This game feels like it would have fit perfectly on the 3DS. The stereoscopic 3D and low resolution would have done a lot of favors to the cheap graphics.
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is one of the greatest games ever made. A masterpiece in every way!

It's suffering from the same Mighty No9 effect. Clean 2D artwork translated into plain looking and boxy 3D environment without character. Asha and enemies doesn't look that bad, but the environments does. I totally agree a Claymation artstyle would have been so cool for this. I love the original cover art for the MD game.
Precisely. I don't get why so many japanese developers insist on this. The same thing happened with Bloodstained: Ritual of The Night, a game that had definitely raised enough funds to pay proper 2D artists yet they still went with the bland 3D models and environments. Even though these games might have solid gameplay and overall design, the bland 3D look just really hinders the whole experience for me.

Even if the remake isn't perfect, I really want to get this! The charm and style has won me over, plus I'll never pass up a chance to play the original on modern hardware. I absolutely love all the emulation setting they have on there :D
Yeah, I really don't think it's that bad. Certainly from a die-hard fan's perspective this is very disappointing due to what it could have been, but for folks just looking for a good, classic platform adventure, this game looks perfect. It deserves a lot of the criticisms, but it is by no means a horrendous game to play. Looking at something like Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, I think that game deserves a lot of criticism, yet it is still highly praised.

And I actually liked the Secret of Mana remake, so I'm definitely not one to worry about expectations like that xD
I highly recommend it! But get the PS4 version on PS5 if you can. It runs almost perfectly at 60fps and looks gorgeous.

I think for a die hard fan it’s still a good deal! I think it’s just for people like me - who never played the originals but ADORED Monster Boy and loved Dragons trap mainly because it’s art style is a joy, it just isn’t worth the investment until it goes on a hefty sale
I don't know. Most of the criticisms I'm seen towards this remake feel more like nitpicks about the graphics. Not that these aren't valid criticisms, but I also feel that people are being too hard on the game. But maybe I'm just biased. This is my first real stab at any version of Monster World IV, and I'm loving it. Maybe when I get around the original, I'll be so blown away by it that my opinion towards the remake will shift. . . or maybe not.
I agree with you. I played the original before this remake and I think it was wonderful. Just because it’s not the same as the Dragon’a Trap remake doesn’t mean its bad. The controls are very fluid. The soundtrack is still great. Graphics look absolutely beautiful in my eyes. And I’m an artist. Didn’t experience any wag whatsoever. These are complete nitpicks. I mean people are entitled to their opinion but jeez there are much worse remakes out there!
I also agree. We all wish it had been done in 2D, but what we got is not bad at all. It plays and controls very well & is very faithful to the original. The graphics aren't super detailed or anything, but they are nice & clean. It's really not that bad at all & is still very fun to play! It also does a pretty good job capturing the feel of the original. I think they did a good job all things considered. I do hope they clean the framerate up on the Switch version tho with a patch.
The problem simply is, all that is good from the remake is just what was the original game. If a remake does not improve, then it simply is not a good remake
The Wonder Boy series are one of my favorites..and I doubt there ever have been a bad game in series! All of them are great!

Don't get me wrong the hardware and retro pieces are absolutely absorbing, but when it comes to actual video game review, I can't see anything better.
Thanks for recognizing how great an entry MWIV is. I got to play the whole adventure on my Nomad, translated, while on vacation to see GDQ, and it was such a wonderful experience to have one more new adventure from my favorite period in gaming. MWIV is a grand Genesis adventure and one of the most charming games I’ve ever played. Since I couldn’t pay Sega for the pleasure back in the day, I’ve made sure to get this game when it’s been rereleased. On my Xbox 360 with the Wonder Boy Collection, my Xbox One with the Sega Genesis Collection, of course the Sega Genesis Mini and now the Switch version. MWIV was ahead of its time, but now that it’s in 3D polygons, it’s behind the times. Doesn’t take away just how charming, memorable, adventurous and fun the original is. So thanks for spreading the word!
This remake is not as bad reviewers are making it out to be. I enjoyed my two runs of the game. I want to support the developers in hopes of them to create a new sequel, or remake Monster World I & Monster World III.
I never knew that the Genesis entry of Wonder Boy in Monster World was released on the Wii Virtual Console. You got that right with how convoluted the series is with a clear timeline and different entries. Love that you bought the game twice despite not being overly crazy with the reveal of the trailer. That's true support for this wonderful series! A claymation aesthetic would have been interesting. It's wild how much control the player had at the display with all the options to make the picture the way you want it. Like you, I'm not a huge CRT enthusiast but that's really neat that you have that option. I do have Asha in Monster World on the Switch but haven't tried it out yet, this was very helpful in tailoring my expectations and perhaps lowering the bar on my hope for it. I'll still try it out!
All I can say about this video is: "Yes, I'm glad came."
Nifty that the Switch version is on cart as is, it is totally a consolation prize for someone like me who literally bought this blind lol I knew nothing about how the game play was and assumed it was 2D art like Monster Boy and Wonder Boy III -_-

