Having the extra disc region free is a bonus for us UK collectors. Thanks to the BBFC, we aren't getting our own release so have to import it. I was worried about the extras being hidden behind region coding but this has made me happy :D
Counting the days until my import arrives, I didn't know that the bonus features bluray was region-free too. I'm beyond excited.

Question for ya... I know you said grain is retained, that it looks very filmic. I love that!! You also mentioned disliking the digital release. My question lol.... so many folks reviewing the digital release said the grain was completely wiped away. Do you agree with that assessment (that grain was non-existent in the digital release)? I'm just trying to get a better sense of how much grain we're talking about on the disc... & whether it was maybe removed for digital & then added back for the disc? Hope that makes sense - thanks for the great video!

Thanks for the review. I preordered this one because I was optimistic about it. I think there was a lot of negativity going around because people felt burned by Terminator 2. Glad to hear the negative rumors are unfounded.
After reading/watching numerous 4K digital reviews, and everybody blaming Cameron for excessive DNR and waxy transfer, i'm very thankful you cleared up how you can't judge the physical release with the poor streaming version.
That's why it is very important to wait for a finished and released product and stay away from comments, hypes or criticism. Being intelligent and intellectual is getting information from reliable sources and professionals in a specific matter. You did well.
I think the terminator 2 4k was based on the previous 3d version and not the original negative.

I can't believe people were judging the 4K release based on the digital version; I had assumed they were talking about the physical release.
Always watch your reviews before buying. Glad this one is a home run. I'm wary of any JC release because of T2, quite honestly.

Thanks for clarifying all discs are region free. It's important information for me because I plan on giving the blu ray to my dad that doesn't have a 4k player. This is the only place I've seen that reliably gives this info!

Especially nice to learn since the BBFC forced the cancellation of this getting released in the UK since Cameron wouldn’t edit the rat oxygen breathing scene. It’s ridiculous we have to import it to get it in 4k!

O man, I'm so happy it's a good transfer. You can tell on the screenshots that the 4k blu ray looks way better. I mean, you can't see the highlights or the reflections on their faces on the digital version. I can't wait 2 watch this on my 77 inch oled and dolby atmos surround sound it's gonna be awesome.
I’ve never seen The Abyss and have been meaning to watch it for years but refused to watch it on DVD because I think it deserves to be seen in a good quality. Then it was announced the UK 4K release was cancelled because of some rat drowning scene or something and I’ve had to order it from the US. Looking forward to watching it though.

I also ordered the US version of Aliens because it got taken off of Amazon a few weeks ago without explanation(and was given a 31st of Dec release date) but now it’s back on for an April 22nd release but it looks like I might get it before the UK release date anyway if I stick with it and don’t get a refund. The one I’m most looking forward to is True Lies though because I’ve put off rewatching that for about 4 years hoping for a HD or 4K release and now it’s here I can’t tell you how excited I am.
I ordered this 4K version sight-unseen and watched it for the first time on Blu-ray. Mind blown! 😮
I'm so glad I waited for you in-depth reviews because I had a feeling all of the noise was just that...noise. There's never a great comparison when it's digital vs. physical and I'm glad you can verify that in this case it's true. Very curious to see how True Lies shakes out because apparently the digital version looks the worst of the 3 JC films coming out. But again, reserving judgement until I watch your review as a trust them completely. I did watch Aliens digital (as I already owned it and it got upgraded automatically) and thought that looked and sounded pretty good, so I can't imagine how awesome the disc will be. That was the one I felt confident in pre-ordering beforehand.

These James Cameron releases have a low average bitrate but look pretty good. If you really look you can see a the restoration was done digitally but the results aren't bad.

I will say I'm a little bummed that more studios don't take advantage of HDR10 +. Being free as opposed to studios having to pay the licensing fee for Dolby vision you would think that hdr10 Plus would have taken off a little more. Yes obviously I have a Samsung TV LOL. I guess it's a lot of work to do both hdr10 plus and Dolby vision on a movie?

