So I filmed and had this episode edited 3 weeks ago and almost released it last sunday but put up games I Played Recently. I have not even watched Scott The Wozs episode, pure coincidence!
The fact your holding Lunar just warms my heart. I’m still holding my breath waiting for that Lunar series retrospective! Lol 😂 awesome job as always keep up the good work bro glad your back to uploading.
I thought that was kinda funny. By the way I HAVE used the memory card slot in PS2 cases sometimes when I went to compete with friends in Armored Core III back in the day. However I did also have a generic CD jewel case specifically for PS1 cards that carried 4 cards. I even separated my save files by game type. Two RPG specific cards a card just for action games and one for shmups. As for some of my favorites overall? I loved the PS1 and PS2 cases as well as my Dreamcast games. But I have a special type of nostalgia for that era because that's when I started buying my games on my own with my own money. Before then either they were gifts from family or they were my older brother's buys. The first console that was specifically mine having been the PS2 and the Dreamcast. My brother wanting nothing to do with the Dreamcast because he was spending too much time going up to date some married chick in Toronto that he met on EverQuest. A woman who ended up being his guild leader's wife no less. Yeah, that was awkward hearing about at the time. I was sitting there playing PSO and there my brother was bragging about being the other guy for this woman with four kids. Always pissed me off when he would pull the cord from my Dreamcast modem so he could go and flirt online. I thought it pathetic really.
This is the kind of obscure hardcore gaming content I need. Incredible. Something 99% of consumers wouldn’t notice or even care about - and HCG has a vid on it
Yeah, I take my time reading them so I can feel more comfortable playing the game and there was still stuff I missed. I remember playing FF7 in middle school and loved it. I played it again later in high school reading the manual again before I played and realized I didn't even know about materia growth the first playthrough.
I never did this. So many gamers seem obsessed with manuals and having memories of reading them. I never took them out, just didn't see the point of them.
I loved to take the manual with me when i had to go to work. Couldn't wait for work to be over to get back home to play again. But times have changed massively and tbh, i don't really enjoy playing video games anymore. Games are not appealing anymore and almost everything is digital. Even CD versions are another 50GB download at least and my gosh, all the day one patch crap... I miss the days when you bought a game, came home, plugged it in and the game was loaded within seconds and you could start playing. Manuals were always nice to look at. Especially the artwork.
Glad to see you are feeling better Johnny. Puts a smile on my face every time I see a new happy console gamer video. Please do some fighting game content!?
PAL PlayStation (much thicker than a regular CD case) and GameBoy cases (when they used to come in individual plastic cases inside the square outer cardboard box) are definitely my most nostalgic.
I actually used that PS2 memory card holder a lot but I was younger, it was convenient when bringing games over to a friends houses and not having a loose memory card. Copy movable data onto my 2nd memory card and leave my main card at home lol.
Man, i really miss game manual especially the color ones with gorgeous artworks and cool comic strip like MGS 2, No More Heroes, etc. Johnny, maybe you can do “Best Manual Book” for your next video?
Johnny, I'm not sure if you missed it. But the Sega Genesis also had a plastic version of the 'red band' boxes, they were not just made in cardboard. In fact, one of my all time favorite console game cases were specifically those Genesis cases in plastic with the vertical "GENESIS" on the left side (the 'red band'). For example, just check the red band plastic case for the original Mortal Kombat, I have the original authentic one and it looks very good to this day. In my opinion the red band cases (in plastic) were the best one on the Genesis.
I gotta say I like the Vita cases a lot. They are like the Switch, which I would consider a second best. They are small but not too small, they are rectangular which is nice to display the art of the game and easy to put on a shelf.
For me it is the PAL PS1 cases, theres something about the embossed PlayStation font on the side which makes it feel unique and elegant. Delicate sure, but very distinctive from the generic CD jewel case. On a side note, i also appreciated on PS1 how platinum prints didn't compromise the cover art!
by far the older Genesis plastic cases! durable, easy to read, protective. The Sega Saturn one seemed cool at first, but was bulky and the hinge broke easily. it also could have been a lot smaller and lighter. DS/3DS would be my next favorite
I used the memory card holders back in the day. If I was going to a friend's house to play some games, it was nice to just pop my save file in the case with the games I was bringing over. It did backfire on me once though. I traded in a GameCube game (can't remember what) and I didn't realize until later that I had left a memory card in the case and it was my only one. So not only did I lose my ability to save games, I didn't even get my 2 bucks for trading in a memory card!
