  • Wonder Boy is... um. A series. That much I know. Its a confusing series though.
    How does Adventure Island tie in again? What's Revenge of Drancon? Is that some-how related?
    Anyway, I played Wonder Boy: The Dragons Trap and Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World.
    Here's my review of the later with references to the former.

    Well, another day another historical game series I finally got to experience for the first time.
    JRPG stuff will be coming back soon. Working on a game for a "Looking back on" episode, but it's gonna take a while. Only half way done it. Should be a couple other things over the next week though. Gotta get myself back on track!

      Looks like a charming game, sadly for us "rather have it in physical mode" collectors I am sure this game will be impossible to find, and thus 90 to 120$ on steam. Looks like a fun retro looking game that most older gamer's would seem to want to fall in love with. Thank you for this video and the time these quality video reviews/first take's take as wife and I had NEVER heard of this game until you showcased it here and now.

    I do love the hand drawn look of The Dragon's Trap, but I honestly like this just as much, and I do love that the team took the opportunity to add things like a save anywhere feature.
    I also think including the original as a bonus was a great move, and something I wish more remakes would do.
    Also, I've been checking out the Wonder Boy games a lot in the last year or two and it almost unbelievable how much the Shantae series was inspired by it. They even carried over the old guy with a green robe who saves your game xD

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah. I was thinking the same thing, but apparently Shantea's creators were asked if they were inspired by the wonder Boy series, and more specifically Asha when making their game but they denied it. From what I gathered they didn't even seem too familiar with this game.
      But the similarities are definitely there, and I'm not complaining haha.

      @@TarksGauntlet I'm definitely not complaining one bit, but if they really weren't familiar with Wonder Boy/Asha at all, that must be one of the biggest examples of convergent inspiration that I've ever seen xD

    I feel that you and I had a very similar experience with this game and came to it with a similar background. I think you described the "Who this game is for" perfectly.

    It's amazing to see how much the charm of the original design carries over to the new art style. Despite enjoying the original design a lot, but the colors are vibrant and the style feels somewhat fresh!

    Old school fan of the WB series here. Hell yeah the remake is pretty good, but i wish the game was delayed a lil longer to really polish up some animations. It's been improved over the god awful first trailer. The original game is still enjoyable, I have the physical version on switch tho im more of a digital bloke for my switch. As a flexible artist, making 3D models and make them super appealing in 2.5D format is very difficult to do. The only games that I feel has done it well is Donkey Kong Country Returns/Tropical Freeze.
    I do think the asking price for this game even bundled with the original for £35 is a bit too much for the average consumer, so I recomend you buy the original 2D version on Xbox live or PSN which comes with "Monster Land arcade version" and "Wonder Boy in monster world" (sadly doesn't have the original Dragon's Trap for Master System/Dragon's curse a tweaked up version for Turbo Graphics.)
    With all these juicy sega remakes and new games commissioned to indie companies. I do hope we can get remakes of shining force 1,2 and actual english ports of the entire third game.

      Yeah, its quite surprising how many classic Sega hits are coming back. Alex the Kidd returns in about what... 8 days? That's one I didn't see coming. Can't say I figure many people in the west are gonna be up for the rock/paper/scissors matches but it'll be neat to see how it goes. The visual design for that game is looking pretty neat so far too.

      @@TarksGauntlet I'm hoping to god that sega is or has commissioned a studio to make a new or remake shining force 1,2.
      I have no nostalgia for those two games but hot damn they got me into stragety rpgs also it has the most diverse cast of characters you never see or even represented well in other rpgs.
      Alex kidd miracle world's janken isn't random it's all scripted to use specific hand gesture for each turn. The remake did catch me off guard where the hands are given out way earlier. the remake should've improved the controls and give alex the option to use alternate melee attacks to have a better attack hit box. I'm used to the jank of the OG game but it hasn't aged well and can't recomend the remake unless someone has the patience or just to appreciate the lovely artwork.

    I've always been a pretty casual Wonder Boy fan. I like Dragon's Trap, and Cursed Kingdom is like...REALLY good, but I'll admit Asha was never one that really wowed me, and while I didn't hate the remake, I do think it's a bit weaker. I definitely agree this is a title that's mainly for established fans of the series and I'm not sure I'd recommend it as a starting point.
    Also I dunno, going from Dragon Trap's transformations to Pepelogoo just felt like a weaker central game mechanic in my eyes. I'm not big on a double jump ability that you have to stop and call to you before you can use it.

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  3 роки тому +1

      For me the difference was almost entirely in the level design. I really didn't like dragon traps level design, though the animal transformations are probably preferable to pepelogoo.

    Oh noooo, it's a shame you coin-flipped Dragon's Trap instead of Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom instead. The latter is very similar to the Shantae games, but better than anything in that series. Good level design and gameplay, with reason to backtrack and explore.

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  3 роки тому +2

      Was Cursed Kingdom a remake as well? I know at least one of the modern ones was an all new game and I was trying to avoid that one at least. Plus, my buddy owned this one so I could get it easily lol.

    Why is it called wonder boy but you play as a girl? Why not call the beginning of the title “Wonder Girl”(or just make the character male), I’m not bother by either way but the inconsistency bugs me. Or is this the like “The Legend of Zelda” where the title isn’t about the character you play as?

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  3 роки тому

      Yeah... that's a good question. The series has a very messy history of regional naming differences as well as localization name changing.
      I think at this point they've decided more or less, for brand recognition, that the series is called "Wonder Boy" however the original title for this game was "Monster World IV"
      Don't let this hinder you in figuring out how Adventure Island, Monster Boy or "Revenge of Drancon" fit into the mix though, nor how any "Adventure Island" game past the first does not...

      Tarks Gauntlet I loved adventure island as a kid, but I don’t think I could ever get passed the third level. I could easily beat the second level(the one with the clouds from start to finish with the skateboard though.
