      I also said "Blasphemy!" before he did! I do admit it feels a bit outdated now though. But I'd still place the PlayStation controllers and the Saturn "3D Control Pad" as worse than the Dreamcast controller!

    The weirdest part about the Wii controller is that the D-Pad on that thing was actually really good. That's probably the last time Nintendo had a D-Pad that I actually liked.

      I always felt that. I have huge hands so it never worked for me, but I always remember thinking that if I had slender Japanese hands it would probably by extremely solid.

    Joycon controllers kept me from getting the Switch for 3 years. Absolutely amazing gaming console, but the joycons are too small and does not work for me. I use the Pro controller or a 3rd party Joypad instead of the joycons.

    My top 3 worst i've used
    3. Wii classic controller - Good for retro, but bad for modern games on the wii, does the job tho.
    2. PS1 standard controller - Always felt cheap to me, even when it was new, no weight buttons felt weird.
    1. Switch Joycons - Absolute terrible design, feels cheap, super expensive and absolutely prone to failure.

      I guess I must be insane because I actually really like how the joy cons feel, and I like playing games with the two disconnected. I like the freedom that gives my arms to move around and still be able to use every button on the controller. The buttons aren't amazing quality or anything, but I never feel that they're bad enough to hate. I've had the same joycons that came with my Switch and they still work great. Obviously if you're a bigger person, you're not going to like how small they are, but I'm rather small so the controllers feel fine in my hands. I actually kinda like how they fit almost fully in my hand.

Most of my buddies are used to picking who’s gonna use it for smash melee or Mario party 4 hahaha. I rarely comment on your vids but I’ve been a fan since 08 man! The Dreamcast controller had a sharp D-pad that cut into your thumb, its circular shape caused wrist pain in your hands after playing for hours, the cord dangled from the bottom and got in the way while playing, and the VMUs were silly and poorly implemented in most games. ... But I loved it!

    It's so funny to me because I absolutely loved the Wii U, everyone else seems to hate it. For me it was less about games and all about Miiverse, I made some amazing friends on there and spent hours and hours creating digital artwork on that touch screen. I've had every Nintendo since the NES, but the Wii U was the one I spent the most hours using because I love doing artwork and getting amazing positive feedback on Miiverse was just incredible. I too hated the motion control of the Wii controllers so the Wii U was actually a huge improvement for me.

    • @arturboy777
      @arturboy777 2 роки тому +1

      The Wii U had a lot of personality and care put to it. 90% of the time Miiverse was nonsensical scribbles by kids, but when I started finding users that would either create good artwork or make good posts and comments about games they were playing that I could follow, I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed seeing how people got clever using it with games that implemented it.
      The virtual console was phenomenal. I could watch Twitch perfectly and ad free on the browser. It was a great console and great experience overall, it just didn't get great support for games.
      I sometimes wondered if some of those great artworks were done regularly with the stylus, with some Wii U art app, or somehow brought in from people's computers.

    The controllers for the Sega Master System, which is my favorite console of all time. The d-pad & buttons on the standard controller were way too mushy & unresponsive, drove me nuts. I bought the joystiq controller to try an alternative but it was so awkward to hold, not to mention they made it left-handed. Thank goodness you can use the Sega Genesis controller for some of the games, but unfortunately that didn't function for a lot of SMS games.

    It's funny, I actually enjoy the Wiimote and the Wii U gamepad, though I can understand why someone might find them rather clunky sometimes. (I like them in gameplay, but when going through screens to start a game, the Wiimote IS annoying, yes.) I'd probably put the N64 as my top worst because, as some have already said, it feels kinda cheap, the joystick wears out quickly, and is hard to quite figure out how to grip it.

    The N64 controller, hands down. The problem for me is the existence of the C-buttons. What it meant was that we had buttons that also duplicated as camera controls, and thus there is no other controller in existence that can substitute for it. To this day, it's always awkward to play N64 games on any other platform.