I really really miss manuals. Man I wish I still had my whole collection of games from Atarii to Colecovision. I can't even remember what a colecovision or attari game case looked like. I'm 47 btw.
I'm a sucker for the DS, 3DS, and Vita cases. Similar to what you said about the switch cases, the size of them look nice. Plus, DS games had some really nice manuals.
I just wish the spines were a little easier to tell apart instead of just text. It looks nice and unified when you have a few games but it gets harder and harder to find the game you're looking for after a while. Otherwise, big fan as well
Play them all. And then play Phantasy Star Online 2. It's free and a big uptade will come out soon. (Technically it's PSO 3 but SEGA want to keep PS02 players..) ua-cam.com/video/1kcDZiU4yQ8/v-deo.html 😉
Great video! I always see retro games in stores with just the cartridge so it was cool to see the cases. One you didn't do was the Xbox one cases which are a little weird they're thinner then the PS4, have uniformed boarder colors on the spine and for some reason the disk is on the left side when you open them not on the right its almost as if every case is backwards. I would have to say I love the PS1 and Switch cases the most!
The dreamcast cases in europe have a nice blue insert ,looks good always liked that, always loved the small c64 tape covers some times they were in a nice box.
Great topic! The larger cases such as 3DO were all about shelf real estate in the shops. I worked in an independent games shop back when the 3DO came out. The bigger the box the easier it would catch the customers eye over the competition. Back then there were more players in the field, it wasn’t just Sega and Nintendo anymore so the newcomers had to try and make themselves stand out and get noticed.
Some PlayStation 2 game cases also had a spot for your memory card. It was usually an rpg or game that took longer to beat and the card holder was there so you would know which memory card it was on and also if you were bringing it over to a friend or relatives house to play where you left off. My friend was in the hospital battling leukemia and I would play Final Fantasy X while he watched. It seemed like he was holding on just to see the ending of the game because once I beat the game I went down to the cafeteria to get a bite to eat and when I returned I thought he was just sleeping. So, I let him be and went home only to get a phone call saying he had passed away.
It's worth mentioning there were at least three different styles of 3DO boxes, all long box size: • There were the thin long boxes like the ones you showed. • There were 'shoebox' style HARD long boxes they had lids that opened up shoebox style. • And there were cardboard long boxes that were 'hinged' with a locking strip of black plastic that ran along the outer spine of the box. The flimsy thin ones you showed in this video were easily the worse of the three. Great topic, and best wishes to you and your family. Stay healthy, bro.
For the PS1, before the long "box" cardboard case there were 2 different cases. The first one was clear plastic like the saturn games (1st release of tekken). Then there was a hybrid plastic/cardboard box like the toshinden 2 game. Finally they became cardboard longbox, just before the cd case.
This is such a fun topic! I also have a huge soft spot for the PSone double-CD cases. After FFVII, they pretty much became a symbol of a big, epic game, to the point where some single disc games would still come in double-sized cases. And if course, the Switch is a huge favorite. I'm a pretty big fan of the cases for smaller media, I know you didn't talk about handhelds in this video, but I adore the cases for PSP and Vita games, too
Great video. This points out something interesting about the industry over the years, after a period of creative thinking and innovating, they are stuck on the "standardized" phase, and I mean not only on boxes (which arent even a thing now, they took artwork out, maps out, then they were just boxes now not even boxes anymore...everything is STANDARD, stories, gameplay, ALL THE SAME, thats why we go back to retro
Ahhh! I’m in a warm blanket of nostalgia! Quality game cases, color manuals with unique artwork, occasional extras inside like mini walkthroughs. ....today, that’s still around. But it’s the deluxe edition🤔
I really, really like the Master System case and artwork. I don't know, those lines remember of something like aestheticism or something. Aside from that, definitely Saturn and Switch cases, they're awesome. Some N64 boxes are up there too, particularly Ocarina of Time.
