Great news about the new Terminators. I must have the set once they come out.
James, thank you for explaining Dolby Vision. I never realized (until recently) that I didn't have a Dolby Vision capable player, frankly I didn't know much about it. I have the one step lower Panasonic 4K UHD player in the UB-420, which has HDR 10 and HDR 10+. The UB820 is about twice as expensive, but if I upgrade I'll try to remember to use your link. I really appreciate all the information you provide.
Please give us some more inside information if they're going to redo Pirates of the Caribbean 1to4 I thought the fifth one was pretty good. Thanks for all the great info.

@InSearchofPhysicalMedia did you do the comparsion to the Apple Itunes digital version? as it does have higher bitrate then the other streamers. there was no banding or blocking.

2 thumbs up on this video and I fully agree with James' comment about the Panasonic UB820. This is an awesome 4K player. Previously I had the Sony 800M2. I switched to the Panasonic. I was amazed at the improvements. Startling better picture and better audio, plus discs that would freeze on the Sony ran perfectly every time on the Panasonic.
I was surprised at the better audio quality too when I upgraded !
Good recommendations here, I'm looking into investing in a 4k player so I will give the Panasonic a try. Thank you!

James when you watch both versions of the movie The Abyss on 4K or Blu-Ray on a modern TV. Are there black bars at the top and bottom of the screen? Or does the picture cover the whole screen?

How does the movies anywhere image quality compare to competitors like itunes and amazon?
Have you seen that vinyl cleaner that you put in top down and it spins the record and cleans it I think with UV rays - need something smaller like that for our 4Ks
Have one since 3 years use it may be once. Its time consuming. Plus just to wet middle of vinyl.
4:00 I give all my digital codes to my parents to watch/stream on their imac.
I dont even bother to watch them when I have the 4k disc

Great news T2 redo, T1 in 4K. Watch my movies on 120” screen with JVC4k projector which has excellent HDR tone mapping. JVC national rep told not to use Panasonic player tone mapping since JVC is better. Thanks for your research into new restoration projects. Watching True Lies tonite.

Pleased that the BD discs are region free as we, in the UK, have had to import The Abyss due to BBFC rulings.
I have the Panasonic UMP9000 which is just brilliant. I had the 820 which was visually a very good machine.
That player is amazing. I used to use the Xbox SX, but it is like going from HD to 4k using the 820 instead.
Looks like all 3 of the films are out of stock on Amazon, so hopefully this bodes well for this venture of finally giving successful but overlooked action movies of yesteryear a shot on 4K.

I just ordered The Abyss (never owned) and True Lies (have on DVD). at this point I'm not ready to replace my alien collection Blu-rays...I still need the last two movies, though.
You don’t have to, only the first two are available in 4k uhd. The first one by Ridley Scott has the same 5.1 dts ma audio from the blu ray, no upgrade, if that’s important to you
@@darealestwon For one thing, the 4 Alien Blu-rays I have now are in a nice skinny package, I don't need to always replace everything that works for a better picture or sound (I'd go broke), and I recently bought some nice 12 AWG cables for my front 3 speakers to replace the mis-matched Monster-and-generic speaker wire that I had, plus an E.T. 4K, which I only had on DVD....gotta start saving some money instead of spending it.
I'm hoping for a James Cameron 4k Collection Boxset.

I have the Panasonic UB900 on my LG G1, great video, and I'm glad a proper 4k re release for Terminator 2 Judgment Day is coming out, now I hope we get the 1st movie in 4K also. I'm in the United Kingdom, thankfully someone there is getting me the 3 movies on 4K along with other Blu-Rays using Disney movie club before they shut down, can't wait to get them

I always appreciate your thoroughness in your reviews. I agree that the extended editions are better especially The Abyss. I feel like the theatrical version of The Abyss is missing the whole point of the story. I also think these are 3 out of 4 of Cameron’s best movies. Terminator 2 is the other. The original Terminator is a very, very close 5th. I always agree about physical being better and every way. I have had many digital versions change and disappear altogether.
Aliens 4k shows out of stock for me using your link ..but that maybe because I'm in the UK?
Excited to hear about the new T2 restoration. And it's a given I'll be getting all 3 of these. Question, would you consider doing a 4k player comparison to show the differences. I personally have a region free UB420. is that comparison even possible?

