I hope you fell better soon. I haven't had COVID, thank goodness because I work on a school bus. I have, however been diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma (skin cancer) near my eye couple weeks ago and am now on a chemo pill that, if Medicaid didn't cover, would be over $10k/month!! I have the Avatar extended edition (first movie) on Blu-ray. Are either of the 4k versions a worthwhile upgrade? My 4K TV isn't capable of Dolby Vision.

Liked your video get well soon I have an oled TV I don't have any of avitar on any ultra 4k Blu Ray yes I do agree streaming is no comparison to 4k Blu Ray even digital copy with Blu Ray disc 💿 isn't the same but digital copy is only good for portable devices like tablets and cellphone on the go id rather have discs even regular Blu Ray disc are better than streaming services 😊

Here's what just happened with my buying experience...
I checked out Walmart and I bought both of the 4K Collectors boxes. I handled them with utmost care, since I knew the packaging quality results in insurmountable scratches.
I go back home and immediately opened them up to inspect the disc conditions: Avatar 1 = box was in pristine condition dent-free, light scuffs on discs, but passable enough to own.
Avatar 2 = box was also pristine, but Discs 1 & 3 had deep, long scratches on each. The very next day, I went back to the same store to exchange A2 with an brand new copy, which was (surprisingly) still on the New Releases shelf.
Good news is that all discs this time had little to no scratches. Bad news is that the box has a huge, ugly dent on 1 corner, (and doesn't look aesthetically pleasing) sitting next to A1 Collector's box. Therefore, the lesson I learned was: You can't have your cake and eat it, too.
So, what would you do in my shoes? Go for another exchange mission at a different WM store?
I saw these at walmart and thinking about the price was like a huge hinderance for me. Your video is all the answers I need and I truly appreciate that you made this video while being sick. You are the hero we didnt ask for but need. Thank you!

Absolutely agree! My discs continue get stuck and residues while pulling them out of the pockets, difficulty!! Even got scratched on one of them! I had to find a used empty Blu-ray box and stored all 4 discs into it, call it the day 😂, oh well...

I have the original 4-K release of ''PART 1''that has the original case. When i got the 4 disc collector's set, i trashed the NON-DOLBY-VISION discs and put the collector's edition discs in the case. But i'm keeping the collector's edition box as it is really beautiful. I did the exact same thing with ''PART 2''.

Hi James i have just imported both Avatars to the UK..what would your suggestion be ( other than cleaning the discs, to deal with this tight pocket situation? Would you suggest using cd inner plastic sleeves to pull the discs in and out. Other than this there great packages. But the discs themselves are the most important factor?

Finally I bought and watched Both. They are wonderful, despite the blu-rays 3D are even better. By the way, on my country we have the italian package and the discs went without any scratch and it is easy to store and put off the discs, also the disc cases are made by soft cardboard so you don't scratch anything. Great, honest review and get well soon!
would love for Cameron to eventually do an even longer edition of the first film
im also a collector with nerve damage due to covid jab.... it has been 3 years with this horrible disease.... nerves grow slow, in a couple of yesrs, so its importnat to find the root cause to avood more damage...i think taking meds its the best for quality life

I’m gonna get the Best Buy steelbook version of the first one and I ordered the way of water 4 disc collectors edition and put my disks in the steelbook of the original release I’m so excited for these new releases because avatar the original was a reference quality disc for regular blu ray now these with Dolby vision can be the same

I wish Cameron would give us an extended cut of The Way of Water. The deleted scenes were pretty good. They made more sense of motivation and character
Question: Does it make a difference, image quality vise, between the 4K versions when I watch them on my Xbox One X? I believe the console does not support Dolby Vision when it comes to Blu-Ray playback.

After receiving my proper copies of both movies.
In Avatar out of the 14 additional scenes, would keep 4 may be 5. But dam no dolby atmos on it, hate that. Well may watch two first of extended cut that revert back to theatrical version. Only have hdr10 on my Samsung. I still see a difference.
Also hate how hard it us taking out the disk.

