Being on the back end of my career, no not worth it. 15 years ago, I would have JUMPED at it. My Kapex in the shop does everything i need it to and MORE and have found that all my Festools were worth the investment as a professional cabinetmaker and millwork specialist. Pay once, cry once. Great overview!
I owned this saw but returned it for the larger Kapex- not because I hated it, but because of my situation. I found the dust extraction, especially with a 36mm hose, to be exceptional even better than its big brother. It’s a great saw when you’re on site and I realized that I needed the larger Kapex since I’ll be using it mainly in my garage/workshop rather than on site. I also realized that while I could swap batteries back and forth, it was better to buy it with the batteries and at that point, it made more sense to spend the extra and go with the larger one. One day, I do plan to get the smaller Kapex, but for now, the larger one fits me better. It’s not hard to justify the money because we all spend our money somewhere; however, a lot of us waste money but it’s in small quantities, that when tallied up, are huge sums of money. So buying a tool that will last you 10+ years, in many cases, prevents us from wasting money on things that only have a moment of satisfaction rather than years and years or satisfaction.
What a wonderful saw, one day I will buy a festool tool, one day. The problem is that here in Mexico they are even more expensive than they are in the United States due to taxes and import tariffs in addition to the dollar-peso exchange rate. Congratulations on your new tool.
Great segment, thank you. I have been thinking about that very same tool investment. I ended up with Makita's 8-1/2" cordless miter saw. Almost identical designs, however Makita is at half the cost with their 40 volt system.
How did you get it at half ($650) the cost of the festool? I cant find the makita for under $1050? And how is the dust pickup on the makita? I am looking for a 8-1/2" cordless saw and would love to not be locked into festools blade options, but dust pickup is important. If you really did get your makita for $650 please share the details.
@@TodaysCraftsmenMakita with batteries is $1100 cad and Festool with batteries is $1699 near me. What do you think I should get? I don’t mind price but I gotta get a cordless one
I love the festool gear that I do have but that’s a hard price tag for me. I’m not sure I’d ever get over that safety on the switch either, that really seems unnecessary but I’m sure there’s legal reasons for it. For installs though, being light and having top notch dust collection is hard to find in other saws. I’m considering getting a smaller saw for install work because as much as I love my 12” dewalt, the thing is a bear to lug around to job sites
I think it’s in the eye of the beholder! To us, and our specific intended use, it is but for many folks it’s not. We have a bunch of Festool stuff but most times we opt for another brand (typically Makita,) because the cost isn’t justified for the situation.
If I were doing that work as a business, yes. As a professional business I want the best tools I can get. As a hobbyist, I’d be out of my mind to spend that much fir a miter saw. That being said, my son in law has one. Nice saw!
I guess I'm out of my mind but I figure if I own my Kapex ($1,600) for 15 years, then it cost me $8.88 a month. We spoil ourselves all the time, at least I can have this when my current newborn graduates high school.
Looked at this today in a suppliers in Dublin. On further research it only compounds to max of 20mm of material at 45 degress to the right.(Thats just under 13/16 inches for the US lads). Really nice saw. Nice and light and if your fitting just floors day to day this is the one to go for but if your an all rounder I would look at something else. The one major benefit I will give festool is the warranty also covers theft once registered with festool under 30 days. Gives peace of mind but just not for me.
I could not do it. I have a pretty nice set up with my Makita 12 inch dual compound slider, the Makita pony style stand and wings I made. The saw and stand.....750? But hey, if it works for you it works for you. God bless you and keep on going.
How much is the stand because the saw itself is only $1,300 (including batteries and charger). Is the stand and any other you're running in that set up really $1,200?
@@TodaysCraftsmen price is what we pay, value is what we get. Car dealerships offer cars in payments so $30k-$40k doesn’t seem like a lot. In the same way, we discount our small wasteful purchases but it’s still a lot of money after 12 months.

Yeah, I'd spend the money if it I needed a setup like that for my work. I've got other Festool tools and they've all done as good as, or better than advertised.
No, but I'm old and I don't earn a living by woodworking. I have often wondered if the Festool brand is as expensive in Europe as it is here. My 12" Ryobi double bevel sliding miter saw does everything I need it to do. Granted the head only tilts one direction and the dust collection is abysmal.
I realized in 2020 I was spending $125 on fast food, just a couple dollars here and there. I took that money instead and invested it into tools I could use for my hobby and fixing my home.
I can't do it. To rich for my blood. I am heavily invested into Dewalt, corded and cordless and I don't own or have ever found myself in a situation where I needed a sliding miter saw.
I was about to buy this saw but then Festool raised their prices by several hundred dollars. At that point it would only be worth it for someone making huge profits from their work. Nonsensical for the average woodworker.
Great for tradesmen, too much for hobbyist woodworkers like me. I have lots of Festool, but Kapex is a bridge too far. Love to have it if it was gifted to me (anyone?) lol
It's a handsome tool, and arguably creates value for jobsite applications, but seems overkill in a shop scenario. Honestly, if I had $2.5k in the budget, I'd get a Bosch Glide (or even a Dewalt XPS) and put the balance towards a DF500, or you even get pretty close to paying for your Hammer 950. But she's pretty, that's for sure.
Definitely would be overkill in a stationary role. The UG stand is about $1200 of the $2500 price tag. You could build a nice fixed miter saw station for a couple hundred bucks with storage etc…
As with all of the products from Festool, that saw is way overpriced. Using it as a business write off may be worth it but for the average at home woodworker it's definitely not worth it.
I would disagree that they’re OVER priced. Definitely priced higher than most brands. If you look at other 8-8-1/2” cordless saws from Makita and Metabo they’re actually the same price. But yes, probably not a justifiable purchase for someone using it in a hobby capacity. The write off doesn’t hurt but for us the value is in the increase in speed and production as well as ease of use. Thanks for commenting!
I own the KS 120 Kapex and bought it for $1,600... I'm the "average at home woodworker" and it's definitely worth it. Why? Because you amortize it over 15 years and we are talking just a little $100 a year or $8.88 a month.

I’m not sure about their European pricing. My guess is that it’s similar but maybe slightly less because it’s easier logistically for them.