Well something is amiss with T2 because the original DVD release was bad then the blu ray is not so good. T2 maybe is as good as it will ever get. It was a big film back when it was in theaters! Why would you mess up 3 different formats over the years. Maybe the original filming wasn’t so good because of budget. Who knows until James or the studio says something which Disney won’t. Disney has enough problems with all the bombs last year due to push back from movie goers about the wokeness issue which is killing this company.

Thank you for this review. I’ve read several reviews where there appears to be a degree of criticism, unwarranted in my opinion, about the image. It’s become my new reference disc which replaces Titanic in 4K, which is ironic given the much earlier Terminator 2 UHD I own.
Thank you for your honest feedback which I felt was right on the money. I’m also reminded, on a slightly differing note, of my cousin Dave, who is an eye surgeon. He once told me that no two eyes see the same thing identically. What could look one way to you could look different to another. Hence, I always try to make my own opinions when I watch things.

I might be more excited for the Atmos track from what you’re saying about it. It’s so rare to get a REALLY good Atmos track done right these days. It’s why I invested in the proper Atmos set up but so often it’s just not given a good workout.

Great news that this 4K was executed brilliantly, however I'm more concerned with the releases of True Lies & Aliens on 4K. Had faith in The Abyss 4K guven it was re-released in theatres prior to this home relaese and looked incredible.
I normally don't appreciate it when they mess with the cinematographer's original intentions, re: the photographic look of the film, however, It's nice that they found a way to remove the filter Mikael Salomon added to the film, for diffusion. Which in my opinion was always a bad choice, given the type of picture this is. I'm sure the film still has some soft focus in certain scenes, but I remember seeing this one in two different theaters a handful of times, and my eyes just couldn't focus on anything. When the pic went to Laserdisc (which I believe was '93) that filter was still somewhat prevalent. Not as muddy, but still an obvious issue. However, I've seen with certain scenes from the new master, that the filter has been removed. (*Although I'm not exactly sure how they did that, given it was likely baked into the film negative at time of shooting.) And these images you've provided are a great assist to evaluating that aspect of the scan. Can't wait to get the disc. Definitely one of my fav films. Thanks for your review.

Without watching the entire review, I wasn't expecting anything less than an overall good A/V 4K presentation. Aliens and True Lies will be the same. The Abyss was never released on Blu-ray individually. Regardless of how many calibrated 4K TVs he reviewed on (which was entirely extreme), buying The Abyss in 4K is a no brainer. People have been waiting well over a decade for this movie to be released on Blu-ray, and now it's finally here even better in 4K on physical media. Was a review really necessary for this movie, considering the long duration of time that we've waited for it? The Abyss, Aliens and True Lies are going to sell like hotcakes, regardless of their A/V quality.

I already own it on digital. It’s not my favorite of Cameron’s, but I like the love story and the sci-fi aspect. So I’ll pick it up on physical.
I already pre-ordered this and True Lies. I know that the digital versions aren't perfect, but the bottom line is that it's great to see The Abyss and True Lies finally getting the Blu-ray release, especially 4K Ultra HD. I'm not sure why they were delayed since Blu-ray's was introduced in 2006, but finally, they are being released.
I'll probably buy this, but it's too bad I don't have a DolbyVision-capable TV (or AVR)...HDR10 only, but I'm not going to replace it until it breaks or I find space for a bigger one.

Dang. I hate it when they stack discs in the case. My OCD forces me to replace it with a 3 tray disc. Did they use the same “disc stack” case for Aliens?

Considering this is the first time this has ever been on Blu-ray, I'll take anything I can get. I heard the aliens disc is awful. Actually they said James Cameron wasn't involved in this and he let some team do all three of these releases and they're not very good. I'm waiting for more reviews before I buy aliens, but I think I might have to buy the abyss regardless.

This was filmed with the time called Super 35 an open matte type of real camera capture that they mask and matte and crop in the print for the theater. I wonder if they want back to actual open matte Super 35 camera footage for the physical media new scan.

I think Cameron was able to get a Dolby vision encode on the disc because Sony is now handling Disney’s 4K disc business. Sony uses it prevalently, while Disney was staunchly opposed to it for discs but use it for streaming.
