  • Deer season is here and Chris Parrish explains why grunting to a buck in the early season is an effective tactic. In this how-to video, learn why bucks and does are contacting each other this time of the year. Whitetails are social all year long and the early season is a great time for light contact grunts to get deer in shooting range.

Grunt once or twice is fine in prerut.....Get a bottle of code red or blue buck urine....it seals the deal. Code red is cheap and works as good as any on the market....got a 10 point with it last year in rut. Doesn't take much...they have great noses. I use a drag string to my stand and then hold a cotton ball on the end of the bottle and tip it. don't pour it....it wastes the urine.....put three cotton balls around your stand. My may not know you're there.....the grunt gets their attention to as far as 400 yds. Then they smell the urine.
In early rut the bucks can get very agressive and run towards you....do not put it on your body, especially if you're on the ground. The bucks are not as picky with the grunt if you add buck urine.
During rut I use a tending grunt with buck urine and doe estrus....(rut is about the end of the first week of november to january) (shot my big buck last year dec 22nd, he was still in rut in NC). I make a 50/50 mix of the urine. The tending grunt is two long and two short all at once.
The most important thing is to be still....after you blow the grunt they will know exactly where you are......watch with the wind.....they seem to always come with their nose into the wind. They will bust you if you are moving. I always go into the woods without a flashlight.....the drag string with urine is the kicker....you may spook them a bit but they usually don't go far....they seem a bit confused so they stick around.....then when it get's light enough to shoot. Blow the grunt.....it seals the deal.....the big ones take a while to come in sometimes....the 10 point I shot this year walked by me in the dark and didn't come into the open woods until 8 pm...he was there all along watching from a thicket...trying to figure me out.....shot him at 8:05am. Usually blow it every 20 minutes or so. You can blow it all you want but then you'll move more and will probably get busted. The secret is to do all this every time you hunt. I had 5 bucks come to me last year...I get a shot at one big one every year. It doesn't work everytime...usually it's because there isn't a buck in the area. Been doing this for 20 years and it amazes me every year....it's like a female dog in heat.....the boys go to her.
For pre rut it can be like a man hitting on your wife in front of you....they get pissed. The buck says you're in my area....get out! (pre rut - oct 1 to about nov 7)
For rut mixing urine and a grunt is like a doe yelling Im ready, come breed me. There's another buck with me and he wants to breed me!
Buck urine and a grunt in pre rut. (one long)
Buck urine/and doe estrus in rut with a tending grunt. (2 long two short)
