It looks ROUGH! Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom was spectacular. This remake needs a lot more work
Even the remake that lizardcube did for the wonderboy the dragons trap looks better then this.
The early trailer for the Monster Boy remake, as I recall, looked like stiff flash animation, but the final game was more polished. Hopefully here, too, the animations/poses aren’t so stiff when this releases.
That rope segment killed it for me.
I hope we can come back to videos like this and think “yeah!! Maybe they did listen. Look at how much better it looks!” I really hope it get cleaned up and receives the polish it deserves like the other two Switch titles!
I remember early Monster Boy footage looked real bad and many including myself made it known we wanted it to look more the The Dragons Trap remake and they did eventually improve the visuals. So there’s hope
Hopefully its the same developers that remade 3
2.5D can be done nicely, I bet this footage is early development and needs more polish.

I never played Monster World 4, but I did play a bit of Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom and loved it!
I also really love Asha as a protagonist, so it would break my heart to see this remake fail. 🙀💔

Completely true, it's like when you go to a restaurant, they have an amazing legacy and all the dishes are great, but there's one of them that doesn't taste good at all. I think as customers/consumers is in our duty to indicate what's wrong so that the restaurant/developer can improve on it.

The Womder Boy and the Dragons Trap remaster was awesome, Monster Boy was AMAZING! I hope this one gets polished up.
The game looks like a free mobile version. With a bit of luck this was just a prototype version . Love the wonder boy, monster boy games.

I was a bit disappointed with the look, too, but I have faith they'll pull it together before the game releases. I do feel, however, that they missed an opportunity here in making the in game graphics mimic the sorta claymation style of the Mega Drive cover. That would've been amazing to see!

The visuals we've been show look like prototypes. Perfectly fine for internal use but it's worrying that this is what they're presenting to prospective customers. As you mentioned, Bloodstained went through a similar scenario and came out fine, so this isn't hopeless (even though I don't know what budget this Wonder Boy has).

As a fun fact, the game developers were going to reveal this back at GDC, they would had a panel called "Wonder Boy Universe: Asha in Monster World" but yeah, GDC was cancelled so finally we can see this and what MonsterBoy teased at the 100% ending.
The 3D looks rough, hopefully they refine it.

I was just watching the video with him and rob man and which games are most nostalgic to them and it brought back so many great memories and it helps to pass the time. As of now the nurse say everything is going great. I can’t wait to see her. the first thing out of her mouth is gonna be wheres my subway lol. They wouldn’t let her eat beforehand.

I would be fine with the graphics if this was a sequel, as IGN falsely reported (screw em for that blunder), but not if it's "remastering" a classic in spritework.

I agree with you 100% on this for sure. WonderBoy and Monster Boy were my favorites by far man. They were sooo damn good and amazing. Even Shantae were great games also. But this one was a step back to those games. I’m playing it right now and it’s ehh it’s hard to see this game not hit like those other games.

Wonder Boy Returns on PS4 has been fascinated. I beat that game a year ago; then came back this year to play & beat the classic Genesis version of Wonder Boy in Monster World. What a game !
it is always great to know someone who loves and lived with this series talk about it. back when you reviewed the whole series I went and played all the games and thanks to you I am a big fan of this series. honestly they are doing a madness with this franchise . wonder boy dragon trap remake was a banger and monster boy and cursed kingdom is my favorite platformers of all time. can't wait to play this.

I totally agree with you! Was very dissapointed with the early footage shown as Monster World IV is my favourite Mega Drive game and had beautiful visuals with detailed sprites, excellent use of colour and scrolling effects.
I'm really hoping this release gets a serious makeover before release 🤔
oh man I'm with you there. The footage was quite an awkward let down . For a remaster it looks more like graphic -and stylistic, downgrade for now but, early footage can mean little now . Monsterboy completely rehauled their graphics many times in the process . And yeah Shantae level is probably where we wish the game would rise to