I always loved the SEGA Master System cases. I really like uniformity, and the white grid paper back grounds just felt really, I don't know 'grown up', or something. Maybe I was weird kid, but SMS boxes seemed like something you'd find in Office Depot in the software section rather than Toys 'R' Us, and that sort of made it a little cooler to me. Go figure.
It's also nice to see how there was a difference between regions in boxing, not only the box art. For example at Sega with the Saturn cardboard versions we had in Europe or the Blue Dreamcast jewel cases that where quiet unique, or cardboard Gameboy boxes in different sizes that came from Asian regions. Nowadays the cases seem all to be similar around the world besides artwork and title differences.
I would've used it with the GameCube cases when I spent a the weekends at my dad's, but my memory card was made by Nyko, so it was too large to fit into the slot, so I kept the little case for the memory card all these years later.
North American SEGA SATURN cases are my all time favorite. Yes fragile, but if kept/found in good condition they are amazing. They have this shine on the front that illuminates the artwork so nicely when displayed. The later artworks that filled the entire cover are best exampled of this. A US Saturn collection also just look amazing all spined.
I never realized the we had so many different boxes in the European versions of the games! Saturn, Ps1, Dreamcast all are different and I'd say more interesting. We didn't have the standard cd jewelcases at all. Nintendo games have the same boxes though! Once again, great episode!!
thanks man, it was really fun to see these things. and its really really fun that i come to youtube day by day and i see you upload a new video! really makes me happy! :)
Man, that Resident Evil 2 case brings back all kinds of nostalgia! My favorite cases are the SNES. The SNES was the first console I remember getting when I was a kid. We had a NES when I was very young, but I was a little too young to enjoy it until later.
Sounds weird but I can smell the different system games when you open them. Like the nes games had a distinct smell when ur all up in it blowing it off. And the cd jewel cases opening them for the first time
I love the box for the Philips G7000 game "Quest for the Rings". It made the game feel a lot more magical as the game itself had horrendous graphics while the artwork of the manual was amazing. "Quest for the Rings" was 1 out of 3 games that incorporated tabletop gameplay. The other 2 were "Conquest of the World" and "The great wall street fortune hunt". Generally I really love the art style of the G7000 games from the European releases that were quite different from the north american releases.
Ah The Bouncer, I really love that game despite what a lot of other people say about it. Not to mention that's where Square got the idea for Sora from Kingdom Hearts.
Genesis is probably my favorite case, just simple and classic and no beat-up cardboard to worry about. Famicom disc system game case are great as well. Love the discs and the case.
We in the PAL region got the lower end of the stick. We didn´t get the CD jewel cases fro PS1. The PS1 cases were thick and fragile. Cracks up extremely easy. The PS2 has the same DVD format BUT the covers have a boring design when displaying the games on the shelf. We only have a white background with a regular black print of the title. You can see for yourself at around 18:06 when Johnny is holding the Wii box and you see the game title on its side. Putting it in perspective, it is a poor sight to se a full shelf of PS2 games when all you see is black and white displaying what games you have in your collection. The NTSC versions are better showing each box their own unique print. My favourite system is the Super NIntendo but the cardboard boxes are fragile. My combo of stuff would be; the Snes box would be like the SEGA MEGA DRIVE (Genesis), the cartridges would have the US design and the system the PAL design. Love your show. Hope you and your family are well. Greetings from Sweden!
Man, that took me back. Favorites for me where the PS1 cases and the SNES. Also have a soft spot for the Original NES cases. I also liked the original Gameboy cases that a had full clear plastic case surrounding the game with a button to open them up.
Great ep. I really think the Genesis clamshells are a solid design, especially the ones that had the red stripping which unified them. I also am fascinated by the long Sega CD jewel cases with the blue striping, so damn cool.
One of my favorites is the earlier ColecoVision boxes that had the arcade cabinet on the front. The earlier Genesis cases is my other favorite. Right now, I’m re-acquiring my Genesis collection after selling it years ago but I’m only interested in those early black cases with the gray grid.
I know you're not talking about PC games, but back in the day, I used to play a lot of them, and my favorite in terms of package was the Ultima IV game. It came in a box, as usual for PC games back then, but it contained a cloth map -- which I thought was the coolest thing I'd seen.