Thanks for covering this remake, guys! Great video, as always. I was particularly surprised to see the frame rate issues on the Switch version. I've been playing the PS4 version (in an original PS4) and haven't seen or gotten frame rate issues (yet). Not even that one mentioned at 7:19. I personally think that the Switch frame rate issue and the mistranslations are two things that must be prioritized and fixed in an update patch ASAP. It would be cool if they add voiceovers in other languages, or at least in English. I admit that one is more of a nice-to-have, though.
Also, I haven't been too impressed particularly with the enemies art designs. Those in particular look too basic or cartoony, for the lack of a better term.
Besides those points, I still think it's a decent remake. Definitively not as good as the Dragon's Trap remake, but still decent and enjoyable. Better than others that I've seen around. It's just that the bar has been set so high not only with the Dragon's Trap remake and Monster Boy, but also in the video game industry in general. I just hope Ryuichi Nishizawa listens to this feedback, and come back to us with a new Wonder Boy game that is more in-tune with today's standards and following-up with the level of quality that the Dragon's Trap remake and Monster Boy has set. Not only graphical and playability wise, but also in terms of the story telling. The Wonder Boy Monster World series has a great history, that definitively has a lot of potential to tap into, but unfortunately that hasn't been done yet (with the exception of Monster Boy, perhaps).
Even in their initial trailer for both games the framerate issues were still present and many viewers did point out about it but it seems the dev doesn't care and release it with the issue still exist.
Ahh I can't wait to get my copy! I was late to the game; started with the remake of Dragon's Trap, so I'm super invested in this series now! 😃

I do want to support the Wonder Boy series and I feel I've been able to do that even while skipping Asha. I can't afford to just buy everything. I need more polish in a game before I'm willing to spend.

Have ya bought the Wonder Boy collection, it features the all original games (minus the dozens of ports, although there is a version that does), I bought it on the PS4 and I'm really enjoyin' 3&4, the first two ain't quite what I'm lookin' for gameplay wise.

The Sega Genesis version was excellent. One of my fav games for that console, so slept on.

10:15 According to the credits, Kaori Nakabai, Takuya Hanaoka, and Tomohiro Morino handled the arrangement in the remake. So this *was* done by different artists.
This is a shame, this masterpiece deserved better. This remake is passable although the frame rate issues on switch are ridiculous, but it really should’ve been done in the beautiful 2D style like the others with the option to switch between visual styles, plus the translation should be better with dual language version.
You're completely right about the remake being a lot of missed potential, especially when they could have easily fixed awkward things like all the missable life drops and Pepelogoo becoming unavailable 2/3 of the way through the game. (You can access a special item that makes him always available, but it's tied to the secret merchant and is on a second playthrough only, it seems.) But I found myself drawn in by just how charming this game is despite its cheapness. This is my first experience with any Monster World/Wonder Boy game at all, and far from putting me off, it's made me that much more interested in checking out the rest of the series. I'm also looking forward to trying out the original MW4 included in the release, since I got the physical.
Just picked this up a few days ago on Switch, and was waiting for you to make a video on it, Coury! I'm definitely not feeling the remake either, but I'm glad I can finally have a physical copy the Genesis English translation. Just got into the series a little while back with Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, so I'm excited to get into MW4 :)

I liked the remake. Very good graphics, more easy (better) and only missed a complete backtracking of all the life drops.

I recently played thru the original game again with the MSU-MD hack which actually puts the remixed music from this game into the original game, and I thought it was great! I liked all the new tracks, aside for the Ice Pyramid track, which was my fav from the original & I don't think they did the best job on that one.

