I think they might Double Dip like how LOTR did where they released a non extended version then months later they did with all the bonus features.
@@aarongregg9699 JC didnt approve the T2 Special edition as a 4K. We ended up with the Theatrical. Same with Avatar. I'm not hopeful but things could change
Seen review about halo effects in the mixed live action/CGI scenes that is appearing when upscaling, did you notice that?
@@bossebern2860 i didn't notice but i was also just enjoying the movie
@@aarongregg9699 Thx because it would ruin it
So happy to see Disney finally pulling their heads out on 4k discs. Even though James Cameron was the main reason, still. Disney needs to stop being the enemy to collectors.
More people should cancel Disney stream subscribtion.
@@stevemuzak8526 no. That is just a dumb statement. Its Not Even 14$ a year if you share it. Streaming AND physical Media is important. Nobody says only one is the way.
Nobody cant buy every movie/Series on 4K.
I got Paramount+, Disney+, Apple TV, Netflix, Prime Video, RTL+ (German one) and I pay less 15€ / 17$ for ALL of them combined. Thats Not even the price for one 4K Disc. But I have a 200 4K BluRay collection for selected movies.
Why the fuck cant people get the best of both worlds?
Hopefully aliens soon.
Exactly! If you have a company that owns their own streaming service, you will generally get screwed when it comes to physical media.
@@Optora.alright you gotta share your secret of how to do that
It's so frustrating that Disney isn't doing Dolby Vision or HDR10+ on discs. I think it's a tactic to get people to subscribe to Disney plus.
Defitnely not a tactic. Your average consumer doesn’t give a damn and or know about Dolby Vision/HDR10+. Maybe .001 percent of people subscribe to Disney + for Dolby Vision.
@@MV7Snipe but people that buy 4k discs are very likely to know
People that subscribe most don't have a home theather setup or juat don't care that much.
They see the streaming movie has dolby vision so its probably a bit better than a streaming show without dolby vision.
But there's no comparison to a disc (even with just hdr)
@@MV7Snipethat's true that the majority of consumers aren't cinemaphiles and therefore aren't self educated. But, it doesn't change the fact that Disney intentionally implements Dolby vision only Disney plus to pull more revenue.
it's not that big of a deal
I guess the real question is wether Disney would ever put out the extended version with the alternate opening on 4K at some point. I own the blu-ray set, and love the extended version. Decisions, decisions.
What extended version ? is there another version kicking around?
@@iloveblue7920yeah the first film on Blu Ray has an extended version with an alternate opening
did you see the re release? that's a different cut
@@iloveblue7920 The extended version on the collector's Avatar Blu-ray is definitely the best version to watch.
There are 4 different versions/cuts, at least!
The fact the Extended Edition (which is THE version to watch) didn't get the 4K upgrade is REALLY disappointing. Guess I'll pass on this one.
Next year they can release extended editions for avatar 1 and 2
Yeah I really don’t get it. It doesn’t even seem like exclusively a Disney problem, because James Cameron already has a bad history with 4K. It just seems like he upgraded the theatrical and called it a day and Disney went “well whenever he finishes that other cut, we can sell it again so fine by us!”
They keep doing this with movies and only remaster the theatrical cut
@@mg6945"Yeah I really don't get it."
Haha, you do...
@@chrisjfox8715 yeah that’s true it’s money
the biggest issue with this release is it doesn't include the extended special edition which imo is the best version of the film
Theatrical version is the best version. It was the one nominated for all the Academy Awards. It's the definitive version. The special edition and extended versions are there for the fans. They're good too but the scenes are not necessary.
@@dvforever the theatrical version is amazing but I really do feel like the extra scenes make it even better
@@Kid15X I hate the death of Tsu Tey scene. It's so cliche and so forced and fake. He gets shot and falls slowly to his death. Poetic and subtle in the theatrical. In the special edition he's on the ground in pain and Jake Sully has to kill him. Such an unnecessary scene and takes away from the emotional climax that focused on Jake and Neytiri. Cameron was correct in taking it out. The audience has seen this kind of death scene in dozens of films where the hero has to do a mercy kill for his friend and former rival. It's extremely cliched.
@@dvforever I mean the whole story of Avatar is pretty cliche, there are lots of scenes in the theatrical version that "audiences have seen before" but I really didn't feel like it took anything away from the climax, I actually really liked that they gave his death some more attention
@@Kid15X That's fine. Yes, most of Avatar is cliche. What's one more cliche? But from my perspective, it's nice to have one less cliche!
