I once went to a petting zoo and I had a full grown buck walk up to me making those “curious grunt” sounds and I was NOT scared. I innately knew that he was friendly and wanted the food I had for him… my guy cousin on the other hand thought the buck was gunna try something and came quickly over. But I swear, there was nothing threatening in that tone or the walk he was walking. My “gut instincts” have saved me time and time again and it never got triggered during this event ❤

Growing up from about the age of 4 till I was 13 years, I hunted and learned a lot from my grandpa ( my dads never been a hunter). Once my grandpa passed away when I was 13 I had to learn and grow as a hunter on my own, I am now 24 and this will be my first year ever hunting with a compound bow( no one in my family knew how to use one.). With that being said, thank you mister Waddell for all the endless amounts of knowledge over the years.

I feel where your coming from. Had a horrible teacher for hunting with my stepdad from 10 to 17. Never even shot a deer til i was about 30. And just killed my first deer with a bow last season at 34 years old a Split tine 9 pt buck. 3 weeks later killed a 10 pt with a 2 ft spread and 8 in brow tines at 215 yds with a 450 bushmaster

I come from a family of hunters... I tried but I've got a bleeding heart YET I eat meat - I love venison!! I was heard a buck snort at me at sun-up the other morning and was looking for a meaning to that sound and stumbled across your video. GREAT VIDEO! I'll pass this on along to my hunting family members.

"The bucks aren't worried about social media" 🤣 hilarious contextual one liner. I'm new to hunting but it's cool to hear you making all these different inflections through the same tool to transmit different meanings through subtle tonal differences. It's like you speak deer and I really feel like it makes sense as you explain it.

Had my youngest son in the stand with me for the first time just to watch pre season. 4 nice bucks came out to the feeder. The oldest deer kept looking up at us and my son kept moving. Ths buck busted us with a loud blow. All 4 bucks took off running. Within 1 minute all 4 returned and ate corn for another 20 minutes just watching us as we watched them. Hell of a first watch for my son.

Such a great video! Thank you!! Been using grunt calls for years with good success, but as an average hunter, I like (actually need) to watch/listen to the pros every year to refresh my understanding of what effective calling should sound like. Great demonstration - thank you! The information and wisdom you pass on from a lifetime professionally dedicated to the pursuit of what is all of our obsession & passion, hunting & the outdoors, is immeasurable! And the way you share your knowledge with such humility and respect, is like I’m listening to one of my buddies, or maybe even more accurately, like fatherly advise. Every video is like I’m talking to an old friend. Priceless!! Thank you!!!
    👍😁

    • @ishnifusmeadle

Welcome. I too didn't really have a mentor or much guidance other than research and woods time. And am honestly still new....only been hunting for maybe 7 seasons. Now I live up new England way and stuffs different in my neck of the woods, and this is solely my experiences, but I've almost never heard deer calling in any form, outside of a couple doe bleats when a group were feeding spread out in the woods. Many folks fall prey to thinking they need all the "right tools" to go hunting, and round here it basically seems to boil down to you firearm/bow, you warm clothes, some type of scent blocker (or least trying to mitigate human scent) and the wind. Most things sold to hunters are like the wonder items sold on late night infomercials. That said having a grunt/bleat and maybe a rattle and knowing how to use it are definitely worth doing, just don't stake ur hunt on em. Use them 1/4 as much as you think u should.

I do a doe estrus bleat call followed by a buck grunt a lot. Trying to get that scenario out there that a buck thinks there is a hot doe out there and another buck is trying to chase it. It is worth many times for me and it got me one record buck in the state. Still hurt a great video. I enjoy watching and listening to others techniques to still learn from.

I remember the first time I heard one grunt exactly like you said… I was hunting in the morning I came out about nine or 930 I walked about 100 yards out of the woods and realized I left my flashlight… I was unsure if I would hunt that stand that evening so I decided to go back and get my flashlight. When I got back just about to my stand, I looked and there was a doe about 20 yards from my stand… All of a sudden I heard that real quick grunting noise sounded just like a pig. I actually looked around in amazement like what in the world and I couldn’t believe it 🤦‍♀️It was the biggest 6 point I have ever seen in real time😜🤪😢😂 he just about ran over me and his nose to the ground running back-and-forth😜🤪😂

There's one such grunt that I never heard you mention, and thats the long projected grunt that a Buck makes when he's got a doe and he's warning other bucks to stay away. Only the Dominant Bucks make this call and it's very effective on bringing another Dominant Buck into the area if one is within hearing distance. I heard this grunt the day before I harvested my previous all time best, the next morning I tried to mimic that sound using my grunt call, and he came walking out of the holler looking for a fight. EVERY hair on his back was bristled up and he was looking for the fight I was calling him too.
Ever since I heard this call, I've been harvesting some nice Bucks and have had the oppurtunity at no success to harvest a nice buck, and I really believe it's one that will benefit alot of hunters.

I promise you I’ve grunted in more bucks with the OG flextone bone collector than ANY other grunt call. I’ve been side by side with buddies in the stand and watched them grunt at deer with no response and hit the bone collector and they turn on a dime. It also stays warm like he said and you can blow through it almost silently to unstick the reed on bitter cold days.

they actually do make a Deer Blow call. Don’t look like much, but it’s best used when you are stalking deer and want deer to move in thick cover. The “alert” make deer begin to leave the area. Especially affective near bedding.

Good information had tried calling in the past but might give it a shot again. But is it true that a doe bleat needs to be short? I watched a video guy claiming that can call is wrong it is too long and that is an alarm call. So any truth to that?

  • @jakemitchell1671
    @jakemitchell1671 Рік тому

I tried grunting and rattling for years with no success. I gave up. Then someone taught me some of the same principles regarding when, where, and why that Michael discusses here. Since that time the grunt call - and perhaps to a larger extent, the doe bleat - have helped me harvest many deer. I used to just grunt randomly. Mr. Waddell explains that it's all about context - time of year, rut, situations....excellent video, and his passion is obvious.
Aside: one late afternoon I heard a mature buck walk into a group of 3-4 younger bucks huddled around a hot doe and make a sound I've never been able to document or find anyone ever talking about it: It was a very fast, high pitched "buzzing" sound. Interestingly, the mature buck ignored the other deer and started feeding on acorns. I've never heard this sound before or since, and evidently it's extremely rare. But I saw his mouth making the sound. It was very fast click, but not like Michael demonstrated here. It was higher pitched.