    I've only played few controllers from 5th to 8th Gen era ; as I have never tried the ones like 3DO, Jaguar. I would say 1st is the N64 controller because of its joystick. Its controller layout, while despised by many, is fine for me cause I grew up with it and have a lot of memories of that console. But its N64's joystick turned me off because it would wear out the sand, thats suppose to allow you to move your character smoothly, the more usage you utilize the controller, making the joystick loose and unplayable on most of the library. The Wii Motion Controllers I found to be okay at first, for casual gaming like Wii Sports, but for traditional gaming, I always had to check which buttons I needed to press as well as deal with the motion controls. The GameCube controller I found to be great for most games but not great for fighting games. Dreamcast controller is awful for FPS, some fighting games, as well as playing MDK 2 ; however, its a controller I find nostalgia. The Original Xbox Duke Controller was okay for me; though I agree, it was way beefy on my hands. If I have to list one more for 8th Gen era, it would be the Switch JoyCons simply due to the JoyCon drift that Nintendo refuses to fix.

    Bold bold bold! Love your honesty, cutting right through the nostalgia. Totally agree about the comments about cheap-feeling builds and awkward buttons. The non diamond button configuration on the GameCube controller is genius. Other parts of it are spotty but it's a shame that didn't become standard. The default diamond configuration isn't ergonomic at all. With the GameCube button arrangement there is a natural slope for your thumb to rest on different button pairs. Also different shapes contribute to the game feel. Attacking with the big A button gives an extra oomph in Smash, Resident Evil 4 or Metroid Prime for example.

So many times I watch your videos and I see an absolutely gorgeous game clip and then I end up having to go back to the clip, pause the video, and try to pick out clues that might give Google some idea of what I'm talking about. For instance, the clip at 19:14 I searched: "Nintendo switch game with mobile suits to defeat monsters." When I saw Astral Chain on the list of suggestions I knew that it was correct because I vaguely remember seeing something about the game some time ago, probably on this channel. The Duke is one of my favourite controllers, specially due to it's size and layout, though wish the D-Pad was better. Also loved the Dreamcast controller and the WiiU. For me my least favourite would be N64 controller, Atari Jaguar, all generations of PS Dualshock controller series in regard size, the layout and the separated D-Pad buttons are a problem for me, Switch Joycons.

    • @JazGalaxy
      @JazGalaxy 2 роки тому +1

      Yeah. I agree. There was a contingent of people who always argued that the dual shock was supposedly the best controller and I always thought that was absurd. My fingers constantly crash into one another, having big hands. I liked Duke better as Well. But the 360 controller really “won” that style of controller. It’s perfect.
      I like new controllers just for the sake of new controllers though, so I hate it when everyone wants every controller to be just like the 360.

    • @sergeleon1163
      @sergeleon1163 2 роки тому

      @@JazGalaxy Yeah hand size really plays a role for what controller people can prefer. For me it's mostly due to how long my fingers are, for comparison at motorcycle or wintersport gloves the biggest ones sold here are size 11/XXL and yet the finger part is still too small for me on those.

    I started to play Dragon Quest IX because of your video. It is becoming one of my favorite JRPGs.
    I am playing it on my Android via Drastic, the DS emulator. Upscaled in resolution cuz the native resolution of the DS sucks. With an 8bitdo controller connected via Bluetooth and a phone clip.
    Great game.

    For me the Duke's biggest drawback wasn't so much the size, but the really steep angle of the face button layout. It felt almost vertical.

    I actually love the Wii U controller and just until last month I picked up the pro controllers …I think was amazing and fun..the good thing about the wii and Wii U is the option of better first party controllers even though some games requieres the originals…but they both were needed for the switch…great list and video sir

    The Wii controllers were really weird but it worked for such an out-of-box console. I miss the Nintendo Wii, that console was what made me feel that we were getting close to something like virtual reality gaming.

