For years I was the same way with calling, I was always to scared or nervous to mess up. My first great success came 4 years ago, I had a doe being run by a nice 10 that I never had on camera so I gave him a few aggressive grunts to get his attention and boy did I ever. He stopped dead in his tracks and looked right to me from about 200yrds out. I gave him another long aggressive grunt then hit him with a snort wheeze. I hit that snort wheeze and you could see he was mad. Constantly licking his nose and ears pinned back, he started checking me down wind, stopped at 145yrds, gave him another aggressive grunt and snort wheeze and he took off like a rocket right straight to me. Grabbed my bow and literally had to yell at him to get him stopped for a shot, 18yrd shot with a strong quartering to me shot, I dropped the pin on his chest tight to the closest shoulder and let it fly. To this day still my biggest buck I've taken and hands down one of the most exciting hunts I've ever been on. Public ground in a place I decided to hit last minute for a evening hunt but that hunt forever changed the way I hunted and how I felt about using calls. Just don't be afraid to watch a video like this and go out to try, you don't know if you don't try. Hope ya'll have a great season, aim small miss small and may your shots be true.
I to was afraid to scare them away so one after none I saw a doe about 200 yards out and I said let's play and I called that doe up from a valley to about 4 feet in front of me and of course I used the fawn bleat then the dominant doe bleat and it worked ha.ha ha!!!
I'm in Michigan .I don't record my hunts. But . Several times over the years I've used a fawn distress call to call in a doe with a big buck behind her. In Several different circumstances this was the only way I could get the buck close enough to seal the deal..
Watched this video for the first time yesterday. Implemented your feedback on blind calling and dropped the biggest deer I’ve shot to date 10 minutes after I finished the calling sequence with the snort wheeze!! Great content! Appreciate you!!
Dad gave me his original True Talker today. Been practicing all day with it. Trying to get the clicking sound right. First time I'll get to hunt with a call of any kind. Never got to go hunting as a kid and so Ive spent the last two years apprenticing under my best friend. First year I didnt even hunt, I observed the entire time and then got to learn how to field dress the deer and get it ready for processing. Last year I did get to hunt but no calls or rattles, Took my first deer with a reflex shot. This year I get to manage myself with my buddy a ways away in his own stand, with my dads call that was responsible for every deer he got up until I was 7. I also fell out of the stand. Given the pattern of Like father like son events, I expect with some more practice, Ill be able yo tackle rifle season this year without breaking a sweat.....or anything else. Thank you for the education. Ill use it well
Good content, I've also learned to never grunt with the end of the call facing directly at the deer.. deer practically smell in 3D and was taught if don't blow in there direction makes it harder for them to pinpoint your exact location.
I've done it sparingly, so not at all any pro, simple grunts if I think of it. Called in two does cold once, calling back to me as they appeared...other time saw a single file line walking slow up a hill & away from me, one low grunt & the whole line turned around 180 degrees & walked slow right back down toward me! Shot the first one, a button, nobody moved, shot the next one, big doe, and then they scattered every direction, 2 does ran right at me, could see the hole in the one I hit which dropped soon after they got by me but I shot the other & got her too, hundred yards away. So a triple, of course you don't believe it but I was there & know it's true. Was a Thanksgiving Day, appropriately. Only two times a grunt call produced for me.
That was awesome info. I resemble a lot of the thoughts about uneducated callers so I appreciate the thorough explanations of everything. Excellent content. Thanks for sharing. Can’t wait to put it into practice in a couple days.
This is a very educational video. I've been using this sent and it seems to work. I grunted at a basket 8 and he didn't respond at all. So I just waited on him to make his mind up.
Great video! Been hunting hogs for years in FL but going to GA and PA this fall to try to get my first buck. Bought this call yesterday and this video was jam packed with information. Thanks!
first time deer hunting this fall and dont want to call to often. I purchased the lil' swarty deer call by primos and seems to work great for me. i didnt want something so big and powerful. happy hunting to all! from illinois
Great video Jeff. First, I want to thank you for always sharing a Biblical faith based message! I always enjoy learning and hearing what you have to say. My question is, when using rattling antlers, what approximate size antlers do you think produce the best? Big 150+", smaller 100" so as not to intimidate bucks, or maybe mid size? Thanks!
Thank you very much for the insightful information. Question please: If calling should be reserved between October to December, what methods can we use to call deer in in September? For context, the area is public land but not many hunters because it is Archery only. At least I haven't seen many hunters (max 3) when I go Monday or Tuesday.
Good info. I hunt in sw OK. Haven’t needed to call in a deer but going to try this year. I have already harvested 3 does and I have some decent to big bucks around where I hunt. Thanks
PA. Archery opener is Oct 5th this year. Super pumped. But unless I understood wrong no grunting? This is only my 4th year hunting and 2nd year arxhery. Just want to optimize my chances.
Jeff a call I have used in North East and Canada is “ARRP” I have had a group of doe’s approach my deer stand making this call. I have used it to call in deer on multiple occasions. The woods her are thick the swamp bucks I’m hunting in Northern Maine Ontario Canada requires mostly blind calling there’s no seeing a deer over 80 yards. I find this call sound effective and another tool in the toolbox. I would enjoy talking to you about it got good things out of your video due to the only thing I can do here is blind call you were able to give me the reactions that I could be creating by blind calling you get to see your deer way before they come in
I just recently got into hunting and I have bucks on camera but only at night. I hunt on a pipeline I’ve tried a grunt but haven’t had any luck. Trued snort wheeze as well but no luck. Gotten a mama and 2 fawns to come
This evening, Oct 30 near Townsend MT. My wife and I decided to go for a walk on a 300 yrd wide x 1 mile long state section in search of white tail does. Early on we spot some does at the end of the section about to cross the fence into private. By the time we got close enough to shoot, they were all across the fence. What we didn't see before was the dandy 4x5 with the group. He walked right up to the fence and looked straight at us. We if course hit the dirt and got ready to shoot. We were pinned down at about 370 yards (Which is a fairly common occurrence in Montana) for about 10 minutes but could not shoot because he would not cross the fence, and why would he? His does are behind him safe and sound. If I would have had some basic calls and a basic knowledge of how to use them, I may have been able to coax this buck into jumping the fence and closing a little distance. That's why I'm watching this video tonight. I won't be going back out without some calls. Question: How do mule deer respond to calls? Thanks!
so im a newbie when it comes to any hunting at all and i just picked up a grunt call and a bleep call. starting out your hunt, would there be a call youd prefer starting with and if so why?