When I watched the Theatrical version in the theater for the 1st time, I was actually surprised they didn't give Tsu Tey's death any attention. I was impressed with the basic tragedy of it.
When the Special Edition version came out, I was not surprised that they filmed this scene and I cringed as I was watched it. But to each his own. I don't think it ruins the ending or anything. It just didn't work for me and it didn't work for Cameron. His instincts were right to cut it.
If you haven't seen Avatar in 3D, then you haven't seen Avatar in it's true intended experience. Back in 2009-2010 it was a staggering, immersive experience! I saw it again in 3D when it was re-released in 2022 and it was still phenomenal.
Avatar is about the only movie worth 3D. All the projectors are ditching 3D is it really worth it for one good 3D movie ?
WOW 😲
I agree when I saw Avatar 2 in 3D in the theatre it was amazing 😁
Im not gonna lie, I’ve seen both in 3D and it looks like shit… idk if my seats were bad but it looked bad
@@Ssoulseek1 Your seats? Were you in the corner somewhere? You claim the 3D was shit. Can you name any 3D movie where the 3D was good? Maybe you don't like 3D or you're talking nonsense.
Still have the blu ray and honestly it holds up
Not as good as 4k HDR
@Steve Muzak yea I'm sure it's not i liked the movie but not sure if it's worth at full price . I've seen it so Many times now honestly
@jms_hometheatre37 yea going to wait for a sale on it or maybe if they release a steel book 4k version
@@stevemuzak8526t's upscaled to 4K without Dolby Vision not a huge upgrade.
Yeah, I'm sticking with my Blu-Ray and extended cut. I know the 4K HDR is an upgrade but I don't love the movie enough to double dip and i prefer the extended cut and full bonus features so will be passing on the Disney release - I agree with Jeff, it aint an "Ultimate Collector's Edition'.
I really think 3D tv's should get a comeback. Passive 3D back in the days looked really cool yeah it had some problems. But nowadays there have been so much improvements with 3D technology. I really woud love to relive Avatar the same as I did in the Cinema!
Most of today’s consumer projectors support 3D. And I think the original 3D Blu-ray is still available. The 4K format doesn’t support 3D.
Just get an ultra short throw projector that does 3D. With a UST projector (some times they're called Laser TVs), you don't have to run wires all the way to a projector behind you.
3d is a stupid gimmick. It doesn't work. IRL, whatever you focus on is what's not blurry. If you want to look around a scene in a movie, focus doesn't change. The focus is forced to one thing. It just doesn't work.
I think Apple Vision Pro will make 3D movies at home a thing again. Maybe not in the way we’d like but it should help bring momentum back to the medium.
I've never been a fan of 3D, in theaters or at home. Gives me a headache every time. It's also terrible for your eyes, I believe. But you do you, man.
The 3D is the best way to watch this. James Cameron has helped us consumers by making the 3D full frame (no black bars top and bottom) and increasing the bit rate by spreading the 3D over 2 discs instead of one plus putting the extras on a stand-alone disc. Superb.
It's gutting 3D TV's died off, Avatar was special in 3D
Fantastic review. The only thing that would make it even better is if you could add a 3 second countdown in the corner when you do the image comparisons between 1080p and 4K. Besides that: superb job.
Thank you so much for going in-depth!
*Any idea about these 4K releases* ?
1. Tron: Legacy (2010)
2. Prince of Persia (2010)
3. Titanic (1997)
4. Paycheck (2003)
5. Deep Blue Sea (1999)
6. Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008)
7. xXx (2002)
8. National Treasure Film Series
9. Deja Vu (2006)
10. Race to Witch Mountain (2009)
11. 17 Again (2009)
12. The Mask (1994)
Titanic should come to 4K this year. Deep Blue Sea was rerelased in 4K to cinemas in Europe for a day from studiocanal. So I'd guess that will also come soon.
@@bened22
Thanks.
Se7en 4k please!!!!!
Hoping they won’t mess up Tron Legacy release (if they decided)
Hopefully never... or at least some time well after all of the good movies are already on 4K.
About Extended Version. James Cameron said that his Theatrical Cut is final vison. Extended version is just a bonus for fans.
Jeff, I've been looking forward to this review and analysis since they announced its release... good stuff man 👌. Keep up the great work!
The director prefers the theatrical cut. Maybe this is the reason, why they didn't include the other versions in this set. For me this is fine. I always want to see the version the director prefers.
This version was great on 4K
Can someone please answer why the 4K version, which people have been waiting years for, does not include the extended edition of the film?
Why do you think? So they can sell you another version for $45, in a year or two. Look at all the releases of something like The Godfather, for example... 99 different versions to buy, and each one is just a little better than the last (supposedly).