OK, was glad to see your consensus was the same as mine; I'll be sticking to the original genesis version with an English patch (looks and plays great on MISTER FPGA!) I absolutely don't see what some mediocre polygons have over the beautiful pixel artwork of the original.

I’m not sure if it’s because I came into this game with no expectations, but I’m quiet enjoying it. I think it’s also because I recently beat two challenging games, so this is a nice break or palette cleanser. I’m also playing with an Arcade stick, just for the heck of it.
I agree with a lot of the points. The animation is lack lustre, the art style of the previous entries was more inspiring, and the challenge is lacking. However, that said I’m still enjoying it for what it is.
Oh, and just in case you didn’t know. You can input a code at the start screen to unlock the original soundtrack.
There's surely got to be a release of the translated MWIV rom in Retrobit's calendar after the Wily Wars.
I’m only picking it up for the original. Honestly would’ve been fine with just a standard release of the original in HD for the switch.
The issue with this is the blandness of the enclose environments.. The OG is cute & quirky(like Asha & Pepelogoo) and full of colour.
Didn't like the general look (don't like 2.5D) but that little dance she does when openning chests is adorable.

There is zero reason the Switch shouldn't be able to handle a game like this without framerate issues. I can only hope they take the time to work on a patch to smooth things out, although I'm not holding my breath considering it's a budget release to begin with...

I disagree with certain aspects of your review, but still thumbs up. This is the most in depth review of this game I've seen on UA-cam so far.
This game totally flew under the radar for me, I was with my brother at an electronic shop here in Canada and he pointed it out. I checked out videos of the gameplay and I knew I had to get it. I don't have the nostalgia to this game as the reviewer had, but I just love the personality and cuteness of Asha. What an adorable character ☺️. Yes the gameplay is simple, and the lack of a map in some of the dungeons can be frustrating. But it has that old school feel that I cherish.
Call me crazy but I enjoy this game more than the previous 2 wonder boys. And I prefer the art style. The last 2 games had that "flash" look to me. This game looks beautiful on my OLED, the colors just pop.
Well I enjoyed Mighty no. 9 and the secret of Mana remake, which some people have compared this too. I think people were way too hard on those games.
Own the PS4 version mostly for collection sake as well as a nice repro version for the Genesis. Monster World IV is my favorite in the series and I'm so mad it was done so dirty for the remake.
Yeah, we all wish it had been done in 2D, but it's really not that bad. I wouldn't even call it bad to be honest. Just not what we would have preferred. It still plays really well. I think he's being a bit harsh in this video.

I never got into the wonder boy games, but before this came out I played the original Monster World 4 on emulator and it was so incredibly fun.

Haven't played this one yet but I have it on my radar and I can safely say that I'm sticking to my plan and playing the original (if the price is right later down the line maybe investing in a Switch copy just to have the original in physical form then)!
Such a shame that they couldn't get the budget for a version more akin to what we been seeing from Dragons Trap and Monster Boy... I'm sure those developers would've love to make this game even with a stricter budget :o

The feature to return to previous dungeons seemed a little half baked and not too well thought out, but I appreciate the effort. It's like the game doesn't want you to miss life drops, but then goes ahead and makes some life drops missable anyways.
That was my only real gripe with it, aside from a bit of choppy framerate stuff on the Switch version. Despite it being a bit haphazard, I love the core game so dearly that I was able to look past it all.
The Wonder Boy games are good stuff. The first one I played was Wonder Boy in Monster World and I wonder if it will get a remake like the others did. This remake of Monster World IV is definitely a bit rough but it's still fun. I do prefer the original.

I almost preordered from Strictly Limited & am glad I didn't. Ended up preordering from Amazon instead & already got my copy for the Switch.

@@seanthiem1176 No prob, glad to hear it. Imo it's not usually worth buying from Strictly Limited unless it's a true exclusive or if you live in Europe so they don't have to ship internationally. Otherwise shipping adds a decent amount to the cost while Amazon & Best Buy ship for free.
Just not worth it imo unless they're offering a limited edition that you just can't do without. The total cost for my order just wouldn't have been worth the extra booklet or whatever it was they were offering. I've never really cared about limited editions or anything like that, I just want to have the game itself to play.