The steelbook version has a higher bitrate but only the theatrical release
I just have the original theatrical releases because I don't want to pay an extra $20 for those special features.
I bought these sets hoped the residue wouldn’t be there but it is such a shame I bet James Cameron would be disappointed after all the work done
Can you put the discs in micron sleeves and put them in the packaging?
I understand that this is a better version/transfer, and I’m thankful they put forth some effort, but a rough average bitrate of 53mbps seems very low for a film that’s supposedly “cutting edge technology in filmmaking”. Seems very oxymoronic to say the least. I’m not personally a fan of the Avatar movies, they are Fern-gully on steroids to me lol. Fern-gully is a great story for a cartoon but it’s such an over used trope in Hollywood, more so than any other trope. But that’s just me. Great review nonetheless. Appreciate you.

Absolute rubbish re the residue, just got mine here in The UK. Played the 4k disc all the way through ,no issues.
I love these videos. They really need to be releasing the best version on 4k the first time, I feel bad for anyone who bought these inferior versions when they first were released.

Yup, they VERY MUCH SO botched the launch of these. Stores don't have them, online didn't have them, etc
@3rd-Wave_Rebel Yeah I ordered the first movie along with the second and both won't be delivered until the 23rd. You'd have thought they'd have all the logistical stuff down to a science by now.
So I just got my 4K collector's edition for Avatar and jesus fucking christ are those sleeves tight. Legit got a scratch on the bottom of disc 1 while trying to get it out.
Might have to do an exchange and then cut the fucking paper off the sleeves next time to get the discs out safely. Legit have to destroy the packaging to keep the discs safe, what the fuck has physical media come to?

In regard to bitrates -- I know people place high importance on them when they're higher -- but David Mackenzie (main encoder for Fidelity in Motion, and maybe the best all around video encoder for physical media all together) has mentioned on more than one occasion that higher bitrates do not always equate to better image compression. He broke it down scientifically, so it went over my head for the most part -- but the simplest way he put it is how you distribute the bitrate throughout. What he basically said is that a studio like Disney, who always get hated on on forums for doing BD-66s for long films (Avengers: Endgame) they still do an exceptional job image quality wise with their releases. In fact, audio complaints aside for their releases when it comes to Atmos mixes, their video encodes do rank among some of the best the format has to offer.
So an average bitrate of 50-55-mbps is still well enough on a BD-100 for different cuts of a film of this length. I can't wait to see how both films look and compare to their original 4K releases when I finally get my hands on them.
Well…got both sets today. Took 20 mins to remove the discs they were awkwardly stuck so tight. Every single disc is scratched.
No kidding, I'm starting to see why this was seemingly an online only release (literally no store was carrying these besides "order for shipping" near me)
How'd you get the discs out? I only got one out and it's gotta be the worst looking disc out of my collection now, in 25 years of collecting. I kinda want suggestions before I just say fuck it and cut one of the sides on each sleeve to remove the rest safely, cause I'm never gonna return the discs to the sleeves, but I'd rather save the packaging too if I can.
@@Fuzzycatfur You probably managed to get the discs out by now. I used a microfiber to get some leverage once I was able to slide the disc out to get a grip on it. I had to use a ton of force to force it up and out that small amount. Quite ridiculous..not looking forward to the replacements as they’ll likely be just as scratched and hard to remove. I’ll probably need to contact Disney directly.
@SFMarine0311 I haven't even tried to get the other discs out yet, I still need to find the time to make sure everything on that first discs works before I even try. Thank you for the suggestion though
@SFMarine0311 I will ask though, if you do go though disney directly, let me know how to? I'm new to that given that idk, I went my whole life with companies just knowing how to make proper packaging for home media until now?
@SFMarine0311 Well, i bought a fresh microfiber cloth (via a eyeglasses cleaning kit) and used it to grip and yank them out without getting fingerprints of scratches on the rest of them, time to vet all 8 discs. This is gonna be a long week. Gotta watch Avatar 6 times in a row, before I even get started with any commentaries. I'm sure I will be clinically insane by the time I'm done. Haha
Hope you get better soon, I also just want to say I already bought the new Avatar movies, via their steel book collectible editions… but now I will be kinda excited to give them a watch, somewhere here within the next week or so…. This comes after I already bought the first editions of the avatar… one in steel book, the other in the regular blue ray case…

That damn packaging... If theyre gonna do sleeving then you would think that these companies would at least put some type of scratch-free felt or something inside the lining

They are trying reduce the amount of plastic, that is why they put the disc in paper sleeves. I think they could but a double deeper slot so you can take the disc out from the center hole.
I know of a lot of folks who got the jibby jabbys that are suffering quite a bit from flus/colds this year already. No jibby jabbys seem to be doing better. Strange.
