So nice to see two of my favourite UA-camrs together in my country! I love that Mark eats anything and everything, so he can try dishes that would not be a tourist first choice and enjoy them as they should be. They are all very traditional dishes which are not so well know outside our borders. I loved how Amadeo came and behaved like a grandpa feeding his grandchildren and teaching them about the enjoyable things in life. Adorable. These restaurants are very traditional ones, completely out of the foreign tourists beaten track, but not out of the national tourist one. I am glad that people abroad can get to know this side of Spanish cuisine too. There is a world beyond paella!
I lived in Madrid for 3 years, we agree with my wife that those have been the best years of our lives in every way, both professionally and in terms of quality of life. When I see Mark enjoying these delicacies, it's hard not to remember those wonderful years. I still have the hidden desire to return to live in Madrid and visit those bars and enjoy its people and its food. Greetings from Chile.
@@spritelybird madrid is not as desirable as this video says, lots of people, expensive, dirty, just like most of the big cities more than 3M people live in madrid. Personally id preffer the north or the south but not madrid or barcelona when sevilla, bilbao, santiago or oviedo exists

Hola Victoria ,It is important to know that the Philippines was never a Spanish colony, the Philippines was a part of Spain and the Filipinos were Spanish citizens from day one, with the same rights as any other Spaniard. No Filipino had fewer rights than any Spaniard. Surely when you visit the Plaza de Callao in the center of Madrid, you will feel like in Manila.

I love it when you travel to non Asian countries. My in-laws are Chinese and I have a lot of friends from Indonesia and Thailand so I'm luck that I can enjoy authentic Asian food regularly. Spanish food is still very new to me so it was delightful to see all the different foods you tried there.

@@sinabagherisarvestani8924 I once thought snails were disgusting to eat but after I tried them sauteed in butter and garlic (called escargot) it wasn't all that bad. However, being so rich, I wouldn't eat them too regularly but I wouldn't call another culture's food disgusting because "one person's trash is another one's treasure" so let us demonstrate some respect.
I loved how none of the restaurant's oweners nor employees speaks english, they don't work for the tourist, they only care to preserve their culture, but openly welcoming any foreing people to enjoy.
The problem is if you learn a little bit of Spanish just for one holiday and go into a restaurant or bar the staff will think you speak Spanish and reply at full speed and you have no idea what they are saying. There is alway Google Translate I suppose😄 If a tourist want to go into a bar etc with little or no Spanish what do the locals think the best way to approach it is. It is a shame to be worried about tasting local food and drink because of trepidation
Hope this gets some traction for James Blick and his channel. He deserves it. He gives some great info about Spain that really came in handy on our trip to Madrid.

Wow, I remember Amadeo from Restaurante Casa Amadeo Los Caracoles when my parents took me often in the 1970s. My Dad used to have nice chats with him late into the night. I am so pleased to see he is still having fun at his Restaurante. The snails are amazing, it has been decades since we lived there. I miss the social part of eating Tapas. Spain was very inexpensive back in the day but the food looks just as authentic, simple made great.

Had the good fortune to meet and interact with Amadeo at the restaurant yesterday. What an amazing personality!!! An inspiration, to say the least. How the heck does he keep up his energy after all these years?!? To be honest, experiencing his hospitality and humor is at the top of my most memorable travel experiences. Yes, and not just there, but in all China and anywhere that features Chinese origin food. You Tiao meaning literally oily sticks. I remember when back in 2007 I ran into them when I was in Nanjing, first time ever in China, and I was like "hold on, churros!?".

Ugh.. the shrimp, the anchovies... the snails w/ chorizo! I'm so envious, yet so humbled by the rich love of culinary traditional that's on display. These last couple Spain episodes were excellent, and to now get a whole hour in Madrid with Mark feels like a true gift.

I worked in the industry for years, often in open kitchens where the diners could see what was going on. I never understood kitchens that had a “don’t eat anything because they can see you” policy. I don’t trust a cook who will feed me something he won’t eat himself. To see that old man consume his own food with so much gusto tells you it MUST be good.

I love it when you travel to non Asian countries. My in-laws are Chinese and I have a lot of friends from Indonesia and Thailand so I'm luck that I can enjoy authentic Asian food regularly. Spanish food is still very new to me so it was delightful to see all the different foods you tried there.

@@sinabagherisarvestani8924 I once thought snails were disgusting to eat but after I tried them sauteed in butter and garlic (called escargot) it wasn't all that bad. However, being so rich, I wouldn't eat them too regularly but I wouldn't call another culture's food disgusting because "one person's trash is another one's treasure" so let us demonstrate some respect.
I loved how none of the restaurant's oweners nor employees speaks english, they don't work for the tourist, they only care to preserve their culture, but openly welcoming any foreing people to enjoy.
Spanish is the second language in the world after Chinese, therefore is more important than english so doesn't hurt if the tourist learn it.

The problem is if you learn a little bit of Spanish just for one holiday and go into a restaurant or bar the staff will think you speak Spanish and reply at full speed and you have no idea what they are saying.

If a tourist want to go into a bar etc with little or no Spanish what do the locals think the best way to approach it is.
It is a shame to be worried about tasting local food and drink because of trepidation

Wow, I remember Amadeo from Restaurante Casa Amadeo Los Caracoles when my parents took me often in the 1970s. My Dad used to have nice chats with him late into the night. I am so pleased to see he is still having fun at his Restaurante. The snails are amazing, it has been decades since we lived there. I miss the social part of eating Tapas. Spain was very inexpensive back in the day but the food looks just as authentic, simple made great.

Had the good fortune to meet and interact with Amadeo at the restaurant yesterday. What an amazing personality!!! An inspiration, to say the least. How the heck does he keep up his energy after all these years?!? To be honest, experiencing his hospitality and humor is at the top of my most memorable travel experiences. If you go, definitely try and sit inside where all the action is.

Yes, and not just there, but in all China and anywhere that features Chinese origin food. You Tiao meaning literally oily sticks. I remember when back in 2007 I ran into them when I was in Nanjing, first time ever in China, and I was like "hold on, churros!?".

Ugh.. the shrimp, the anchovies... the snails w/ chorizo! I'm so envious, yet so humbled by the rich love of culinary traditional that's on display. These last couple Spain episodes were excellent, and to now get a whole hour in Madrid with Mark feels like a true gift.

I worked in the industry for years, often in open kitchens where the diners could see what was going on. I never understood kitchens that had a “don’t eat anything because they can see you” policy. I don’t trust a cook who will feed me something he won’t eat himself. To see that old man consume his own food with so much gusto tells you it MUST be good.