the thing is, even if the AI restoration is getting better and better and can do some great work, I would still rather see an actual 4K scan of the original camera negatives whenever possible. But yeah, the AI being able to open up more possibilities of more releases is still a very good thing.
Was going to a screening of The Abyss (Avgrunden) at my local cinema but then a realized it was a new movie with the same name. So I guess I need to wait for the disks to get released here.
I also use the Panasonic ub 820. As a home theater enthusiast, a dedicated player that does dolbyvision is a must. Plus it has great tone mapping features. I have a ps5 and a series X , but they are vastly inferior 4k blu ray players and don’t support Dolby vision. If you have a projector you can get away with the ub 420 that doesn’t support Dolby vision, as you won’t need it for most projectors

The xbox definitely supports Dolby vision
@@HonkeyKong54 it supports it only on streaming, not disc playback. Don’t know if you knew that. That’s a big reason why I got a Dolby vision enabled stand alone player. I thought the X box one X would support it, but it did only for streaming. Same thing with the series X

The rat scene in Abyss is great foreshadowing. Taking it out would ruin the narrative.
I really wish they'd just get Arrow Video to handle all transfers. They would look immaculate with the grain and encoding.

Thank you for these reviews! I've pre-ordered all three movies on 4K disc. I'm very glad to hear that Aliens still has the film grain. Could it be that Cameron originally filmed his movies using film with finer film grain that's harder to pick up when scanning for the transfers? I was always skeptical of all the Cameron/AI upscale/DNR comments. Never any sources being cited. Comments repeated too often to believe it. Now I'm really looking forward to my copies! 😄
The Terminator is my personal favorite James Cameron film, I watch it at least once a month. That upcoming 4K is going to be lit!!! Unfortunately my copy of True Lies has been delayed to late March, even though I pre-ordered right away

I know you mentioned how the Aliens one is basically Aliens 2.0 in that it won't look or feel the same due to the AI restoration process. Compared to other films that have gotten a 4K release from the same time period of these, would you say that look wise they look like they came from that time period, or that due to the new AI restoration process Cameron used it feels weird/different to other films of that time period?
For me I like to have the films look like they came from the time period they originally were released in, and I guess my big concern is these won't look or feel like 80's/90's films anymore due to this method he used to restore them trying to make them look more modern and clean. I hope that made sense and if you have a moment, I would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks again for all your hard work, I really appreciate all the time and effort you put into these reviews.
The Panasonic UB820 is a fantastic player. But I’ve spent way too much money on my PLEX Server to justify a UB820 for myself. So I play all my full quality MKV movie files with an NVidia Shield TV Pro and get everything the disc has to offer as well, equal to the UB820. And man these movies look great on my Sony A95K QDOLED. So glad to have these on 4K now, even with the few discrepancies you mentioned. Thanks again James 😎👍.

@@darealestwon I don’t know why but my responses to you aren’t being posted. Anyway just look up the website for the program I mentioned and it has all the explanations you need to set things up. And you can start out with a laptop or miniPC. It’s not hard at all.
Just Google PLEX and they have full instructions on setup. You can use a laptop to start out. It’s easy.
Must agree with you panasonic 820 is best Blu Ray player I've had it for a year it plays everything perfect 👌 even better than the sony which I never bought panasonic is way to go I got it on sale for 350 awesome price
Very excited to hear T1 and T2 were coming out on 4k.
I watched an hour+ long video earlier of a guy going on and on about how these were bad, and was actively boycotting these releases(!). Like, how are you going to talk smack about these without watching these first? And including some screen shots would’ve been nice, even if he had to borrow them from other people. He’s like the film equivalent of the people who post on a certain so-called “mastering engineer”’s music forum page.
Meanwhile, you’re putting in tons of work to put these images out there, sometimes while dealing with health issues. I think it’s safe to say that I’m going to take your opinion over his.
🤦♂️Sadly there’s a LOT of nonsensical people who make random very uninformed & unqualified reviews with no actual data or testing, along with🤨NO🚫 actual FACTS, but yet they still constantly spew negativity, gloom & doom about the downfall & end of physical media!!🙄
Especially only idiots will ever pass judgement without ever having seen in person the physical 4K💿 discs & transfers‼️LOL!!🤪 REAL CLOWNS!!🤡

Isn't it pathetic that you have to clean brand new 4K discs? I feel like I'm back in the 80s having to blow out game cartridges to get them to play. In all seriousness, I have noticed that the Panasonic players are much more sensitive to fingerprints/residue than the others, but they still outperform the others in just about every other category.

