SAN SEBASTIAN, SPAIN - Welcome to San Sebastian, one of the greatest food cities in the world! Today we’re going on an ultimate pincho / pinxto tour, we’ll be eating seafood, jamon, light bites, and a Spanish tortilla. Stay tuned for some of the best Basque food on earth!

Again, San Sebastian is a capital of delicious food and they take it seriously. As soon as you start eating, you’ll notice the quality, care, and pride that people take in their Basque food. It’s ingredient driven, and you’ll get some of the world’s best quality.
Antonio Bar (g.page/antonio...) - First stop today is Antonio Bar, champion of the Spanish tortilla - a mix of potatoes, onions, and eggs, caramelized until maximum flavor potential is reached. I tried many tortillas in Spain, this was the king.
Gorriti Taberna (goo.gl/maps/Ff...) - Next we headed to Gorriti Taberna near the market for some small breakfast bites, all of which were delicious.
El Tamboril (goo.gl/maps/EB...) - After walking around the market we then headed to eat some pinchos for lunch - we tried their potato salad, fried chili peppers, and their deep fried meat filled red chili.
La Cuchara de San Telmo (goo.gl/maps/Ns...) - Next we had some meats, especially their delicious roast suckling pig.
Bodega Donostiarra Gros (g.page/BodegaD...) - Gabriella took us for one last lunch stop for a simple tuna sandwich with vinegar.
Ganbara (goo.gl/maps/bh...) - In San Sebastian, Ganbara is regarded as one of the best restaurants serving pintxos, and we were lucky to get a chance to eat their. They take food to the next level, everything dedicated to simplicity and best quality. I loved their velvet prawns and their mushroom dishes.
Borda Berri (goo.gl/maps/os...) - Next meal we headed to Borda Berri, another famous food bar.
La Viña (goo.gl/maps/QS...) - Finally to end this ultimate San Sebastian Spanish food tour we went to La Viña for a slice of the original legendary Basque cheesecake!
What a day in San Sebastian, and truly an ultimate food lovers destination.

What I Love about Italy & Spain is the simplicity of preparing their food, allowing the natural taste of the food to shine through. In America we overcook, over prepare our food! The freshness of this food makes you feel like you never had true prepared food. Mark, this is what sharing food is really about! In your own words "Wow!!! Can't help but to appreciate you & your show!

Spain is waaaay better. They love and live on rat meat in Italy 😂
As a Spaniard looking through the comments, I can only say THANK YOU MARK, a lot of new tourist will discover Spain thanks to you!
I'm discovering my own country thanks to Mark 🤣
Spain is at my top list, it has my kind of food and it's right next door.
Underrated food, doesn't lose anything to the Italian or French.
This Spain series is a cut above the rest. Excellent stuff
As a spaniard, i can confirm: our food is one of the things we are proud of. We live in a country so diverse that is impossible to discover in one life! Come to visit us!
I have eaten so many tortillas throughout my life...My mother made the best tortilla...I stayed watching her every time she made them...So I learned how to make them...I make a pretty good one...Every single person that tried it loved it...Not even one person said they did not like it...It is one of the most simple dishes, yet also one of the tastiest...Thank you once more Mark for bringing home so many memories...This dish for me represents many moments shared with my mother...
The best tortilla in Spain is cooked in San Sebastian.

Omg my mouth watered with that tortilla. I married a Spaniard ❤️ and he makes the Tortilla de Patata like this. Love Spain food 😋 🇪🇸
I hate to admit that my knowledge of Spain, its diverse regions, and its amazing cuisine was seriously limited. Mark has opened my eyes to a whole new world through his gastronomic tour of the country! It is now a bucket list destination for me!
Thank you Kurt. Mine too, before this trip I had only been to Barcelona, this trip to Spain was truly different and eye opening.
Well, Spain is distributed in 17 region, 2 cities at north Africa and subdive in 50 province. Which challenge do you want choose? The challenge of taste one recipe for region or the challenge of taste one recipe for each of the 50 provinces?
Stuff me in your luggage.....
What a dream come true. Be determined & focused.👍.
the thing with spain, is that every region has its own culture, and food. So its difficult to have accurate knowledge of it. Basque country, Andalucia, Catalunya, Canary Islands, Galicia, Castilla la Mancha, etc they are all so different. Different food, languages or dialects, culture, architecture....
Desde España, nuestra comida es Sensacional igual que nuestra Historia incluido el Generalísimo Franco. que nos salvó durante casi 40 años de comunistas, anarquistas, masones, separatistas pirados con su fiel Oliveira en Portugal.