James Cameron. That's why.
I'm sad they didn't reissue the 3D Blu-ray with the new Atmos track
From everything I've heard, the Atmos track on this isnt anything special. I've heard its virtually indistinguishable from the standard 7.1 version.
Or Extended Cut and all 4K Ultra HD Blu ray discs of both movies in Dolby Vision they should have copy the Dolby Atmos track from 4K Ultra HD Blu ray to 3D and 1080p 2D discs.
The german 3d blu ray comes with an english atmos track
Still waiting for even a blu-ray release of True Lies
will definitely be picking this up on july 10th when it releases here in the UK. will also be keeping my collectors edition blu ray if i ever want to watch the extended cut
I think that's a good strategy.
Hi Jeff! Thanks for another honest review!
Thank you Jeff. 🙏🏻
Love your review!!! I'm very glad you pointed out the difference between the collectors edition versus the 4k.
Love the honest truth. Hopefully, people can find the collectors edition new or close to new.
But, it's great to have the 4k and collectors edition.
Because, if they did release the extended and special extended versions? They would be in blu-ray and not 4k.
Remember Terminator 2 4k? That's exactly what they did for the extended versions
I picked it up from Disney Movie Club, and it arrived a couple of days before the street date. I'm looking forward to the new special retrospect features. However, I really wish it included the special and extended editions. The longer versions have a subplot about Neteri's decreased sister, which adds a lot to her character.
Great review and coverage of the extras. We need a John Wick 4 4k review my friend!!
Thanks for bringing up the special features. I haven't seen anyone else make the comparison.
Thanks for the great info Jeff looks like this 4k release will be a good edition to have in addition to the 2 other 3D releases ( one with the lenticular cover which is rare) Love that Cameron spent the time on the Atmos audio and picture on this..Disney says whatever you want u got it..Hopefully that will be the case on future Cameron releases as well..Thanks Jeff.
Yeah, that sucks that it doesn't include the extended edition. It is very much superior to the theatrical cut and if more people watched that version, it might just change their minds about the film overall. At least for some. Looks like I'll be holding onto my blu-ray.
I actually don't like the extended version. the scene on earth are kinda goofy.
Cameron has said that the Theatrical cut is his preferred version. I find the extended scenes to be mostly superfluous and the pacing takes a hit in my opinion.
@phillipbanes5484 Well the problem is a lot of times these days, extended or director's cuts end up being much better than the theatrical version that was released. I think Avatar is one of them but there are many others, like ZS's JL. The theatrical version is widely panned and people were heavily petitioning for the Snyder cut to be released and it was. It was also the case with just about every other Snyder movie as well, like Sucker Punch, Watchmen and BvS. Then there's LOTR.
Of course it isn't the case with every movie but yeah in a perfect world, we would see in theaters what the definitive version ends up being. Unfortunately a lot of times it just isn't the case.
Hi Jeff. Can you let us know how Vudu down loads are compared to say Disney +? Since we purchased the disc and get a digital copy, is it the same quality as the disc or do we lose quality? I have alot of digital copies that came with the disc's. I was just wondering what your views are on this. I never heard you mention Vudu copies. Thanks. Love watching your reviews.
Rich.
stacked discs are a HUGE pet peeve of mine. a 3 disc flip tray can't be THAT much more expensive to make.
Hey, I'm glad you reviewed this new release. Would you rather buy a 1080p bluray or in 4k on a streaming platform. Which one is best? I don't have a 4k player yet because it's quite expensive and I can't buy a proper home theatre sound system. Plus I don't have the space and it would disturb my neighbors. I only have an HDR10 tv and a stereo sound system. Do you think I would still see and hear a difference if I upgrade my blu-ray player? Greetings from Belgium
Enjoyed the review but I was hoping you would also compare the reference 3D Blu-ray release.
What’s your tv/projector set up?
I have tried the extended blu ray on my 4K player and 4k projector using the upscale option and it looks fine.
Thanks for your awesome content Jeff you are amazing
Why is it 17 minutes shorter than the extended collectors 1080p Blu-Ray version. This should have been the definitive final version of the first Avatar movie
It's like that so James Cameron can force us to double dip.
Will be picking this one up just got that A2 steel book this week.
Great review Sir. I pulled the trigger on the 4K so I'm looking forward to adding this to my collection, but I'm going to be holding on to my Extended Blu Ray copy as well (at least until they release the Super-Dee-Duper Ultimate 4K Edition with both versions on it).
