I went and figured out which tool I used most often in my shop. It was definitely the miter saw. I got the Kapex with the vacuum so I could run it on my Domino as well. It is so dead-on accurate right out of the box and the laser is the best. As for handling long and larger pieces of wood, with just a couple of outfeed supports, I was slinging 12-foot pieces of 2 by 6 pressure-treated lumber for deck rehab with my old blade this summer. I have used it extensively for furniture, trim, and structural work, and after 14 years, that is only $100/year to own the best.

Great saw especially ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxxnKxcY0vm4xjW8xkPbjaHuKt10gr-wG_ considering how drastically cheaper it is than every other track saw on the market. Only things I would mention is replace the blade immediately, the 24 tooth blade supplied leaves a lot to be desired.

If you ever do work on site at a client's house, the Festool price may pale in comparison to the increased client satisfaction achieved by better dust collection keeping their house clean. Obviously this isn't a concern for a lot of trades people. But Festool is worth every penny for some of us on this basis alone.

I know this video is a bit old, but I just had to comment. Over the last five years, I owned a number of different sliding mitre saws, and each had its strengths and weaknesses. I wrestled over the last year or so with a Makita LS1219L in terms of getting square cuts. Long story short, I had the same issue many others had, which was the forward rails were not tracking parallel. I tried all the fixes and they all worked for a bit - follow up with Makita did not even get a response. So I bought the Kapex with high hopes and have been blown away - this saw was square and true out of the box - flip cut test was a perfect seam and the bevels were also perfect at 45 and 60. It was no doubt expensive, but the time I will save not having to continually check and recalibrate will eventually pay for itself. And just the confidence in knowing I will get the cut I need….just great for the mental state!

A few plus and minuses about the festool. The saw is lighter, and easy to move, but the mobile base sucks if you’re taller than 6 foot because the handle is really low to pull walking normally. It does setup at a comparable height to other saws. The working table is too small for larger trim, and depth and length of cuts is less than a good 12” slider and it’s not powered for bulky lumber. (it’s a small 10” tops), but the saw is really good for the average job with normal trim out. The bevel adjustment has the top to release and front handle to adjust which is way better if you work on job sites pushed against a wall, or have a bad back. No more bending to release and set. Last is the dust collection is so much better. I’m inside and I average a lot less cleanup daily. I’m specifically working in occupied condos and the spaces need to be cleaned every day. Also the saw itself doesn’t hold as much dust to drag down the hallway at the end of the job. Every saw has its advantages and disadvantages and the real drawback to the festool is you’re dumping around $3000 by the time you buy the saw, base and extensions and a few blades. As others have pointed out saws don’t teach you skills and a $120 single bevel 10” saw will cut just as well as the festool in the right hands. It’s more comparable to what you drive to work. They all get you there, but the festool has a lot of expensive options that aren’t worth it to most people and you can pay a lot of bills with the money you don’t spend.

I think I’m going with the Makita 12” front rail. I currently have a DeWalt 780 but I’m about to build a permanent miter station in the garage and the dewalt will hold off the wall too much leaving me less counter space in front of the rail system. I’m mounting a sawgear fence so I’m looking at 10’ of counter top space to the left of the saw to consider. The direct drive motor, dust collection and front release of the compound miter adjustment on the Makita met my three main likes for a saw that wasn’t $1500. I hope it lives up to its reputation.

The arguments you placed are valid, except aiming down the saw blade with a Kapex is pointless as you can dial your laser guides and forget all about creeping up on your cuts. I will admit it took me about 25 minutes to dial mine in, but its in use every single day.
You are right about the dust collection, the bigger and more powerful vacuum you get with a bigger hose will collect a lot more dust (this is where Festool is no longer a tool, it becomes a system).
I don't know if in America this is valid but in Europe we get 3 years theft protection and three years warranty included in the price of the machine along with 10 years spare parts guarantee.
In America I can see DeWalt is extremely popular, but I believe the quality of the tools sold on the US market is higher than what it is in Europe and I have tried all models of DeWalt and Makita mitre saws and they do not come close to the Festool quality.

Festool/kapex is quieter and cleaner, other than that, the man makes the tool, the tool doesn't make the man. I can use a coping saw and give a greenie with 100k worth of kapex festool products a run for his money.