I enjoy the art style for the character models/backgrounds for Wonder Boy and the dragons trap and Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom.
Wonder Boy Asha in Monster World looks okay but I definitely like the look of the other games more. I'll still keep my eyes out for it. It comes out later this month but I probably will hold off and grab it later this year.
I'll play through dragons trap then probably import the cursed kingdom for Switch with the English subtitles.
Sounds odd, but it's awesome watching Wonder Boy, and related videos from ya. I was sadly raised on Hudson's Adventure Island, but these videos make me want more of that kind of platformer. Got to play Adventure Island on my Dad's Super Gameboy, on a Projector aimed at a bedroom wall when I was a kid. Small bedroom. Big gamer memberriez.
I know this is an old video but I thought the Asha remake was incredibly charming and relaxing. I never go to play the original. Yes, it's not as good quality as Monster Boy but we have to remember it's a just a graphical update of an old game and not a remake. A simple game with relaxing music and gameplay along with charming characters just hit the spot for me.
they need to focus on the art style, It's early in development though oh man i hope don't end up like this in the final release

I played wonderboy in monsterland for sega master system when i was a kid. Eventually i discovered wonderboy in monster world on genesis in the mid 90s. Those 2 games are masterpieces.

I think your tone is spot on, not only does the art style not seem appropriate for this series, but it doesn't look appealing to me at all. There's nothing wrong with going 3D, but it can be done in beautiful way, I'm thinking of the latest Donkey Kong Country games as prime examples. But I'd also be fine with the 16-bit style as well, these games are all about gameplay for me.

I was saying to my self when I saw this game at gamescom that happy console gamer will love this game and will probably talk about it. The game looks very beautiful. Those colors.
The 3D is pretty rough but they are on to something good if they can define the art style perfect.
Also remember the first trailer of Monster Boy had a undefined art style and the animations were very rough. I bet alot of you forget that the Lion-man in that game looks way different than the finished version.
Please take your time with Asha in Monster World please, do not rush it out. Make sure the visual art style is done consistently right and able to make the charm really shine.

I agree 100% with your view on this. I'm a huge fan of MW IV too and I really want to see this game succeed, especially with the original devs from Westone coming back. I'm not sure why they felt it necessary to convert the game to 3D when the Dragon's Trap remake and Monster Boy had great success with the 2D hand drawn style. I'll buy and enjoy the game no matter what, but I just felt stunned when I saw the trailer.
Those one thing in question in a remaster is that the graphic must be incredible

Yeah, I think that Monster World trailer showed something that is very much a work in-progress. There's some animation polish that needs to happen for sure, but there's also probably lighting/shaders and anti-aliasing that has yet to be fully implemented which could drastically improve the "look" of the game. Not to mention some spots where the performance seemed to dip a bit. I think it's too early yet to be very worried, but it's always a good time to give respectful, constructive feedback.
Monster Boy on the Switch is super rare right now to find in physical form. I got my copy for $15 last year when it went on sale but a friend recently asked me about this and I looked it up and the prices are ridiculous for Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom.

1:41 when you took a deep breath and hesitated with your explanations, I already knew what you REALLY wanted to say. I was like "It's ok bro, just go on and say it. I see it too."
It looks like it would fit right at home on a PSP with all the 2.5D titles it looks like in it's library.
It's early development and the creator is working with a small independent studio, which means small budget, so a 3D engine is needed to reduce costs and workload, but these graphics and art needs a LOT more work.

Agreed, playing MWIV on XB1X and the hard copy of Monster Boy on PS4 with my kids and that trailer is a great start but please bring it to lvl of Dragon's Trap & Monster Boy.
Man, IV was my introduction into the Wonderboy series when it got released on the Wii Virtual Console. It's such a shame they thought it was ok to show the game in this state. Especially, as you said, when we've been getting gorgeous 2D animated style games the past couple of years. I hope they take a step back and rethink some things.

It looks like it would look fine in a 3DS, in a small screen with bad resolution. In that context I would even say that the graphics had the low poly charm of a handheld game, it reminds me of ever oasis a little bit.
Even the simplistic Wonder Boy Remix looks like they put more heart into it! I agree with you, if they keep the graphics like this, it most likely won't be a big success. And we want it to be a success.

I remember this series. Great to see it return. Hm new art direction.. similar to how Megaman 11 adapted. It doesn't work for everything, but rarely does. I really wish it was a sequel, and not a remake. That would be phenomenal to see a new adventure.

In my opinion, I think great platformer games with specific art style should stay the same or become better in terms of an equivalent art style, I think making those great games into 3D kills it for me AND it proves that games are ruined when they randomly get a 3D variation. It would have been way more colorful and pleasing if the art stayed cartoonish.
But yeah, I am on the same boat! I will still get it bro! Die hard supporters!!!! :D
I love the original game and I too hope the best for it that creator can give a little more work on and more people and fan fans can get into because it a great game probably on of the best platformer of all time IMO.