I love the plastic Sega cases. Clicky and blocky like blockbuster VHS boxes. The Sega CD case is also super cool. I like the dimensions and the thick sides.
Very cool video, excellent idea for a topic to cover. Was fun going back in time. My favorites are probably the sega ones and atari 2600 (i'm a little older than you don't think you covered this one here )
The Super Metroid big box is personally my favourite, I saw this as a kid and it made me have an appreciation for nintendo games. I bought Mario World, Zelda LTTP and Super Metroid. Seeing how chaotic the boxart was for a kid like me it was super mind blowing and the box was huge as hell. It really drew me into the game I even read the massive manual/walkthrough but then I stopped a few pages in because of spoilers.
I must admit this was more interesting than I thought it was going to be 😊. Was cool going back in time, neo geo was such a monster. Great to see you have the new japan / fire pro game on PS4 as well.
This video appeared at just the right time, Thanks Johny. I wanted to collect one game from each system and I was curious what the cases were for each.
They are still much better than the PAL Dreamcast cases, which were super flimsy and so easy to crack/break. Ordering them on eBay and having them posted is like a lottery as to the condition you receive it in.
@@Flared That's what happens when I buy ps1 games a lot of times. They have a picture of it with no cracks and when I get it it's got one on the front of it.
Switch for the artwork on the outside and inside, for the space saving purposes, and because they're generally all uniform except for the insignia on the bottoms. I just line up Capcom (sub categories for Megaman games, Street Fighter games) games together, Nintendo (with sub categories for Mario's, Zelda's, etc) so it at least looks like a line up of orderly cases.
Love seeing the mattel sticker on the smb 3 box. I live in the lower 48 but have a cib nes action set from canada and it has mattel stickers and mattel distribution stickers on it too.
Great video, I was always fascinated by how the cases changed over the years too! It's quite weird that the Famicom had landscape boxes, but the NES had portrait. Then with the Super Famicom and SNES they swapped round, so we could never have the same artwork as Japan on the boxes because of the different orientation! Strange decision...
So I filmed and had this episode edited 3 weeks ago and almost released it last sunday but put up games I Played Recently.

The best part about games back in the day was reading everything in the manual.

But times have changed massively and tbh, i don't really enjoy playing video games anymore.

That Super Mario 3 case is beautifully preserved. Whoever initially owned it (assuming you're not the original owner) took lovingly good care of.

Unreal how flimsy they were lol
That´s right but I still prefer them in look and style.
The PAL Dreamcast cases were a nightmare!
I think they were better than a CD case though, you can read the names without being close up.
I gotta say I like the Vita cases a lot. They are like the Switch, which I would consider a second best.

I always loved seeing a CD and Sega Saturn cases. The grande size, the great art. It’s definitely a great trip back to my childhood.
PS Vita has hands down my favourite game cases.
Simple. Clean. Kingdom Hearts.
Agreed
Same
Switch should had cases this size, the ones they use look so silly when you open them.
100% absolutely love them myself.
Seeing the old NES and SNE games that are still in their boxes gives me goosebumps.
I found the double CD cases for ps1 amusing when there was only one disc (looking at you vandal hearts).
I'm a sucker for the DS, 3DS, and Vita cases. Similar to what you said about the switch cases, the size of them look nice. Plus, DS games had some really nice manuals.
Please do a handheld cases episode, i would love to see that
Without nostalgia, I’d probably say the switch cases are my favorite.
half the size and twice the price
I'd prefer them to be 3DS size, but they probably did it to distinguish new Switch games from 3DS games

@mazrimalthor the multiplats have exactly the same content but cost far more on Switch. Resident Evil 4 for example.
Your passion for phantasy star makes me wanna try it someday.

That Super Mario Bros 3 box is immaculate. Not easy to keep those in such condition so all credit to you.
The Neo Geo one reminds me of a VHS case lol good times.
I love the PS1 cases, nostalgia definitely hits hard with these. Seeing 1 always takes me back to a simpler, happy place....
Sega Saturn/CD longboxes EASILY the best cases of all time as far as looks go. Just too bad they're so fragile
Neo geo and turbografx are really cool too, but I've never had one and they seem prohibitively expensive

I never realized the we had so many different boxes in the European versions of the games! Saturn, Ps1, Dreamcast all are different and I'd say more interesting. We didn't have the standard cd jewelcases at all. Nintendo games have the same boxes though! Once again, great episode!!