    I think we can all agree the original Wii controls were terrible with the nunchuck but what I loved about that controller is that it would play audio into the controller from the particular game itself sometimes as a way to give you queues or feedback. Once the Wii Motion Plus attachment came in and the individual combo controllers I liked it. I also do agree that the Wii U controller was not fun when I first bought the system like..I immediately bought a Wii U Pro Controller lol. The one I'm surprised you didn't list is the US/Canada Sega Saturn Controller...that thing was horrible and would hurt my thumbs. I didn't find out until years later that the Japanese controller and later editions of it was modeled after the Sega Genesis 6-Button controller but includes L & R which is more comfortable and accurate.

    I actually thought the WiiU controller was surprisingly light and comfortable for the most part, but the screen was usually pointless for me. I thought it was going to be more like a console version of the DS, but most of the time it just ran the game on both the TV and screen which was kind of distracting and annoying.

    Haha, always seems weird when Johnny talks about stuff he hates! For me it would be when I started getting my first arcade emulators in the mid-90s and I had to play them with my PC keyboard. Man, that was just so crappy. Gradius/Nemesis was just ruined! But I was so excited about playing actual arcade ROMs at home for free I didn;t give a crap and I soon managed to get my Dreamcast arcade stick interfaced with my PC. Great video as always, hope you're all well over there.

    Anyone remember the NeGcon controller for PS1? it was like a standard controller, but it rotated in the middle so you could twist it analog style. One side forward, other side back. Wip3out XL advertised it as the ultimate way to play the game and I always wanted one because I LOVED that game so so much. The controller was supposedly geared specifically for driving games as you could have the control of a gamepad with the precision of a steering wheel, but I never got to experience one in and actual game. I found one like, 10 years later in a bargain bin at GameStop and almost bought it until I picked it up and felt how... loosey goosey? .. it was. like.. Maybe it was broken, but there was no tactile feedback for when you had the controller centered, so I could just imagine starting a race and immediately drifting off to one side, or same thing with a straightaway.

    I can't really think of one that I don't like but if I have to pick one, it probably will be the original PS1 controller, before dualshock. The D-pad was split and far apart and most early PS1 game are already accepting 3D and 8 direction movement whereas when you play them with just the D-pad it really digs into your thumbs after a while.

      Ps1 Dpad isn't that great. I get blister on fighting games using those hard edges dpad on ps1. However I'm okay with it. It's not the worst I've seen.
      I would put Joycon as #1.

  • @XenosbioZ

    Yup, I was gonna say Dreamcast even though it LOOKS fantastic, I don’t like the cord sticking out it’s butt and the trigger buttons always felt like it’s removing my finger nails, like I get this kind of tingling sensation when pressing them, and the grip sides feel way too small.
    I absolutely hate joycons though! The drift sucks, the dpad sucks, can’t even slide my thumb around (it gets stuck before the left or right button when I try to do a hadoken), and the buttons just get stuck!! Feels the cheapest ever and they’re way too tiny, giving me hand cramps)

    The Jaguar controller does not deserve the number 2 spot imo. It's actually not a terrible controller if you spend time with it. The extra buttons really don't detract from the experience. The overlays are kinda cool and nostalgic. The Jaguar 6 button controller is pretty great even.

    I'm with you on most of these choices, and kudos for having the courage to pick controllers for popular systems. I liked the Dreamcast, sure, but the first party controller is chock full of weird flaws (poor D-pad, not enough buttons for fighters, a cord that hangs downward, a window for that pointless VMU, etc.) and the third party controllers only got worse from there.
    I'm old enough to remember when game controllers were almost universally bad. Atari 2600, ColecoVision, Intellivision, Atari 5200... bleech. They're stiff and/or unresponsive and/or have keypads that required easily lost overlays and complicated the experience.

    #1 controller I hate is the right Joycon for the Switch.
    Using the Switch in portable mode is miserable for me because of that right analog stick. It is constantly touching your thumb and it feels horrible when playing any action game. Especially when you are playing a game that prioritizes the B and Y buttons.

      I honestly have no idea what's wrong with the 3DO controller... It was basically a standard Genesis/Mega Drive pad, just more sturdy with shoulder buttons, a headphone jack (& volume dial) & a select button.
      Sure, it had the daisy chain link at the top, but the controller itself was just a slightly improved Genesis/Mega Drive pad.