The genius of Mark’s videos is his ability to take deep dives into countries and truly convey his experience. After seeing James Blick here I got hooked on his Vlog just like I how I found Joel’s and JLJ’s vlog. Don’t change anything Mark. Don’t go cable, network or public television…just keep doing what you do!
Huge thank you!
I am born and raised in San Sebastián and i appreciate the fact that Gabriella toured out of the old town. There are such good places unknown for tourists. She's really a donostiarra.

Mark, you are the reason I will be putting Spain as a place to visit and eat at after this amazing food tour you have done this far. Every place you have showed us on your tour looks just absolutely amazing and stunning. The ambiance and the energy of these chefs is just outstanding. Also the quality of the ingredients and the recipes they have shared with you is just mouth watering. Spain is now on my bucket list thank you for showing your experience there. Gabriella has been another perfect foil on your Spanish tour - these outstanding people you've worked with across Spain have taken everything to a genuinely jaw-dropping level. I love the format - working with people who are as passionate about food as you - and they simply take you to their favourite food spots - genius. I'm totally loving Merrihue being with you now...I'll feel rather sad the next time he's not by your side in a video! Loving your work, Mark.

I was born and raised in one of the largest Basque populations in California. Basque dinners and festivals were a staple, treat, and experience. San Sebastián is my next European destination. This just makes me so excited to go.
Where in CA?
Add to the tour its neighbour Bilbao, the all-time rival of Donosti (the Basque name for San Sebastián). Both cities have been competing for ages for the Pintxos' throne.
Bilbao is not right at the sea, but you can reach a lot of beaches by Metro. Also the product is fresher than fresh, top quality meat, fish and garden and a bunch of renown restaurants. After that take a walk by the riverside from the Old Town watching historic and modern buildings from 7 Pritzker winners (the Nobel Prize for Architecture), soon you'll find the Guggenheim Museum. You won't regret this visit.

Pintxos and tapas, how easy is for a Spanish person to understand it and yet how difficult to word them to the visitors.
The way I explained it in the past was like this:
-Pintxos: one or two bites food portion, meant to be for 1 person and you have to pay for them.
-Tapas: is not a specific food but a way to eat it.
You can order almost anything from a menu, as long as it's portioned and set on the middle of the table to share, it'll be a tapa.
Let's differentiate the "free tapa" that many Spanish bars and restaurants offer alongside your drink order (wich you can't generally choose, they'll bring whatever they have that day on the house) from "ir de tapas", which is the thing we actually do: pick a few dishes from a menu and share them all, in a very informal context and can be done standing at the bar or sitting on a table.
Some places are specialised
in this type of eating, so the food they offer is easy to split by the number of guests at the table. Some common tapas are croquetas, tortilla, calamari, charcuterie boards, etc, because is simple to grab from each plate without messing the table.
It's also very common for a group of people to order a few tapas to share as starters and then order the main course individually (in a sitting restaurant).
My last lunch at a restaurant: table of 5.
The restaurant served us some olives and Galician empanada (free tapa that we call "algo de picar=something to snack on) with the drinks, we ordered some croquetas (we asked how many are they in a portion, and decided how many we needed for everyone to have at least 2 pieces, for example), padron peppers, octopus and a house salad to share as a starter, and then we ordered whatever each of us wanted as a main course. Hope it helps as an example.
Another meaning of the word Tapa applies to the size of the portion, as opposed to Ración when written on a menu or chalkboard.
Ración is a full size plate of food, a tapa will be a smaller portion of said food. Some places will call the small portion Tapa, some will say "1/2 ración".
A ración of croquetas could be 7 pieces, and a tapa 4. A pintxo would be 1 croqueta, usually bigger in size.
Sometimes we go for a beer before lunch and order couple of tapas to snack on while drinking and then go home to eat.
Another day we go out for dinner and hit couple of taperias for a fun and light supper, or just stay in one place the whole evening for a proper table dinner experience.
Tapas is not this one thing we all do the same way in Spain.
Some regions are amazing for tapas, others are huge on stews and slow cooking.
It's very hard to encapsulate the Spanish gastronomy because it's very local and region based.
Whoever visits Spain from North to South, East to West, and the Islands, will agree that we have many cultures and landscapes in a small sized country.
6
I'd say tapas are common and good in the whole of spain. It is bar and social culture, no matter where you go.
Personally me, I love all the videos you do from others I seen from other people you put that charismatic attitude and that joy to the food. Nice.
San Sebastian is gorgeous with awesome food. Once you experience the taste of fresh food from farm or sea to table you will always appreciate the flavor. Basque cheesecake is THE best..imo Another great one Mark..thank you👍👍