Blu-Ray discs are much more durable than 4K Blu-Rays when it comes to freezing and skipping
My Star Trek collection was a complete mess. They did release a lot of discs, but by the time I look at it to find out they were defective it was too late
I agree 100% with your views on censorship and owning physical media 👍I much prefer the theatrical version of Aliens myself but I'm probably in the minority on that, it's great to have a choice so that everyone is happy ! For the Abyss though, I agree, extended version all the way ! Thanks for the video ! 🙂👍
I think it's odd when the digital version sounds significantly worse than the UHD Blue Ray, but it does happen. The digital version of the Fugitibe and The Abyss does not suffer from that though, it least sound wise. They both sound pritty big even in digital. I would say the only movies I strictly wach on UHD Blue Ray, are DTSX mixes, The Thing, Independence day, Jurassic Parck, Howard The Duck, exmachina and 8 Mile. It's a shame an atmos alternative is not available for thoughs, and I also noticed certain older movies with new atmos mixes are not offered on digital as well. The OG Childs Play movies were definitely a huge sound upgrade as well as the classic Halloween movies wich Scream Factory also gave new atmos mixes to.
Theatrical for me. I like that when we arrive, we are experiencing the place for the first time as the characters are.

If anybody reading this is having UHD disc video noise glitches or skipping with their Panasonic UB820 player and it’s NOT the disc’s fault, it’s worth considering cleaning the laser lens with isopropyl alcohol and microfiber cloth. I posted more detailed info elsewhere on YT via comments section. This saved me from buying a new player after trying tons of troubleshooting ( 3+ year old unit )
I ordered The Abyss from Target last week and should be here by Thursday. Probably going to buy True Lies and then Aliens, one at a time. Btw i use the Sony-UBP-X700 and haven't had but good luck with that other than disconnecting with the Wi-Fi once in awhile. Good review..

? There is no cgi in terminator one it didn't exist. Do you mean the stop motion animation.
@jreal5 yes the super imposed stop motion looks dated. I wouldn't mind them "remastering" just that 1 scene of the T-800 walking towards the factory door.
@@AX5Terminator there's is a guy on youtube that re did all that scene and it actually look really damn good. Search terminator 1 remade on youtube to see what the movie would look like

I get the feeling that these restorations are heading tied the life a theatrical who premium channel used to do that is be exclusive to a streaming service for 6 months to a year before getting a physical release
Great work James, delighted to hear about T2 being redone and T1 coming as well hopefully this year, I think this is 40th anniversary T1.
The digital version on Vudu looks great. I guess not all streaming presentations are equal. I wasn't happy with the the True Lies image but you can see pores in close ups and some fine detail.
This is why I only use my digital library so my family can “borrow” a movie from me by loving into my account

I have seen your videos all over Facebook. You make people want to buy physical. PS5 I heard is better then the Xbox for discs but I agree nothing beats the 820
If you don’t get the 820 at least get a player that supports dolbyvision, unless you use a projector or a Samsung tv

James I do agree 👍 James Cameron needs yo actually redo t2 I did not buy it I just recently bought t2 on Blu Ray non 4k has both versions hopefully new 4k reservation will be done I always use your Amazon links but they dropped the ball on aliens and the abyss only showing order received it all over reddit so people are ordering from Walmart website and getting them Amazon probably didn't expect high demand for those titles hopefully Amazon fixes this...
Not complaining but Cameron did use a bit of DNR. The original release was very grainy and this release is clearly not as grainy. He’s been known to be unhappy with the film’s grain as far back as the Laserdisc, where he applied an early form of DNR. I’d be really interested in hearing about how this release was made, how the AI was used, and how much DNR was applied. Did he completely DNR and then use AI to add some grain back? Nevertheless I’m excited for this and will definitely buy it.