If they had tilted Asha during her jumps to try to match her sprite 1:1 and gave her run animation some more flow, it would've made a lot of difference. Having her face directly left or right just looks stiff. Still a cute game though.
Never played any of the original Wonder Boy games, but I bought Monster Boy due to my love of Metroidvania style games and my real love for its art style, and its quickly become one of my all time favorite games. I was hoping this game would be really amazing, but if it’s a bit disappointing, what can you do?
Yeah, I love Wonder Boy, but I'm gonna have to pass on this version. I have a Genesis Mini, and I love that version, but yeah, I prefer most games in 1:1 PAR these days. Nice vid!

PS4 disc not having the original game on the disc makes this a no buy for me.
The fact that they couldn't even include it on the disc is very scummy especially when all those spaces on the Blu-ray were not taken advantage of.
@@VOAN facts!! This reminds me of the spyro remake were they put the 1st game on the disc and made you download the other two games. I canceled my order in a hurry when I heard that news. Not everyone is all for this all digital only BS.
Maybe it has to do with reselling (dev wants people to buy a new copy if you want the bonuses) but then, why bother adding them to the switch version then? At the very least, you could get the bonuses for download then resell/return the game and keep those, lol. Unless they still required the disc to be played?
@@Echidneys interesting take on it. You could buy the PS4 version play it, use the download code they give you and have the original, then sell off the remake. Then if you did need the disc to play the downloaded original then it would act as a form of DRM. Just makes more sense to include it on the disc.
@@buckroger6456 Yeah, idk why they wouldn't just include it since each game could probably fit on the disc ten times apiece as it is. If you ever find out if the OG download comes essentially for free, walmart would probably be dumb enough to accept a return after using the codes lol.
Monster World IV is by far my favourite MW game. I am intruiged.
I absolutely agree that it would have been MUCH better if they had remade the game in the same 2D art style that they did the newer games in. Why they didn't do this is anyone's guess. It's the absolute best game in the entire Wonderboy series imo & has always been one of my fav Genesis games, so I feel it absolutely deserves the same love & care as the other games in the series got.

In spite of its flaws, mainly the choppy framerate on Switch, I really enjoyed this, I never played the original, but after I beat the remake I went back and played it on a MiSTer and like it just as much.
And here is the problem. What you liked about the remake is simply the original game its built upon

How odd... The PS4 Emulated version's music sounds sped up compared to the original Genesis music in your side by side comparison. Why would that be?
Did you play the original game on a European Mega Drive? European versions of games and consoles often run at 5/6 of the original speed, due to the change from 60 to 50 hertz.
Maybe you played the original game on a PAL Mega Drive, then played the emulated version at NTSC speed. That might explain it.
@@eymed2023 I don't really follow. What I played doesn't have anything to do w what I was saying. In the side by side comparison in this video, the Emulated PS4 version's music is sped up compared to the Genesis version being shown beside it. Surely I can't be the only one that noticed it, someone else had to have.

@@eymed2023 The Emulated version of the original game is supposed to be running the original ROM tho, so it would be very odd for the music to be different. I will definitely have to try the original game included w the new one & see if I hear the same difference. There also was never a European version of the game originally, it was a Japanese exclusive.
Disappointing to see how rushed the remake was. I was considering getting it, but I can live with the translated version of the original on my genesis mini. Great vid!
I don't really think it looks that rushed to me. Just budget like. Seems they got the things that mattered right tho, namely the play control. Sure, we all wish it had been done in 2D, but it's really not bad if you ask me. It's still fun to play and controls faithfully to the original.

@@JerryBaezAlchemus No doubt, it seems most ppl are more disappointed due to expectation more than the actual game itself. That only serves to ruin the experience of what we actually have.
We can't do anything to magically make it into what we wish it was, so we might as well try to enjoy what we got, and be real about judging it of course. If a person hates it then that's fine, but don't hate it simply because it's 3D and that's it. 3D games can still be great.

@@JerryBaezAlchemus why? Every game is a 10 out 10 to him. He even was gushing about cyberpunk even though it was a pretty buggy and glitchy game.
@@buckroger6456 Because 1. He's definitively one of the biggest Wonder Boy fans as far as UA-cam content creator goes. 2. He was very critical with his impressions of the 1st trailer of this remake (the one that Coury mentioned on this video). So I'm sure a 10/10 won't come from him for this one.

i can say that the game run at the ps4 pro in full 60 fps, its make the game really easy. the emulation are ok, i dont know why they dont integreted there to the mega drive classics
for the switch 50 fps is the sweetspot, i dont understand this