@@joaorobalo9353 not anymore, weather has changed…
I stumbled into this town during an international jazz festival in 1992. Oh my goodness it's a wonderful place. Tapas and jazz in July.

Goodness, that all looked so delicious! You have the best job, Mark!
I have always wanted to retire in Europe and Spain has been at the top of my list. Thank you for the beautiful tour.
Fantastic! Book my flight! Thanks, Mark, Jeffrey, Kevin, and Daniella!😋
Truly amazing video. Production on point and great footage. I definitely will be wanting to visit Spain thanks to you. This is what life is all about. These experiences, through food and cultures. You are the man Mark. Thank you.
Thank you so much Greg!
Nice to see you. Thanks for your best food discovery. Waiting for your next video in Baku, Azerbaijan 🇦🇿 🙂😀
I don't see why Netflix isn't knocking on Marks door.
He's officially ready to have his own Foodie Adventures Show on the big channel.
I honestly think he’d turn it down. They’d try and restrict him
Awesome videos in Spain, really amazing food to taste, oh I love it! Thank you Mark we love you!
I'm so glad to see reviews on food from Spain. I never knew anything about Spanish food 'besides for western world Spanish food like Mexico to Brazil. I never was even interested i looking at Spain as a food destination and now its definitely on my food bucket list . So glad I've saved all the videos so if I ever go I can look book and plan a trip . Thanks Mark and Jeff. And a big thanks to all of your guides on this trip. Im sure alot of these places would never be found easily.
Friend Adam, if you have never been interested in Spanish food, it is because you are a bit lost when it comes to gastronomy, since Spain is one of the first countries with Michelin stars and its restaurants are among the best in the world every year, not to mention the chefs of the best rated in the world. I don't know what kind of cooking you like, but if you want to get to know Spanish you have to come to Spain, not get to know it through Spanish restaurants around the world. Each area of Spain has its own cuisine that will leave you amazed. All the best. Sorry because it is not written, it is done with a translator.
San Sebastian is number 1 in the whole world for best quality food
That wouldn't really be Spanish food though. That's Latin American food.
@@KanBig I think you are not aware of Spanish food, I don't know what country you are from but you have little or no idea of Spanish cuisine.
@@Fernando-uv1ky No le has entendido.
My turn to say Oh Wow. That food looked so delicious! Couple of times I almost opened my mouth for a bite of food. I would say the creamy cheese cake is a must to try. Thanks for sharing your tasty food adventure!
Smiled at your comment...I felt the same way....
Simplicity & love in every bite!
Amazing Mark, we are learning so much from what you are doing with the diversity of ways to deliver everything!
amazing how so many great recipes start with onions !
I rarely watch an episode twice. but I have watched several of these spanish ones twice
if i ever get to San Sébastien I'll make sure I get Gabriella to show us around. She really knows her stuff
Im so damned jealous! Hope there are a couple of more episodes from España!!!
Yes, this is a fantastic video. Gabriella is a walking internet of knowledge about food and the places where the best foods can be obtained.
What that region of Spain looks amazing!
