fly several hundred yards (give or take) and land on the guy you're supposed to escort. Plus how loud her scream is that it shatters windows.
Palpatine lifted an entire fleet of what looks like hundreds of Star Destroyers from underground on exegol. He also Unleashed a Sith lightning bolt that disabled the entire Rebel Fleet.
I'd be interested to learn what would happen if she applied her "185hp" into the bike pedals? Could the bike tolerate the stresses involved?

She never lifted the van, its kinetic energy as it was in motion, did that. She just put a low force in front of it, and the van hit that and flipped on it's own.

i love how in Kenobi vader pulls down a cruiser from taking of with ease also i know he said just on screen but there is plenty of cannon things in the comics that far outmatches even season 4 eleven also didn't mace windu in star wars the clone wars after getting crushed by looking at it by at least 100 tons of falling rubble and then lift it off him with the force or ray lifting a masive pile of rubble to escape the first order these are just the feats off the top of my head there is a lot more I'm sure
You didn't consider how the van's speed plus a slanted angle of impact would've launched it, only having to redirect force, not give new force, and since the front of the van crumples, I think this is the most likely senario.

Idk if anyone has said this but I don't think 11 lifts the vehicle, the front has an obvious dent, it looks like she simply hit the front and the van's momentum threw it over them.

Not a scientist or nothing, but I would think the water pressure around the x-wing would cause there to be more force exerted. Plus 11 only had to do an initial burst of force to fling the van, Yoda sustained equal amount of force to move the x-wing a fair distance.