Sega CD/Saturn longboxes are my favorite cases. Also Panzer Dragoon Saga is a masterpiece.
Awesome Johnny. Love these Sunday videos thank you sir
thanks man, it was really fun to see these things. and its really really fun that i come to youtube day by day and i see you upload a new video! really makes me happy!
And the cd jewel cases opening them for the first time
I always remember the smell of games I rented depending on the store. Its wierd but I miss it. lol
Always LOVE when a new HCG video pops up feed! More please!
Fun watch, you continue to do videos we never thought we would want til we see them :)
Ah The Bouncer, I really love that game despite what a lot of other people say about it. Not to mention that's where Square got the idea for Sora from Kingdom Hearts.
I do remember game cases for consoles and computers and handhelds fairly well from the mid 80s on wards. Been a crazy ride lol
The dreamcast cases and ps1 were so different in UK. Genesis cases were like our megadrive cases
Scott has entered the chat.
Totally thought this. Wild they had the same topic the same week. Definitely just a coincidence, but too funny.
redwingdog22 do u mean Scott the wozz
@@cozzy4447 yeah. his newest (?) episode was exactly the same topic.
Thanks. I just heard his voice
Yup, how original, it be cooler if he mentioned the woz
The european Dreamcast boxes was really beautiful and unique :-) My favorite gamecase.
Great ep. I really think the Genesis clamshells are a solid design, especially the ones that had the red stripping which unified them. I also am fascinated by the long Sega CD jewel cases with the blue striping, so damn cool.
Johnny is my therapy.
Sins?
Xvideo is mine... but each to their own.
One of my favorites is the earlier ColecoVision boxes that had the arcade cabinet on the front. The earlier Genesis cases is my other favorite. Right now, I’m re-acquiring my Genesis collection after selling it years ago but I’m only interested in those early black cases with the gray grid.
Hey, this was a really good video idea topic!
The way you put the manual back into the SMB3 box made my heart skip a beat...
Very cool video, excellent idea for a topic to cover. Was fun going back in time. My favorites are probably the sega ones and atari 2600 (i'm a little older than you don't think you covered this one here )
I love that Link's Awakening shirt you are wearing! That's awesome!
3:02 I see you Johnny, sneaking the Streets of Rage soundtrack in the background ;) Awesome video as always!! :)
19:08 "I like it when everything kind of matches... Don't look at this! This doesn't make any sense, does it?"
Sega Genesis would be my pick. The original cases. Not the cardboard.
I like the switch cases with recent gaming the cover art for the two Deadly Premonition games Are brilliant
Yes the DP cases are really something special, right Zach?
I must admit this was more interesting than I thought it was going to be 😊. Was cool going back in time, neo geo was such a monster. Great to see you have the new japan / fire pro game on PS4 as well.
I'm really fond of the PS1 dual disc cases and Turbo Grafx 16... Dreamcast will always hold a special place in my heart.
I like the camera angles from your POV while you're showing things.
It's def either the PS1 multidisc case or Switch cases. I love how most of them have separate art inside :)
This video appeared at just the right time, Thanks Johny. I wanted to collect one game from each system and I was curious what the cases were for each.
I always hated CD jewel cases. They always broke too easily at the hinges. Of course I was young and harder on them than I am today.
Its to bad ps1 games couldn't of came out in cartridges. Sucks they are so fragile.
Great video. Very nostalgic. I remembered my Sega Genesis times with this video, and how happy I was when I got my Genesis for Christmas in 1991.
I too like the double sized PS1 and Dreamcast cases, and sometimes you got a chunky manual or two inside!
Thanks for the video pal. I appreciate your existence :)
Love seeing the mattel sticker on the smb 3 box. I live in the lower 48 but have a cib nes action set from canada and it has mattel stickers and mattel distribution stickers on it too.
I think the plastic cases that snap shut are the best. Makes the most sense since they're durable.
One of my favorite parts of the collection is literally the presentation of cases lol.
Was waiting for the Sega Saturn & Dreamcast, maybe some N64, but once again thank you superb video well done!
