LEON, SPAIN - Totally off the beaten path in the countryside of Spain is where you’ll fine
Bodega El Capricho, one of the greatest single steak restaurants on earth. Jose Gordon's family raises their own oxen, much longer than typical commercial beef, and ages the meat to perfection. Sitting in an ancient cave wine cellars you will taste the best steak in the world!
Friends in the video:
Jeffrey Merrihue ( / xtremefoodies_ Thank you to Jeffrey for setting up this once in a lifetime experience)
Kevin Chan ( / finediningexp )
We arrived in León about mid morning ready to spend an entire day at Bodega El Capricho, learning about the world’s best beef. Jose Gordon first brought us around the farm, taking us to a variety of places where he raises a number of different breeds of oxen. They were no doubt the biggest cattle I’ve ever seen, giant and healthy, so beautiful - so gentle and yet so powerful. One ox he showed us was over 1600 kilos, literally the size of a rhinoceros.
Next it was the tour of the processing facility where the meat is packaged and shipped. Seeing the best quality beef in the world all in one facility was amazing. What was also a highlight was tasting cecina, Jose’s signature beef which is salted and preserved in a cave for 4 years. The flavor was so intense and so delicious I almost couldn’t believe it.
Finally we headed back to the restaurant for the full beef meal which was the full tasting menu. We started off slow and steady and progressed our way to the main event, the giant t-bone ox steak, aged for 180 days and grilled to absolute perfection. The meat was unlike any other steak I’ve ever had, the most intense beefy cheesy flavor I’ve ever had. Truly as Keven mentioned, every other steak will be flavorless after this one. Eating steak in a cave is one of the most memorable food experiences and Spanish food experiences I’ve ever had.
What I loved about Jose Gordon is that throughout the process he truly treats his cows and oxen with respect. There’s no doubt you will find some of the best meat on earth at Bodega El Capricho.

I thought we knew steak in Texas.. I thought the New Yorkers made it exquisite.. I thought the Japanese with their Kobe was the state of the art... But Jose, sir, what you have created here is the Holy of Holies. May your family and tradition live forever. If I ever go to Europe I would be honored to dine here.
Same here, if I ever get the chance to go to Spain I’m definitely going to visit this place and hopefully get opportunity to eat one these Truly Amazing Steaks… My mouth would not stop watering watching this, especially when he was cutting the fat off the steak, thats one of my favorite parts of a steak… 🥩😋🤤
I’m mainly plant based but after reading your review I think I need to hop over to Spain n get me some steak!!
Seriously, the whole place is clean he raises his oxen like pets and it's in such a beautiful location. Definitely want to go here.
Spain's grill and meat culture is not something to underestimate
We do know steak in texas my friend but this is solid stuff..
This Restaurant put Salt Bae to the cleaners, start of from the owner itself, a nice humble guy who know he is good and doesnt need to do all contortionism to satisfy the clients, from zero to 10 this restaurant definetely is a tenner and perhaps one of the best steak house I ever see, I'd rather spend the money flying to Spain to this restaurant than spend $1000 plus for a steak at Salt Bae, thanks for sharing, amazing !!! 😋😋👌🏻
Salt who?
Salt got nth on this man, this is the God Father of 🥩
If i can afford I would go to this restaurant, salt Bea, Kobe Japan and every famous steak houses around the world LOL.
I always wondered why Spanish gastronomy was not as known as others, while after travelling most of my life, I think it's one of the bests in the world. I'm so glad to see people can see about it through your channel. Good job, Mark. Thank you!
It has a simple reason mate, because the elaboration is probably the most important point in the mayority of the gastronomies, but here the quality of the product is the key, and this quality products can only be found in Spain
@@omroru3089 The thing is here you find good products + best elaboration. That's my point. In Basque Country e.g. you have literally one of the best gastronomies in terms of elaborations.
@@omroru3089 It's just a matter of marketing. E.g. Italian food bc of italians-americans, has reached the whole US with cheap and easy-to-do products (pizza and pasta) + promoted Italy image as the main mediterranean cuisine through movies etc. during decades. Spain didn't have such a marketing and international presence. It's now that people starts to now about it bc of top chef awards and tourism. It's just 'country brand' is so unfair. E.g. Most of olive oil in the world is spanish, main and top producer. However italian brands have the power in the market, so they absorb spanish companies, and sell spanish oil as italian. Let alone the wine...

Thank you Mark for showing us this. Not many would even think that beef can be aged and then eaten raw like wafers. Amazing work and dedication by Jose and his team👏👏
Am African, and did a road trip from Switzerland to spain, spain has the most delicious food in Europe, in my opinion. Never liked raw preserved meat until I went to spain, delicious! Their ham is so good, me and my husband bought a bunch to take home.