Awesome follow up! Thank you for answering my question about the Aliens digital version comparison. I thought I was the only one who was interested, but glad I wasn't. Now that I can see there is a difference. It's an excuse to go back and watch it again properly. I would hope it would finally silence those who clearly judged the Digital version only and crapped all over it.
I wish I still had my dolby Atmos set up. Moving from a home with a Home theater to an Apartment I retired the surround system a few years back. There hasn't been really any good movies lately to justify setting it up. Although, I may be tempted to set it up again just to hear Aliens the way it's meant to be heard. I see an eviction notice coming soon!!

That's why I don't watch movies on stream. They look awful.
I have the 4k steelbook of terminator 2 and i still haven't even opened it to watch it because of the bad reviews of the waxy look it has. So knowing we are getting the first film in 4k and the 2nd film all being done in 4k with a new transfer to them i will buy them but i still wont be opening my crap 4k version probably end up in the trash where trash belongs.
The rat didn’t drown. So it’s a non issue. I went out of my way and bought Knight Rider from Turbine for the overall quality yes, but also and especially for the unedited, original episodes. I’m a Christian and think some things in movies are unnecessary such as excessive vulgarity and sex scenes, but I hate and abhor politically and socially motivated editing as well.
Info about the Terminator movies just gave me a b*ner 😆😂

Nice video on explaining digital vs physical 4k. There was lots and still is arguments about the films actual quality.
Unfortunately my Amazon orders have been delayed and I pre-ordered day one. Glad to hear Terminator and Terminator 2 are being worked on.
These versions should be compared to older blu ray or even dvd versions.
There really is no comparison, but I do believe his dedicated video review of Aliens does compare to the BD. 👍🏻

I dont use any BluRay players when watching on TV. For me its enough having external HDD with a lot of space.
Im sure that image quality is no difference.
The BBFC are stupid at times, In my personal opinion it should be abolished, because as a massive film fan myself I like to watch films censorship free. So importing is def the way to go. I will import the abyss but atm il wait until all the madness calms down and then buy it. As I'm from the uk myself aliens dosent get released until end of April so il happy wait for that. I'm not bothered about true lies, yeah it's a good film but for me not one of watxh multiple times over and over again, so il bu it when it comes down to a cheap price.

Are folks still complaining about film grain? It appears in older films, that appeared in theaters, on screens the size of small buildings, because that was the technology at the time. We are now watching physical media, in our homes, on smaller screens. Reducing the--distracting--grain is designed to improve the experience. And, the technology has improved. If folks want grain, then just watch an older format: VHS, LD, DVD, Blu-Ray. Problem solved.
I couldn’t agree with you more! The technology has advanced. It’s a lot of the older people who feel nostalgic about film grain because it reminds them of the good time in their life when they enjoyed movies, they want to replicate the experience , not improve upon it.
It’s not really about that, it’s that when you remove the grain, you remove the detail. For example, Peter Jackson removed the grain from LotR and everyone looks like they’re made out of wax. There are no fine details, such as skin pores or clothing textures. The whole point of 4K is to see more detail in the movie. So if you’re removing that detail, what’s the point of even releasing it in 4K?

I have so much mid-century era animation with warnings on the packaging about potentially offensive stereotypes. I’ll take the warnings all day, as long as the content stays true to its origins.

I really want to say how much I admire the tremendous effort you’ve put into the review of these Cameron movies. This is not a task to take on lightly.
I also want to say that, as a UK based collector, I fully agree with your view on censorship. As I recall, the rat scene was in the original cinema release, then removed for the early home entertainment version and only reappeared when the extended cut became available and attitudes became more relaxed. I have the US laserdisc release complete with rat.
Since leaving the EU, I feel we are starting to see an increasing retrograde move to a more controlled society …. But that rant doesn’t belong on your channel 🤐
Ps: having seen Dune Part 2 at the IMAX this week, I am really looking forward to that becoming available on the 4k format 😛
