  • Defunct Games reviews Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World by Artdink and Monkey Craft, available May 28 on PlayStation 4 and Switch. PC version coming on June 29.
    When you think of Sega's best 16-bit games, you probably picture classics like Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage 2 and maybe even Ecco the Dolphin. But what about Monster World IV? This 1994 action/adventure game is a certified cult classic, yet it's rarely part of the conversation. Perhaps all that will change with the release of Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World, a loving remake that is brand-new on the PlayStation 4 and Switch. Grab your sword and Pepelogoo, because today we're going to travel deep into the Monster World to look at the history of Wonder Boy and find out if this remake was worth the 27-year wait.

    I’m playing Wonder Boy in Monster World right now, and it’s really fun. The naming scheme for the whole series is a bit confusing though and I’m constantly getting them all mixed up.

    wow, i didnt know they had a remake! I wish they used the art style of the monster world dragon's curse remake.

    This looks quite good, but I think the pixel art just looks better. On top of that, it's $34.99, and I can't justify that for what amounts to ~5 hours of gameplay.
    QOTD: Favorite game was Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. Great exploration, gorgeous art, fun gameplay, good music. I 100%'d the game. The developers put a ton of heart and soul into that game, you could tell.

    I'm honestly surprised that the under the radar Monster World 4 got a remake before the well known classic Wonder Boy in Monster Land. Not that I'm complaining.

    This feels the perfect opportunity for a brand new game using this same same art style and graphics and just improving everything you mentioned

    QOTD: My favorite is definitively Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. However, when it comes to the older Wonder Boy games (and not their remakes), my favorite is Wonder Boy in Monster World (which is Monster World IV's direct prequel, for those who don't know). That game definitively deserves a remake, and in the style of The Dragon's Trap remake IMO.

    Thanks Cyril!
    I’ve only had limited exposure to the Monster Boy series. A little Adventure Island I and II on the NES and I played dragons trap on my switch. I’m super interested in playing the others and would love to see some videos on the others.
    It’s interesting to me how often Dragons Trap is not mention when ppl discuss Metroid-Vania origins, Dragons Trap truly had a big influence on the genre.

    picked the Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World physical copy up on May 28, 2021, thanks for the review
    9:14 It was only $5 extra for the retail version, I considered that as the "switch tax" and not because we were getting the older version included on the cart. was that really so bad? I know a bunch of games that cost $5 or more to get the physical copy over the digital version and you are not getting any extras which is why I think they call it the "switch tax".

    Great review but one thing I gotta ask: Any reason why you didn't mention that Monster World 4 got an official English release on the Genesis Mini? Seems like it would be rather important with how much you talked up how the game is a cult classic.

    • @DefunctGames
      @DefunctGames  3 роки тому +2

      That's a fair point. I believe an English version of the original also came out on the Virtual Console, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade. I probably could have talked about their eventual releases from Sega, but the history portion of the review had already dragged on for several paragraphs and it didn't make the cut.

    Being a massive Wonder Boy fan I had to pre order the physical version of this game on PS4. My first ever Wonder Boy experience was Wonder Boy in Monster Land on the Master System way back as a 6 year old in 1992. But I have still to this day never finished that game. The first one I did finish was Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap on the Game Gear. Now we have got remakes of Wonder Boy, Wonder Boy III and now Wonder Boy IV I would love a remake of Wonder Boy in Monster Land.

    My new favorite Wonder Boy game is called AGGELOS, modern retro style metroidvania/zelda 2/wonder boy monster world style game. I give it 10/10 and just beast it yesterday and I feel it is truly awesome. Such satisfying abiity progression and magfic and powwrups leting you do cool new things, and really awesome boss battles. As for my favorite actual wonder boy game, it is Dynastic Hero for Turbo Grafx CD. It is the same as wonder boy in monster world for genesis, but better sprite swaped basically with cd sound to make it even beter.

    This looks gorgeous. Played a translated rom decades ago, and got it for the PS3 on the Sega ages collection they did. Glad it actually looks new. Wonder boy in monster world (WB5) would be prime for a remake. They could even use the same engine as this since they play similar.
    QOTD, favorite is wonder boy 3 dragons trap. That also got a great remake.

    QotD: slightly off the mark, but I enjoyed the Adventure Island 2 and 3 games a lot on the NES; my exposure to Monster Boy has been regrettably limited.
    offtopic: the last few minutes of the video has unexpectedly no music, a bug maybe?

    Alternatively they is also : (on Xbox 360) Sega Vintage Collection: Monster World which contains : a bunch of the earlier games & includes Monster World IV in the collection and that came out back in 2012.
    I'd say the same developer if they got together with a talented maker of a metrovania like title & used this style of updated graphics they could do great with some sort of INDY+ title like that. Visually it's great it could just do with some more elaborate things to do and a longer game - maybe a couple of playable characters and alternative side kicks - do something like that & it could be pretty terrific even if it was still completely 2D in it's level design I think something like that would be cool even now.
    The indies do that sort of thing - but it's always a bit to 8 bit looking for my tastes so something a bit more 16 bit+ looking would certainly appeal to me a whole lot more. Kinda like Mickey Mouse Castle of Illusion could do with another sequel too.

    It's the only Wonder Boy game I haven't played. Never even knew about it's existence back in the days. You need to look hard to find a second company that made so many piss poor business decision like Sega. Wonder Boy in Monster World on the Mega Drive will alway be one of my all time favorite games.

    • @DefunctGames
      @DefunctGames  3 роки тому +2

      I have often considered doing a list of Sega's worst business decisions, but there are just too many of them. The list would stretch into the hundreds. They are STILL leaving money on the table. It's gotten to the point where indie developers have had to step in just to keep franchises like Streets of Rage, ToeJam & Earl, Panzer Dragoon and even The House of the Dead relevant. They had to have their arm twisted just to make a Shenmue collection. They are endlessly frustrating.

      I remember giving The Dracula X Chronicles a fairly high score, but it was mostly on the strength of the original Rondo and Symphony of the Night. The Rondo remake didn't play right. I liked the art style and visuals, but it just didn't feel like the original.

    • @filialuvssquigly7447

      @@DefunctGames eh fair enough, yeah i like the art as well to me ayami kojimas version of richter is the canon richter, same goes for her version of simon and trevor. my only real complaint is the new voice over in both rondo and symphony it is soooooo bad compared to original versions and i felt like it was not necessary. kind of like when they changed the voice overs and song lyrics in lunar silver start harmony for the psp from what was on the ps1 version. it really hurt the experience for me in both cases but in rondos case the art went a long way in fixing that to where i hate lunar silver star harmony and it is my least favorite version of lunar because of the new voice overs. ps. sorry for this rant lol