I never been hunting and I’m going to go this September by my self and had a question do I sit in the tree stand with the wind blowing at me or behind me or the side of me I’m 23 and got my hunting permit and license last year
Hey Dustin, we're so happy to hear that you are getting into hunting! If you are hunting deer, elk, or any other big game animal, you want the wind to be blowing at you in your face or in the direction that you think the animal will NOT come from. If the wind is blowing at your back, 99.9% of the time, the animal will smell you (maybe even from several hundred yards) & not come into shooting range. Every stand we hunt, the wind is almost always blowing straight at us in our face or could sometimes be a crosswind blowing in a direction the animals should not come from
Have you ever tried a bleat and grunt together (a buck chasing a doe)? I shot a 13 point using that method but, that was 5yrs ago. I’m wondering if it was by circumstance or if it’s something you use or have heard of other people using to call in deer?
Hi, Many thanks for posting this educational tutorial. Maybe a foolish question, but here goes: I hunt Black tail Deer in Northern Calif. Are these calls universal, or species-specific to your White Tail herds?

I hunt thick woods in south la and for blind later season calling what’s a good calling sequence for that ?
My hunting area is very wooded and I rarely can see more than 60 yards so I’m almost always blind calling. I never know when to call or how often
Every 30 to 40 minutes is a good indicator
I have always tested calls and scents at night time while spotting. There is no better way to know when the call is working in your area.
Is better to sound like a smaller buck or bigger buck when blind calling during november (grunt)
I'm in Wisconsin in dense woods and trails all over but likely to sit and not see them so calls bring them out. How often would you rattle if your blind calling? Once in the morning and evening, every 30 minutes, or ?
We would probably do it 2-3 times in the morning every 30-40 minutes & same in the evening time
It’s so similar to turkey huntin in a way is it? Sorry for all the messages
Is the calling there and Louisiana about the same?
I’ve called deer in since the day I’ve started hunting. I’ve had Bucks running up to me. Big a small bucks a does. It’s simple nothing complicated.
Correct!
Thank you Sir
What about heavy wooded areas like central alabama
What’s the best course of action if you blind call and a young buck with a small rack comes in and you don’t want to shoot him. Is your day done or can you wait for a while and blind call again hoping a better buck will come?
Yeah absolutely! We would just let that smaller buck work his way off & then maybe do another calling sequence 20-30 min later!
What’s the rattle your using?
What do you do when the bucks are showing on camera at nights and early morning but not during the day ?
U ever use scents hot doe ab Buck scent while ur calling ,.
I've killed a lot big bucks with doe bleat ,they coming running ,ever year ,old fateful .

Could I still blind call during mid November and during rifle season
Yes absolutely!
With high pressured white tail , like those found on puplic land in my area silence is golden ...
Sometimes silence is the best thing to do! 100% agree especially on high pressured areas!
What callers do you ja e for mule deer or can o e use the same caller .
Hey Peter, we would love to have an answer for this question but we really don't. Our main knowledge/expertise is whitetail deer. We could give you an answer on calling to mule deer but we don't have enough knowledge in that area to feel confident
Should you ever call if you’re hunting with bait?
yessir absolutely! We definitely call even if we're using bait. Now, we are careful with it & make sure nothing is on the Bait at the time of calling but we say go fir it. Especially if you see a shooter out roaming looking for does. They know the food is there & often times feel comfortable coming to check that area for a hot doe
What type of call should I get?
Hey Patrick, we would encourage you to look at the Woodhaven intimidator call! It’s $20 & the best call on the market in our opinion!
Did you ever get to try and call the doe in with a locked down buck?
Hey brother, we haven’t yet but our lockdown stage will begin here in the next week or so & if the opportunity presents itself, we will definitely try it
Is there any variation in southern deer or is it basically the same
Hey Tyler, I feel the technique is still the same no matter what part of the county you're in. However, the dates/right time to call are definitely different. Here in the Midwest area its usually end of October into November. Typically in the south, those dates are pushed back a little to coincide with the pre rut & rut