I'd love to hear your thoughts on the 4K once you watch it!
I love this movie. The depth in this 4K HDR version is as mind blowing as seeing it for the first time. I get the sense that this was how it was originally intended to be presented, as others have mentioned about the 3D version. Makes me want to see the 3D version now. You can't fault them for leaving room to release yet another version in the future.
If you like a oversharpened and waxy faces then yes great "4K" disk for that
@@ughugh351 I was referring more to the scenery. But curious how you can be so sure that aliens are not being accurately represented as being sharpened and waxy?
Another contender for worst example of not really "Ultimate Collector's Edition" Is the Middle Earth box set which includes NONE of the appendices
My most anticipated release is True Lies. Can’t wait.
We need commando too lol
Anything with Jamie Lee Curtis is totally unwatchable. It might as well be a yogurt commercial.
Thanks for the detailed review. I have the Blu ray collectors edition and with that in mind i don't think ill grab the 4k just yet.
Hdr physical disc is better than dolby vision on streaming. So do you think the DV on physical would be better than hdr physical? DV on physical discs look so good on the few i have.
I hate to say this but the only way to truly experience this movie is in all it's beauty and grandeur in the way it was meant to be seen is on 3D Blu-Ray. 3D trumps 4K on Avatar IMHO!
Looking forward to buying both 4K’s Tuesday!
Avatar is designed for 3D. The best way to view Avatar at home is still the 2009 reference 3D blu-ray, which is one of the best blu-rays ever!
I personally picked up a copy of the 2012 run of the 3D version just because I like the cover art for that later release more.
Hey Jeff, I’d like to know how your slipcovers are always so perfectly crisp with no dents or damages? They get shipped to you that way? I go all over town trying to find a perfect condition copy of every movie I buy and still can’t find them that nice most of the time. How are your movies packaged and who ships to you is something I’ve always wondered? All Amazon does for me is send me smashed and damaged movies, they are not even an option for me anymore.
Have you heard anything about the other Cameron films; The Abyss, True Lies and Titanic?
And Aliens?
And uncut? 😂
@@simonfilmfan4899 How about both versions. Let the viewer decide. That's what should have happened with Avatar.
Does the regular blu-ray disc in the new set contain the remastered version on the old transfer?
Bro please try to talk about Aspect Ratio and do comparisons between them and also try to include what the IMAX Apsect Ratio had and whats the 4K BluRay / BluRay Has/Had please huge request
Are the imax scenes in the 4k disc?
Preaching for physical
Gave me goosebumps
Thank you
You were comparing the 4k disc vs Disney+. But did you see any differences between the Movies Anywhere version vs Disney+?
Hi there … u talk about great sound with Dolby atmos , but do u know what the best headset experience is if I see it with that ?? I’m now using Xbox one headphones with integrated Dolby Atmos.. but I know PlayStation also has some great headphones not with Dolby but 3D audio.. u tried that ? What’s best ?🎧
Jeff does this new 4k scan have a different aspect ratio to the original Blu-ray? The screen shots looked different in size in the comparisons
No that was just poor cropping on my part I guess.
soo we going to revisit this when the apple vision pro comes out apparently they showed that in 3d on the headset
I'm planning on buying Avatar 1 & 2 on 4k Steelbook for the 2nd as well the 3D for Way Of Water next week Tuesday 👊👊📽
Does the new BD version in 1080p thats says "newly remastered" have the extended version or is it theatrical version as well? I was so waiting for Avatar in 4k that I passed the BD version and learning now that 4k is only theatrical is a massive dissapointment.
How is the Dolby Atmos sound?
Disc 2 is the original bluray or 4k remaster 1080p?
Seen review about halo effects in the mixed live action/CGI scenes that is appearing when upscaling, did you notice that?
is it the extended cut so i can still keep my bluray
I'm so happy to hear it's a great transfer
Do we have any updates on Titanic 4K release??
I have to get the new 3D Bluray for this. I thought about 4K but I still use the 3D TV in my bedroom.
Is there no extended edition for avatar in 4K?
The 4K disc not including the extended version of the movie might be a deal breaker. Let me guess, they're going to release a 4K Extension Ultimate Collector's Edition in December to get people to double dip.
More likely 2025 before Avatar: The Seed Bearer releases.
Love you soo much Jeffery
Another great review! Does anyone know if Disney will produce a combined 4k release, opposed to having to purchase two separate discs?
You mean combined both movies?
I have been hearing disney + has been changing atmos to static and cutting height channels down to 4 speakers when streaming. I hope this disc is different
Hey Jeff, why don't you swap the amery case for one with an extra tray?