I've watched a lot of these "worlds best food" videos from various channels, and I always thought people were over reacting for the camera, when every bite is just "soooo good". But then I had the opportunity to eat some Wagyu A5 ribeye. I had 2 good bites. (for roughly 50 bucks, but still) It's not an act. Food like this can literally stop you in your tracks. You are a lucky man
diarrhea can do the same thing.
I think Jose's philosophy about the care of the livestock is very important. He really loves them and we love the steaks!
The love this man has for his animals and profession... I have never seen anything like it... I am sure there isn't another place like this on the planet !!!

this switch to ultra-fine-dining turned out to be of his best videos in recent years. I had no idea beef artistry could be taken THAT far, and the earthy cavern setting was the final extra touch that made it memorable. I hope Mark continues with humble everyday restaurants, but this Michelin restaurant was an exception in that it was actually very worth documenting.
What an absolutely incredible and wholesome journey 🧡 Mark you are a beacon of positivity and your videos help to inspire deep respect for the planet we live on and all the amazing cultures and food we are so blessed to have. As a Portuguese person, I absolutely looove this Spain series and all the amazing food and restaurants you work so hard to showcase to us, I feel that the love and respect these incredible chefs have for food is incredibly inspiring and reflects very much our tradition of it as well. Have watched so many of your videos but this one may be my personal fav. Loved watching the love and respect given to the animals before they're butchered. Having raised our own family hens, I know how big of a difference it makes in the taste when an animal is actually treated well and respected before being consumed. The taste of factory farm meats has nothing on family/locally raised meats. Beautiful video!
This was one of my favorites too! I liked the insight on the whole process. Everyone at El Capricho are doing things right! Greetings from TeXas.
Absolutely. The animals deserve to be treated well, we just shouldn't torture them just bcz we gonna butcher them when they grow up.
I was thinking the same exact thing. Also the fact the cows/oxen live along life before butchering. Not to mention Kobe style is over rated.
This video made me so envious of his ability to travel to these beautiful places and be able to eat such food gold!!! Lol
Now!! This is one of the most privileged moments in anyones life , without any doubt , to bev able to get a glimpse of the process , of where exactly your meal is coming from the treatment and how it gets delivered to your table , it's priceless , GOD BLESS THE CAPRICHO RANCH FAMILY!!! The only region in Spain I’m not familiar about is Asturias and País Vasco which I plan to visit soon. I even remember in Alicante there was barely any Spanish restaurant. Most were fast food or Italian which is not a good sign of good gastronomy. In Portugal most restaurants are Portuguese.

I never new beef have this kind of science to it. The entire experience is amazing Ozie's passion is quite impressive. He is at the right business. That is why that they say ''When you do something you are so passionate about you will be fruitful." . Just exceptional!
Superlative video, Mark. Our take-a-way is stratospheric thanks to your editing and sharing. Best to you brother.
WOW! I’ve never seen such a beautiful mouth watering steak in all my life!! My mouth started watering when he was cutting the fat cut off the steak, Omg that looked so delicious!! The Ox he raises on his farm looked so happy and care free, not a care in the world! There probably fed and treated better than most people are Lol…🥩😋🤤
One of the best food videos I’ve seen from this channel 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Thank you 🙏🏼 Mark for sharing with us this was an amazing experience.
His love and respect he has for the bulls is amazing they were all so relaxed and looked so healthy that meat looks so good.
Going well 😀
then they get their throats slit
It is very hard to understand how can you “love” animals that you intend to kill.
@@chihhou It's like putting down a lame race horse. You can love it but ending it's life is what's best for the animal.
Love all your videos Mark the way you present them is first class.I love all cultures and the food is amazing 👏 One word mark wow.
so proud of having this place in león! it is truly amazing. come visit!!!
I love Spaniard beef. I’m not saying it’s the best steak in the world, I’m just saying when I lived there, I learn minimal pepper and salt is the only seasoning you need and the portion to the cost is fantastic. And If given the choice of what kind of steak I want for my last meal, I would choose Spanish beef. And WOW, Iberia Jamón is the best and I would love to sample that beef Jamón. Im sure it will also be the best too.
Iberico pork secrito 🙌🏼🤤 spain has nice beef but there pork is the best on the planet
My stars above. I have not eaten beef in over 15 years. But to have this experience and enjoy such freshness, I would quickly revert. LOL. Wow. Thank you Mark, Jeremy and Kevin. Jose, Continue to be great and grant others this once in a lifetime experience. This is definitely in the top 5 videos from you Mark. Probably number 1. I am blown away. Mouth is watering. I wish Ying could have experienced this one with you. MAD LOVE!❤
It is an amazing video of an amazing experience...Thank You!
Greetings from Leon!!! you are all welcome to visit our amazing province & city!!
Wow you make that beef look so good I can taste it incredible you get to travel all over the world and eat the best food love watching your videos.
The way Jose interacts with his animals reminds me of something responsible farmers say: "I want my animals to be happy all their lives and have just one really bad day."
Mark, you have just made me add El Caprichio to my bucket list!! Great vlog!!
So great I had to watch again probably my favorite video!