Bottom line is if it's worth it to YOU. I don't get wrapped around the axle about tool prices, though $1500 IS steep. I think for a more apples to apples saw comparison with more similar features, the difference isn't nearly that high. For professionals, these are money making tools. If the features and benefits give you results and make you more productive, the price difference, even at this level, is not really an issue if the tool lasts and remains tight. Just like anything else, if you want high end features, you have to pay for them. While I can't justify that cost difference, justification is a subjective thing. One bonus of purchasing an expensive tool is that you will inherently take better care of it. Not so much if you have multiple employees using your stuff. I went with the Makita 36v saw. I like it, but it's HEAVY as heck! I plan on getting the Milwaukee M18 7-1/4 model this year for portability. Keep up the great work.
Edit: As for accuracy, I find that simply using a marking knife instead of a pencil eliminates the vast majority of inaccuracy.

You are comparing a fixed compound miter saw with a sliding compound miter saw. Compare the sliding Dewalt to the Kapex and it would be a better comparison. I have the DW717 sliding Dewalt, and the table is not flat, the fence is not square to the table, and the slide is not true. I’ve worked and worked on the saw to true it up. On a four-cut test, my Dewalt is out 0.042” over 11 inches. That was after grinding down the table, installing a wood fence with adjusting screws to square the face up. There is just no way to adjust slide. It would be fine for rough carpentry, but not finish work.

  • @stephanschouten8497

You need to know this....Festool is engineering everything in house with their development department! Dewalt is just copying existing systems. Also, Festool is all about safety! So that's the reason you cannot pick-up the blade gard easily by hand! ( Just activate the system with the triggers, release the power trigger, and you are able to put the blade on sight to a mark on the wood you wanna cut, so there is NO reason to pick-up the blade gard with your hand!). Also, because Festool is using ballbearings, the machine will stay accurate as long as the machine will live! Dewalt will start to feel loose after some years, the entire system that you use to cut the wood will start to move left and right, so making a true cut is no longer possible. Dust will clog up the Dewalt so much, that you have to treat it with lube, in order to be able to use it, and the motor is under powered. The thing is though, in all honesty, you CANNOT compare these miter saws to each other. The Dewalt is made for rough building work ( foundation work for instance) and the Festool is made for more finer and precision work, like cabinet/ furniture making. You don't start the Baha 500...with a Ferrari right?! :-)

I've used both saws for years, you should have had a dewalt slider for an exact comparison. The kapex is a shop saw, and the dewalt can stand up to the jobsite rigors. I will never buy another kapex, waste of money, but the dust collection is second to none. I just keep my dewalt 20v blower handy at all times to blow off the dewalt saw (when im outside). Inside it needs a chop saw hood to collect. I've tried the axial glide Bosch. It is by far superior sliding to both saws. Another thing to note is that the dewalt sliding arm sticks out the back, while the kapex slider is in the front, giving you a tighter space against a wall

Depends on what you want to achieve. The Dewalt is my choice because it has a 12” blade.
No Kapex can cut through a 3 1/2” newel without flipping it.
It can’t cut through a 10” wide skirt board on a beveled angle Front to back. The Kapex excels a bit on most other things by a small margin.
    Blade size matters.
And the price of $1999.00 Canadian really bites.

If I was new to the hobby or craft and thought I needed a Festool Kapex to add to my arsenal to improve my work flow I would seriously consider purchasing a Festool track saw and either a DeWalt, Bosch or Delta sliding miter box saw. Far superior and useful than owning one extremely high priced saw that has better dust collection. I do know why woodworkers and carpenters are recently so concerned with mitersaw dust collection and own a wood lathe, table saw, router, drill, etc.. Marketing seems to be the most obvious in my opinion. Making sawdust is no differ than any other tradesman in other occupations, everyone makes a mess in creating their art forms and aren’t as hung up.

I own a dual battery Makita and it does a great job catching 90% of the dust. But it’s kind of nice to have a vacuum that auto starts and stops with the Featool tools we already own.