I'm watching and didn't know the UHD of Avatar has been released (WHY NO THE ABYSS, JC!!!). Your commentary is always awesome so I continue and then at 13:05 I see what reminds me of what I bought years ago. YUP! That's what I have!
I wish that he would work on getting The Abyss out on 4K.
Sorry, mate. I love Avatar.
And this whole Pocahontas thing is silly criticism. Every movie has a screenplay based on a formula that's similar to a thousand other movies.
e.g: Air Force One is Die Hard in the skies, Joker steals from Taxi Driver and King of Comedy, etc.
Yet people attack only Avatar using the Pocahontas thing as if every movie they admire is ground breakingly original. I think it's just that cinephiles are slightly snobbish and they don't want to be seen admiring a simple story watched by the masses. They have no problem telling the world about some B movie guilty pleasure they have but admitting that Avatar is good seems a stretch because they might be judged as shallow by snobs who jerk off to Goodfellas, which is just another gangster movie that is dull whenever Joe Pesci is NOT on screen. (Come at me, snobs.)
You had me in complete agreement until you disparaged Good Fellas. I'm into Avatar and Good Fellas but not The Lord of the Rings. I could take or leave Harry Potter, too but have no issue with people who like TLOTR or The Hobbit movies but I am getting a little sick of the hate towards Avatar.
@@frommatorav1 To be honest, the Goodfellas bit is to provoke ciniphile snobs.
Avatar is boring and childish.
They needed to put the full 3 hours on the the 4k disc like they have it on Max and on Disney and they also fell short on Zach Snyder's Justice League too!!!
im definetly picking this up!
Hey, are you doing a 3D review as well?
There is variable frame rate, it's done on gemini man bro! On the blu-ray or digital release can't remember but it's on the usual suspect sites lol I have it!
Have they upgraded the 3d version
The extended version of that movie is not good IMO, but I feel like they should've just thrown every special feature on there.
Can't wait to pick these up Tuesday. 🙏🏻
What’s with studios not remastering directors cuts?
Another great review.
Is the 4K release high-framerate (HFR)? The first Avatar movie wasn't variable framerate, it was HFR with a fixed framerate, which UHD can do (see Gemini Man for an example).
They were digitally converted to partial 48 fps for the theatrical version, but 4k Blu-ray and 4k in general has no specification for 48 fps support. The specs do call for 30, 50, and 60, besides 24 and 25. These are both in 24 fps.
Could you do a guide on 4K players?
Does the 4k collection edition have the extended version also ?
No just the regular blu-ray collectors edition does unfortunately
But where/how can I see the IMAX format at home?
I guess I'll hold off on getting the 4K because I have that blu-ray set
No one noticed the slight change made at the end of the movie? In the older versions, Giovanni Ribisi's character just looks at Jake and he uses his head to indicate he needs to move on to the shuttle. In the one I just saw on Disney Plus, he now comes up and says "this isn't over, you know that, right?" Not sure if it was a cut scene or created because of the sequel.
Is there a Steelbook?
This is the best of the best
Check out the 4 disk collector's edition
Hi Jeff! You said in your review of Avatar 4k that it is one excellent release but not one of the top 10. I was wondering which 4k discs do you consider in your top 10 for both the image and the sound. Thanks for answering.
This disc is currently hovering in my top ten for the year. It looked great!
Glad I ordered it in 4K and the sequel the way of water and i hope that titanic gets released in 4K soon and other classic James Cameron movies
Is there much of a difference between atmos on hbo max and physical media atmos? As well as the picture quality
When it comes to the audio, it's uncompressed lossless on the physical media meanwhile it's compressed lossy on ths WEB release
@@jasdeepsa9502 do you notice a diff personally to warrant buying the disc for most movies?
How did you get a copy so early??? It's not even released yet?? It's out on June 20th.
Does it skip or freeze?
I picked up the Avatar 2 & John Wick 4 Steelbooks
Can’t wait for the Avatar 2 review! 🤟
Me too! Just got my review for it up but I'm patiently waiting for Jeff's!
I need this asap I only have avatar on DVD
Sooo,
I just have to get the 4k and 1080p 3D Blu-ray, transfer both to a high-end computer, use AI/Machine Learning to compare both releases, use this data to create a custom 4k 3D video file and then the only thing that’s missing is a top-of-the-line high-resolution VR headset to enjoy Avatar in the best way possible at home - is that about it?
I was just wondering why they haven’t released a 4k version of this and why so long it’s still not Available on Apple TV in 4k Dolby atmos yet which is weird to me