The nice thing about the Kapex is how accurate it is with very little effort. For trim work, that is key so sounds like a no-brainer. I have also found it to be a very safe saw as it is hard to get around the blade safety guard and the built-in hold-downs are terrific. Maintenance is easy and the detents and lasers are pretty much foolproof as well as VERY accurate. The only thing I don't know is how well it holds up to getting slung around job sites.

From my experience, the DeWalt chop and slider saws are well suited for rough construction, not finish work - they're clunky and lack the finesse for finish work. The Hitachi SCMS is a much more refined tool for finish, as is the Festool. I would go on ebay and look for an original Hitachi sliding compound miter saw, not the new bastardized Metabo HTP saws. But if all you're doing is decks and rough framing, the DeWalt is fine.

Bringing a festool on site seems silly to me. My festool are never going to leave my shop.
I bought a dewalt miter saw after using a ryobi. The dewalt is unbelievably better than the ryobi. But in my small shop in which dust collection is extremely important and space is limited the Dewalt quickly became a burden. Working outside I love it. But inside the back facing rails make it so cumbersome. And it sprays out dust everywhere.
I gifted the Dewalt to my dad bc I have no room for it. I currently have no miter saw and I’m using a festool tracksaw saw in its place. I can’t wait to get a Kapex.
Once you have the festool system there is no going back. Everything is so beautifully compatible and user friendly. Relevant to my situation is that The Kapex and stand sits exactly the same height (90 nm) as the festool multifunctional table. So instead of having a bulky Dewalt miter saw folded in a mobile stand in my way while trying to maneuver boards around in the shop I’ll be able to slide boards across both level surfaces.
My two favorite brands are festool and Dewalt. For some things Dewalt is a no brainer over festool for me- like drill bits. I’m not gonna spend festool money when Dewalts are great. But once I upgraded to a festool carvex from a Dewalt jigsaw I will never use my Dewalt jigsaw again (inside at least.)

I am sorry, I usually like your videos, but this is not a good comparison. Talk about how the Dewalt is so simple, and there is more to the Kapex, yes, because one is a chop saw, the other is a slider. There is of course going to be differences. Not a brand thing, Just not a fair apples to apples compare. I agree it is pricey, but again, not a fair comparison, the Kapex has so many better features than other saws. Accuracy is number one to me. When I first got the saw, took it out of the box, cut a 15" or saw ply, took two cuts, with a stop, flipped it over, cut the other way, you can not tell it was two cuts. Dead on accurate out of the box. Plus the Kapex clamps are genius. If something is a pain to use, we don't use it, with the kapex, I use the clamps every time because they are so quick and easy. The Kapex is also a space saver in the back, VERY nice feature. Plus how the bevel adjustment works, just turn the knob, another innovation. Not to mention, how can you compare, even price wise, brand aside, between a chop saw and a slider? I am not a FT fanboy, but sorry, this was not a good comparison. If it was a Dewalt slider, then it would be more fair.

(Why didn't Festool make a 12" machine, at least for US market?) Long ago on a job, I made a cone from a Dixie cup and used it to enlarge the dust inlet on the Dewalt. Further iterations of this "Big Mouth" modification hasn't made it a rival for Kapex efficiency, but it does make a significant improvement. Along with pricing policies that got them fined several million a few years back.

    • @ericdevarney4089
      @ericdevarney4089 3 роки тому +2

@@TheFunnyCarpenter The ease of tilting the head, the accuracy, the zero gravity stand, the fact I can put it against the wall and not have to worry about slide rails hitting, the ability to adjust the tension on the glide mechanism. I also like the quality of the saw over both the Festool and the Dewalt. The Axial glide is bullet proof. I'm not gentle on my equipment, and the Axial glide takes its fair share of abuse and still cuts perfectly every time. Though if we are honest with each other the other 2 are fine, I'm extremely brand loyal and have been using a Bosch saw for a while, I know my saw and dislike swapping from what I know.

The only benefit in my opinion to the Kapex is the dust collection. My favorite type of tool videos in general is what's the real world use? I’m a finish carpenter. Kapex definitely not worth the money . The Dewalt you are comparing to is not good because it doesn’t slide. A 10” or 12” sliding compound Dewalt will cut anything and do it well. As far as dust goes.. well that’s what brooms are for. There will always be a huge mess regardless of the saw.

  • @koala_1197
